Hello, I thought it'd be a nice idea to create an extra thread about the piano ^^ Uhm yeah, so what pieces are you currently playing and which one do you absolutely love to play? And are your hands big enough to reach an octave? My hand's so small, although I am comparatively tall (my friend's a head shorter than me, but has bigger hands!) - and I can only just play an octave (maybe that's why my hands always look like claws while I'm playing the piano). |

Yay for piano threads!! Well...being away at school, I don't have access to piano and even if I did, I lack the time to play it properly, so I really don't have any pieces I'm playing at the moment. When I do go home and play around on the piano, I usually pick up some old pieces from when I actually did practice, took lessons, and all that. The pieces I played for grade 10 piano, though, were: - Prelude and Fugue in A flat (?) Major (I can't remember exactly) by J.S. Bach - Nocturne in F# Major, Op. 15 No. 2 by F. Chopin - The Miller's Dance by M.A. de Falla - Pas de deux by S. Barber - Aaand some Mozart Sonata or something that I can't remember (the book was my piano teacher's so it was Russian and I never learned the title...I wasn't very fond of it, anyway ^^) - Study in A Minor, op. 740, no. 41 by C. Czerny - Prelude in C sharp Minor, op. 81, no. 10 by S. Heller My favourite by far was the Nocturne by Chopin Least favourite was that Mozart Sonata.The one piece I really, really want to pick up, though, is Debussy's Arabesque No. 1. It's so pretty and I was able to find the sheet music for it cheaply (because the store was going out of business and had everything for sale). I haven't even been able to try it yet ^^; As for hands, my hands are relatively small. I can reach an octave and if I really stretch it, I can get in a ninth. I have trouble doing multiple octaves or large chords in a row, though, because my hands get tired really easily from stretching so much ^^ I envy people who have large reaches... |

Well, at least you can reach a ninth... *envies you* I am SO excited atm, for my piano lessons are starting next week again! (after a 2-year pause). I bet I have forgotten a lot >_< (oh what will my teacher say!) In the last 2 years I have only been revising some old pieces, like Wedding Day at Troldhaugen (Grieg) Impromptu A flat major op. 142 No.2 (Schubert) Impromptu in G flat major op. 90 No.3 (Schubert) Impromptu A flat major op.90 no.4 (Schubert) Children's Corner (Debussy) @.@ and others It's weird, but I don't seem to like Bach and Mozart very much I don't know why...my favorite composer is Chopin, though I haven't gotten the chance to play very much of him yet (only the raindrop prelude until now...and some other minor things from him)Oh and I often have difficulties with remembering a piece! Is there maybe a method how you can memorize a piece? @.@ sometimes it happens that I lose track in the middle of the piece... |

You can't reach a ninth, even if you really, really stretch? o_o; You do have small hands! I've known people, though, who can reach, like, twelfths or something...it's crazy! LOL I'm sure your piano teacher will understand if you've forgotten stuff. My piano teacher said that she had a beginner student once, just a little kid and all, and he had apparently forgotten everything after the summer break so my piano teacher had to start from scratch She also told me she never expects very much from her students after summer break or Christmas holidays, too. So I'm sure that your teacher will understand 2 years!And, hey, you're like me in terms of liking and disliking certain composers! I always HATED learning Bach pieces - they just don't like me and they're always the ones I struggle with the most. I'd always scare my piano teacher half to death because it would take me so long to learn Bach's pieces that I'd end up finally learning them just a few weeks before my exam Mozart is okay...in grade 9, I played his Fantasy in D Minor, which I absolutely loved. But a lot of his pieces I don't really like...just a few ^^;And, yeah, Chopin is my favourite, too, followed closely by Beethoven Other favourites are Schubert, Tchakikovsky, and Debussy.As for memorizing pieces...I had no trouble with that when I was little, but then I had a lot less on my mind back then and the pieces were a lot more simple. My piano teacher always told me to memorize in pieces...so for one week, memorize two lines, and then the next week, memorize two more, and so on. I tend to memorize purely by practicing over and over and over until I get it stuck in my head and then, eventually, in my fingers. I actually did get lost in the middle of a piece once during an exam...scariest moment of my life, LOL! But I sort of picked a spot in the piece that I did remember, made something up, and kept going - I don't think the examiner even noticed because she didn't comment on it, even though I fully skipped about two lines' worth of music The best thing to do is to make sure you know the piece so well that you barely even have to think about it...and then try not to think too much about it when you play and just let your fingers do all the work ^^;

So...when you memorize a piece, are you able to tell exactly which note follows the next one? Like, b follows g sharp blahblah? Until now, I have tried to memorize pieces by playing them very, very often. Yet it happens to me that once I think of sth else, my mind just goes blank and my fingers stop moving...and I have to start over again! >_< Oh and I'm currently having the following problem: My right hand wants to play trills followed by a termination (uhh help, I dunno what it is called in English) while my left hands plays sextuplets...and it always ends up the same way - I get nervous, my fingers sort of stiffen and I mess up xDDD |

