Hyuga Katsuo (male, piano, 16 years old) Always grinning and joking - but actually very serious. Determined to win the competition in order to surpass his older brother, a famous musician. Ueno Gakuen's prodigy. In the same grade as Kobayashi Hanako. Other relationships: Takemoto Kazuha (Toho Gakuen). They attended the same middle school and tolerate each other, as they have done a duet together in one of the competitions that they were in several years back. At the moment, they're nothing more than just acquaintances. Name, Age: Vivi Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: Piano, 6 years How often will you be able to role-play?: at least once a week Character Name: Hyuga Katsuo Which school does your character attend (see above)?: Ueno Gakuen Instrument your character plays: Piano Character Description - Please keep in mind that you are allowed to add as much detail as you want to your character Physical appearance Name in Kanji: 日向 勝雄 Meaning: victorious child Height: 1,78m tall (= 5’84) Class: 2-A Addicted to: Studying, practising and coffee Looks: Katsuo has dark-brown, middle-length hair which he always combs to the left – thus, his left eye is often partially covered by strands. He is always seen with blue-rimmed glasses and loves wearing light-blue chemises combined with an ochre waistcoat. His school uniform is dark-green, with white stripes golden knobs. The school uniform vest is grey. Character traits Most of time, Hyuga Katsuo is always seen with a mischievous grin on his face. He never seems to take things too serious, tells jokes whenever he has the opportunity to and loves to tease others. At first sight, there's nothing special about him, just another average boy, humorous and with a comparatively small circle of friends. But there's actually more to it than meets the eye. (like always, lol) Depending on situation, Katsuo can be quite tactless and mean at times. He knows when to say "no" and is not afraid to do so. People have often asked him to play the piano to them and not seldom was their request rejected. However, the worst mistake you could make was to ask him about his family or compliment his brother. You will soon find out that he will either repulse you with an icy aloofness or chase you off by making snide remarks. Katsuo is also young man with many ethical values and very conservative. He takes them very seriously and absolutely dislikes any kind of cheaters, liars etc. For instance: A classmate once asked him during a test (the teacher wasn’t paying any attention) what the right answer was. The pianist’s reply was the following: "You know, it is not very tragic when you do not know an answer. But I do find it shocking that you even don’t possess enough common sense to tell right from wrong." He also tends to be a very reflective boy with a very contradictory personality and no one, absolutely no one, knows what he is really thinking. In certain aspects he is a special sort of loner; he is generally known as a very companionable fellow in his neighbourhood, however, his real nature seems to be completely different – this explains why he always avoids too close relationships. Biography Hyuga Katsuo lives with his grandparents and doesn't often talk about his family. He lives separated from his father and brother, though it doesn't really depress him much. The Hyuga family has always been split in two parts because of the unhappy marriage his parents shared. It was obvious that Katsuo's mother, Mitsuki, and father, Takumi, only remained being a couple for the sake of their children. The chasm that ran through their family was clearly recognizable by the way the parents educated their two boys, Katsuo and Senri. Unlike his wife, Takumi was a father who considered success and talent as the most important thing in life. He began to further his oldest son at the age of five; whereas Katsuo was completely left in the hands of his mother, Mitsuki. Senri turned out to be a prodigy, who possessed great potentials; no one in his environment doubted that he would one day become Japan's best pianist. Katsuo, who received a "normal" education thanks to his mother, shrank to the size of a mouse whenever he was standing beside or facing his Onii-san. At the age of thirty-five Katsuo (aged seven) and Senri’s (aged thirteen) mother died from an illness and left her family behind. Little Katsuo was able to deal with his mother's death in some degree and understood what had happened to her and why. His older brother Senri, on the other hand, continued playing the piano, hurrying from performance to performance, and was always accompanied by his father. Thus, Katsuo spent the majority of his time with his grandmother, who dropped by every day to take care of him. Whenever he had the chance to catch a glance of Senri, he wondered what was so amazing about the piano. Senri played it with such implicitness – as if he couldn't live without it. It appeared to Katsuo that Mitsuki's death didn't affect Senri at all and this fear strengthened when he remembered with how much apathy his brother had showed back at the funeral. At the age of seven, Katsuo snuck into Senri's room and finally dared to examine the piano. Unfortunately Senri caught him off-guard and made no secret of his fury. Having always been a very proud person (due to Takumi's education), he later called Katsuo an "untalented fool". Offended by the insult, Katsuo darted towards his brother with raised fists and lashed at him; but he was grabbed and slapped by his father who later called him "useless". Having heard those words, Katsuo soon decided to start playing the piano to prove them wrong. He also worked very hard at school and became an overachiever in every subject. The cost of his success, however, was his childhood and free time. After elementary school, Katsuo moved to his grandparents, with the determination to enter Ueno Gakuen, a renowned music high school which Senri had attended. He didn't make any efforts to keep in touch with his father and brother. When he got to Ueno, in his freshman year, Hyuga Katsuo was already generally known as the school's new "prodigy". Sometimes, Katsuo hates himself for playing the piano. It has less to do with the instrument