I had to read Romeo and Juliet for my english honors class. Too much people died in there! T.T

Right now, I'm reading Night by Elie Wiesel. It's about the Holocause and Elie's journey in a concentration camp. The first few pages are already sad.

Ah, I read "Night" too! My aunt encouraged me to read it after she finished and so she let me borrow her copy. It was really sad and it gets worse when he describes living in the concentration camps with his father.

I'm currently reading "Obasan" by Joy Kogawa, which tells the story of the forced internment of the Japanese-Canadians during WWII (similar internment occurred in the U.S.) I borrowed it from my friend, who had to read it for one of her courses. I was curious because my grandparents and aunt were one of many who were interned (although my aunt was so young she hardly remembers it). While it was not as bad as the Holocuast, this book is very touching and sad.

Books
1. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason
The book is hilarious but I think the protagonist drinks too much alcohol, smokes too much, curses too much and is too focused on men ^^;;
2. Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod (also hilarious XDD)

Manga
Finished the manga "Good Morning Call" ~ so sweet!
Read Corda chapter 49 ~ Interesting, interesting developments
Read xxxHolic up to chapter 161

D: Where are you reading the Corda manga? I can never find any scanlations past volume 7, I think, and Viz (the company distributing the English version) is slow, as usual >_>

And yay, Vivi's reading xxxHOLiC!! It's currently my favourite series and I'm planning on creating a fansite for it too. That's how obsessed I am with it. I recently got my hands on the English version of volume 12 and it's where the story starts to get confusing (and good!) in typical CLAMP fashion <3

I'm currently reading a novel called "The Book of Air and Shadows" by Michael Gruber. Haven't gotten too far yet but one of the nurses at the nursing home I work at has read it and he's very excited that I'm reading it too XD He says it's very good so I hope I get into the good parts soon (because the first chapter or so was terribly confusing...)

@Kotoko: I am not reading scanlations, just the chinese scans ^^ Sometimes they post links to chinese scans on LJ so I can always take a look at them. I can only read a little of Chinese, but it's sometimes enough for me to understand XD

I think I'll follow Vivi-san's format... ^^" *bricked*

Books:
- The Iliad
- The Shadow Rising

Started on these a while ago, but never bothered to finish. D:

Manga:
- Recently finished reading both Count Cain and Count Cain: Godchild. I love the allusions to fairy tales and nursery rhymes. :D
- Currently caught up to D.Gray-Man ((Why must Mugen have a new design?! I spent so much time working with the old design too D:))

Right now I am reading "Phantom" by Susan Kay, and am trying to savor it. I have about a hundred more pages to go and I don't want the book to finish.

The book is supposed to be the story before the Phantom of the Opera (Erik for those of you who did not know his name) got to the opera. It goes through his childhood and the different stages of his life. It may sound like it would suck, but it really is a great book!!!! XD

Books:
~ Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, which I just recently since it was a required reading for one of my classes. The book looks into the culture of the African Igbo tribe and its ultimate decline through the eyes of one its strongest men, Okonkwo. It's a pretty interesting story -- each page is filled with detailed descriptions of the Igbo's way of living, and there are so many underlying themes told subtly in the narrative.

~ Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things. The story revolves on twins, a broken family and forbidden love. I haven't really gotten too far to get a good grasp of things, but it's turning out to be interesting.

Manga:
~ Nurarihyon no Mago. A fairly new shounen series in Weekly Shounen Jump whose protagonist is part human and a quarter youkai. It's full of youkai politics, power struggles and of course, classic shounen fights.

@penchan;;

Gah, what a coincidence.XDDD We took up TFA in our English class just recently!8D

Umm, I haven't been able to buy any new books lately, but this is what I'm (re)reading now:

Tam Lin by Pamela Dean
This was published back in the early 1990s or late 1980s, so I'm not sure if they have it in every bookstore. It's a modern retelling of the traditional ballad of Tam Lin, who was an earthly knight in the service of the Faerie Queen. Basically, Tam Lin was to be offered as the Faeries' tithe to hell, but was saved by his lover Janet. In Pamela Dean's book, Tam Lin is renamed Thomas Lane, Janet is Janet Carter, and the setting is moved to a small college. This book is one of my favorites, since it's peppered with little jokes about classic literature (half of which I don't understand, since I haven't read Pope or Milton or Keats yet xDD), and also because I think Tam Lin is one of the best fairy tale princes knights ever. Its pacing is a little hard to get used to, though, which is why I have to reread it so much.XD

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett
This is another favorite of mine.XD Basically, it's an Apocalypse narrative, but the weirdest and most insane version there ever was. The final line at the blurb on the back is "[words I forgot], and someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist." I'm a fan of Gaiman's and fantasy in general, so the fact that there was a demon "Who Did Not So Much as Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards", a bibliophile-slash-angel, a fail pair of Witchfinders, Anathema Device (Professional Descendant), and the Four Apocalyptic Motorbike Riders, was enough to get me hooked.8D Awesome book.XD

@Liu: How did you find it? I was pretty miffed that my favorite character died so early. >_>

And Good Omens! *-* It's one of the most EPIC books I've read. The narrative's just too hilarious and the characters are all so quirky and amazing. I should read it again. :3

I KNOW. I hated Okonkwo for what he did that time; I mean, if you like him as a son so much, then don't kill him so easily! That part for me was the worst.D:

TFA was written really well. I loved those descriptions of tribal life.XD It's just that I dislike the main character so strongly.>w>"

Good Omens is made of LOVE. I adored how dysfunctional everyone was, and how no one ever fit the stereotype.XD Hilarious.

Oooh, I've read Tam Lin, and we're reading Romeo and Juliet in my English class... and later Things Fall Apart. And also Animal Farm (which I read a couple years ago -- but it's still very good!).

Currently, I'm slooooowly working my way through Utilitarianism by John Stuart Mill, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, and The Brothers Karamazov. But I'm really more interested in writing my novel, practicing piano, and getting homework done. Not a lot of time for reading! XD.

@Ava
Those wound like heavy books oO;; LOL I didn't know a thing about utilitarianism until I was in my senior year of high school xD

---------------------------------------------------------------

Currently, there's not too much time to read but at my bedside is A Nurse's Story by Tilda Shalof - an excellent read, both heartbreaking and funny, and best of all, it's realistic and honest. I also have Firebirds Soaring, which is a YA science fiction/fantasy anthology. I haven't really had a chance to read more than three stories in it yet, but...I'm working on it >.>

Nah, utilitarianism is only around... er... 70ish pages. I have the entire Lord of the Rings in a big book, though, that I have yet to conquer. XD.

Biggest book I've ever read was 1500 pages (The Count of Monte Cristo), and it still stands as one of my favorites. :D I can get through it in maybe three days, if I try. Hahahah.

The Master and Margarita isn't very fat, and neither is The Brothers Karamazov. The funky Russian names are a little hard to read though. XP. And there are so many nicknames/variations! Alexei becomes Alyosha, etc.! It's a bit mind-boggling.

But awesome. Russian writers ftw.
