The ride to Shalador had been excruciatingly long. Ella was very eager to get there, though she hadn’t wanted to leave either. She had been grumpy with Lia and hadn’t really gotten to the part where she felt guilty about it, yet. “I’ll ride with you,” Lia had said. “No,” Ella replied. “I’ll go alone. It will be fine.” She shoved some clothes she had just had washed into her trunk. “I know it will be fine, but I want to take you. You’re only sixteen and it’s a very long ride.” Lia was standing in her doorway, ready to go and trying to do the nurturing mother thing, which was driving Ella nuts, as it usually did when she was in one of these moods. “Yeah, a ride you don’t need to make twice. I don’t want you to come,” she snapped. Lia seemed hurt by the comment. She said nothing and gave Ella a curt nod before leaving the room. Ella continued to finish her packing and vanished the trunk, pulling on a black leather bomber jacket and wrapping a light purple scarf around her neck. She pulled on her leather boots with the buckles on the side and grabbed her oversized purse, slinging it over her shoulder. “Is the carriage outside?” she asked as she passed Lia who was obviously trying to hide how upset she really was. She nodded, so Ella nodded back and bounded down the stairs and out the front of the eyrie, not waiting for Lia to arrive before calling in her things and stowing them in the carriage, so as not to drain her jewels through the long ride. Lia stood beside with her hands in her pockets. “I can tell you’re upset,” she said. “But I still love you and I’m going to miss you and I’m sad to see you go so you need to give me a proper goodbye.” She smiled despite her hurt feelings. Ella refrained from rolling her eyes. She climbed out of the carriage and wrapped her arms around Lia half-heartedly. Lia squeezed and held on for a while. “I really will miss you, Kiddo.” She kissed her on the head and pulled away, keeping hold of her shoulders so she could look her in the eyes. “Great, okay.” she smirked off the awkwardness like the teenager that she was. “I love you too, can I go now?” Lia grinned and nodded, helping who had become her little girl into the carriage. Ella wasn’t so little now and could do the journey on her own, but it was clear that Lia was sad to see her go. “I’ll write you when I arrive safely,” she promised her pseudo-mother, than shut the carriage door and tried to get herself comfortable for the long journey ahead. Now that it was over, Ella was glad. She wanted to stretch as the somewhat large carriage space had seemingly become smaller and smaller as the hours went by. Her driver wore the Opal, jewels darker than her own but they had travelled to the gates into Askavi Tereille and into the territory of Shalador until they made it to Crescent Province and Lady Sienna Ryer’s manor and the ride was long despite his jewels. The entire ride, Ella had been eager to see the Black Widow Queen who had agreed to take her on as a ward. She was clutching her left hand with her right, both in leather gloves because the snake tooth inside her finger was full of venom and Ella hadn’t known what to do with it, so she had done nothing. Now it was swollen and anything that touched it cause it to burn in pain. Beyond that, Ella was itching with sensations that she had never experienced before and could absolutely not talk about with anyone. She was hesitant to bring it up with Lady Ryer but felt that it might be a part of being a black widow, which was so new and confusing to Ella. Her curiosity had peaked, the kind of curiosity that could get a young girl in trouble, especially a young girl who had yet to have her virgin night and who lacked the presence of a father. Ella wasn’t stupid, she knew the trouble she could find herself in, which is why she was so looking forward to the guidance of an experienced Black Widow Queen. The carriage stopped outside the manor and Ella stared up at it will awe. “We have arrived, Lady Snow,” he said. Ella burst from the carriage before he had come to a complete stop and reached for the sky in a huge stretch. “Oh, that feels good,” she said, laughing. She was in a better mood, though her excitement for fresh air and space made her finger throb. She winced and cradled her hand against her. Just as she saw lady Ryer approaching, Ella bit her lip and slipped her hands behind her back, breathing to control the pain. She smiled at the Queen and held out her hands for the formal greeting, expecting pain when their fingers touched. |

