Caleb wasn’t sure how he was going get out of this one. For that matter, he wasn’t sure how he had gotten in to this mess in the first place.

The day had started out normally. He had gotten up on time, helped Sienna with a few court and wedding issues before taking Luc out shopping. And that was where the trouble had started.

It wasn’t the first time the Hart men had ventured out into the town to explore, to spend some father-son time and to find little treasures to bring home to their lady. Today, Caleb had wanted to pick up a few books for Sienna the bookstore was holding for him, so he had brought his son, since it was an unusually warm day and the little boy had been getting cabin fever.

Caleb still wasn’t sure how he had managed to forget his son. He usually kept a close eye on his son, never taking an eye off him for more than a few seconds while they were on the streets; in fact, most of the time he insisted the little boy hold his hand. So the fact that the little boy was no where to be seen was more than a bit frightening. In the bookstore, Luc had wandered away, but the clerks in the store all knew the little boy and would have returned the child to his father. But for some reason, he had completely forgotten he had brought Luc with him and walked right out of the bookstore after making his purchases and left him. It wasn’t until he had passed the bakery and started wondering if Luc would like a sweet roll before he remembered that he had brought the boy with him.

Appalled at himself, he had rushed back to the store and almost tore the place apart looking for the small boy. When he couldn’t find him, his worry turned to full blown panic. Nothing like this had ever happened to him and he had absolutely no idea where to look for his son. Frantic, he questioned everyone he saw, showing them the little portrait of Luc he carried with him. No one had seen the boy.

He had spent half an hour looking, occasionally even flashing his Consort ring to get people’s attention. Nothing. More and more, it was looking like the little boy had really vanished. And Caleb was not looking forward to explaining the situation to his fiancée.

Helena had been on her way to the Territory court. Of course, she had been "on her way" there for about three days, and just not getting up the nerve to actually go to the building. Sure she had the credentials. She had every reason to believe that they would accept her. She knew they needed an official Healer.

She had never had this problem before. District courts. Province courts. Courts of queens that hated her for being light jeweled. Courts ruled by men that made her remember her lost lover. The sight of the Queen and her little boy had unstrung Helena's resolve though.

The slender young healer twists her hands into a complicated knot as she considers again her failure.

She was drawn out of her reverie at the sound of a giggle. The giggle of a very small boy being very naughty. The light jeweled healer bit her lower lip, then carefully snuck up to the corner where the giggle had come from.

The book store across the street seemed to be in an uproar, clerks rushing to and fro and books flying while the child watched. Both hands covered his mouth, but the giggles still leaked out around his chubby fingers.

Helena smiles at the sight, then tapped the little boy on the shoulder. "I think you are in trouble, young man. What do you say we go sit down a bit and wait for the book storm to calm down?"

And that is how the brightly dressed Healer ended up with the Queen's son, sitting in a bakery and eating cookies while Caleb rushed around outside.

Caleb was starting to feel desperate. He had really done it this time. He had lost his son. There was no way he was going to get out of this one with Sienna.

He had torn apart the bookstore, and come up with nothing. Same with the surrounding stores and streets. At this point, he was debating going back to the palace and (quietly) recruiting Jethro to help him look for Luc. Hopefully, the Ebon-grey Warlord Prince wouldn't blab to their Queen about Caleb's negligence. Then again, after the prank he had played on Jethro the week before, the Warlord Prince might talk just to get him back.

On second thought, maybe he should leave Jethro out of it.

As he stepped out of the bookstore, he heard it. A giggle he knew very well. It was Luc’s “I’ve got an unexpected treat and I’m loving it” laugh. Whirling around, he zeroed in on the witch who was sitting by the bakery with his son. Before he had time to think about it, he was at Luc’s side, putting himself between his son and the foreign witch, straddling the killing edge as he dove for his Grey power.

“Who are you?!” he demanded, throwing a tight shield around his little boy as he called a hunting knife to his hand. He was so focused on protecting his son, he didn’t focus on anything else. So the sounds of Luc’s terror at seeing his normally laid-back and playful parent rising to the killing edge went unheard. “What do you think you are doing with him?!”

Helena had been grinning at the boy, unaware of the tears that gathered in her eyes. It was torture for her to spend time with a child, especially one so close in age to the babe that she would have had. The milk and cookies they had shared were reduced to crumbs by then, and soon she would have suggested going to find his mother.

That was before Caleb burst in. Helena saw only an enraged male at first and it did not occur to her that the Warlord Prince was right to be angry. After all, no one was hurt and the boy was with a responsible adult. She grabbed Luc's hand, panicking a little and hissing, "Look out!".

Then poor Luc was caught between the two of them. Helena was shocked to find herself wrapped in Caleb's shield as well as Luc is whipped out of the booth and she is dragged along with him. Her own rose shield was a heartbeat later, as useful as a layer of soap on Caleb's shield.

When she caught her breath, she could finally say, "I am keeping him safe! He's the Queen's son and I am the Court Healer!" The sight of the knife made her only more desperate to hold on to Luc, in case the male turned on the boy and she needed to heal him. "Who are You?"
