Name, Age: Kotoko, 19 Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: My main instrument is the piano, which I’ve known how to play for 13 years (12 years of piano lessons and one year since I finished). I also learned the clarinet 5 years ago but stopped after 3.5 years of playing (it was only a high school band thing, really), so I’ve forgotten a lot of what I learned. Character you apply for: Fuyuumi Shouko How often will you be able to role-play?: Probably every day unless something terrible happens :x Picture of character (optional for original character): ![]() Character Description (biography, behaviour, relationships...): (Just a note…Not much is really revealed about Shouko in the anime so some of this info is just stuff I’ve assumed based on what I know ^^ I hope that’s all right. I don’t think my assumptions will throw off her character or anything, as they’re quite small details.) Although a first year, Shouko is regarded as one of the top clarinettists at Seiso Gakuen. Even so, Shouko is incredibly modest and rather meek, always avoiding the spotlight and never drawing attention to herself. When the spotlight does shine onto her, she gets easily nervous and intimidated to the point where she can barely speak. She is also most intimidated when speaking with guys. Consequently, her performance on-stage is negatively affected by her stage fright and nervousness, usually resulting in her performance becoming “stiff”. Nevertheless, Shouko is quite kind and considerate, as well as mature and polite, despite her young age. She comes from a wealthy family that enjoys the fine arts – her father even holds a vast collection of Western and Eastern art, a good portion of it on display at their family vacation house. She was encouraged to learn something related to the arts as a small child, so she began lessons to learn the clarinet and grew to love music. Although she is quiet and shy, the concours at Seiso helped her gain some confidence in herself, especially thanks to a certain Hino Kahoko. Ever since Kahoko defended her against the infamous Yunoki Guard, Shouko has always held Kahoko in high respects, admiring her fierce determination and courage – traits that Shouko severely lacks. In short, Kahoko is her idol. Shouko is also close to the school journalist, Amou Nami. Although their personalities are starkly different, Nami is also open and outgoing and she always treats Shouko with respect and kindness, never allowing the young clarinettist to fade into the background but including her in conversations and social events, such as sleepovers. As a result, Shouko responds with equal respect and kindness and feels grateful to be included in such a circle of friends. Your goals? (what do you plan with your character?) Well, even though Shouko gained a bit of confidence during the anime, I still want her to continue to develop and grow – to become less awkward and shy, basically, especially around the guys. Really, she’s surrounded by great guys yet she hardly even talks to them. I’d like to develop her relationship with the others more, but still keep her strong friendship going with Kaho and Nami. Short sample RP (~10 lines): “Can anyone identify the problem within this bar?” Shouko watched as their teacher, Iwai-sensei, gestured to a bar of music consisting of four consecutive chords he had neatly written on the pre-drawn lines on the blackboard. The class was silent save for some shuffling of feet or tapping of pencils. Shouko’s trained eye scanned the chords, analyzing the progression from one to the next. There it was – disguised neatly by the four voices* and thus difficult to catch, but it was there, nonetheless. She glanced around nervously, wondering if anyone else had caught it yet, but half the class wasn’t even paying proper attention to Iwai-sensei’s lesson and the other half still looked puzzled. Even her friend beside her, Mayumi-chan, was still analyzing the chords. Shouko fiddled with her pencil for a moment, wondering what she should do. Finally, her mouth set into a determined line, she raised a trembling hand into the air. Iwai-sensei was quick to notice her hand in the sea of silent and still students, and said, “Ah, yes, Fuyuumi-san?” Shouko’s eyes widened with shock and she immediately withdrew her hand so that her fingertips covered her lips, which were firmly shut tight, as if they didn’t want to open. She even felt her cheeks begin to fill with warmth. She just knew her face was turning bright red with embarrassment, which only caused her to become even more self-conscious. She could feel every eye in the room trained onto her. After biting her lip for a moment, Shouko nervously lowered her hand enough to allow her lips to move. “Ahh…The problem…um…I mean…” Shouko stammered. She paused, took a deep breath, and continued, “The problem with the chords is…is that there’s a parallel fifth g-going from the second to the th-third chord.” Iwai-sensei nodded with a genuine smile of satisfaction, hoping to be encouraging. Beside her, Mayumi grinned and whispered, “Way to go, Shouko-chan!” Then, holding out the stub of chalk towards her, Iwai-sensei said, “Excellent! Now, Fuyuumi-san, why don’t you come up to the board and change the chords so that the parallel fifth is eliminated?” If Shouko was nervous before, it was nothing compared to what she experienced next. Her face hot and bright red, Shouko nearly fainted on the spot. Why, oh why, had she raised her hand? --------------------------------------------------- * In case anyone gets confused by this, the “four voices” I’m referring to are soprano, contralto (alto), tenor, and bass. |