The way my memory works, no In my mind, the music flows from the beginning to the end and is one entire work instead of a bunch of little notes, so as a result, if my piano teacher ever asked me to start from a certain bar or note, I'd be completely lost and she'd have to give me the music for at least a line or two before I got my bearings back.As for blanking out...hmm...it depends on each person, I guess, but I find that eventually, you won't even have to think about the music in your mind. It's almost as if your fingers know exactly what to do and play on their own. If you can get to that point, I find that blanking out isn't so much of a problem. It's also a matter of being able to suppress any sense of panic that might cause you to freak out and lose your place, even for just a moment ^^;
LOL I'm not sure if there's any English term to the "termination" of a trill (I was never good with musical terminology) but I think I know what you mean. Anyway, is there a certain place where you mess up? Like in the middle of the trill, the termination, the sextuplet notes? |

The problem is that my termination never meets the last tone of the sextuplet ![]() My teacher says I am too hectic But I hope that it will work when I start off slowly and practice more ^^;GAH >_< did I mention that I dislike cross-rhythms? lol I just don't seem to have the right feeling for it and I wish I could slice my brain in two halfs - so that every hand can work independently. Currently I am struggling with Debussy's Arabesque No. 1 (the crossrhythms again) and I am practicing it at a veeery slow pace. When I'm "playing" it, I find it very demanding, but when I listen to the CD track, the piece seems to be so easygoing! O_o |

Yep, just practice that part slowly until your fingers get the rhythm worked into them ^^; I don't think there's any other way around that.
Cross-rhythms? Do you mean like one hand plays one rhythm and the other hand plays another? I hate those, too Confused the heck out of me every time. But trust me, you wouldn't want to have your brain split in half =P We studied cases of people who had split-brains and they had SO many problems.Anyway, I know it was just a joke but let's move on ![]() Again, it's all a matter of practice O.o; When you play it slow, it's bound to sound really weird and awkward but just keep at it and keep listening to how it's supposed to sound on recordings. Once you get a hang of the notes, you may be able to start play it faster and get the rhythms right. I dunno...I was someone who would go really slowly at first and once I learned the notes and listened to the recordings a few times, I'd sit at the piano and be able to play it like twice as fast as before, almost like magic, LOL. It was cool but just a little weird ^^; |

They really had split brains?! Is that even possible? OMGYes, I mean like, when the left hand plays eighth notes and the right hand triplets. Because of that, I have once even tried to divide 3 through 2 and 2 through 3 with the calculator...but, yeah, it didn't really help much ![]() So you say that, after some time you will automatically get the right feeling? Does that mean that probably, after you have gained this feeling that you won't have so many problems with cross rhythms anymore (no matter which piece)? Now I have hopes again xDDD |

Yeah, we studied some cases of split-brain people in psychology class...I think they were due to accidents or something, I can't really remember. But yeah, it causes TONS of problems because then the two sides of your brain can't "communicate" with each other ^^ Anyway... LOL I don't know if it's the same for everyone (probably not) but that's how it always was for me It always sounded awkward in the beginning and then I would listen to the recordings a couple times, sit at the piano, and try to play it...and then it would sound ten times better than the last time I played it! Of course, this was after months of practice so it wasn't exactly easy, but it was weird how it happened like that sometimes ![]() But yes, don't give up hope!! Just keep practicing it slowly...slowly...Haha, now I'm sounding like my piano teacher! That was her advice for everything o_O |

Yep, Bach usually composes polyphonic pieces. I don't like his pieces very much, because the melodies always sound so...mechanic (that's my view) ![]() He was a composer who attached great importance to symmetry and logic...(we had to learn everything about Bach's fugues last year in music class...it was really a pain xD) But I guess it depends on everyone's likings - I have a class mate who loves Bach pieces because it's "always the same" *lol* |

Awww and to think- that s one of my fav.s to play. I don't play much classical but eh I do like to play. I have a hard time playing the Bass part while reading piano music- could be because I taught myself. Oh well... right now I'm still in the midst of teaching myself "Kissed by a Rose"- by Seal. I got the first half of the song down- it's just the key change that get's me... Oh and I think it's kind of funny that I know random parts to songs like "Shawty what yo name is?" and "Soulja Boy"- to play "Soulja boy" the notes are C,A,A(b) aka flat. so yeah...fun fun. My main instrument is saxaphone. |

So, what is, in your opinion, the most difficult piano piece ever? (Or the most difficult one you've played so far?) |

I'm begining piano basically all over again. I get pretty far until lunch is over that is. Then I go home and practice some more. But I'm slowly getting all of it. I hope to improve as I practice. I joined the Basketball Pep band this year. It's really fun. We play Hey, Peter Gun/Blues Brothers, Give Me Some Lovein', Wipeout, Devil with the Blue Dress On, Locomotion, Coll, Mambo (Last two from West Side Story), Funky Street, White Rabbit, HAil West Virginia, Notre Dame, National Anthem, National Emblem, Play that Funky Music, and Eye of the Tigeer. My freind plays an amazing piece in there that has a piano solo. It's amazing. His hands move so fast on the keys of the piano. I love it. |

Right now my hardest song I'm learning is that stupid Charlie Brown Christmas one -_- I feel like a looser trying to play it and not being able to play both parts...it's just weird. Anyways yeah- I love to also see pianists play piano. When their hands move...it's just amazing. Music captures the soul. |

Least favourite was that Mozart Sonata.

I don't know why...my favorite composer is Chopin, though I haven't gotten the chance to play very much of him yet (only the raindrop prelude until now...and some other minor things from him)
