As a cosplayer who's worked with electronics before, you'll probably want to go for one of the larger gun batteries, so you have room to house enough batteries to power the light. I built a light-up "fireball" a few years back for my Lina Inverse costume, and it took two 9-volt batteries to power it. Even then, they didn't last all that long. As for putting a solar cell as a backup power source, that's probably not a very feasible method. A solar panel the size of which you could build into the gun without disrupting the design would not likely provide enough power for the light. And on the subject of lights, you'll want to use LEDs rather than a traditional incandescent light bulb. They're smaller, generally brighter, and won't put out nearly as much heat. Lights for model trains are also useful, but probably not for something like this. Also, some people have suggested waterguns or a flashlight as the base for it- I would actually suggest an airsoft pistol as a base for it. You can build the shell around the main body, put the LED in the muzzle of the weapon, a reflector dish thingie to focus and amplify the light, and you could grind out and dismantle the spring-loader in the ammo clip in the gun's grip and turn that into your battery casing. If you're using wood, it's a toss-up as to how much easier it is to work with than metal. Balsa wood would likely work well (available at most hobby supply stores), and you can work it with just a hobby knife and a bit of sandpaper. On the other hand though, it's not the cheapest material, and it can dent easily if you're careless with it. It's probably also the easiest wood to get good, smooth curves on, like I did for these claws for a Gundam costume. Another good choice is basswood- much harder than balsa, and relatively durable. It's still not cheap however, and you will need a saw of some kind to cut it, and either sandpaper and a LOT of patience, or a good dremel kit to get curves out of it. Thin metal sheeting would probably look absolutely AWESOME, but the trouble then is cutting it, shaping it, and then welding it smoothly. It's probably prohibitively expensive to pay a professional to do it for you, and it's similarly difficult, expensive, and even dangerous to do yourself without proper training. (Believe me, welding for costume stuff is not easy or precise! I still have a burn scar from that.) Other than all that rambling, my advice is to cut mock-ups of your patterns using tagboard or foamboard first, and see how well the patterns actually work. The benefit of course is that if you need to adjust the patterns, the tagboard mockup can be adjusted to create them, and if they DON'T work, you don't waste expensive materials. I only just now found this thread, otherwise I'd've commented sooner =D I've been doing cosplay for 7 years now, so I'm happy to share whatever knowledge and ideas I can!

Uh...This is too much suggestion for me to absorb, I'm gonna take a really long break my head hurts a lot from thinkning about this, also I'm just gonna start the building right away, @Firefury yer idea are good for my sword, I think yer techniques best suited for making my sword, thanks. @Ina, about the transformer, what fun would it be if it could transform by itself, it's just ruins the fun of playing with it. Seriously I need a break I'm exhuasted from this, I'll be away for a while to recover from this head ache. |

Whoops ^^; Sorry. And I recommend against using balsa wood for swords, personally. To easy to snap the blade by accident. |
