Anyone read this? My dad got this for me after he went on a business trip to England. It's got some great stuff, including an interview with Paul,a section about Paul's avant garde years,a section about the making of Band On The Run,and a collection of released and unreleased photos of Paul taken by Linda. It was in this issue: I'll try to find a transcript of the interview. If not,I might just type it up. |

There was also a section called "Press to Play" in which various celebrities voted on their favorite Paul tunes. Here's the list: 1.What You're Doing by Billie Joe Armstrong "It's a hidden gem-one of the first glimpses of how Paul was able to take rock'n'roll and be a craftsman. We stayed in the same hotel once.I was taking a piss and he walked in humming. He came in the stall next to me,leaned over and said,Do you want to write a song together? Was I tempted to peer over? No,I kept eyes forward. And we never did write that song." From:Beatles For Sale (Parlophone,1964) 2.Band On The Run by Kasabian's Tom Meighan "I really, really love-and this is monster-Band On The Run.It's a great song.My mum had the album on vinyl. There's a picture on the cover, isn't there, where they've been caught out and they're all in black suits-(with) Michael Parkinson,Kenny Lynch.I love Lennon and McCartney like a coin-heads and tails.I said hello to Paul McCartney briefly once and he said,You rock, kind of thing;that was cool.Hopefully one day I'll have a sit down with him and we can discuss what life's all about. What do I think he'll say?You tell me." From:Band On The Run (Apple,1973) 3.Helter Skelter by Richard Ashcroft "It's so heavy-heavier than anything The Who pulled off.His vocal delivery is incredible-he goes from being a nice lad with a winning smile to a demon with a guttural delivery.Play it alongside Blackbird from the same era-how can one artistic mind produce those two things?" From:The White Album (Apple,1968) 4.In My Life by Liverpool FC defender Jamie Carragher "Technically it's a Lennon song but Paul takes a lot of credit for setting John's lyrics to music. In Liverpool,Beatles songs are everywhere but it's this that reminds me of growing up in the city. It'll always be about an idyllic Liverpudlian childhood." From:Rubber Soul (Apple,1965) 5.Lovely Rita by Brian Wilson "I had a sneak preview of Sgt.Pepper when Paul came to visit me in 1967 and Lovely Rita made me laugh my head off.I love the way it comes floating in.The bassline is great and the lyrics are kind of funny too." From:Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Apple,1967) 6.Wonderful Christmastime by Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig "It's a little corny, but it's so unusual.I love those echo-y synth sounds at the start-there's something eerie about it.Maybe we'll do a cover of it some day." From:Back To The Egg (EMI,1993 reissue) 7.Live and Let Die by Chris Martin "It's a fact:Live and Let Die is the greatest McCartney song.As a fan,I love it.As a songwriter,it's something I put on if I'm ever feeling a bit big for my boots,as it reminds me I've still got a lot of work to do.It's a symphony, and it's packed with emotion too.I've met him a few times. He's lovely.I've actually seen him in swimming trunks if you want the honest truth.I can't remember why he was in trunks...but the important thing is he still looked fab." From:Live and Let Die OST (United Artists,1973) 8.The Long and Winding Road by Tory leader David Cameron "It has a wonderful melody and emotion and pretty much sums up the life of the Leader of the Opposition." 9.Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey by Ozzy Osbourne "This is him getting down to business after his first solo albums, which were simple and scratchy. It's very pictorial lyrically, which is one of his best tricks:the ability to write a story in music. He could sing the phone directory and I'd buy it." From:Ram (Parlophone,1971) 10.Let 'Em In by Mika "It's a progression of the Beatles sound:the marching band, the flute part, the horn section. It feels like a demented theme tune from a '50s sitcom. His writing is all about strong melodies and simple lyrics. He never waters anything down by making it universal;he strengthens it." From:At The Speed Of Sound (Parlophone,1976) 11.Maybe I'm Amazed by Vic Reeves "He recorded it at the same time as The Beatles made Let It Be.It's a love song to Linda, heartfelt and honest. He tended to be a bit rockier on his own or with Wings, which appeals to me.The guitar here has a rocky edge to it and in places his voice has a raw quality." From:McCartney (Apple,1970) 12.Eleanor Rigby by Jamie Cullum "One of the most profoundly odd pop songs ever written.A five-year-old or a 65-year-old can love this but it's very dark, they lyrics are odd,and the arrangement is weird. It reminds me of George Gershwin and Nick Cave." From:Revolver (Parlophone,1966) 13.Here Today by Keane's Tim Rice-Oxley "It's obviously about John Lennon, who had just died, and it sounds almost like a love song. The first line is 'If I say I really knew you well, what would your answer be?' The honesty in that couplet is almost unique in McCartney's career. From:Tug of War (Parlophone,1982) 14.She Loves You by Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw "It captivates that wonderful early Beatles optimism. You can't listen without wanting to sing or whistle along and you can't help feeling better afterwards. It could be the anthem for the swinging '60s.Classic McCartney." From:She Loves You (Parlophone single,1963) 15.Waterfalls by Katie Melua "My producer introduced me to this.I was going to cover it for my first album. We changed it to Wonderballs. It was about wanting,'Some wonderbollocks/just a hairy pair of bollocks.' McCartney heard it and apparently laughed his head off." From:McCartney II (Parlophone,1980) 16.When I'm Sixty-Four by comedian Stephen Merchant "I associate it with a weird aspect of The Beatles:their songs have overtaken their own recordings and are remembered as different things, like nursery rhymes. This is like a standard, like Roll Out The Barrel." From:Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Apple,1967) 17.Blackbird by Dave Grohl "The greatest Paul McCartney track? You can't answer this question,it's just not air,but I'm going to say Blackbird. It's such a beautiful piece of music, perfect in composition and performance, and in its lyrics and in the range of his voice.Just learning that song made me a better guitar player and gave me a better appreciation of songwriting. To me it's just musical bliss." From:The White Album (Apple,1968) 18.Oh! Darling by Florence Welch "This is my favorite Paul McCartney vocal.Apparently he sat on the wall at Abbey Road and screamed for hours before he recorded it.He's got an amazing soul voice, and this song is tortured but so searching.I got into The Beatles late as my dad's a Stones fan.I got Abbey Road for Christmas one year and that's when it clicked.I thought,What have I been doing with my life?I did a cover of Oh! Darling for a TV show.Did I scream for hours first?I didn't.I'd be far too worried about my vocal cords." From:Abbey Road (Apple,1969) 19.Hey Jude by Michael Caine "It's philosophical. It's deep. It's a deep song." 20.You Tell Me by Paul Weller "It's a track from his latest album, which came out a couple of years ago.For me,it's up there with his greatest work. The lyrics are brilliant and it's got Macca's fantastic melodic sense.Superb." From:Memory Almost Full (Hear Music,2007) |

I think the same thing about "Julia" versus "Revolution 9" and "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill." John was probably having the time of his life performing the latter two, but managed to write a deep and beautiful song like "Julia." |
