Tsukimori's birthday celebration. ;D
______________________________________

It was April 17. Len had spent the day just like any other day: he got up, went to school, listened to the lectures about music theory and harmony, practiced for an hour during break, went back to class and prepared to come home. He remembered that his parents were currently taking a break from work and would be at home to greet him. He sighed, half-heartedly glancing at the cherry blossoms that lined the road beside him.

"Tadaima," he called as he walked through the front doors. Taking off his shoes and placing them neatly by the doorway, he proceeded to take his belongings upstairs.

"Ah, okaeri, Len," Hamai Misa replied from her seat on the couch, a cup of tea in her hands. Len stopped at the staircase. "How was school?"

"Same as usual."

"Is that so?" Misa asked, more to herself than to her son. She smiled, taking a delicate sip from the tea. Len took this to mean that she was done, and continued up the staircase. After placing his violin case and school briefcase in his room, he came back downstairs and headed in the direction of the kitchen, looking for something to eat.

"Why don't you come sit down, Len? I haven't been able to properly talk to you lately."

Once more, Len stopped. Face impassive, he turned and headed back to the living room where his mother still sat, drinking her tea. As he took a seat across from her, she smiled, fingering an envelope in her lap. Len noticed it immediately.

"...Is there something you want to tell me, okaa-san?" he asked.

Misa noticed his intense stare and laughed, placing her cup down on the coffee table. "It's nothing so serious, Len. There's no need to be so worked up."

Len's shoulders sagged, his hands dropping helplessly beside him.

His mother's eyes twinkled. "In fact, Len, I have news that may please you. You remember my manager, right? He happened to have a friend who owns a hot spring resort nearby, and I recieved free passes as a gift. Apparently he was a fan of my music and was more than happy to hear that I was on a break."

Len eyed the envelope warily. "And what does this have to do with me?"

"Well, I remembered how your birthday is in a week. I figured that I might as well make use of my time with you and go to the onsen the Saturday after. I've already sent invitations out to your fellow concours participants, since I'm sure they'd like to come along," Misa smiled. "How does that sound with you?"

It took a moment for Len to register what his mother had said. When he was certain that he was not dreaming, he went pale and stared at his mother, temporarily at a loss for words. When he found his voice again, he spoke slowly, hoarsely, "...Are you sure it's not too much trouble? There's no need to celebrate my birthday like this."

"Oh, of course there is. Think of it as a way to relax, after all of the stress of the concours and school. Why, I don't even remember the last time I went to an onsen. Besides, the invitations are already out, and I can't very well take them back in, can I?"

Len's throat went dry and he stood up, unable to answer. After mumbling something that sounded like, "I'm going to practice," he walked stiffly over to the staircase before going upstairs.

Misa simply stared after her son, a smile still gracing her lips. Oh, Len. You're much too stubborn for your own good. I'll have to make sure you enjoy the surprise party I'm throwing for you.

---

In the week that follwed after that conversation, the girls in his class became strangely prone to whispering in groups. Vaguely registering the words "gift" and "birthday" that bubbled out of their mouths, as well as the furtive glances in his direction, Len felt a sickening lurch in his stomach and frowned, looking determinedly out of a window. He wasn't even sure how they could possibly know that his birthday was tomorrow, though he strongly suspected a certain blonde journalist. Unable to handle it anymore, he decided that it was best to head home and he took care to glare coldly at anyone who came remotely within distance of him as he stalked out of the door.

The next day, Len found himself on the recieving end of even more stares than the day before, and he promptly ignored them all. A few of the braver girls, gifts in hand, attempted to go up and give them to him, but one glare from him prevented them from doing so. The day seemed to drag on forever, and he was considerably relieved when the last bell signified the end of the day's classes. He headed towards the practice rooms to get some practice in before heading home.

---
NOTES:

*Tadaima: Usually said when arriving back home.
*Okaeri: Usually said in response to "Tadaima." Means something along the lines of, "Welcome home."

*While Len's practicing, let's have everyone else head over to Len's home where they'll help Misa in preparing for the surprise party.

This is my first post as Shimizu Keiichi so wish me luck!

Number 5...Number 5...Ah. Number 5. Keiichi stopped outside the large house. The Tsukimori residence. One might wonder why he was there, after all he barely talked to his senpai, but Keiichi had received a letter the day before from, of all people, Hamai Misa, asking him to go to her house on the 24th after school.

