Somewhere west of New-Amsterdam When the plane took of in New-Amsterdam the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Seven United Provinces was still going over some notes with his secretary. He knew this meeting would be important and it made him a bit anxious that the Stadhouder could not be there in time. What made it even worse was the news about the assasination of the Grand Duke which made the presence of the Stadhouder even less likely. Things would be a lot easier if the Stadhouder would be there... The Minister decided to take a nap, however sleep wouldn't come and he just lay there until the plane began its descend to the airport of Vilnius, Lithuania. He got up, smiled into the mirror, and hoped the meeting with the Lithuanian Government would be a succes. --- At the Dutch Embassy in Allentown, Republic of Byronmandy It was her first big job since she became ambassador for the Seven. Juliana Christina Donkervoort (Julia) started as the personal secretary of the General in Command of the Royal Dutch Army, and after a great meeting in the Grand Duchy of Veomo she was offered to become the next Ambassador for the Provinces in Byronmandy. "The most important Embassy, for the least experienced person" she thought correctly. Today would be her first big assignment. Luckily the job would be about military matters, a subject she was familiar with considering her former job. She was to meet with some people of the High Command of the Byronmandy Army, Navy and Airforce. Her direct order 'Speak with the Byronmandy High Command and get us out of the stone age.' Initially she would attend to the meeting with her former boss and General in Command of the Dutch Army, Jan Pieterszoon Coen. But he was to take care of the matters concerning the assasination of the Grand Duke back in the Ptovinces. So it was up to her now, and she did not like it. |

Alexandria, Monaco-Ville-Nice: Defense Minister Ptah was hard at work in his massive office space in the Imperial High Command Headquarters. Situation reports, intelligence briefs, troops movements, troop strengths sheets and all other forms of paper work were in folders and stacked on his desk for the Defense Minister to go over. Aides and high ranking officers were constantly in and our of his office asking various questions or airing concerns to the Defense Minister. His phone seemed to ring off the hook and with each ring seemed to make Defense Minister Ptah more annoyed. All of this gave the Defense Minister the appearance of a man who had not slept in a long time and man burning with a short fuse. It had been a long few weeks, though his work was starting to bare fruit in many forms. With the Queen having returned early from North Chicanan she immediately requested a meeting with the Defense Minister. This meant good things the Defense Minister thought, the Queen could first hand see the progress being made in Zion. He did however not forget the fact that with the Queen back this meant more royal interference in the military's day to day operations, meaning more headaches. A young officer walked in carrying another folder and the Defense Minister rolled his eyes and shouted "Better be important!". The young and increasingly nervous officer answered in a stuttered and nervous tone " It is sir.... Information about the SUP seeking Byronmandy's help in modernizing their armies....". The Defense Minister laughed, this prompted the young officer to laugh and this quickly threw the Defense Minister into a rage "You come here while I am dealing with this mountain of paperwork and at any moment the Queen shall come through these doors to tell me this!" the Defense Minister barked. The officer seemed to try to disappear in plain site and said "Apologies sir.". The Defense Minister put his head in his hands softly saying "Didn't know their was a whole lot left of the Byronmander's army to ask assistance from.". He then lifted his head looked at the young officer and felt a bit of pity on the young soldier and then said "Son, I'll be in my grave long before we have to worry about the SUP. Hell I doubt the Grangales even have them on the map militarily and they practically neighbor each other. Give the file to one of my secretaries and they will see our SUP analysts get it. The officer saluted and took what was left of his pride out the door as quickly as he could. The Defense Minister then set back to work..... "Gonna be a long day." he thought. |

--- Imperial Council Chambers, Directia --- Clifford and several others read though the report that the SUP was seeking to update it's military capabilities. "Personally, I'm not all that worried nor surprised. They had the whole Ukraine issue not too long ago, and with a possible civil war in Veomo, I can't say I blame them. Aside from Anatolia the region just seems to be blowing up right at their doorsteps, then there was the whole matter of a black market trading post right in their backyard." Clifford said as he casually tossed the report onto the table in front of him. "They're seeking Byronmandy's assistance, you don't think there's anything to that?" Raines asked. "We spend way more than they do on defense and we have something in the order of 6 times the number of fleets and divisions. If anything if they upgrade their navy it'll take some slack off the 3rd Fleet in keeping an eye on Nova Zembla." Arlington answered. "That and MVN's army just got done stomping a trail up and down Byronmandy's ass, so we know full well they're hardly getting help from an invincible force." Lauderdale quipped. "No, there's no need to make an arms race out of this." Buckingham said. "Alright then, so what's the next order of business we need to attend to then...? Councilor Scarlett asked. |

Secretary of Defense Jack Harrison has anounced that since the President and chief of intelligence are currently preoccupied in North Chicanan, he would like to conduct the meeting himself with the SUP Ambassador on a possible arms deal and modernization of the UP military. |

Julia approached the Byronmander Ministry of Defense, she was a bit anxious because her first job would be one of a major scale. She entered the lobby where a secretary was already waiting for her. The lady asked Julia to follow her to the Secretary of Defense his office. The building was immense and it took them a while to reach the office. Finally they arrived and Julia entered the office, she approached the Secretary of Defense and shook his hand. She said 'I am Juliana Christina Donkervoort, my sincere apologies for the absence of the Commanding General of the Dutch Army. These are troubled times for all of us.' |

"No problem. I am much honored to have the SUP ambassador here in my office. Esspecially when they are a lady as beautiful as yourself." he said, attempting to complement the ambassador, but unsure if he went too far. "Our two nations are wonderful allies and the Republic is prepared to keep it that way. Since the Provinces are now a member of the LTO however, we will be entrusted with defending each other in times of war. Therefore we are more than willing to aide in the development and modernization of your military." |

