When is it okay? If ever. For example, someone who wants to get things like CS5, Windows Software, etc but who cannot afford the price. Is it okay if they pirate? Pirating out of need, rather then because they don't want to pay. |

I've never been one to be really against 'pirating' Not so much because it makes things free but rather it is the community going against the copyright laws (which are outdated mind you) and are forcing a change in the digital world. The copyright laws don't include the internet really. Did you know ou can be charge as a criminal for copy/paste of an image on google if it's not your own work? How stupid is that? With all the freedom the internet has the laws just don't work in this realm making everyone a criminal which is wrong. Our youth of today is being branded as criminals really. Of course most of the time the worst that happens is a youtube vid gets shutdown, or a user is warned their content was deleted due to copyright but that is just it, it shouldn't happen in the first place We should be able to use others stuff for fun purposes like a youtube vid as a creative outlet. Companies will argue it's hurting their name using their content in such ways but I call BS on that, it's probably helping and is basically free advertising. While copyright can protect the work of others I feel they hinder creativity of others who are just getting started. A creative commons copyright would be cool if it ever existed. As far as torrents go there is a lot of ignorance in this area to. Many self proclaiming haters of piracy say all torrents should be shut down now and if you use a torrent you are a pirate. Funny, I didn;t know ALL torrents only include illegal stuff. Oh yeah that is becasue they DON'T. A lot of those ignorant people fail to realize torrenting itself isn't bad and even the so called 'illegal' stuff I can argue is heloing rather than hurting. The whole reason why music is now so easily accessible on the web to buy from places like amazon and crap is becasue of torrents. They shaped the way consumers can buy stuff and in a positive way. The RIAA claims that music piracy only hurts the industry when in fact they are lying. Sure they lose a 'little' but it's nothing compared to the amount they are earning from it: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-9744037-16.html http://freakbits.com/9-reasons-piracy-helps-the-music-industry-1123 Not everyone agrees piracy is bad and I have to agree as well. It's making these companies wake up and realize they can't just sell whatever they want for an expensive price. On itunes and amazon songs are sold for only 99 cents a track which has never been heard of before. This never would have been possible without piracy in the first place. In closing, download at discretion is all I will say. There are some things you just can't get any other way. 1 great example is music soundtracks from games. Most music in video games are amazing imo. Sadly the 'official' tracks you can find in mainstream online stores are cut down versions of the good stuff. Why would I get something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-2/dp/B003NL11SI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1292466086&sr=8-1 when I could have ALL the music from the game that spans over 6+ hours worth from a fan made ripped version of the game? I already bought the $60 MW2 game so I shouldn't have to pay more for music that I already payed for that came with the game lol There may be laws against piracy but laws can change, it used to be illegal to drink way back in the day but now drinking is a completely legal thing. Guess how alcohol became legal? By piracy that's how, people smuggling it in and hiding it. Nowadays it's normal to drink. I feel the same way about software / digital forms of media. They should be sold at much cheaper prices or if the stuff is just going to be used for fun (not commercial use) it should be free. |

well technically pirating is stealing, but im ok with that. LOL nah really though i mean if they make a product that is just insanely priced why not? they make millions profit every year, if they were more inclined to take the price down then maybe more people would be willing to buy their product. just a small thought there. |
