![]() Name: Ethan Alexander Mulready State: Rhode Island and Providence Plantations Birth Date: 12 July 1759 Birth Place: Newport, Rhode Island Place of Residence: Providence, Rhode Island Profession: Lawyer, Postmaster, Colonial Politician Alma Mater: College in the English Colony of Rhode Island & Providence Plantations (now Brown University) Religion: Episcopalian Born in the summer of 1759 to wealthy merchants William and Catherine Mulready, Ethan was raised in the town of Newport, Rhode Island. His great-granfather, Jonathan Mulready, served as a colonial Governor under King Charles I, shortly after the colony of Rhode Island was granted its Royal Charter. After attending the now-Brown University and obtaining a degree in laws, Ethan set up a small practice in the colonial capital of Providence, where he sat out the Revolution, carefully avoiding taking sides, despite his family's avowed Toryism, and focusing on the law. He was recruited into the state legislature by friends of his family, who arranged for his election as a Country Party member of the General Assembly at age 23. During his time in the General Assembly, he became known for his outspoken opposition to the practice of slavery, which put him at odds with both his father, whose shipping business was in part supported by the trade, as well as the state's powerful Brown family. After a short career in the General Assembly, Ethan sought and narrowly won election to Congress in 1789. Political views: -pro-Constitution -pro Bill of Rights -pro-British, anti-French (though quiet about both) -vehemently anti-slavery -anti Bank of the United States |
