My daughter and I have decided to finally make the trek to Asia. We want to focus on China (Hong Kong, Shanghai, etc.) and are currently doing research since we're not going until next year. Has anyone been? Are there places (other than the obvious) that you can recommend that we must see? We're very excited about it and can't wait!

Hong Kong is like a very intense NYC, if you can imagine. It is a very Western and beautiful city with great energy. If you can stay on Hong Kong island as that is where everything happens and venture out to the other islands.
Shanghai is very beautiful, not as traditional as Beijing but there are parts. I ventured out to the area that used to be a Jewish Ghetto and took pictures at the mosque and walked around the neighborhood. I took a 3 day Yangtze cruise that got a close up look of the new dam they are building that can be seen from space and the millions of people being displaced by this project.
China was a bit difficult for me as I had been in Australia for 2 months and this was my first run in with complete culture shock. The couchsurf I had prepared had fallen through, so I ended up at a hotel, which you can get for a song through Orbitz. I stayed at the Chongqing Hilton for 40 bucks a night! I couchsurfed in Hong Kong and stayed a the Yangtze Hotel in Shanghai. When I go back I will be ready for a more local interaction, but the hotel gave me refuge from the stress of being gawked and pointed at during the day.

Let me know if you want more info.

Q,
That was very helpful, thank you. We're not petite either, so I suspect we may get similar gawking, but that's ok. We're won't let that spoil the trip...as I continue to do research, I may want to bend your ear again. Since this is a new endeavor, I don't quite know what to ask at this point. But just give me a little time...... ^_^
