Name, Age:
Mel, 20

Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?:
I’ve played piano for about 13 years in a variety of different styles, and I’ve played guitar for 3. Additionally, I fiddle around with the choir chimes, tambourine, and as singers often say, I play the throat.

Character you apply for:
Hino Kahoko

How often will you be able to role-play?:
I’d like to say every day, but that’s probably only realistic during the summer months when I’ll have more time. However, I’ll at least be here consistently every week, especially since Hino is such a main character. I’m determined to be a presence on the board and not leave everyone hanging.

Character Description (biography, behaviour, relationships...):
Hino Kahoko is a second year general education student at Seisou Academy. Of all the musicians in the school, she is the most inexperienced, since Lilli gifted her with a magic violin that she in truth didn’t know how to play. Before the concours, she couldn’t even read music, but now she is dedicated to actually learning how to play her non-magical violin because of her discovery that she loves music.
Hino has difficulty balancing her life prior to the concours with her new musical studies and experiences, and in addition to being rather clumsy, her (occasionally timid and often spastic) personality initially grates on some of the more seriously-minded music students (ie Tsukimori-kun). Hino always tries her best, but she can become easily discouraged if she feels that she is somehow letting down those people she cares about, or when she is afraid she is not a genuine person. She can be indecisive and unsure of herself, and she is only average at her studies. Hino often has an air of tripping her way through life, but in reality her kind, open heart and her cheerful smile belie an innate understanding of people and music that Hino herself takes for granted. Though she has no formal training, Hino manages to identify the difference between music “with a soul” and music without, and she quickly identifies when someone near her is having a problem or feeling upset, even if she doesn’t immediately know how to fix that problem. She is quick to forgive and even quicker to apologize, and she desires to make her friends happy. Hino forms strong bonds with her friends, as her long-time association with Mio and Nao proves, and she is sentimental about these close bonds and treasures the gifts (both actual, like the music box, and emotional, like their support) they bring.
Hino has a complex relationship with almost everyone in the concours. She feels like a big sister toward Fuyuumi-chan, while at the same time feeling that she has no right to protect her or be admired by her because she was a fraud. Hopefully the sweet girl will continue to open up to her and lose her shyness as time goes on.
She is in awe of Shimizu-kun’s knowledge of music and his extraordinary dedication to practice, though she does worry that he doesn’t get enough rest because he stays up playing the cello all night. The two of them are most at ease when visiting museums or concerts together, relishing the music washing over them.
Tsuchiura-kun has been kind to her since before she even entered the concours, and Hino is extremely grateful for all his assistance even when they were rivals. His technical skill at the piano blows her away, and she will never forget the fact that he helped accompany her during the first selection. Because of this, and the fact that they are both general-ed students and so understand the other’s predicament, Hino has a great affection for Tsuchiura and cheers him on whenever she can, as well as begging him to indulge her by playing Chopin for her so that she can see him play with intensity and precision. More than anything, Hino is touched by the fact that Tsuchiura tries to defend and protect her from censure, even when she’s not sure she deserves his actions.
Yunoki-senpai was at first an elegant upperclassman who seemed calm and rescued Hino from awkward situations, but soon she discovered his darker side, and now she feels extremely uncomfortable and conflicted whenever she interacts with him. His deceit of everyone reminds her of her own guilt at the same thing in the concours, so she can sort of identify with him, and she feels great sorrow at the fact that his family controls his life. However, at the same time, he can be very cruel to her and tease her in ways that make her heart pound and she feels very apprehensive whenever she is alone with him. Never sure if he really dislikes her or if this is his way of relaxing and letting down his guard, Hino always attempts to be respectful to Yunoki and careful around him, even while he is making her blush wildly.
Hihara-senpai could, for many purposes, be her best male friend, given half a chance. He always cheers Hino up with his exuberant personality, and the two of them can play an odd duet together, eat cake and ice cream until they’re sick, or just sit together talking and feel totally at ease around each other. Hino feels that she owes a great debt to Hihara because he has encouraged her so often, and she has to suppress the impulse to hug him occasionally. On the other hand, sometimes he looks at her very seriously and unlike himself, and she can’t help but remember during the training camp when he fell on top of her and she could feel his breath on her neck, and then she is very aware of him as a male and not just her friend. For this reason, she feels uncomfortable addressing him as Kazuki-senpai so easily, because she’s afraid she couldn’t get the words out without embarrassing herself.
Finally, Tsukimori-kun seemed to take an intense dislike to her when they first met, and Hino has tread lightly around him ever since. His incredible talent at the violin intimidates her, but it inspires her as well. He has taught her many things about the care of her violin and he played Ave Maria, the song closest to her heart. Tsukimori seems cold to everyone, but Hino knows that deep down he is a caring person, and she feels warm inside whenever he gives her a rare compliment. Hino strives to win his approval, even while she feels inadequate in the face of his skill. She is mulling over in her mind what some of his actions toward her could mean, like inviting her to his concert personally, but she doesn’t dare ask him about it as that would be mortifying.

Your goals? (what do you plan with your character?)
I want to deepen Hino’s relationship with her violin and demonstrate her falling in love with music and her commitment to playing even after the magic has left her. Of course, I believe there’s much more to Hino than her rather oblivious characterization in the anime demonstrates, and I think she is an extremely compassionate soul with a strong sense of personal responsibility. I’d like to further her relationships and deepening friendships with all the other concours participants, to see how she mentors Fuyuumi, deals with Yunoki’s manipulation, and how long it will take her to finally admit that the boys have feelings for her and she might have them back (but of course she would never make the first move, while at the same time fear rejecting anyone because she herself is unsure of her feelings). Her residual sense of guilt over lying to everyone during the concours would come into play as well, and so she can never quite be at ease around her new friends (especially Tsukimori, who seems to suspect that something odd happened during the event). Now, naturally, she can’t ignore her friendships with Mio and Nao or her studies either, so Hino will have a very busy life to prioritize in the upcoming weeks and months. Oh, yes, and most importantly of all (just kidding, or am I?), how long will it take her to call Hihara by his first name?

Short sample RP (~10 lines):

I’ve been so busy lately, I’ve hardly had time to come up here and practice, Kahoko thought ruefully as she set up her practice stand on the roof of the school. The breeze ruffled her hair and she took a deep breath, trying to calm her ever-present worries before beginning to play. She knew she still had a long way to go before she could become proficient at the violin, but it didn’t matter as much today. All she wanted to do was play from her heart. The new piece she’d checked out from the school library was more challenging than she was used to, but Hino assured herself that she would master it in time. Slowly, her fingers moved across the strings as she opened her eyes and gazed down at the campus below. Everyone’s going home… there go Mio and Nao, and there are the Yunoki bodyguards. A small smile crossed her lips as she recalled their enthusiastic response to Yunoki’s reappearance at the final selection. It was stressful, but so much fun! I’m glad to be able to do it again. That means I can still see everyone. A figure far below her was hopping up and down and waving its arms madly. Hino’s grip faltered on the violin’s neck and a squawking noise came out. She winced inwardly at the sound.
“Oh, it’s Hihara-senpai. I think he sees me.” She lifted the hand holding her bow in greeting before resuming her stance. Maybe I’ll play Gavotte next.
