Previous: Chapter 9: A Surprise Symphony Next: Chapter 11: N/A [Week One] Pretty long title, isn't it? ^^; Hope it's okay... I didn't write anything about the sakura viewing and advanced class yet - feel free to do it if you feel like it =3 As for the mid-term exams...I'm not sure if they really take place in May, here's my source: http://www.nanryo-h.spec.ed.jp/english/eindex.htm By the way, I also noticed that since the Japanese school year starts in April, we kind of have a problem with the grades here. For instance, 3rd-year charas would have left school already, so let's ignore this little mistake, okay? =3 ____________________________________________ Spring had arrived and dispelled the cold, morose winter landscape together with the bright chirping of the birds. The days were slowly getting longer and more and more people dared to undertake outdoor activities. When Hyuga Katsuo left his grandparents' house shortly after six o’clock in the morning, some of his elderly neighbours were already outside scavenging the street or setting up small tables and stools for future Go matches. A few were also doing morning exercises in the garden. Katsuo knew that elderly people in general didn't need much sleep (his grandfather for instance got up at five o'clock in the morning) so it was no big surprise for the boy to see so many familiar faces greeting him in the early morning. "Ohayo, Katsuo-kun! Are you on your way to school?" Katsuo nodded and stopped to exchange some friendly words with his neighbours. He was much-loved for his polite but not impersonal behaviour and additionally also the youngest person living in the mainly by retirees inhabited housing estate. To some of the seniors, he was like a grandson they never had and they treated him with utmost amicability. Most of the time, they showed their cordiality by treating him and his grandparents to some home-made cake. The boy returned their cordiality in a more formal but not less charming way and always played a piece on the piano afterwards as an acknowledgement of his gratitude. Nevertheless, he always kept a certain distance and his words were well-considered and controlled, never emotional. "I have to leave or I'll be late. I wish you a nice day." The arrival of the new season hadn't left a big impression on Hyuga Katsuo. He was too busy with school and studying, his mid-term exams were coming up in May and he did not want to leave anything to chance. The two big goals he had set for this spring was to finish Rachmaninov's Piano Sonata No.2 and to be ranked among the top ten examination results. There was definitely no time for dreaming about the beauty of spring. Edited by Tsuchiura Ryotarou, Jun 12 2008, 02:42 PM.

"Seiji," A woman's voice called irritably. Her tone revealed that she thought very highly of herself, and how very right to do so she was. The woman of the household was home for a week, and neither of twins were particularly thrilled with the development. "You're going to be late for school!" "Of course," Seiji mentioned to his brother across the bedroom they shared, "She's always bugging me but never bothers you." He pulled a red tie around his neck and turned with his arms outstretched, "Well? Is there anything wrong? I don't want that woman touching me, so everything has to be perfect." Shinji pulled on his blazer, examining Seiji's clean appearance with amusemant. His older brother was always so unkempt. It was like looking in a mirror now that Seiji wasn't wearing all his piercings. Save for the punctures here and there, he looked exactly the same as Shinji himself. "You look fine, as far as I know. You don't usually follow your school's dress code anyway, so I wouldn't know what a proper uniform looks like. I already put all your textbooks in your bag last night, so you don't have to worry about that." "Okay, thanks. I'm going to go ahead, otherwise catwoman is going to have a cow." Seiji laughed, just to be scolded by their mother who stamped her foot and yelled, "If you have time to be laughing, then you should use it to get your butt down here! You have three seconds! Honestly, sometimes I wonder how you're going to inherit anything at all!" "I'll call you later or something. I'll probably end up getting dragged to a business meeting this afternoon, so you pick dinner tonight." With that, Seiji bolted, leaving Shinji to calmly get ready for school. Midterms were never an issue for Shinji. He'd gotten good at learning pieces and getting good at them without being able to practice much at home. And now that his mother was home, there wouldn't be any practicing at home at all. What a pain. "Shinji-sama," The cook greeted him when he walked into the dining room, "There's a new chef today who has a penchant for melted coffee cake. Would you like a slice for breakfast?" "Not at the moment, thank you. I'm going to be late. If you will, a bowl of au gratin potatoes for the road." Shinji replied, adjusting his tie and taking his bag from a butler, "Not too much." Ah, the notoriously strange taste of breakfast that Shinji had struck again. He hated eating cold foods for breakfast, preferring dishes that were probably more suited for dinner or lunch. "Have a nice day at school, Shinji-sama." The maid who repeated this same line every weekday said, holding up his violin, "And good luck on your midterms!" |

