Name, Age: Shikumo, 21... old I know... Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: Yes. Piano, ever since I was 3. Just started learning the violin as well since last July but I'm seriously, seriously out of practice. Also played the recorder back in primary school but I guess that doesn't really count, does it? Character you apply for: Yunoki Azuma How often will you be able to role-play?: As often as necessary. I live alone with friends so I don't have "parental control" over my internet usage or anything. I check the forum everyday for any replies to my posts, though I might reply slower during busy times like exams (for sure). Just kick my butt on msn ("You! Post your RP reply now!" or something?!) if I didn't reply and I'll do it soon, if not right away. Picture of character (optional for original character): ~ Click here for his picture ~ Character Description (biography, behaviour, relationships...): Yunoki Azuma is a third-year student at Seisou Gakuen (Music Department) majoring in flute. To the whole wide world, the name Yunoki Azuma is an equivalent term for “perfection”. Having a somewhat effeminate appearance and long purplish hair that falls to his waist, Yunoki is no doubt pretty. Being the third son of a well-known family, he often travels to and from school in his own private car. Although Yunoki never ever boasts about his wonderful parentage, he naturally has a respectful and elegant manner that clearly shows his refined upbringing. Not only is Yunoki always gentle and caring to everyone, his academic results are always amongst the top. He is someone you can count on as your helpful senpai and/or your ideal student. His perfect existence is so influential in school that a Shineitai (bodyguards) consists of his fangirls has been created. Yet, nobody – not even his apparent best friend Hihara Kazuki - knows that the “Perfect Yunoki” is just an illusion he consciously created. Nobody… except perhaps Hino Kahoko. Under the mask, the real Yunoki Azuma is actually mean and scheming. But if one considers more deeply about the family environment Yunoki grew up in, it is actually not difficult to understand why he eventually developed into his current character/personality. Carrying the infamous Yunoki family name, the flutist has to fulfil expectations of his family – that is, everything he has been doing to keep up his “Perfect Yunoki” mask, for he must never bring shame to the family no matter what (he was cautious about this even when he was showing is real self to Hino). However, being born as a third son of a prestigious family, Yunoki has to take care not to surpass his two brothers in any possible way. This means that Yunoki can never develop his talent to reach his greatest potential, which can be really frustrating. One example is him being forced to stop learning piano because he was going to surpass his brother. If he hadn’t stopped learning, who knows how far Yunoki would get on with his pianist skills? As the third son, it is possible that whatever he achieves has already been achieved by his brothers, meaning that others will naturally take them for granted as his responsibility (hence little or next to no chance for Yunoki to get family praise/recognition/approval/etc). To make things even worse, he has a very harsh and traditional grandmother as one of his “main caregivers”. His grandmother is the Law; literally everything is under her control. Strict obedience without questioning is required at all times, even during times when she isn’t necessarily correct… or rather, when she shouldn’t even be interfering. A nice example is that Yunoki’s fiancée will be chosen be her – he doesn’t even have the freedom to love! Yunoki is very aware that as long as his grandmother is alive, he will never have freedom. Never. At the moment where he was born to the Yunoki family, his future was all decided. There was simply no escape; females could somewhat get away by getting married, but males must carry over the family business. It is probable that by experience, Yunoki has learnt from a really early age on that showing his real emotions/wishes/etc would only bring about negative consequences (or at least they would simply be disregarded), hence he has given up on hopes (an example is that he doesn’t particularly object to the arranged engagement thingy) and has started to hide them all in a desperate attempt to protect himself. If he did not hope for anything from the very beginning, he would not get hurt afterwards. One of such resulting outcomes is that he gradually grew up to be apathetic to things around him (ie. not minding or caring what is going to happen to him) in order not to be disappointed. The positive responses he gets by displaying the “Perfect Yunoki” mask further reinforces him to continue to hide himself as it provides him with all the attention/affection/recognition he otherwise wouldn’t be able to obtain. Yet, because the image he displayed to gain them isn’t his real self, such attention/affection/recognition only gives Yunoki minimal comfort (if any) as time goes on, eventually leading him to develop both his current personality