I just got my copy, and it's pretty great. And given how saddeningly easy Mario games have been in recent years, the game actually presents quite a challenge. Mario 64's lenient 8 points of health has been reduced to 3, so expect a lot of deaths. Instead of 7 stars per level, you've only got 4-5, and a bunch of levels with just 1. That adds up to a lot of huuuuge levels. Plenty of classic throwbacks in the game too. You'll notice a lot of remixed music from older Mario games, and the Bowser lairs especially are just like Mario 64's fantastic level design. Bowser's been retooled to bring back his badassery he had in the past. I love how he just roars at you and subtitles show what he's saying. And his airships from SMB 3 are back! The only problem is that the controls take some getting used to, especially when you try to get Mario to run in the right direction with the screwy camera angles on round planets and anywhere else the gravity is screwy. Also, getting 120 stars unlocks Luigi. He jumps higher and has worse traction, making the game harder since things are designed around Mario's controls. You can then play through the game with the added replay value of a harder quest. And I'm skeptical of this last note, but supposedly getting all 120 stars with Luigi opens up a level with a 121st star. |

Just kicked Bowser's ass for the third time and I'm watching the ending sequence. All I can say is that the final boss fight was EPIC. Too easy though. They should've had you hit him 9 times instead of 6. EDIT: Got 120 stars, go me! Now to do it again as Luigi... FURTHER EDIT: Bwahaha, the mission where you rescue Luigi in Super Luigi Galaxy is so funny. "Are you me? Well, I guess there's enough people in the universe for one person to look like me... Anyway, I found a Power Star! Let's take it back!" What's even more bizarre is that the NPC Luigi and the Luigi you play as look different somewhat. Why didn't they use the same skeleton/polygon map/texture? |