"I wonder what Hamai-san wants me to do..." He thought. he went closer to the iron gates to see the beautiful pianist there.

"Ah. Shimizu-kun." She opened the gates and he stepped in, giving her a short bow.

"Thank you for inviting me here." She laughed.

"It was no problem, Shimizu-kun. Now me just have to wait for the rest to come and we can start." She led him to the living room. He sat down on the couch as she went off to get him some tea, smiling.

"Others? Maybe...Hino-senpai?" he wondered as he looked around.

[this is my first Hino post, so hopefully it'll be okay! apologies in advance for its shortness]

Kahoko took a deep breath as she stared up at the large, elegant house in front of her.
Well, this is Tsukimori-kun's house. I hope I'm not late. I came straight from school. She bit her lower lip, wondering if Tsukimori-kun would be home. I haven't seen him since the concours... him or any of the others. She shifted her backpack firmly onto her shoulders before stepping toward the iron gates at the front of the house. Hamai Misa stood there, greeting Kahoko with a gentle smile.

"Ah, Hino, so glad you could make it!"

"I'm honored to be invited," she replied truthfully, still a bit in awe of Tsukimori's beautiful and talented mother.

The pianist ushered her in the door.

"Why don't you sit down and get caught up?"

"Caught up...?" Kahoko looked around the room and saw a familiar blond head bowed over a cup of tea. His appearance here both surprised and pleased her. "Shimizu-kun!" A smile broke across her face as she sat down across the table from the sleepy kouhai. "You were invited too?"

Shouko stood before the imposing Tsukimori family gates, holding the little invitation card before her. She checked the address about a dozen times, comparing the house number to the one on the card - there was possibly nothing worse than trying to gain entrance into the wrong house.

But for some reason, Shouko could not work up the courage to press the intercom button. Her finger would hover about an inch from the button before faltering and falling back to her side. Why was this so hard? Why had she even been invited? Shouko could not fathom why the infamous Tsukimori Len would want her at his house. They had barely talked. In truth, he scared her a great deal, even more tha Tsuchiura-senpai did.

Then, Shouko remembered how her father reacted when he saw Hamai Misa's signature in the card. As a great fan of all things artistic, he claimed to be one of her biggest fans.

"Shouko! You must go and get her autograph for me!" he had said with excitement. At that point, Shouko knew there was no denying him, and so she agreed to go.

And now she stood before the gates in a light blue and white skirt, her school uniform folded away in her school bag (her father wanted to ensure she looked her best for the world-famous pianist, not so much for Tsukimori Len...) But how to approach this situation without embarrassing herself?

Shouko sighed.

"Ah! Could you be Fuyuumi Shouko-san?"

Shouko suddenly looked up at the soft voice that had spoken. Hamai Misa approached the gates and opened them just wide enough for Shouko to enter. Shouko could feel her face go red but she did her best to squash down her instinct to run and instead bowed politely.

"Y-yes...My name is Fuyuumi Shouko. It's such an honour to be here for Tsukimori-senpai's birthday," she managed to say. Barely.

Misa smiled softly and nodded her head. "It's my pleasure. Now, why don't you come inside. Some of your friends have already arrived."

"I...I hope I'm not late..."

Misa laughed lightly before replying, "No, no, you have no need to worry, Fuyuumi-chan. Here, come inside."

So Shouko allowed herself to be led into the large house, which was perhaps almost as large as her own family estate. After slipping off her shoes, she followed Misa into what looked like a very comfortable living room.

"Ah! Shimizu-kun! Kaho-senpai! Ah...umm...good afternoon!" she stammered, bowing a little. "It's good to see both of you again, especially you, Kaho-senpai. Now that the concours are over...I - I guess classes prevent us from seeing much of each other. Not that I'm not glad to see you too, Shimizu-kun!" Shouko added.

"Onii-san, there's a letter for you!"

Ryotarou glanced up from his breakfast and received a white envelope from his younger brother. His name and address were written neatly on the envelope, but he couldn't make out who the neat handwriting belonged to. "Who is it from?" His sister asked suspiciously while sipping a cup of tea. Ryotarou shrugged and ripped the envelope open. It was probably just an advertising brochure for sporting goods. Slowly, he unfolded the letter and briefly skimmed through it before he suddenly let out a surprised yelp.

