Credit to the ground staff for producing a surface that drank up more liquid than was consumed in Clitheroe last night and still allowed the ball to roll true. Special thanks to both teams for serving up a wholehearted affair in horrendous conditions and whilst it was a sickener to see the pinpoint shot arch into the corner of the goal, it could have gone either way. On to Radcliffe, if their pitch survived.

Every credit to both teams on giving us an absorbing game in truly awful monsoon like conditions where just staying on your feet looked difficult enough and made good quality flowing football very difficult. I thought a draw would have been a fair result, the lads defended very well throughout although their keeper seemed to have safer hands than ours at times. Second half we just didn't complete enough passes, too many final balls went astray and the link up play between the top 6 wasn't up to par therefore their keeper had a quiet afternoon but as I say, you have to allow for dreadful conditions. Heads up and go again lads.

Not one for the purists. A real old fashion slog making passing very difficult. Be some very tired lads tonight.

I thought Lancaster shaded it and probably deserved the three points, but having said that our back four played well today and looked the best I've seen them all season, especially Bonaminio who was excellent and gets my vote for man of the match. I understand how difficult it must have been playing in those conditions, but we played far too many aimless long balls and far too many passes went astray, especially in the second half. Does anyone else understand why we leave three players up when the opposition have a corner, I could understand it if we were losing with only a few minutes to go. Surely Sefton should be brought back to defend at corners because of his height and presence in the box.

I too thought both sets of players were a credit to their clubs for serving up such a decent game in appalling conditions which was only ever going to be won by a single goal. It's amazing how the fitness levels have improved over the years.

We really do now seem to finally have a good looking back 4 who played the conditions well for most of the game.

We did struggle at times getting the ball up field in the second half but the wind made accurate long ball passing almost impossible. The only comment I'd make is that when Simon moved forward with the ball there didn't seem anyone around to accept a short pass.

However many players you leave up when the opposition have a corner, it's likely that the other team will leave the same number plus one back to mark them. I don't know how you best interpret that - either you have more chance to break and score the more you leave up, or you have a better chance of defending corners with fewer players in the box.

Just an observation, not saying who's right or wrong, but Burnley under Sean Dyche have all eleven back in the box to defend a corner. A lot of fans don't like it because, if it gets cleared, then it's inevitably picked up by one of the opposition and comes straight back into the box. Dyche does appear to know the time of day though, so who's to say he's wrong.

I can also remember a few games under Paul Moore when we left two wingers up, one out on each wing on the halfway line, when defending a corner. That was bizarre, never seen anyone else do that.

Lots of Premier league teams bring all 10 outfield players back when they concede a corner. The theory is that the more defenders they have in the box the more difficult it is for the opposition to score. When our opponents have a corner they generally send their two centre backs forward so we should have Sefton, who is probably our strongest player we have in the air, back to defend. Most teams only leave one player forward and it's generally a smaller player with a bit of pace.

When Tommy Lawson was manager he pulled everyone back to defend corners and when asked why he said it was so everyone was facing the same way when you cleared the corner and got on the attack again. There's no right or wrong way to defend corners, its up to the managers to decide how they want their teams to do it at any point in the game depending on the circumstances. Teams won't want to risk being caught on the counter-attack and you'll nearly always see them pull an extra man back to outnumber the attackers left up.

I remember once when playing up front to 'F*** Off' out of the box when we were defending a corner. Probably more to do with the fact that I had no marking ability or physical presence than possessing any 'mobility' or 'dribbling' skills.

Like a lot of things, tactics will depend on a mixture of the skills that you possess in your team and the threats posed by the opposition. I've never subscribed to the theory of flooding the box with defenders or attackers.