[I've been eagerly waiting for this!!! xD] Hanako was snoozing peacefully in her soft, squishy bed. She had completely slept through her alarm clock's rings and was pretty close of being late. Luckily, her mother Mimiko was ready to bang her door down. She put up a fist and slammed it on Hanako's door, slowly awakening the high-school girl. "HA-NA-KO!!! Get up!!! You're going to be late!!!!" Hanako tilted her head towards the clock and realized what the time was. Widening her eyes, she threw her sheets off her bed and dashed into her bathroom. Mimiko sighed, then went downstairs to reheat Hanako's breakfast. Madly brushing her teeth, then bolting downstairs to get her breakfast, Hanako sat on the chair farthest from her father. Her father Tsukasa was reading a newspaper that covered his face, so he didn't notice that Hanako was there. Suddenly, Mimiko cried,"AH!" Hanako and Tsukasa looked up, staring at the mother who just turned off the stove. "I almost forgot, Hanako-chan! Hold on, okay?" Her mother dashed out of the kitchen and went inside the storage room. "I can't hold on, Okaa-san! I have to go to school!" Hanako muffled, stuffing her heated sandwich in her mouth, then going to get her clarinet case, which was supposed to be where the household put on their shoes. However, her clarinet case was nowhere to be seen. That was when Mimiko ran towards her daughter and handed her a new, unscathed clarinet case. "I know how damaged your old one was, so I bought another one. Now hurry and run along now." Hanako smiled at her mother who was always kind towards her and took the clarinet case from Mimiko's grasp. In a frenzy, she put on her shoes and opened the door. "I'm leaving!" Hanako grinned. Before she closed the door, she heard her father crumple his newspaper in irritation. "...Whatever! I'm late! No need to think so much right now!!" Hanako smiled, then sprinted away from her neighborhood and towards her school Ueno Gakuen. |

Is it okay for me to post already? And is it okay for me to assume that Kobayashi has arrived on the school grounds? _________________________ "Ossu, Katsuo!" The greetings of his two best friends Kenta and Kojirou jerked Katsuo back to reality. He had been trying to arrange a sensible study schedule for the next few weeks when suddenly someone grasped him by the shoulder and shook him awake. "Hyuga, What're you doing? You look comtemplative." Kenta asked with slight concernment drawn on his face. Kojirou on the other hand, hit his friend hard on the back and replied, "Nyah, our overachiever's probably trying to figure out how to receive the best exam results again…right?" "Not really," Katsuo lied, grimacing, "I just doubt that I'll have the nerve to pull an all-nighter the day before midterms. But speaking of which, you two should start preparing for your midterms as well." His reply sounded rather lethargic, which was partially due to the pain in his back Kojirou had just caused. As usually, the two boys just waved his wise advice aside and explained that life was too short to be wasted on studying. Kojirou was already used to all-nighter cram sessions anyway whereas Kenta was intelligent by birth and did not need to study at all for subjects like physics or maths. Out of the three boys, Katsuo was the most hard-working one who had been cramming regularly ever since he entered second grade. Nevertheless, he hid his ambition and endeavours the best he could. "Guess what happened to me yesterday?" Kojirou asked his friends as they marched across the campus. Both Kenta and Katsuo shrugged, for both weren't sure whether they wanted to know the answer or not. They passed a cluster of giggling girls who started to point at Kojirou and entered the building. "Katsuo, do you remember that violin-playing girl from my class?" - Kenta groaned loudly, he was in the same class as Kojirou and knew who his friend was talking about - "Well, she was chatting with her friends about the cherry blossom viewing at Ueno Park. When I heard that, I screwed up all my courage and offered to accompany her. And now, guess what she did?" "She hit you on the head with her bag and rejected?" Katsuo asked, eyes wide open, as if he was hoping for his assumption to be correct. Knowing that the majority of Katsuo's comments were meant ironically, Kojirou continued undeterredly, "Nope, wrong guess, she agreed! Now isn't that great?" Whistling triumphantly, Kojirou stomped off to his class, followed by a slightly awkward-looking Kenta. 'Now what's so great about going to a sakura viewing together with a girl? Dreamer…' After having parted ways with his friends, Katsuo remembered that he had forgotten to buy his weekly coffee in the morning. Poor Katsuo had nothing to push him up in the morning, nothing to dispel his springtime lethargy. Absolutely nothing… At precisely that moment, Kobayashi Hanako appeared on the scene. A smeary grin spread across his previously dull face. Teasing Kobayashi Hanako would be the perfect antidote to spring lethargy. "Ossu, Kobayashi~! Whither goest thou?" |