Ryotarou's hands were shaking and his face felt somehow hot. He had never expected to hold a letter from Hamai Misa in his hands one day.

"Why would she…?" Hastily, he began to read through the letter in painstaking detail. His elated mood flattened a bit when he realized that Hamai Misa's was planning a birthday party for that unbearable son of hers in a hot spring resort. Did she truly believe him to be a friend of Tsukimori? Little did she know…

"Okaa-san, Otou-san, is it okay for me to be away next Saturday? One of my, er…friends…" -Ryotarou almost choked on his food the moment he heard himself referring to Tsukimori as his friend– "is going to have a birthday party in the hot springs resort."
Hino and the others would be going to the hot springs as well. He didn't want to be the only one left out and besides, this was an invitation sent by Hamai Misa! 'It is only natural for me to accept…'

"Is that so? Of course you may go! A hot spring resort, you say? Geez, that friend must be a very generous one. Make sure you don't cause your hosts any trouble."

*~*

There was no going back anymore. Ryotarou took a deep breath, placed his carpetbag in front of the Tsukimori family gates and rang the doorbell. Rrrriiing –
A few minutes passed, no one answered the door. 'That’s right. I wonder what Tsukimori thinks about his mother's idea. He doesn't resemble a party freak.' Ryotarou imagined how the reserved violinist was going to pass his time in a hot spring resort.

Tsukimori in a bath robe playing ping pong with everyone? Ridiculous.
Tsukimori eating dinner with everyone? Unthinkable.
Tsukimori sharing a room with the other boys? Out of the question…

"Ah, Tsuchiura-kun, welcome!"
"Go-gokigenyo* and th-thanks for the invite, Hamai-san!" Ryotarou blurted out, bending his head and waist about 90 degrees in front of the famous pianist. Tsukimori's mother smiled and asked the blushing boy to come in. "Thanks for coming, Tsuchiura-kun. Some of your friends have already arrived." She led him to the living room where Shimizu, Hino and Fuyuumi were already seated. Ryotarou waved awkwardly at his friends and joined them.

"Would you like some tea?"

Keiichi heard Misa's voice as she came back into the room. When had she left? He wondered.

"Shimizu-kun! You were invited too!" That voice...

He looked up to see Hino Kahoko smiling at him.

"Hino-senpai...It's nice to see you again...Are you well?" He asked, moving over to give her space to sit on the couch, but she sat opposite him. He felt a slight twinge in his heart.

"Ah! Shimizu-kun! Kaho-senpai! Ah...umm...good afternoon!" He turned his head. Fuyuumi Shouko, blushing like mad, stood there. "It's good to see both of you again, especially you, Kaho-senpai. Now that the concours are over...I - I guess classes prevent us from seeing much of each other. Not that I'm not glad to see you too, Shimizu-kun!"

"Likewise...Fuyuumi-san." He patted the seat next to him, inviting her to sit.

"Who do you think will arrive next...Hino-senpai?" He asked before Tsuchiura Ryoutarou came in through the door, looking distinctly uncomfortable. Keiichi remembered that Tsuchiura and Tsukimori used to fight a lot suring the concours.

"It's nice to see you...Tsuchiura-senpai."

Kahoko's eyes widened, noticing Fuyuumi's appearance. Shimizu-kun was still speaking, and so was the girl who'd just arrived. She had to reply to both their questions... let's see...
"I've been well, Shimizu-kun. I think I'm improving with my violin, slowly but surely. Thank you for asking. I hope you've been well also?" She turned quickly to address the other girl.
"Fuyuumi-chan! You look so pretty! It's such a shame we're in different sections of the school. I've missed seeing you." Kahoko looked down at her lap, momentarily saddened by the thought that she would probably continue to drift apart from her new friends without an excuse to see them on a regular basis. It was selfish of her, but she sometimes wished that the concours could have continued forever, so that she would never have to be parted from them or their music.

"Who do you think will arrive next... Hino-senpai?" Shimizu's voice drew her out of her reverie.

"I don't know," she answered, "but I'll bet that Hihara-senpai will probably rush through the door at the very last minute."

She looked over to see Fuyuumi hiding a shy smile behind her hand.