"Tough day, tough job, and he sees just the package." Julia thought a bit amused, things like this happened more often but she never got used to it. She did not mind it though and said 'Well thank you, I am just a healthy but slightly tired Dutch girl. I am not used to meetings like this so forgive me if I behave like an amateur, but the truth is that I am one.' she smiled. Julia said 'Ok let's get to work shall we? I have a pretty difficult assignment from the highest ranks of the Dutch Government and Ministry of Defense, essentially it says "Get us out of the stone age". We are searching for the technology and engineering capabilities to modernize the military, and our hope was that you can help us with that.' She grabbed her bag and retrieved a few folders. She handed them over to the Secretary and said 'Please look at this, it shows you what we have at this moment. Most of it is extremely outdated.' Folders 'We need your help especially for modernization of our Army and creation of an Airforce. Given our naval experience the Navy is planning to modernize the fleet mostly on her own. As we speak a new shipyard is built in Rotterdam for that purpose.' |

“Excellent. As you might know, the war between Byronmandy and MVN and Grangale has just ended. I’ve been working non-stop trying to prepare for a hypothetical Imperial invasion, and thank god it looks as though I won’t have to worry about that any more. The Byronmadian military, especially the navy, is about to be dramatically reformed to fit new challenges of the modern age. I’ve been working with the people over at the BIA to try and get it all figured out, and it seems like we’re gaining some headway. Although, as we speak, the Byronmadian military is down to 22 divisions, and we’re working furiously to get back to our full military capability. One thing I guess we can be happy about with the recent war is that our home front is in very good condition, and our manufacturing capabilities have never been better. However awful war is, it sure is good for an economy.” said Harrison, as he looked through the files given to him by the ambassador. “Yes….Well I am very familiar with your military, and it sure is in the stone age. Now that you are a member of the LTO, our militaries must be constantly ready to adapt with the times and situations. The military of the Provinces is a bit small in numbers now,” he said, “but I’ve heard numerous rumors about your expansion plans. However, as we work together to modernize, we must consider your unique situation. Your nation is far out of the way geographically. Yes, you do border both San Lumen and Veomo to your south, but I doubt they would ever wish to invade you. However there is always the possibility of them letting Imperial troops into their territories as a launching point for an attack on the provinces. Nonetheless, I think that there isn’t much of a need for the SUP to build a large land army. Only enough to be able to garrison your southern border and perhaps to be able to lease a base in Iberia someday. But for now, I believe that most of your reforms and expansions should be focused on your navy and air force. An air base deep inside your wide-open plains should be quite a pain in the back for any planned Imperial or Grangale attack. Due to your unique location, your ability to sail ships or fly aircraft into the real zones of intensity like the Mediterranean will be a necessity in any future events. Byronmandy believes that your Navy and Air Force should be by far your largest branches. Your Army should be of adequate size yes, but should be made small and lethal. Able to adapt and made of small numbers of special forces and others having access to modern technology and firepower that Byronmandy can provide. A large conscript-based army and large amounts of Armored battalions would be wasteful. Byronmandy is currently replacing our primary fighter aircraft in our Air Force. We are planning to completely replace all of our F-16s with more modern and stealthy F-35s, and we are currently accepting bids for a replacement for our F-15s. Naturally, we are unsure of what to do with all these planes we are replacing. Perhaps we can ship most of those to you on…lets say…discount rates?” The Secretary of War leaned back in his chair. “I am interested to hear what you would think of all this.” |

Julia listened to the secretary and was happy to hear their ideas were much alike. She said 'I agree with you about the size of our military, 4 divisions are simply not enough. I do know that there are plans but I do not know them in detail. Somehow my boss does not want to give much information on that subject. The minutes show you that our economy has grown enormously over the last months, our trade surplus has never been so big and military expenditures have risen accordingly. I am pretty sure that the number of divisions will increase, but I have no idea how much nor when this will happen.' 'The government is convinced to mordernize the navy mostly on her own powers. We have many shipwharfs capable of building high tech ships and dredging companies know everything about deep sea pressure hulls. The Provinces has a great naval history and the government plans to add another chapter in the books. The construction of a military wharf in Rotterdam started a long time ago and after many years of dormancy the construction came in more rapid waters half a year ago. Engineers are working on the first prototype frigate which could be launched within a month. Our plan is to keep the Military of Byronmandy up to date on every naval step we make. We could request cooporation on specific programs but we will not go as far as to buy complete Byronmander vessels because of the construction of our own building capacity.' Julia said 'We need much more help with the army and especially the airforce. We do not have the capacity or the knowledge to construct modern equipment for the army, we only excel at laying bridges, digging tunnels under water, constructing waterlines, etc. It seems we can only do it if there is water involved, a historical heritage I suppose. Last but not least the airforce. We have no aviation industry whatsoever, the entire airforce has be built from the ground up. We need all the help we can get there.' Julia smiled 'Conclusion, we agree to put the focus on the navy and maybe the airforce. And we need equipment deals for the army and all the help in the world for the airforce. In return we have an excellent economy, a lot of naval experience, and a world leading position in water management. What do you think?' |

"That sounds excellent. I will inform my department of possible deals to come, and the President has told me himself that he is looking forward to helping the Provinces. He has even hinted at staging military exercises, but that doesn't seem likely for a liitle while now, or at least until our own military is built up to full strength. Very well. Is there anything more that you would like to discuss or should we call it a day?" |