[Ooh, I don't mind! It's completely fine. ^_^] Hanako screeched a stop as she realized who was in front of her, the [lovely] Hyuga Katsuo. His smirk just made Hanako frown and she stomped towards him. Today was a wonderful day, and she wasn't going to let her arch-rival ruin it. "Ossu, Kobayashi~! Whither goest thou?" Hanako blinked, then slowly tilted her head down. "Well first I.....wait a second. You lost me at 'whither'. I'm not taking literature, so don't talk Shakespeare with me!" Hanako blurted. "Ah-ah-AHCHOO!!!!" Since there was a sudden gust of wind, Hanako's nose began to itch. She couldn't help it, There were dust particles in the air. Suddenly, Hanako had let out a gigantic sneeze that could have probably been heard inside the school too. The students around her were wide-eyed and surprised at the sudden uproar. "Urk. Allergies. You're lucky you don't have them, Hyuga Katsuo." Hanako sniffled, rubbing her slightly red nose. Then, she looked up at the bright sky, where there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. She then wondered where the big gust of wind came from. "The only good thing about this season is sakura viewing! Especially if you're with someone special!!" Hanako blushed, thinking about her parted sensei, "kya"-ing once in awhile. Then she looked back down to still see Hyuga Katsuo in front of her. "But I bet a person like you don't like sakura viewing huh?" |