"I'm not sure I ever got the chance to tell you," she began slowly, "but I was so happy listening to your performances in the last selection. You seemed so confident, Fuyuumi-chan, and Shimizu-kun, your baroque cello- I felt like I was bathed in warm sunshine." Kahoko gazed at the two younger musicians, feeling oddly proud of all they'd accomplished on their behalf, even though she knew she couldn't take credit for it (nor would she want to).

Thankfully, before she could say anything else too candid to embarrass them, Tsuchiura Ryotaro walked into the room, saving her from further running her mouth. Kahoko stood up quickly to greet him.
"Tsuchiura-kun! I was just thinking about the last time we were here... of course, that was because of Hihara-senpai's big appetite-" She trailed off, rubbing her neck with one hand, recalling the awkwardness of that situation. Kahoko could feel heat rising in her cheeks and hoped the others wouldn't notice. To cover her blush, she reached for the teapot and asked brightly, "who wants more tea?"

Note: Since we haven't been able to get in touch with Golden, our Hihara roleplayer, I took the liberty to bring Hihara with me... er, I mean, with Yunoki. I'll edit this post as necessary once Golden gets back ^^~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Opening the letter that was neatly addressed to him, Yunoki Azuma immediately confirmed his thought: this was yet another invitation letter from Tsukimori's mother, Hamai Misa.
What's it this time again? Isn't she currently on a break?
Judging from previous experience, the other concour participants must have been invited as well - including that person, of course. It just didn't make sense for that famous pianist to invite him alone... the elegant boy wasn't her fan or anything; he wasn't particularly close to Tsukimori either. Unless... no, that was even more impossible.
Thinking about it, it has been quite a long while since their last meeting; it was difficult enough to meet General Ed students within the Music Department, let alone someone from a different school year. Glancing quickly through the nicely-written words, his pretty facial features soon turned into a meaningful smile.
Hmm... Sounds interesting isn't it...
[へえー 面白そうじゃないか...]
Though it would be another tedious job to convince his stubborn grandmother for her approval to spend a night at an onsen resort of all places on earth...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Finally.

The last lesson has surely dragged on longer than anyone expected, for it was now at least 15 minutes since the bell has last rung. Today was the day they, the ex-concour participants, were all supposed to meet in Tsukimori's house... everyone but Tsukimori himself, to be exact.

Vaguely anticipating as to how the day would possibly turn out, Yunoki Azuma offered his apparent best friend a ride to their destination. Travelling by car was definately going to be faster than travelling on foot; any sane person would know which choice was a better one.

"Hihara, we'll be late if we don't hurry." [火原、早くしないと遅刻するよ?]

With his dazzling-as-usual smile, the flautist softly reminded his apparent best friend. Together, they headed towards the usual place where Yunoki's personal driver would be waiting.

Soon, the two third-years has arrived in front of the address as written on the invitation letter.

Hearing the sound of a car stopping outside her house, Hamai Misa knew it must be Yunoki - possibly with his classmate Hihara. "Welcome, Yunoki and Hihara. Come in, I'm sure they're all glad to see the both of you!" said Misa, as she walked out to welcome the two newcomers in.

"Ohayougozaimasu, Hamai-san." Yunoki greeted the famous pianist with a light bow and continued in a formal way, "thank you for inviting us over today and sorry for arriving late."

Stepping into the Tsukimori household, the pretty boy said in a polite manner...