Black Widow Queen of Shalador, Terreille

The Manor of the Territory Queen and her Court had been in an uproar for weeks in preparation for the arrival of Ella Snow, a young Black Widow Queen from Askavi, Kaeleer. Sienna had received a letter weeks ago from Lia Shilace about accepting her ward as a student and she had graciously accepted. The Black Widow Queen caste was a rare one and who better to teach the child than a woman that shared her gifts. Today was the day Ella was to arrive. Sienna had her entire household in a frenzy because she wanted everything to be absolutely perfect. She wanted the teenager to like her. Being an only child and the youngest of her cousins she’d never dealt with teens, her only experience with children was her little boy who chose that moment to come racing through the foyer of the Manor, startling his poor mother half to death. “Luc! Stop running!” Sienna called after the boy who immediately slowed. “Dad and Uncle Jethro started it!” the three year old objected. “Caleb. Jethro.” Sienna said sweetly, turning toward the direction Luc had darted into the room from. The two men slunk into the foyer to face the irate Queen. “You know that I want everything to be perfect when she arrives. How can we make a good first impression with you two resorting to acting like children? One child in this Manor is enough.” “Yea Caleb, act like a man.” Jethro quipped, thumping the other man in the back of the head. Caleb retaliated quickly. “Attend!” Sienna barked before the scuffle got out of control. “If you two are going to act like children and not the Aristo gentlemen you were raised to be then leave. I won’t have you two acting like children when Ella arrives.” “Sorry Witchling.” Caleb soothed approaching his fussy Queen. “We will act like gentlemen. You worry to much. The girl will like it here, I promise you.” “Will she like me?” Sienna murmured, accepting her Consort’s comforting embrace. “She won’t, she’ll write back to Lady Shilace and want to go back to Kaeleer.” “You will be fine Witchling, she will love you. I love you.” Caleb soothed. “She won’t be here for a while. Stop fretting for a bit.” Caleb tugged his Queen toward her office while Jethro made a quick getaway with Luc. “Caleb,” she protested, “She’ll be here any minute.” “Christopher will let us know when she arrives, as he always does.” Caleb pointed out. “Oh alright.” Sienna blushed and quickly followed her Consort into her office. She giggled as Caleb spun her into the room and pushed her against the expansive bookshelf. “The books? Again?” she questioned as Caleb nuzzled her neck. “The books, the desk, the floor.” He murmured. They had only been alone for a couple of minutes before Luc burst through the door, sending the couple scrambling away from one another. “Mama, Mama, Mama, the Coach is here!” he announced proudly. “Thank you darling. Can you go find your Uncle Jethro and tell him to meet me in the foyer?” Sienna smiled down at the child. She ruffled his hair before he darted back out of the room. “That was close.” Caleb chuckled. “We forgot to lock the door.” “She’s here.” Sienna squeaked. “I have to meet her at the door!” She said, flying out of the room and toward the front door. She slowed to a more Queenly pace as she pulled the door open and descended the steps to meet the girl. She smiled as the girl stretched her arms to the sky, it must have been a long uncomfortable ride coming from another Realm. Frowning slightly as she saw the girl wince in obvious pain before cradling her hand to her body. Being young and inexperienced the girl must not have known how to take care of her snake tooth and it was probably infected. Sienna resolved to assist the girl as soon as they possibly could, and made her way to greet her. Holding her hands out in a formal greeting she approached the younger woman. “Welcome to Shalador Lady Snow.” Sienna smiled softly, gently accepting the girl’s hands. “And welcome to our home. Come, let’s get you inside. You must be exhausted.” The Queen said, leading the girl up the steps into the Manor. “We’ll save a majority of the introductions and the tour of the Manor for later. We have more pressing things to deal with, but for starters. If you need anything just ring for Christopher or Kaelian, they will take care of you.” At that moment Caleb and Jethro appeared with Luc. “This darling is my son Luc, and his father Caleb, my Consort. Jethro is my cousin and First Escort.” “Welcome to our home Lady Snow.” Caleb bowed. “Hi Lady Ella! My mama is excited you’re here.” Luc announced. “She’s worried you won’t like her. I’m excited you’re here too. I’ve always wanted a sister.” “Boys.” Sienna sighed and shook her head. “Come, lets get you taken care of.” She led the girl to the third floor of the Manor and down to the end of the hall. “My suite is just up the stairs, along with Caleb’s and Trevlin’s if you need something. My Master of the Guard is right next door. If you have a problem during the night feel free to go to him.” She said gesturing toward the stairs and then to the door next to the room they were standing in front of. “This will be your room. If you don’t like it, we have many others you may choose from.” Sienna swung the door open and let Ella pass through first to inspect the room. “I hope you like it. We weren’t sure how you would like it decorated, so we left it as it was when we arrived. Perhaps we can make a day of shopping for things to make it your own. If you like to read there is a large library on the second floor. There are hundreds of Craft books. You are welcome to read any of them you wish to, but there are some things you just can’t learn from books. Here, let me see your hand.” She soothed. She spent the next couple of hours teaching the younger Black Widow how to care for her snake tooth and about many things a Black Widow needs to know. |