"Ah-ah-AHCHOO!!!!" The clangourous sound of Kobayashi's sneeze almost blew away his ear drum. Who would have thought that the "petite" girl could sneeze so loudly? Although Katsuo had already learned a lot about the Kobayashi's nice little habits he nevertheless wondered whether her sneezes were always accompanied by such a voluminous crescendo. "Urk. Allergies. You're lucky you don't have them, Hyuga Katsuo." Hyuga Katsuo had not always been so lucky. In his early childhood, he had been suffering from allergies as well (the palette of his ailments varied from itching eyes to an uncontrollably running nose). Luckily, nature had mercy on him and relieved him from this burden when he enrolled to Middle School. "The only good thing about this season is sakura viewing! Especially if you're with someone special!! But I bet a person like you don't like sakura viewing huh?" After hearing Kobayashi's last words, Katsuo couldn't restrain himself anymore and burst out laughing. He never expected someone like Kobayashi to be an airhead like Kojirou. The picture of a beet-red-faced Kobayashi standing below a cherry blossom tree, holding hands with a "special person", was too hilarious to ignore. Afterall, he only knew Kobayashi as the devil-like, strange, combative clarinettist who enjoyed claiming to be his arch-rival. What kind of person could she possibly fall for and moreover, who in the world would actually hold hands with her voluntarily? After laughing for about five minutes, Katsuo finally got a grip of himself, soon noticing how sore his stomach was from trying to hold in laughter. The boy didn't recall having ever laughed so hard since he enrolled to Ueno Gakuen. Hence it was no wonder that deep down inside he was actually grateful for his exhilarated mood. "Sorry, er, lost control of myself. " Because the picture of Kobayashi and the cherry blossom tree popped into his mind once again, he took a deep breath before continuing with mock seriousness, "I beg your pardon! Since I am Japanese, I am a huuuuge ~ fan of cherry blossom viewings! The pink-ish color of the petals always gives me a warm and fluffy feeling! Hai hai, Kobayashi, I bet you would have never thought that I had a romantic soul?" _____________________________ Vivi: Katsuo, you liar! [Nope. That's why Hanako is daydreaming about it so much. xD] The continuous laughter the boy had emitted had left Hanako with a dumbfounded looking face, completely forgetting about what she was just thinking about. The laughter lasted for about five minutes tops, but laughter coming from Hyuga Katsuo that lasted more than one second was more than enough to light Hanako's fuse. She took one gigantic, deep breath, trying not to hyperventilate. "Sorry, er, lost control of myself. " "OF COURSE YOU DID! Laughing for five minutes..." Hanako blurted, tapping her left foot with a pouting face. His smug face after bursting into laughter was so irritating to the girl, that she was practically ready to uppercut him. However, she didn't, and she hoped he was grateful that she didn't go kung-fu on him. Suddenly, he had a completely serious face as if he wasn't cackling just a few moments ago. He then stated something that made Hanako completely sick. "I beg your pardon! Since I am Japanese, I am a huuuuge ~ fan of cherry blossom viewings! The pink-ish color of the petals always gives me a warm and fluffy feeling! Hai hai, Kobayashi, I bet you would have never thought that I had a romantic soul?" "WHAT WARM AND FLUFFLY FEELING!?!?! WHAT ROMANTIC SOUL!?!" Hanako cried, completely taken by his past statement. Some students turned their heads to see who yelled such an outburst, but then realized it was just Kobayashi Hanako. She stared at the boy, with the completely stoned face, and heaved out a little smirk. "Just imagining you with a romantic soul and having a warm and fluffy feeling under a sakura tree is enough to make my day, Hyuga Katsuo. Never in all my life have I ever thought of something as ridiculous as that! What a soul you have, Hyuga Katsuo." Hanako giggled. Some time later, a very stupid image of Hyuga Katsuo flashed up in her mind and her tiny giggles turned to thundering laughter. She couldn't help at the stupidity within the image that had been permanently carved into her mind. Some students inside the building cried "SHUT UP" to Hanako. Five minutes later, the etched picture had disappeared and Hanako was able to maintain herself again. She felt like she had just had a case of deja vu and realized what had just occured again. She sneered at Hyuga Katsuo and scoffed. "I'm sorry, I lost control of myself. I have NO idea what has gotten into me, forgive me." |

Ah. Kobayashi was being loud as usual. As soon as he stepped out of the car, shooing away the chauffer that was trying to open the door for him, he heard an echoing sneeze that sent him back into the back in surprise. "Shinji-sam-" "I'm fine." Shinji insisted, standing up and shoving the door shut behind him, "You can leave now." He said, readjusting his tie and walking towards his classroom to reassure his teacher that he would be able to participate in the music class. An aggravated look crossed Shinji's face when he heard laughter- uncontrollable, uncontained laughter. As such, he wasn't surprised to see that it was Kobayashi. He let himself watch out of the corner of his eye. The guy she was with was oddly familiar. Ah, the piano prodigy. Hyuga, Shinji remembered, walking by without even pausing to greet anyone. He didn't want another headache this early in the morning, especially when his mother had been screeching her head off from dawn to when she departed with Seiji about how the stylist wasn't curling her hair right. He stopped in his tracks, catching sight of the very person he wanted to see. "Ah, Tachibana-sensei." Shinji called, hurrying to catch up to the man, "I apologize for suddenly asking this, but are the sign-up's for the advanced music class still being accepted? I'd like to join, if at all possible." |

