Name: Lawrence Owen Birthdate: February 11th, 1749 in Devonport, England State: Pennsylvania Profession: Shipping Magnate Religious Beliefs: Ignostic Ethnic Background: Scots-English Biography: Lawrence Owen was born in Devonport England, the son of a shipping merchant, Rodney Owen who held prestigious shipping contracts with the Royal Navy. As the Owen family fortunes began to wane with the out-set of 1753, they chose to move to Philadelphia, where shipping interests were much more favorable and less competitive. The Owens quickly established a prosperous shipping trade, opening new routes to Scandanavia in particular. The French and Indian War proved to be fianancially prosperous for the Owens, but the post-war high taxes as well as the heavy handed British government drove the Owens off of the loyal moorings, deep into debt and pushed them firmly into supporting independence. It was in 1773 that Rodney Owen died, leaving Lawrence to restore the shattered family fortune. Lawrence built new ships and began successfully smuggling goods and operating on the black market trade in order to restore the family fortune, which he did sucessfully. Owen married Laura Davidson shortly before the outbreak of armed conflict which began the American Revolution. Using his fianancial interest to back Washington's army, Owen was one of the top suppliers as well as employer of privateering vessels for the Continentals. The Owens were forced to briefly flee Philadelphia until the end of the war, settling for a time in New Jersey before moving back. It was then Owen took up a keen interest in politics. Owen's politics often seemingly clashed with his patrician fianancial state. Long an advocate of the poor, Owen has proposed a number of radical measures looking to employ the lot of life of both the working class as well as the well-born. Owen also has come out four-square against slavery, belonging to several abolitionist societies. Personally moralistic, Owen is known to be ignostic, writing "The question of god is essentially meaningless to me. I am most interested in improving the lot of the world". That's ok. I'm patient. I'd like to join one of the political parties. Is there any forum where I can see which is closer to my own ideals? |

Well then first, where does your character's stances land on? The American Federals Party has been the more developed party, while the Free Republicans Party have been somewhat more silent for a while. Also after I here your character's views and they don't match up, you could end up forming your own political party! |

Well, generally favor a stronger federal government over state governments. Protectionist trading policy. Favors alliance with Britain over France. Somewhat hawkish on defense policy. Favors greater federal intervention to improve the lot of the poor through public spending. Anti-monarchy and strongly abolitionist. Generally an adherent of an early version of Henry Clay's American System with minor differences.

Well your views of a stronger federal government, with trade and defense policy, along with your abolitionary views, make the case for your movement into the American Federals Party. Though I must say, both the Federals and the Free Republicans are more pro-French with their leanings between Britain and France. Though I suppose since political parties can be varied, you could be a leader for the Anglophile wing of the American Federals. |

Considering that Owen's primary business interest is in shipping, Britain would be a more natural ally for him to feel at home with. The war, for him, is over and it's now time to look to primary interest. I'd have no problem joining the American Federals as long as they'd accept me. |