Ella’s first impression of Sienna was that the Black Widow Queen didn’t look anything like she had expected. For one, she was much younger that her experience made her out to be, and secondly, Ella wasn’t expecting the brilliant red hair. She hadn’t met Lady Ryer when she and Lia had travelled to Shalador, she had chosen to stay in that day and Lia had met the Queen on her own, and corresponded with her afterwards about this very opportunity. Since then, Ella had been conjuring an image of the Queen which was very different from the Queen who stood before her. She had to admit, though, this Queen seemed like a lot more fun – especially when the darling little boy appeared. “Oh, hello,” she said, grinning at him and nodding her hello to the Queen’s consort and first escort. She was amused by the little boy’s betrayal to his mother’s concerns and found his image of her as his sister to be endearing. “It’s very nice to meet you,” she said, leaning down to his level. “I would love to have a little brother, myself.” She grinned and followed the Queen through her manor. They climbed to the third floor before arriving at her new room. Ella called in her things and resolved to put them away later. The room was simple, with a canopy bed and white linens and curtains. There was a dark wood desk and dresser matching the bed and an attached bathroom with a large soaker tub, shower and vanity. Ella was pleased with it and it was apparent from the look of awe on her face. “I love it, it’s beautiful,” she said, taking inventory of the assortment of shelves in the large walk in closet. “I have some of my own things to help dress it up but I will let you know if I need anything else.” As she stared around the room she decided where she would hang photos, put lamps and rugs, then turned back to her Queen. “Thank you so much, Lady Ryer, I am really grateful for this opportunity.” She gave the Black Widow her hand and winced when she touched it, although she was very gentle. They sat on her bed while Lady Ryer called in two vials for the venom. She demonstrated on her own hand, showing Ella where to squeeze so that the venom came out smoothly and evenly. Ella tried on her own finger but cried out in pain, allowing her mentor to do it for her. It hurt, still, but less than her own attempt. The first bits of venom that came out were solid and crystallized like grains of yellowed sugar. When the venom started to come out with ease, the pressure in Ella’s finger started to cease. She sighed in relief and continued to milk the tooth on her own with Lady Ryer’s supervision. “Oh, that feels so much better,” she said. “Thank you.” Lady Ryer instructed her how to store the vial to preserve the venom and how often the tooth needed to be milked. “I had no idea,” Ella admitted. “I guess that’s why Lia sent me here.” She smiled. “I can’t wait to learn more. I’ll have to check out your library. It’s all so new to me.” |

First Escort to the Queen of Shalador, Warlord Prince of Sayaia

After greeting the new arrival, Jethro and Luc decided to go investigate the kitchen. It wasn’t suppertime just yet, but they could smell cookies. Although it ran contrary to the serious persona that Jethro maintained as First Escort, he would never turn down cookies. Luc asked him, “Uncle Jethro, can we go get some cookies?” Jethro smiled and replied, “What about supper? Would Mama approve?” Luc hung his head and mumbled a negative. Jethro chuckled, and swung Luc to his shoulder, wrapping them both in an Ebon-Gray sight shield. “Then let’s go grab some cookies.” The pair snuck down the stairs and into hallway outside the kitchen. Peeking inside, Luc gave an all-clear, and the Jethro, still carrying Luc, began to silently move towards the cooling rack where rows of chocolate chunk cookies awaited the two thieves. “Jethro Rayne, you get away from those cookies!” came a thundering command. Jethro froze in his tracks, then dropped the sight shield and turned to meet his fate. Sienna’s cook advanced on the two, brandishing a rolling pin. “You should be ashamed of yourself, spoiling the boy’s supper! And with a guest in the house, too! Sweet Darkness! I’m surprised anybody gets a decent meal around here, with you two constantly bothering me with your pitiful attempts to steal sweets like a couple of three year olds!” “But I am three,” Luc objected, to Jethro’s amusement, but he shushed the boy and began to make a quick escape. However, his curiosity overcame him at the door, and he paused to ask, “How did you catch us this time?” “You left footprints in the spilled flour, genius.” “Thanks, Cooky. It won’t happen again. The flour part, I mean,” Jethro clarified with a grin as he and Luc made good their escape. As they fled, Cooky called after them, “Make yourselves useful and tell Lady Sienna that supper’ll be ready in half an hour!” Jethro set Luc down, and holding his hand, marched up the stairs to Sienna’s sitting room where she and Ella had been for some time now. He knocked, and upon receiving permission to enter, strode in, Luc beside him mimicking his every move, and the two cookie bandits snapped to attention, bowed, and Jethro announced, “My Lady, Cooky commands that I inform you that dinner will be served in half an hour.” Sienna laughed and asked, “What happened this time? What did you get caught trying to steal?” Ignoring Jethro’s previous orders, Luc blabbed, and the two Black Widows laughed at the thought of an Ebon-Gray Warlord Prince being caught stealing cookies and chased from the battlefield by a woman with a rolling pin. |

