Kitrina Wells

Kitrina Silvian Wells
Age: 201 (20)
Caste: Healer
Race: 1/2 Eyrien, 1/2 Sceltic
Birth Territory: Askavi, Kaleer
Home Territory: Glacia, Kaleeer
Birthright Jewel: Summer Sky (rolled by SRawr)
Jewel of rank: (not acquired yet)

Craft Strengths: Craft Strengths: Kitty is fantastic at two things. She can shield just about anything, and her coach driving skills are well honed. She doesn't really push to find her limits in these things, since failure at such would be catastrophic.

Craft Weaknesses: Kitty can heal only things like scratches or bruises. Anything more than accidental scrapes is more than she can handle, not because she lacks the talent, but because of a mental block that keeps her from it.

Description
Physical Description: Kitty has long red hair. It has a natural wave to it and nice volume. Which she tends to crush down into a braid or pigtails. Mostly she doesn't care about it, as long as it is out of her way. It never occurs to her to just get it cut off entirely, which would be a horrible waste. If let loose, her hair would be beautiful, like a sea of fire hanging to her hips.

Her eyes are somewhere between gold and green, with gorgeous eye lashes that make them seem larger and darker. With the way her eyes sparkle with good fun and adventure most of the time, they are very striking and memorable. Some of the passengers in her coach, usually male, have done their best to make her laugh and smile at them, just so they could look into her eyes, so full of laughter and fun.

Kitty often thanks the Darkness that her jewels are not darker. With just summer-sky, she already finds it inconvenient to eat enough to fuel her body. Which means that she is lean and lacking the curves she would have if she could manage to put on some weight. She often thinks she is built like a boy, though no boy ever had the subtle curve of the hips that Kitty has, or the high, perky chest that she tries to keep hidden.

With her work, she prefers to wear pants and men's shirts that are too big for her, with a tank-top underneath for support and modesty. She avoids staying in the sun when she can, because when she tans, she looks more like her father than she cares to, not to mention that sunlight would roughen her skin, as many a snobby lady has told her.

The shirts also help hide her tiny wings, over-sized enough to hide them in folds, or cushion the back of a coat or jacket so they don't poke out too much. The wings never grew more than two foot long, and were twisted up due to a birth defect.

Personality:On the surface, Kitrina is very easy to understand. To most people, she doesn't mind seeming like a girl that is in the mood for adventure. Pretending to be bright and cheerful, she wears a grin most of the time. The challenges that she knows she can defeat, of which there are many, thrill and delight her.

This demeanor is a fragile crust. When pushed too far, or under certain circumstances, she goes from happy and playful to panicked and hiding. Then again, most people wouldn't think of pushing her buttons. Why should they? She is just a little witch with light jewels, providing a useful service that keeps them from having to drive the Coaches themselves. They have no idea that she spends a few of her nights sitting up, afraid to sleep for fear of finding out that her life of freedom was nothing more than a dream.

The recent death of her mentor has ripped a hole in Kitrina's sense of well-being. She has been more fragile recently, and more prone to drinking when off duty. Her fondness for such things as horse racing has reached a possibly self-destructive peak. Often she could be found in the wood-working area of the Coach garage in the residence left to her, creating furniture and sometimes even sculptures to reflect the torment in her heart.

Robert's final instructions in his letter also cause her some uncertainty. It was kind of the old man to look after his protege` like that, but trying to connect her to a court, any court that might want her, seemed to be a gentle way of telling her two things. First, she could not be trusted to stand on her own, and second, that he thought he had to search everywhere to find any position at all for her. Rationally she knew it was just the opposite, that he wanted to keep her options open and thought she might want stability, but her heart was still used to being hurt.

Likes:
+ Kitty's likes are mostly to do with scents and memories. First on her list is the smell of freshly waxed furniture in the summertime, which is associated with a clean household, and the training in coach driving.
+ Despite the bad memories associated with Askavi, she still loves the smell of a snow covered morning, so fresh and new it seems sharp enough to cut.
+ Pipe smoke is always comforting, from how her mentor always used to smoke in the evenings, while they relaxed at home.
+ Roses and blackberries remind her of the summers she has spent in Scelt, running wild in the fields with or without horses.
+ Like most young girls, she has a soft spot for horses. And dogs. And most things that are cuddly and furry. She even likes rats, as long as they are pets and not vermin.

Dislikes:
- Kitty can't help but flinch every time she hears a male voice raised in anger, since it reminds her of Jalavar's unpredictable temper.
- Breaking a dish will make her cry every time, though she has gotten better about not making a fuss over it.
- Cold water. Water should be hot in order to clean anything, and if it isn't being used to clean, one should not touch it. There are always better things to drink.
- Being confronted with her limitations also has a strong effect on Kitrina, especially when it has to do with Healing. Part of her knows that she should be able to do it, but her terror of punishment always makes her freeze up or run.
- She has nightmares of getting lost, though she doesn't really recall the exact circumstances of why it holds such fear for her.

History
A long time ago, there was a Sceltic Healer and a Eyrien warrior. They never married despite being very close to each other. He trusted her with his life, time and time again. As she trusted him to protect her in the same measure. Neither of their families could stomach a formal union. Her's because of a distant relation to a ruling Queen. His because his entire race was sure that they were superior to any land bound creature.

Still the pair remained together, discrete about their passion for each other. When the Healer grew round with child, she followed her lover to his homeland, so they could enjoy their child together in relative peace. The babe was born with tiny, twisted wings. They would never grow to more than a nuisance, and Jalavar took their presence as a personal insult.

Kitrina can barely remember her mother. Ophelia was a gentle sort and was eventually driven away from Askavi when she was an old woman. Kitrina was still young at the time since she ages so much more slowly than the short-lived races. Though she understood why, it still hurt to have her mother taken away, especially so soon after Kitty found that her own strength and skills were so similar to Ophelia's.

