(Timeline: after “Lying In Wait”) Kaelian let out a long breath before cautiously lifting the curtain beside her bed, biting her lip as she peered through the pane. She wilted, however, when the glass fogged over with her breath, smudging over the view of the serene, snow-covered palace grounds in the twilight before dawn. When she’d heard the night before that there was a forecast of more snow she had crossed her fingers, had even prayed to the Darkness before going to sleep that nature would relent and allow her fair weather for her trip to town. Nature, however, had apparently decided to make her miserable. Kael liked lots of things—in fact, there wasn’t much that bugged her to the point of her being bold enough to state that she actually disliked it. But snow happened to be pretty high on that list of despised things. Turning away from the window defeated, Kaelian put off her intended trip into Shea for a less snow-impeded day. She called in her Purple Dusk Jewel and dressed in a simple gray skirt and a deep violet sweatshirt before slipping into a pair of fuzzy moccasins. As she braided her hair in front of the mirror she realized it looked drastically informal from her attire of the past few weeks in her new position as Housekeeper of Shalador, but she was too depressed to really care. She looked cute enough as she called in a purple ribbon to tie up the braid. Slipping out of her suite she passed down to the small room that served as her office and also informal storage space. She had adjusted to her new position well and got along with the family of the Manor well the few times she had encountered them. Kaelian had never had an office before, but then again she’d never had such a prestigious position. Within the Hearth Witch circle of a world, being Housekeeper of the Territory ruler was about as big as it got. Picking up the day’s itinerary she checked the list and noticed that the Queen had some guests coming in a few days. Kaelian would have to make sure she got some maids up to clean the requested rooms for the visitors. Otherwise, her day looked about normal. That was if the members of the household didn’t decide to surprise her with some kind of mess. Apparently the men (and a few of the ladies) in this family knew how to get into mischief and did it often. Kaelian had yet to encounter anything other than tracked-in mud, some flour spill in the kitchen, and some filthy clothing, but she was counting her blessings daily. Hopefully today wouldn’t be the day that they chose to tip over the new Housekeeper’s decent schedule. Kael didn’t really feel like having an aneurism but she was sure she could easily be provoked to it with the mood she was in. The snow was so depressing… Folding up the paper and vanishing it she began stalking through the halls of the Shea Manor. Since she wasn’t going to be able to get out and everyone else was still asleep she might as well get to work on her day’s tasks. Some of the drapes needed taken down and washed and the sills and windows dusted and cleaned. And the floor in the main hall could use a scrubbing before everyone starting roaming across it. That settled it. She smiled as she came into the main hall, humming a happy little tune into the silent halls. There were a few small sounds from the other early risers of the staff waking up, but otherwise it was just her and the calm pre-dawn hours. Kaelian made quick work of mopping the floor and was finishing just as the sun was peeking over the horizon. The floor still had a slick sheen from its washing so she put up a little spell to make anyone who tried to cross her clean floor at least notice it was wet. Satisfied with her work she hurried off to the parlors and began taking down the curtains. Vanishing part of them she packed a few of the dirtier ones with her toward the back of the building to the laundry room, peering around the mound of fabric bundled up in her little arms. Nothing beat feeling her muscles working in the morning, she thought to herself as she meandered down the hall. |

Falon peeked her head inside another room and sighed. Her massively poor sense of direction was again leading her in circles. She'd come to the Shea Manor looking for the head Housekeeper to enquire about a job and wound up lost. Willing the next door to be the one she was looking for she opened the door and peeked in again. And ended up hanging her head in disappointment, it was just the laundry room. Another dead end she thought with another sigh. Turning to continue down the hallway she wound up face to face with a floating pile of drapes. With a little “eep” she stumbled backwards, and tried to keep from falling on her ass. To no avail though she found up on her butt looking up at the pile of levitating laundry and a pair of slender legs sticking out the bottom. It looked like a pile of fabric had tried to swallow someone and Falon leaned over trying to get a visual of the rest of the person attached to the legs. “Hello,” she queried kind of crawling to the side and looking up at the thin young woman who didn't look strong enough to be carrying such a huge pile