The two Black Widows were enjoying their talks when they were interrupted by a knock. “Enter,” Sienna called out. The door swung open to reveal Jethro and Luc. Sienna knew immediately they’d been caught at one of their pranks again. ”My Lady, Cooky commands that I inform you that dinner will be served in half an hour.” Jethro announced with a bow, which little Luc mimicked. “What happened this time? What did you get caught trying to steal?” Sienna laughed. ”We sneakeded into the kitchen to steal a cookie. I was hungry.” Luc admitted sheepishly. “Cooky chased Uncle Jethro away with one of them dough squishers.” “She did, did she?” Sienna laughed. “Very well, thank you for the announcement. We will be down shortly. Do try not to eat all of the food before we arrive. Hmm?” She chuckled, eyeing Jethro. ”Yes, ma’am!.” Jethro saluted her and spun out of the room, followed closely by Luc. “My boys,” Sienna chuckled. “This is completely normal. I had hoped that they would behave for at least a short while, but alas, boys will be boys.” Ella laughed softly at the older woman’s statement. “Jethro has always been there for me. He is my cousin. When I set up my Court in my home village he became my First Escort and has held that position for a majority of the time in which I have had my Court. He left me for a while after his dear wife Shannon was brutally murdered by marauders on her way to the Shalako Manor. Our entire family was devastated, but Jethro most of all. He was deeply in love with her and he blames himself for her death.” Sienna explained quietly. “But enough of the past. My Court has changed much since then. I have a new Steward, and a Consort now.” Sienna blushed slightly “Who is soon to be my husband.” She giggled. “Will you help me finish planning?” She waited for the little Queen’s response before rushing on ahead with her plans. “I hope that the other Territory Rulers will answer my invitations and come to the wedding. I would dearly love to meet them. I already have conformation that Lady Faine Scarta of Glacia shall attend with her Consort and a couple of other members of her First Circle. The other Queens have yet to respond, but I’m sure they will! Perhaps you would like to write to Lady Shilace and invite her to come as well?” A bell chimed throughout the Manor, signaling the meal had been served. “Well, are you ready to meet the rest of my Household?” Sienna smiled. The two women made their way casually downstairs, everyone else seemed to have already been at the table. They entered and everything stopped. “Ladies, Gentlemen, this is Lady Ella Snow, she has come to live with us for a time.” Mummers of greeting echoed throughout the hall. “I’ve already introduced you to Caleb, my Consort, and my son Luc, and you’ve met Jethro. This is my Steward Trevlin Reage.” She continued down the table, naming different members of the Court and Household as they went until they reached the head of the table. |

