Jaidev was not near when the foolish female, his mate, stepped into a trap. He was close enough to come at Fali’s cries, but he could not release the steel jaws around her leg. His cubs, two girls and just old enough to run without falling, were too frantic and scared to do anything but run from the ‘hostile male’. He caught one of them, Gaile, gentle as he could be with the squirming cub in his jaws, before she could run off and get lost. The other, Hanni, fled beyond his reach. Jaidev hated the choice before him, but he could not help his mate on his own. He took the single cub back to the female’s circle for help. The females, of course, took Gaile. They mock attacked Jaidev to get her away from him, despite the fact that he had not harmed his daughter in the slightest. There was no discussion about saving Fali either. It was decided that nothing could be done. So Jaidev went back alone. It was too late for his mate by the time he reached her, but he was able to tell her that their daughters were safe. It was only half a lie, and told through the blood of the humans that had started to skin his mate alive before Jaidev could kill them. It eased her passage into the Darkness, and that was all he could do for the dainty female that he had loved so briefly. All that was left was to track down his other daughter, and pray to the Darkness that she was still alive. Following Hanni’s trail, his lips wrinkled back from his bloody teeth at the smell of the kitten’s blood on a sharp rock. The cub had slipped and fallen down a short slope, cut herself and kept going. The small splashes of red on the white of unbroken snow made her easy to track. The trail led straight to a stone and wooden den, like the ones the hunters came from. It stopped just outside with a larger splash of crimson soaking into ground scraped down to just the last layer of ice on the dead winter grasses. The baring of the earth was the sort of thing only humans did. Heart-sick, but needing to know, the silent predator peered through a window into the human den. At first, he couldn’t tell what he was seeing. Hanni was on her back and a human was holding her. There was fire, but it was small and contained. The hurt smells were fading and the human was making soft sounds. Then the cub started to purr, and Jaidev knew everything was going to be fine. He settled down to wait and watch, wanting to know who this human was, and why she was taking such care with the cub of another race. Surely she had to know what Arcerian cats could do to humans. Wrapped in a sight shield, he watched, sniffing to find out if the female had company to keep her safe. |

It was night and Raine was heading out of the house, her first steps took her towards the cemetery, but then she heard her stepbrother laughing and she knew that laugh. They were drunk and on their way home, she had to avoid them at all cost, so she ran the opposite direction and into the woods. She was running and hoping they had not noticed her, she was praying they would not follow her. Barefoot and in a white dress, she was light footed as she ran between the trees, after a while she came to a very small cottage type building, it seemed to be abandoned, at least it had the feel of no one having been there in a while. The door was open and Raine decided she would take a look inside, after all she was looking for a place of her own and even if this was not near a cemetery, she might be able to make it hers. First she had to see how livable it was and if it would require a lot of repairs, it was rather shabby looking but she thought with a little care she could make it a home, once she could move out of the house. With a start she jumped up as she heard something crashing through some bushes, she was ready to bolt and disappear when she heard a faint meowing. Curiously she moved towards the sound and found a small cat entangled in a bush. Its eyes looked at her in fright and Raine started to speak to it softly “It is alright little kitty, let me help you. I won’t hurt you, I promise little kitty. You are a very pretty little thing.” She cooed at the cat as she carefully untangled it from the bushes. She could smell the blood and cradled the little thing in her arms to soothe it, all the while she was talking to it “I know you are scared, I am scared a lot, so I know how it feels. Let me see what you got there. You will be fine and once I fix you up you can be off and running again.” Raine took the little kitten inside the building and started a small witch fire in order to see where the cat was hurt. "You got yourself in a mess here little kitty, but I think I can help you. It does not look too bad, but it sure bleeds a lot." Raine called in a few towels and then looked around for a pot or a bowl, some warm water to wash the wound would be nice, but she did not want to put the kitten down in order to dig through the small cupboard she had seen. For a moment she just stood there and thought how to go about cleaning the wound, binding it and not having the cat run off and hide from her. Edited by Raine Aucoin, Feb 15 2011, 03:02 PM.

Jaidev had to crouch to peer through the window, but with how dirty it was, he moved several times to get a good angle. Then he gave up and air walked to the door. His nose wrinkled with the smell of a pair of violent males that saturated the building, hunters that had been there no more than a day ago. The door was slightly ajar, so he could peer through the gap and watch the pale witchling with his kitten. She was so pale, he wondered if that was natural for a human. If she were a Arcerian Cat, she'd be almost as pretty as himself. With that thought on his mind, he crouched in the doorway, unaware that his tail was sweeping the snow away from the door yard. Watching her fumble around, he gave a cat-like smile, understanding that the pale human was trying to help little Hanni, but wasn't sure how. He himself wouldn't be able to heal the kit, and this way at least she was safe and warm. The cut didn't look bad, now that the kitten was being still and letting it clot up. A muffled conversation drew his attention after a few minutes. It didn't make sense to him, though it should have. They were talking about their partners in poaching and what had happened to the other pair a few hours earlier. The hunters were coming back. The sound of snarling would soon alert Raine that something was going on. The hunters did their best, but neither could match the 800 lbs of cat, much less his green jewel. Hopefully Raine would not be too alarmed at the sight of the two human blood being torn to pieces by invisible claws and teeth. The snarling adult male cat dropped the sight shield then, coughing a challenge to the evening air for any other poachers that might be around. He is an awesome sight, splattered with blood and gore, with his fur standing up along his back and tail. His lips pulled back from his teeth as he glared his blue-eyed gaze around to be sure the threat was done, leaving just limbs and other body parts cooling in the snow. Then, in typical cat fashion, he twists around and starts cleaning himself. |