of drapes. “Uhmm, do you want some help carrying that?” The woman looked at her and shook her head but Falon was already rising to her feet and plucking a couple of the heavy drapes off the top of the pile. “Please let me help you and then maybe you can help me,” she pleaded. The woman nodded and motioned for her to follow her into the laundry room. The drapes were quiet dusty and Falon's eyes nearly watered with the effort not to sneeze. Dutifully following her Falon placed the curtains where she was told to and faced the stranger. Wiping her hands on the cleanest bit of the drapes she could see she hoped she hadn't gotten to dirty. It wouldn't make a good impression to show up for a housekeeping position covered in dust bunnies. Holding out her hand to shake she introduced herself. “My name is Falon-Rae, but everyone just calls me Falon. I came here looking for the Head Housekeeper to ask about a job but I got lost. Your the first person I've seen yet since I was let through the front and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I have a horrible sense of direction and I could probably wander lost all day if someone doesn't help me...” Suddenly she stopped, mouth gaping. “I'm babbling aren't I?” she asked sheepishly feeling an embarrassed blush rising right to her hairline. Damn her nervousness, she always wound up babbling like an idiot when she was anxious. Taking a deep breath and regaining her composure she tried again. “Can I start this again?” she asked. |

She figured it was just her luck when somebody squeaked and half-collided with her mound of drapes. A few fell off the sides and top of her pile and she turned herself to better peer around at whoever was on the other side. The face of a young woman about her age peered up at her from around the pile of dusty fabric with a curious hello. Kaelian smiled around the stack, eager to greet the newcomer, but the woman inquired about helping her. She quickly shook her head. “Oh, no. I’ve got it,” she said quietly, quickly. She was sure she’d memorized the faces of her staff by now, and she didn’t recognize the pretty Hearth Witch. Sensing her Purple Dusk Jewels, Kael was doubly certain. Whoever this was, she didn’t want to get in her way or bother her with dirty drapes. But the witch quickly got to her feet and started gathering up the few curtains that had fallen from her pile. “Please let me help you and then maybe you can help me,” she said. Apparently she really wanted help, Kaelian thought, if she was willing to carry around these nasty things to get it. Offering a hesitant smile Kaelian nodded and cocked her head to get her to follow along as she traveled down the hall into the laundry room. Unloading her pile on one of the large wooden tables Kaelian turned around to direct the witch to do the same, which she did. The stranger tried to wipe her hands off on one of the cleaner drapes, she noticed, to no apparent avail. Kaelian thought to offer the woman a hand to get her cleaned off for whatever she was about in the Manor but she stuck out her hand in greeting. “My name is Falon-Rae, but everyone just calls me Falon. I came here looking for the Head Housekeeper to ask about a job but I got lost. Your the first person I've seen yet since I was let through the front and I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I have a horrible sense of direction and I could probably wander lost all day if someone doesn't help me……I’m babbling aren't I?” Kaelian was a bit surprised but she shook the woman’s—Falon’s—hand and then waited patiently. When she realized she was rambling along, Falon blushed and Kaelian pinched her lips together to fight her smile for several reasons. She gave the woman a nod to her question, wondering what she would think when she found out the itty-bitty woman in front of her was the Head Housekeeper of the Manor here in Shalador. When Falon asked if she could start over Kaelian smiled and nodded. “Be my guest,” she said quietly. She waited patiently as Falon re-introduced herself and asked where she might find the Housekeeper. “Well, you happen to be in luck,” Kaelian said, her good mood from earlier boosted by this little run-in. “The Housekeeper is already up and about. I’ve already scrubbed the Hall floor and was just beginning a little drape-washing adventure.” She grabbed a clean towel off one of the shelves and handed it to her guest with a warm smile and a twinkle in her eyes. Kael could see the moment Falon got it and looked at her with wide eyes. “My name is Kaelian, the Housekeeper,” she said. “It is very nice to meet you, Falon,” she said walking over to the large washing basins to begin working on cleaning the drapes. Turning on the water and adding a little bit of soap, she turned around and leaned against the edge of the table. “So you’ve come looking for a job?” she asked her guest. She gave the woman’s still dusted outfit an approving look. Obviously she wasn’t afraid to get a bit messy, and she’d been eager and persistent enough to help. “Could you bring me some of those,” she asked politely as she turned back to shut off the hot water. |