"Ojyamashimasu."*

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*Ojyamashimasu: it's a phrase used when entering other's house, literally translated as "excuse me for disturbing you" ^^~
Kazuki stood next to Yunoki's car and stared up at the home of Tsukimori Len. He easily remembered coming here from before, the time he had looked at a few photos of Tsukimori when he was a child. Kahoko had been there at that time and Kazuki sorely hoped that the red-headed violinist would be here today. If both he and Yunoki received invitations from Hamai Misa then it stood to reason, in Kazuki's thinking, that Hino Kahoko would have also received an similar invitation.
A look of excitement was already on Kazuki's face, and it intensified as he realized Hino might already be inside. It never crossed his mind that she would have declined to show up.
"Welcome, Yunoki and Hihara. Come in, I'm sure they're all glad to see the both of you!"
The sound of Hamai Misa's voice surprised Kazuki. Lost in his own thoughts he had failed to notice the famed pianist's approach. With luck he managed not to jump too badly. He greeted the woman with one of his signature honest smiles and moved closer to the house. "Thank you for inviting us," Kazuki spoke in a happy rush. "This will be fun!"
He followed Yunoki into the house, his expression one mixed with an almost childlike excitement and awe at being in the presence of musical talent like Hamai Misa. "I wonder what Tsukimori will think about all of this," he said to Yunoki, but his attention was grabbed by the sight of Hino Kahoko.
"Ah! Kaho-chan! It's good to see you again. How have you been?" his voice was loud and he hurried toward Kahoko, forgetting what he had said to Yunoki.
edited to fix Shouko's family name (sorry about that) and remove others' reactions (again, sorry, I know for next time now)
"Kaho-chan! It's good to see you again! How have you been?"
As if her thoughts of Hihara from the last time she'd been to Tsukimori's house had called him here, the cheerful senior bounded through the door, greeting her with his customary smile. Kahoko looked up from refilling everyone's teacups to realize that both he and Yunoki had finally arrived. Gazing around, she saw that Tsuchiura-kun was still fidgeting awkwardly in the room as if he feared his presence would somehow disrupt the home of his favorite musician.
He's probably afraid to sit down, Kahoko thought with a smile. Hey, everybody's here together. Now the planning for Tsukimori-kun's party can begin.
"Hihara-senpai, you made it!" Kahoko waved at him and shot a glance at Fuyuumi-chan, sharing a conspiratorial look about her previous comment regarding the senior's penchant for tardiness.
"I'm so glad. I got excited just thinking about seeing everyone. Have a seat!" She made room next to her on the couch in case Hihara wanted to sit down.
"And you too of course, Yunoki-senpai," she added hastily, unwilling to provoke the mercurial moods of the dangerous senpai. Turning back to the rapidly-approaching Hihara, she commented,
"I haven't chatted with you in so long, how have you been holding up?"
[poetry-san, just a note: Shouko's family name is spelled Fuyuumi, not Fyuumi ^^ Also, be careful when you write about others' reactions - for example, it was never said Shimizu and Fuyuumi were conversing together or anything. Just thought I'd let you know for the future.]
Shouko allowed herself a rare smile of gratitude at Kaho-senpai's compliment on her last concours performance as she took a seat beside Shimizu-kun at his invitation. Although she never told anyone, she was quite proud of it. She hoped that she could continue playing like that in the future, but it was almost as if she had set the bar for herself so high that it was nearly impossible to reach. Shouko inwardly sighed. She'd have to practice much more and gain more on-stage experience if she were to ever reach the level the others were at.
"Thank you, Kaho-senpai," she murmured, gratefully accepting more tea from her red-headed senior.
But before anything more could be said, the spacious Tsukimori living room seemed much more cramped for space once the three upperclassmen arrived (with Hihara-senpai running in last, just as Kaho-senpai had predicted - Shouko thought of this with some humour but kept herself from laughing aloud for fear of offending Hihara-senpai or embarrassing Kaho-senpai). Shouko attempted a half-nod, half-bow from her seat, a silent greeting to all three senpai. Since there were so many people in the room, Shouko found herself unable to interrupt the current conversation, so she simply sipped at her tea and waited, listening to what everyone had to say.
______________________________________
After entering the room, Ryotarou took a seat on a nearby armchair and listened with half an ear to his fellow musicians. His carpetbag was lying next to his armchair, it was packed with supplies for the trip but also contained a birthday gift for Tsukimori. Ryotarou was frustrated whenever he remembered the gift in his bag; he had never thought that he would voluntarily hand over a present to Tsukimori. But it was a courtesy to give your host a present, especially when it was your host's birthday.