As the kitten purred in her arms, Raine found herself smiling. It almost hurt her face, it was one of the rare occasions she felt happy and she enjoyed herself. The little thing felt warm in her arms and Raine was surprised it did not hurt, maybe because her back was still cold or maybe the warmth of an animal was different than the one from a human, it was definitely different form the one of a fire. In the middle of using her craft to levitate the bowl down and filling it with water, which she wanted to warm, she heard voices. This was not good, she was sure she was in trouble, listening closely she realized it was not anyone from her family and she relaxed briefly, but then she was looking for a place to hide. Her eyes went to the door which was still wide open and she saw the weirdest thing, her footprints were not leading into the house, they were gone. Absentmindedly she was scratching the kitten under its chin as her eyes darted about the small house, there was no way she could hide herself and the kitten good enough not to be found. She could throw a sigh shield up, but was not sure if she could include the kitten. Her training was seriously lacking some of the simple basics and she was afraid she might hurt the little cat in some way. A snarl made her jump, and she had almost dropped the kitten. Cooing softly at it, she was trying not to panic the little thing, though her heart was determined to jump out of her chest. With wide eyes she watched what was going on through the open door, thankfully some of the carnage was hidden from her sight when whatever was attacking the males moved about and out of the range she could clearly see. The kitten hugged tightly to her, Raine plopped to the ground on her rear as a huge cat appeared. Her eyes flickered form the kitten in her arms to the big cat all covered in blood and who knew what. Raine’s mind refused to acknowledge what exactly that cat was covered in, but Raine was thankful the cat had been there to help her out. Her forehead scrunched up as she was trying to figure this out, so she had the little cat and the big one sort of looked like it. Maybe the kitten had been hurt by these men, Raine got back to her feet and slowly approached the door. The kitten was wiggling in her arms now, as if trying to tell her it wanted down, Raine’s eyes kept going between the huge cat that was cleaning itself and the small one in her arms. “No, you can’t run around yet, I still got to do something about your paw.” She told the kitten and concentrated hard on closing the wound, she had often closed a cut or scratch on herself, even the occasional open welt from a whip she managed to heal. Slowly she was walking closer to the door, that big cat fascinated her. She did not even see the gore around it, she just wanted to look at it closer. “Hello.” She told the cat before she stepped out of the door, it was always good to be polite and Raine definitely was a very polite little witch. |

Jaidev paused in his cleaning when Raine came to the door. He had vanished the larger pieces of the remains, but there is still blood all over. A quick roll in the snow had taken care of most of the visible spots on his back and sides, but his forepaws and face were still crimson for the moment. His big blue eyes turned solemnly towards the human witch, then he called in the weapons the hunters had been carrying. His own Green Jewel hung on a silver chain around his neck, almost hidden under his fur, but it glowed faintly when he put one paw on the stack of human claws and pushed. The weapons broke, then he pushed them towards Raine. Most humans had a hard time understanding Kindred at first, and Jaidev had no practice in making himself heard either. So he thought it would be better to show her that danger she had been in before he fumbled at trying to use a mental thread to contact her. The sentiment was simple, *Stupid meat bad males.* with a current of protective anger laced through it. It would be a miracle if Raine managed to understand. |

Raine was not really scared, yet, she was just wondering what that big cat was doing there and why it had killed those people. Much more confusing, however, was why that cat was just sitting there and cleaning itself with so much care and did not seem to be taking much note of her. There was definitely a fascination that was drawing Raine closer to the animal, Raine had been scared a lot in her rather short life, but this was not one of those times. Somehow she had a feeling that this cat would not hurt her, even though she could clearly see that it was capable of carnage, still Raine could not shake the idea that it had been for a motive. Did animals have reasoning after all? She had heard about the so called Kindred, in her house they were treated as if they were a myth. The Priestess had always told her that it was utter nonsense to even think that animals could be Blood, wear jewels and use craft; but even with what had been put aside as completely unbelievable, Raine had often dreamed of what it would be like if animals could really be the way she had heard from others. Having never met any, it had not dampened her hopes to one day see one and maybe even talk to one. Could they talk? She was sure that they most likely were able to send a psychic thread, if they could use craft, then that could be possible. One day she should really sneak to the local library on one of her shopping trips and see if she could find books about Kindred. The kitten in her arms was wiggling and straining to get free of her embrace, so Raine decided to carefully set it down. Hopefully the tear in its paw would stay closed when it put weight on it, Raine had closed it and bound it with a strip of her dress as she had been walking towards the door. It had been such an automatic thing, she would later wonder why there was a piece of her dress missing, again. Her dress seemed to be the logic choice for her to bind her own scrapes and scratches at times, and not only the ones she managed to get on her own, but the ones her mother, sorry the Priestess and step brother Charles would adorn her with when they were angry at her, or someone else. When the cat made weapons appear, broke them and then pushed them towards her. Raine’s legs wobbled and she sat hard on her rear when they buckled. Not sure why she had never included BIG cats in her view of Kindred, Raine hugged her knees and rocked back and forth, thinking hard. Something dark was trying to reach her and she naturally recoiled, knowing her White was no match for whatever this cat was wearing. Sounds brushed against her, she could not make them out, but they were no growls or snarls. Raine blinked at the cat, still sitting she reached a hand out to it. She had seen something glow just before the sounds, she was sure of it and it was around that huge cat’s neck. Raine was not quite sure if she should be happy or scared, it seemed she had finally met a Kindred. Part of her wanted to run to the Priestess and tell her she was wrong, as she was about so many things, but Raine would never do that. Not only was she too scared to stand up to that woman who was her mother, she wanted to keep this her own little, or in case if this cat a rather big, secret. “Hello, I am Raine.” She told the cat. |
