John Spencer Mill were born into the Spencer-Mill whose roots would be tracked back to the Earldom of Spencer, John Spencer Mills grandfather the 6th Earl of Spencer were ousted from the ranks of peerage when his family was involved in attempted coup de etat against the Court of St. James. John was given amnesty to travel to England to join the ranks of god as a preacher and started serving in his local Boston Church after moving back to the Colonies.

On his third year in Oxford he served as an adviser to the MP from the school, (the major universities elected their own MPs) and tied bonds of friendship with several peers and members of the 'upper class'

During the war of independence Spencer-Mill organized local militias and was awarded by his constituencies with a seat in the House of Representatives.