itself, but with the reason why he decided to learn it. Even now he does not know what to think about the piano; generally, his attitude towards it is still very contradictory. Relationships Hyuga Takumi: He decided to sacrifice his own free time to support Senri's piano career. He is a father who thinks that success is everything that matters. We do not know what exactly he thinks about Katsuo, since they don't seem to be very close. Hyuga Senri: Katsuo and Senri don't share the best relationship. The two of them are rather distanced and after Katsuo moved out, they have totally lost sight of each other. Senri is always very busy and is currently studying at a German music college, whereas Katsuo works very hard to surpass his older brother one day. Senri is the only one apart from Tachibana-sensei who realizes the flaw in Katsuo's piano playing. He senses that Katsuo is fighting with the piano instead of playing it. In "A Reunion", it is revealed that Senri never liked being a prodigy because he had the feeling that people only cared for him because of his skills. But he accepted his "role" because he really loved music. Nevertheless, Senri was clearly disturbed by the fact that Katsuo, who had been a rather untalented, clumsy boy during their childhood, got more attention from their mother than himself. He has always envied his younger brother; even to the point that he felt threatened when the latter started to play the piano as well. Takemoto Kazuha: Katsuo has known her since middle school and is also aware of her great talent. The two of them have done a duet together in the past and get along pretty well, hence, he also knows about Kazuha’s situation. Although their positions aren't exactly the same, Katsuo still believes that she is the only one who would ever understand him. Kobayashi Hanako: She considers Katsuo as her rival and he knows it (who wouldn't, the way she always glares at him). Although he does not see her as an opponent at all, he doesn't do anything to make this clear. In fact, he sometimes enjoys their one-sided rivalry and often adds fuel to the flames. In his opinion, Hanako is an unbearable self-centered girl, but at times, he also shows a bit of empathy and talks to her in a normal way (without any smug-ness). Hanako later tells him why she is so focused on their rivalry, but he fails to understand her. Later (in "The Cantabile Melody") he comes to envy her because she, unlike him, enjoys playing her instrument. Matsumoto Nobu: Katsuo and Nobu don't get along very well, because Nobu blames Katsuo for an accident which damaged his cap. While Nobu shows his dislike very clearly, Katsuo is a bit more reserved and only counters with sarcastic comments when he's being offended by Nobu. He gradually starts to seriously dislike Nobu due to the latter's misbehaviour in front of Yamamoto Kimiko. Masaoka Shinji: He does not share a special relationship with Masaoka yet. Yamamoto Kimiko: Katsuo met Kimiko in the nurse's office by chance and thinks very highly of her ("The Euphonious Cherry Blossoms Petals"). Although he hasn't exchanged many words with Kimiko yet, he is pleased by her polite attitude, which is pretty much the opposite of Kobayashi Hanako's behaviour. Kawashima Kenta & Nishimura Kojirou: These two are Katsuo's only best friends. Kenta is super-intelligent and in the same class as Kojirou. They are both in a different class than Katsuo, though. Kojirou and Katsuo have known each other since kindergarten, however, even though Kojirou is curious about Katsuo's past, he has never inquired anything out of tactfulness. Sample RP (>=10 lines): "Please enter your name on this list, Hyuga-kun." Following the secretary's instructions, Hyuga Katsuo griped a pen and wrote, in neat letters, his name on the list. After he was done, he quietly returned the pen, together with the list, to the secretary. Takahashi-san, the woman behind the desk, smiled warmly at him and opened the topmost drawer to fetch a hole puncher. Being a very chatty woman, she soon started a conversation with the boy. Whether it was the first time he had signed up for the advanced music course, she asked. No, he answered, he had already participated in the course last year. She went on; asking more about the course – after all, it was not a course everyone could sign-up for, the right to participate was only reserved for the most talented musicians at Ueno Gakuen. Hyuga Katsuo was one of those talented musicians; he had belonged to the elite ever since his freshman year. He replied to every one of the secretary’s questions in a polite manner and always with a benign smile and much humour. The boy's jocular behaviour soon ceased when Takahashi-san's flood of words abruptly stopped; her eyes had just come across Katsuo’s last name. "I remember!" she gasped, pointing her forefinger at him as if she wanted to prove anything, "You must be Hyuga Senri's brother, right?" Katsuo interpreted this as a rhetorical question and tried not to look too querulous at the now wildly gesticulating young woman. He hadn't budged an inch ever since his brother's name had fallen; both feet were deeply ingrained in the ground when a stiff, affirmative grin spread across Katsuo’s face. 'I am such a lucky devil to have "Hyuga Senri the Great" as my brother.' "Hyuga Senri the Great" was the nickname he had given his brother in the course of time, though he only used it with rather bitter aftertaste. Too well did he know those kinds of reactions, the old secretary who had retired last year used to rave about Senri as well ("Polite, honest, ingenious…but still so humble! He is truly one of the most decent young men I have ever met."). Heaven forbid…he really wasn’t very keen on hearing more idolising comments about his brother anymore. And so, with a diffident, but still charming smile, Katsuo apologized and left the secretariat, before his animosity towards his brother could flare up again. He hurried along the empty corridors, with several keys ratting in his pocket, towards the bicycle stands. Katsuo swung himself on the saddle, wound the tubular bike lock around his left shoulder, and whizzed home – determined to displace any thoughts related to Senri for the time being. |