Jalavar mostly raised Kitrina after her birthright ceremony, which was when Ophelia had to depart, though paternity was never formally acknowledged. The ceremony had been poorly attended, just the Priestess, Ophelia and Jalavar, but the Eyrien male would have been deeply offended if Kitty had been called his in front of even that tiny group.

He made sure Kitrina had food, clothes, and a roof over her head, but demanded that she care of his house, and did all the cooking and cleaning. He supposed that if he kept her out of sight, he would not be ridiculed so much for the presence of the obvious halfbreed.

When Kitty asked to begin training as a healer, Jalavar beat her senseless, though even he couldn't explain why it infuriated him so. Later he rationalized it by claiming that it was for her own good. Since the only people around to teach her were Eyriens, and they would have treated her like scum for being a halfbreed, it was better to beat the urge to learn such a craft out of her before she could bring dishonor on his name.

Kitrina never understood that she could have stopped him at any time through the years of abuse. Her jewels were just dark enough, and he did not begin until after her birthright ceremony. Instead, she bowed to his anger and never stopped his 'discipline' without realizing how it was maiming her spirit. It wasn't until after her virgin night that anyone realized what was going on. Though the boy was also Eyrien, he had not treated her like she was less, and was outraged at the scars on the young woman's limbs. The young male that had offered to help her through the ordeal ended up challenging Jalavar to ritual combat.

Rather than stay and see the outcome, Kitty fled. There was some idea that if she wasn't there, they might not fight. So she hurried to the Coach station with the money she had been saving for years out of the household expenses.

Robert Marshal was the Coach driver. He was old and well versed in the trade, with a quiet disposition and a fondness for pipe smoking. He rescued Kitty that night, though there was no foolish heroics in bundling a teenage girl into his Coach and heading for Scelt. His wife had died years before, and he found that having the girl around was a blessing in his old age. He had no children of his own, and Robert soon saw Kitty as the daughter that his wife had always wanted.

He healed much of the damage done to her spirit by Jalavar, just by being calm and forgiving. By the time he retired, Kitrina had learned how to drive his Coach, as well as build new ones, if needed, even down to the furniture inside. While Marshal was alive, it was a profitable side-business for them because of Kitrina's budding sense of decor and art. Kitrina even learned the art of conversation, since some people wanted to be amused for the ride. She soon found that she liked people. Most people were not like Jalavar claimed, but were generally accepting and nice.

She took up the business reluctantly, but bowed to the old man's expressed wishes of wanting some time to himself. Kitty visited as often as she was in Scelt, and Robert hid his steady decline from her.

Recently, she went back to his house and found it locked and dark. A letter in a secret hiding place in the kitchen told Kit that Robert Marshal, the wealthy old businessman and uncle to a Province Queen in the territory, had left her everything he owned, as well as the references she would need to serve any court, pretty much anywhere in Kaleer, if she decided she wanted more steady work.

For now, she isn't sure what she wants. The house in Scelt is too full of grief for Kitty to stay there. The money she and Marshal put aside could enable her to move pretty much anywhere she wanted to, but to give up working was not in her. Besides, with her life stretching out in front of her, she couldn't afford to just rest on what she had already earned.

It was time for a vacation, Kitty decided after seeing the last batch of aristos off her coach. The little boy looked back and grinned, so Kitrina grinned at him too and gave a big wave at him. The antics earned a haughty look from the teenage girl, who stuck her tongue out at Kitty and her Coach. The light-jeweled coach driver had to laugh at the expression, which seemed to offend the girl even more. Oh well. They'd be old and dead before Kitty ever felt the urge to settle down.

The Coach itself was one of her finest. The wood had been burnished to almost glow with the care given to it. The upholstery was as fine as the furniture in any aristo salon, in rich wine tones. A tea rose bush grew on a high shelf in the passenger cabin, near the sky light, and the tiny blooms filled the air with their scent. The addition of a plant had proven to be an excellent idea, since people tended to start to make smells after being cooped up for a while, and the rose seemed to combat the issue admirably.

In the back was a compartment with stalls for two horses, which was a convenience that many people paid extra for. The stalls were not as pretty as the rest of the Coach, but they still were well cared for. No passage ever saw the tiny compartment that was Kitty's own quarters. It was barely the size of a closet, but it suited her needs well enough. That just left the driver's area, which is where Kitrina returned to after seeing her charges safely off, and her pocket filled with the other half of the agreed sum.

With her head full of plans and her pockets full of money, Kitrina turned her Coach towards home. The Island of Scelt, which had been the birthplace of her mother, was also the home to her mentor and guardian: Robert Marshal. Kitty grinned to think of how she would surprise him with his favorite pipe weed, and a bottle of fine old liquor that she knew he liked. She also considered taking her horses out for a romp, if they were in the mood for it after being cared for by grooms for a month or so. They were a matched pair of bays, and she was somewhat planning on breeding them eventually.

As usual, it did not occur to her to look up the Wells family. They hadn't wanted her a hundred years ago, so surely they still didn't want her now. Her driving was second nature to her by then, so she hardly needed to focus, just choosing the proper winds to take her 'home' by instinct, so her mind was free to consider and dream.

Possibilities that never came to her thoughts had already started to unfurl though. The house that Marshal lived in, and Kitty stayed in while in town, was dark as she parked the coach. That was unusual, but not cause for alarm by itself. Maybe Robert had gone to bed early.

Her heart stopped a beat when she tried the front door and found it locked. Marshal never locked it. When she unlocked the door and went inside, the psychic impressions of sorrow broke over Kitty like a wave on a sand castle, with much the same effect.