and the idea that other people are all fools (“Devil [his real self] and Angel [his public image] are laughing face to face at humans”, translated from Yunoki’s image song <Black & White>). Bearing such a heavy family burden upon his shoulders, having to chronically hide his heart and without any real friends to turn to… no matter what kind of mask one puts up, it still must have been lonely and tedious. This should also be true for Yunoki. Although his rational mind knows a bit too clearly what he has to do/what future awaits him, although he has learnt to be apathetic and not to hope for anything…the truth is that either consciously or unconsciously, Yunoki actually longs for freedom (as reflected by the frequent mentioning and usage of words/concepts/metaphors like “wings”, “freedom”, “dreams”, “wishes”, “coming true” and “illusion” etc in his character songs). One possible reason of why Yunoki only opens up to Hino is that Hino has what he has been wishing all his life – freedom to chase after one’s dreams. To Yunoki, his family is almost like an inescapable fate: no matter how hard he tries, he will never have freedom, let alone the ability to go after his dreams. (if he has any left uncrushed). Yet Hino, a girl with a somewhat ordinary family upbringing, is free to persue any dream of hers as she wishes. On top of that, she puts a lot of effort into everything without giving up. It must have pained Yunoki to see such an honest and resilient Hino – he might even be unconsciously jealous. This is when his real darker side kicks in, in which such actions should offer him some sort of comfort in a way. So… what kind of future awaits Yunoki? Will he bow towards the absolute authority of his family and give up music? Or will he open up a whole new path under the magical power of music? You might be the one that changes Yunoki’s fate forever! Your goals? (What do you plan with your character?) Become lovers with Hihara! Kaji sounds nice too, but unfortunately we don’t have one here. Oh well… Right I’m just joking. ![]() Seriously, I’d like to first expose more weakness/thoughts/emotions of Yunoki. Then I’d like to see him finally getting some freedom, even just for a tiny bit. A somewhat impossible mission I know, but I’d still like that. Opening Yunoki up to a few more people sounds nice too, so that he’ll finally make some real friends for a change. Poor Hihara, if he knew he was being fooled by Yunoki for nearly 3 whole years…! Short sample RP (~10 lines): Locking the door so that nobody could possibly burst in (well, unless they decided to break down the whole door), Yunoki Azuma started to undress himself. Taking care to put his tie pin and his gold pocket watch away in a safe place first, he then proceeded to take off his clothing: blazer, vest, tie, shirt, socks, trousers, pants… Slowly, piece by piece fell onto the floor. Yunoki habitually picked them up, just to throw the lot into the laundry basket marked “Y. A.”. Stepping into the shower, Yunoki turned the tab onto the suitable temperature. Streaks of warm water immediately came out of the shower head and flowed smoothly down his body. Actually he had always enjoyed bathing, for it was a private time when he would not be disturbed by anyone… a special place where he could literally lay bare without having to hide himself in any way. The flutist closed his eyes to relax; to his mild surprise, images of Hino unexpectedly popped up. The girl was a nice pastime indeed, he admitted – it only increased his desire to mess her around even more whenever he saw her reactions. Although showing Hino his real self was his miscalculation, it wasn’t unpleasant at all; rather, it even seemed to feel slightly reliving. Yunoki then applied some lavender shampoo onto his silky hair, not wanting to think about the girl any further at this moment. Yunoki was usually at his best mood after bathing; yet today, his good mood was destroyed once again when a particular someone managed to pass by right in front of the bathroom precisely at this particular moment. “Azuma-san. Your bath took too long. Be quicker next time.” The old woman paused for a brief second, just to leave behind this command as-a-matter-of-factly without a faintest hint of emotion, before starting to walk away. “Understood, obaa-sama. Oyasuminasai*.” Yunoki bowed slightly and waited until the silhouette totally disappeared before returning to his room in the opposite direction. Damn. I know she will never understand how long it takes just to wash my hair, but does she have to repeat that so often? Letting out an almost inaudible sigh, Yunoki pushed the thought out of his conscious mind and climbed into the futon that has be nicely set out by some servants while he was bathing a while ago. Streaks of pale moonlight shone gently through the half-closed curtains onto his blanket, as if inviting him to its never-ending kingdom of white nights. If there was a paradise where all wishes were granted… Together with his hidden emotions, Yunoki slowly drifted off into his own private world of dreams... [*Oyasuminasai is a polite way to greet someone goodnight in Japanese.] |
