Description
Physical Description:
Ariel is very tall, at 5’8”, her size was the source of much criticism back in school. She is no longer “freakishly big” but well rounded with curves in the right places and long legs that would make a man’s blood rush given the appropriate adornment. She has filled out well, with a good sized chest, and waist but doesn’t spend much time worrying about her body or her appearance. She takes care of her health, as a good healer should and so being fit comes on its own. Ariel has never thought of herself as being pretty, though her parents would argue that she is. She has long wavy brown hair and blue-grey eyes. Her skin is very pale, being a short lived race.

She rarely gives a second thought to her attire, finding comfort to be her priority as she is usually always working. She dresses in casual pants and flat, suede or leather boots, mostly. Her tops vary from tee shirts to sweatshirts and occasionally one with a collar or a black petticoat, scarf, hat and mittens, should the weather call for it, however, she will not be adorning these items when she arrives in Dea al Mon.

Personality:
Personally, Ariel is very formal and distant. She is a professional when it comes to work and is well trained in the areas of protocol, having lived at court most of her life. She is not apt to share much information with others, resulting in a somewhat mysterious personality, however, there isn’t much to tell since her childhood was far from traumatic and she doesn’t like to talk about the pain she did experience. She also tries not to get too attached to her patients since the loss of her mother.

When provoked, Ariel is no less than a cold hearted bitch. She doesn’t feel an emotional pull towards anyone and so, if pissed off she will lose nothing by being snarky and intolerant. Because she is a healer she expects that when her services are being provided, her instructions are to be listened to and she isn’t to receive any sass. If her patient would rather die, who is she to argue?

Ariel would be hesitant to form any kind of relationship with anyone and would feel conflicted if one should start. Deep down, she needs comfort again but is terrified of the hurt that would come with it after losing two of the three people who mattered most in her life and feeling slightly abandoned by the other.

Likes: Working, Reading, the idea of writing a novel, exploring Dea al Mon, trying new foods

Dislikes: Difficult patients, relationships, junk food, being stuck inside for too long, babies – she doesn’t hate them, they just make her feel awkward in none patient-healer situations

History

Ariel was born to an Opal jewelled Healer and a Rose jewelled Warlord named Karyn and Annik Kayos, who loved each other and their daughter very much. She was a happy child, basking in the loving attention of her parents and striving to meet their high, but reasonable expectations.

An only child, Ariel was her mother’s prodigy, having been born a healer. Her parents began teaching her the ways of the blood, protocol and the healing and simpler craft, as soon as she could comprehend the things they told her. Since Ariel began to learn things beyond her age, she didn’t fit in well with her peers and found herself preferring the company of adults and her parents, especially.

Ariel’s father was in the first circle of a District Queen so the family lived at court. She found an interest in observing the people at court, seeing protocol and professionalism in action made her understand the concepts she learned much better. She also listened to conversations and understood adult problems and interests. There weren’t any other children at court, so Ariel grew up quickly.

Her mother was eventually appointed the court’s healer. She watched her mother in action and stayed quiet while she worked. Her mother would teach her every moment that she could and Ariel’s observation skills and keen desire to understand had her learning very quickly. By the age of ten, Ariel was her mother’s reliable assistant. She knew how to do simple healings and make medicinal brews on her own and were given these tasks by her mother often.

As Ariel grew older, even adults were often shocked by her maturity and the amount of knowledge the adolescent had. The truth was, Ariel was often teased at school and didn’t feel as though she fit in there, but found comfort in her work at home, with her mother. By the time she was fourteen, she was just short of being a full fledged Healer. Her mother left her charges all the time and had complete confidence in her daughter’s skills.

When Ariel was sixteen, the district Queen took on a new Master of the Guard who moved to court with his son who was just seventeen years old. The connection between Ariel and Calum was undeniable. They took to each other right away and became instant friends, sharing their life stories and spending long nights under the stars. It was less than a month before the two were head over heels for each other and Ariel swore she would be with Calum forever.

Calum told her stories of the places he had travelled. He told her of a lush place full of wonder. It was called Deal al Mon. He described to how different the people were from those in Little Tereille. Ariel thought of the place often and hoped to go there one day and use her skills to help the people there, while exploring it. She worked hard to learn everything she could and became fully certified before her seventeenth birthday. Her parents worried that she would leave Little Tereille and told her often that they hoped that she would stay. There was nothing there to protect her from the harm they could only imagine without really knowing.

Not long after Ariel became certified, her mother became very ill. Ariel tried everything, pouring her heart and soul into her healing craft. Over the years, she and her mother had become very close. The healer was her mentor and very best friend, besides Calum. The illness was terminal and there was nothing Ariel could do to save her mother, despite the effort.

Ariel spent all day and all night testing brews and working her craft to find a cure. She poured herself over books in hopes of finding the answer. Unfortunately, her mother’s death came swiftly and she was taken, her soul returning to the darkness before Ariel or Annik were ready to see her go.

Ariel became deeply depressed, as did her father. She found herself reversing roles with her only parent and suddenly, she was the one caring for him even though she still hadn’t come of age. Her only comfort was Calum, who quickly grew tired of the sullen atmosphere and began to pull away from her. The District Queen offered Karyn’s position to Ariel and she took it out of duty. Her father had resigned from the Queen’s court and so, someone had to pay the bills.

Ariel eventually hired someone to look after Annik, and did her best to mend things with Calum. It wasn’t long until she saw him courting a new witch and Ariel accepted that things were over for them. She had hardened from her experience and learned something about healing as well.

It wasn’t uncommon for a healer to throw their whole selves into a healing, trying to find the answers to health mysteries or using their reservoirs of power to save another and not realize that they are slowly killing themselves. A healer’s death in the healing process happened often enough that healers had to practice self care so as not to burn themselves out.

After Karyn’s death, Ariel learned that healing was simply a job that needed to be done. She hardened and was unable to connect with her patients the way that her mother had. Ariel was an excellent healer, she knew an extremely large amount of theory, had made her own discoveries and eventually published her own books on the subject that were used for teaching the craft. However, she distanced herself from them, and saw her job as simply a task, a matter to be dealt with. She no longer cried when she failed. It was no longer personal.

Ariel’s hardness was not only in regards to her work. The deterioration of her relationship with Calum also made her distant in personal relationships. She no longer felt the need to connect, to share her feelings, or really feel anything. Her two strongest attachments had pulled away and her father, the only one she had left, was a whimpering child without Karyn there. Ariel went on this way for years.

When Ariel turned 23, her father threw her a pathetic little party. They talked and ate cake together and he asked her about her adolescent dreams of healing while travelling Dea al Mon. In truth, Ariel had forgotten of her ambitions and brushed off the idea but her father pushed her, apologizing for his selfishness and not realizing that his only daughter’s life was passing her by. She still hadn’t even completed her offering.

Finally, Ariel agreed, and Annik took his daughter to the altar to make her offering, where she walked away with her descent. Ariel was satisfied and felt ready to become independent and travel the land that she had heard so much about but was unsure what she would do when she got there. Her dreams had been forged from a young and naive heart, whereas she had felt love and loss since then and wasn’t sure how she would feel in such a different place. Could she handle it without letting it get to her?

Ariel left Little Tereille for Dea al Mon, kissing her father goodbye and promising to send word when she was safe and well established there.