"WHAT WARM AND FLUFFLY FEELING!?!?! WHAT ROMANTIC SOUL!?! Just imagining you with a romantic soul and having a warm and fluffy feeling under a sakura tree is enough to make my day, Hyuga Katsuo. Never in all my life have I ever thought of something as ridiculous as that! What a soul you have, Hyuga Katsuo." Kobayashi’s laughter – which initially started off as mere giggling – was just was as ear piercing as her sneeze. Several students in their vicinity started to whisper and glared angrily at them, but Katsuo remained calm while he observed his schoolmate intently. 'We obviously have the same thoughts…the only difference is that Kobayashi always has to speak out her opinion loudly…' "I'm sorry, I lost control of myself. I have NO idea what has gotten into me, forgive me." Her response was not bad. She had parodied his very own comment and this time, her "payback" actually sounded intelligent. Much to Katsuo's delight, their conversation grew to be more and more entertaining and the sad fact that he had omitted to buy a cup of coffee was forgotten. It did feel weird, though, to be standing there and laughing with a person like Kobayashi Hanako. 'How ironic…' "Of course I will forgive you ~" Katsuo outstretched his arms as a factitious gesture of forgiveness before he went on in the same smeary voice, "Afterall, I can't blame you for appreciating my wonderful sense of humour. I am happy I made you laugh for a change, you know. It is a lot more fun than to receive death glares from you. On the other hand I have to compliment you; your joke was not bad either. It almost sounded as if you really had experienced the beauty of cherry blossom viewings together with a special person." |

Hyuga Katsuo had noted Hanako for her revenge. An apprasing joke, he had said, and had also said that he was happy that she had made him laugh that day. Hanako put on a smug face, wondering if he was asking for a death glare. She shot a quick one at him, then turned back to a sort of irritated face, for she had heard something interesting. "It almost sounded as if you really had experienced the beauty of cherry blossom viewings together with a special person." Of all the wrong things Hyuga Katsuo said in the conversation [one notable one was him saying he was humorous] this was to be the most incorrect. Hanako stared into his eyes, but not with her usual bloodshot ones. "Well, I never did. I wish I could, but I can't anymore. Besides, I haven't went sakura viewing in a long time! The last time I went was with my mother I suppose...How old was I then?" Hanako continued to blabber random statements, counting with her fingers, and was proud when she remembered a fragment of her memory. She then paused, then smirked. "Have you ever went sakura viewing with your 'romantic soul' with anyone special?" Hanako asked, emphasizing the "romantic soul". |

"Have you ever went sakura viewing with your 'romantic soul' with anyone special?" "Of course," Katsuo (rep)lied quick like a shot, "my romantic soul has indeed visited a cherry blossom viewing together with a special person." He didn't intend to tell her anything about his private life, didn't want to reveal so much of himself in front of her. In fact, the last cherry blossom viewing he had attended was dated back about ten years before; it had been the one in the year before his mother's death. Ever since then, he had been avoiding the spring event, spending his free time on working and practicing instead. Both his "romantic soul" and the fact that he had gone to a cherry blossom viewing with a special person (in a romantic sense) before were merely products of his imagination. If he really went to a cherry blossom viewing, he wouldn't feel any joy like Kojirou and Kobayashi. Not only did cherry blossoms not give him a fluffy and warm feeling, but they also made him feel blue because they revoked many suppressed memories. If he was forced to go to a cherry blossom viewing nonetheless he would perhaps only grumble over the wasted time or fall asleep under the trees. "Ah, what a shame, the bell has rung. But don't be sad, Kobayashi, I’m sure we'll get the chance to talk again. Meanwhile, have fun dreaming about cherry blossoms and don't miss me too badly!" The sound of the school bell had interrupted their conversation. Smirking, Katsuo saluted and vanished around the next corner. |