Ella was feeling in a much lighter mood with her snake tooth no longer burning. When she and Sienna were interrupted by Jethro and Luc, Ella couldn’t help but smile. The child was honestly adorable and Ella didn’t mind being around him at all. She would love to play with him or teach him things if given the chance. She had never been around children before, really. Even though Jethro wasn’t Luc’s father, the sight of the two made her a little sad. It was moments like these that she missed her father. She hadn’t been much older than Luc when he disappeared. Though Ella couldn’t remember her father being a troublemaker, he certainly had been able to play with her on her own level. She had admired him for so much, had even thought he was invincible. But all children learn, eventually, that their parents are just people, and her father had only worn the white and tiger eye. She had learned about his mortality at a very, very young age. When they took off, Ella smiled sadly and listened about Sienna’s consort. She realized that she was not the only one suffering from the loss of a loved one and it made her respect Jethro all the more for how happy he could make Darling Luc despite what he, himself had gone through. Ella nodded. “A wedding? How exciting, I would love to help you,” she said. “You’ve already sent out invitations? So it must be pretty soon then.” The bell rang to signal dinner before Ella could respond about inviting Lia. She wasn’t sure if she wanted her here or not. “Ready as I’ll ever be,” Ella teased. She was excited to meet the rest of the household. She had liked everyone so far. She smiled as they entered the dining room and she was introduced by Lady Ryer. She nodded at them and waved shyly. “Hello.” She tried to memorize each name and face as Sienna went around the table introducing everyone but when she finished she knew it would take more times than that for some of them. “Pleased to meet all of you.” The meal was delicious. Sienna sat at the head of the table with Jethro and Caleb at her side. Luc sat beside Caleb and Ella, beside Luc. “How’s it tasting?” Ella asked the little boy to make some conversation. He licked his lips and simply said ‘mmm’ before shoving more food in his mouth. Ella laughed at his innocence and agreed that the food was mmm. Lots of people asked Ella questions. Where was she from? How old was she? Who were her parents? The latter made Ella swallow hard. “My mother was Saharian Snow, a province Queen in Askavi, Kaeleer, but she died when I was a baby. I’ve been living with Lian Shilace, though, in Askavi. She also ruled a province but stepped down not too long ago.” Ella shrugged. She didn’t want to explain that her father, Jaegar Snow, had been Lia’s consort and had disappeared ten years ago and was never heard from again. It was far too much drama to be disclosing at a dinner with so many people listening. Ella wasn’t the kind of person who disclosed her whole life to strangers. In fact, she preferred to disclose nothing. When the meal was finished, she approached Lady Ryer. “Thank you, for everything. The meal was delicious. If you don’t mind, though, I’d like to return to my room and get myself settled.” Ella’s mood was a bit darker after the questions. Being in a new place was starting to sink in. She wondered if her father would know where to find her now, if he was still capable of even looking. |

Sienna presided over the meal from the head of the table. She watched her Court interact with the new arrival, very pleased that they were all on their best behavior. Even little Luc was quietly eating his dinner while the adults questioned Lady Snow. Sienna watched as a shadow crossed the girl’s face at the question of her parents. She knew about the girl’s mother dying, but had never heard any mention of her father. She felt sorry for the poor girl, knowing what it was like to lose a mother at birth and never know her. Knowing Ella’s situation only made Sienna miss her own father all the more. Caleb gave her a questioning look, no doubt wondering what she was thinking as the emotions crossed her face. She turned and gave him a brilliant smile and squeezed his hand. *I’m fine my love, * she sent on a psychic thread to the mind she knew so very well. Dinner continued on with random questions being thrown at the girl from various members of the Court. Sienna straightened up quickly when she felt the light psychic probe of her High Priestess and friend. The woman sounded startled when she asked for an audience. Sienna quickly responded with her approval and assurance that she would be there shortly. She leaned over to Jethro to whisper “Kam is back.” She smiled at the way he grinned like an idiot at the mention of his lover. The meal was concluded and everyone awaited the two Queens to rise and exit first. Ella thanked Sienna for the meal and asked to retire. “Of course darling. You may do what you will here. I have some urgent business to attend to, Caleb will see you to your room.” She gestured to her Consort standing close by. “Get yourself settled in, we’ll start our lessons next week so you have plenty of time to explore the Manor and the town.” She told her. “I shall see you at breakfast.” With that she hurried off toward the library to meet with Kameron. |

Ella said her goodbyes to Lady Ryer’s court and was escorted back to her room by her consort. She felt awkward walking with him as she didn’t know him very well yet but she chose not to make it more awkward by making small talk. She was content being silent and he seemed content with it too. When they arrived at her room, she nodded and offered him a smile. “Thank you,” she said and turned to her room which was quiet and peaceful. Ella felt ready to settle herself. She had had a long day and an excellent meal and was looking forward to making the space around her all her own. She called in her trunk and opened it, revealing all of her most prized possessions. She smiled at the contents and started pulling them out. Her fuzzy deep purple blanket, some pillows, an old teddy bear her father had given her and countless books, articles of clothing and accessories. She put all the clothes away, made her bed the way that she liked it and laid out her toiletries in her bathroom. When she felt that everything was in it’s rightful place, she decided to soak in the large tub with bath oils. When she felt like she had soaked away anything and everything that might possibly stress her, she climbed out and readied for bed, snuggling up with one of her books on black widow craft. As she read, and her eyes grew heavy, Ella felt like the next chapter of her life was finally beginning. |