"Eh~ the bell rung already? Mou... that's the last time I ask Yuuma-nii-san to wake me up." Kimiko was a few blocks away from school when she heard the distinctive bell signaling the beginning of class. She immediately broke into a sprint, her right hand holding on to the strap of her messenger bag, the left firmly gripping the handle of her trumpet case. Her mind was set on reaching the classroom before the teacher; there was no time to worry about the highlighted bangs irritating her eyes, or the dark case banging into her knee with every other step. As she passed the school gates, her run slowed down to a fast walk before she stopped next to a bare tree, her right hand pushing against the bark to steady herself as she caught her breath. Physical activities had never been part of her stronger areas, and running was definitely one of her least favorite things to do. As she took a step away from the tree, her stomach protested with a somewhat inaudible rumble; she had woken up so late in the morning, she left home without eating a proper breakfast. I should buy something to eat at break... she decided, trying her best to ignore the growling. "Yamamoto-chan! Ohayou!" Several students cried out to her as she straightened up. "Ah, ohayou gozaimasu." Kimiko wore a calm smile on her face as she walked towards the group, joining them in their walk towards the school building. "You all seem cheerful this morning." "Well, it's a new season. You should brighten up too, seeing as how you're always a little down during the winter," one of the female students decided to poke fun at Kimiko with a small giggle. Kimiko gave a small laugh at the comment. "Yes, maybe I should." She decided to play along with the joke, not realizing how different she acted before the seasons changed. She eventually reached her classroom with time to spare; that was good news, considering she was still a little out of breath from her morning run. There were several greetings directed towards her, to which she respectfully responded back to as she made her way to her desk. The trumpet case was set down carefully by her chair, and only when she sat down did she realize how red her left knee was from being hit by the case so often. Ah, maybe I should be more careful next time I run to class... or start waking up earlier. You should brighten up too... She smiled a little at the thought while brushing her bangs out of her dark eyes. Heh, I suppose I will. After all, it is a new day... |

Hanako slowly followed to class a few minutes after Hyuga went inside. She was speed walking a little, not wanting to run because her skirt would fly up and down. A couple of students were also rushing to get to their next class, so they were knocking Hanako down as they were in the hallway. "Ack! Stop it, you jerks!!" Hanako yelled, hitting a random person with her clarinet case. Then she sped off, clutching her case tightly, hands filled with sweat. Not long after, Hanako reached her homeroom and slammed it open. "I'M NOT LATE AM I?!?!?" Hanako cried, panting. Some random students, eyes widened, shook their head no, and Hanako started to grin. She walked to her desk to place her instrument on the top. She sat down for a few seconds, then got bored. So, she stood back up and roamed around the classroom. Then her eyes had stopped on one of her classmate, Yamamoto Kimiko. Hanako was bored, so she decided to walk by her desk. "Good morning, Ya-chan! You don't mind me calling you that, do you?" Hanako smiled, placing her hands on her desk. |

"I'M NOT LATE AM I?!?!?" Kimiko's head turned sharply towards the door when she heard someone shouting. Ah, Kobayashi-san... energetic as always. It took some effort for her to stifle a laugh as she glanced around the classroom, observing the different expressions directed towards Hanako's entrance. Then she turned back towards the empty front of the classroom, wondering what she would do after school today, but her train of thought was soon interrupted by a familiar voice. "Good morning, Ya-chan! You don't mind me calling you that, do you?" "Ohayou gozaimasu, Kobayashi-san," Kimiko responded politely to her classmate with a small inclination of her head. She paused a moment, thinking about Hanako's second comment before adding a "No, not at all" with a small smile. Another pause followed; there was something on Kimiko's mind, but she wasn't sure how to phrase it. Eventually, she decided to voice her thought after carefully choosing her words. "I don't know how you do it, Kobayashi-san, but you always seem so energetic whenever I see you." |

"I don't know how you do it, Kobayashi-san, but you always seem so energetic whenever I see you." Hanako blinked, then continued to smile her usual, self-confident grin. She did not understand why Kimiko asked such a question, nor how she doesn't know how to be like that. "What are you talking about, Ya-chan? Being energetic is something anyone can do! All you have to do is smile. Like this~" Hanako used both of her hands and pulled the ends of Kimiko's lips, forcing her to smile. She continued to do so for a few more seconds, then stopped. She put both of her hands behind her back and continued to smile. "That's all you have to do! Smile~, but don't go and give a creepy smile like a particular I know. That is not being energetic, but slimy." |