Two days ago, Ryotarou had searched several shops for an appropriate present. It had not been easy for him to decide on a gift, since he knew less than nothing about the recipient's hobbies and preferences (he had always had the impression that Tsukimori had no other interests apart from playing the violin and looking down on others). After hours of desperate searching, Ryotarou finally asked the old shop owner for advice. "He's a talented violinist, isn't he? Then I would suggest a record of Jascha Heifetz. Every violinist adores him."
Trusting his jii-san's* advice, Ryotarou had thus ended up buying a record of Heifetz and had even gone through the trouble of wrapping it up on his own.
While he sat in his armchair, he pondered about what to do if Tsukimori already possessed such a record. 'If that's the case', he told himself, 'there'll no need for me to feel bad. I've already fulfilled my duty and don't owe him anything.'
"Tsuchiura-kun! I was just thinking about the last time we were here... of course, that was because of Hihara-senpai's big appetite-"
Distracted by Hino's comment, Ryotarou looked up from his carpetbag and turned his face to the small group. It was a peculiar feeling to be sitting together with the ex-concours-participants again. It felt somehow nostalgic. "I remember that," he began, grinning broadly when he remembered Hihara-senpai devouring one cake after another, "I always wanted to know the secret behind senpai's gigantic app-"
"Ah! Kaho-chan! It's good to see you again. How have you been?"
'Speak of the devil. There he is, Hihara-senpai…' Tsuchiura took his cup of tea and decided not to disturb Hihara-senpai's and Hino's reunion. It was chamomile tea.
"Who do you think will arrive next... Hino-senpai?" Keiichi asked.
"I don't know, but I'll bet that Hihara-senpai will probably rush through the door at the very last minute." He smiled. Indeed, that would be most like Hihara-senpai. He noted that Fuyuumi had taken the seat next to him, and that she was hiding her smile with her hand.
Hino started to speak and Keiichi paid her his full attention.
"I'm not sure I ever got the chance to tell you, but I was so happy listening to your performances in the last selection. You seemed so confident, Fuyuumi-chan, and Shimizu-kun, your baroque cello- I felt like I was bathed in warm sunshine." Hino said and Keiichi felt a sense of pride. To have his playing praised by his senpai...was truly something.
After Hino had spoken, Tsuchiura entered, followed soon after by Yunoki.
"Ah! Kaho-chan! It's good to see you again. How have you been?" And of course, Hihara-senpai. Keiichi stifled a laugh. Hino's prediction was accurate.
"It's so good to see all of you again!" He turned to see Misa standing in the doorway.
"Please take a seat, Hihara-kun, Yunoki-kun." She gestured towards the third sofa.
"Now, let's begin planning Len's birthday, shall we?" She sat down, beaming in excitement.
"Ojamashimasu,*" Yunoki Azuma said politely to nobody in particular and followed the pretty host into the living room (not as pretty as I am though, Yunoki decided). Just upon reaching the room, Hihara's comment could be heard from behind - judging by the tone of his voice, he has surely gotten all excited again. That was just so characteristic of him.
"I wonder what Tsukimori will think about all of this."
"Well..." [そうだね...] Before the pretty flautist had a chance to reply properly, however, it was pretty obvious that the energetic third-year got once again distracted by the sight of a particular someone and has forgotten about him. While it was one thing for him to deflect the question tactfully so as to avoid answering it directly, it was a totally different matter to be forcefully deprived of the right to answer it... or so Yunoki reasoned. Well, being apparent best friends with Hihara for nearly three years, the elegant boy should have known more clearly than anyone else that this was yet another characteristic of the taller third-year^1; he should have gotten used to it by now as well. So why? Why did he feel so angry all of a sudden?
... [<-- that's supposed to be italicised]
With his inner feelings well hidden under his usual Perfect Senpai mask, Yunoki Azuma took a brief glance into the populated living room; they, the ex-concour participants, were all gathering here once again. All but one, to be exact... not that he cared much though. Walking towards the sofas, the long-haired third-year greeted everyone else with an elegant smile in their direction, accompained with a graceful "ohayou".
"And you too of course, Yunoki-senpai."
There came the "invitation" from the violinist, though the flautist knew better that it was nothing genuine. Deciding not to disturb the sweet little reunion of Hihara and Hino for the time being (the best enjoyment always come last anyway, Yunoki reminded himself), Yunoki gave her a meaningful look that would look innocent to anyone else and expressed a word of thanks (ありがとう、日野さん^2) before stopping in front of the tea table placed in between the sofas. Actually he might very well have seated right next to Hino if the host hasn't hinted them where to seat; it was already amusing just to imagine how she would react to that action of his. Oh well...
Placing on the tea table a box of deluxe Japanese confectionery, Yunoki Azuma apologised to everyone about his lateless (授業を遅くなってしまって、ごめんね^3) and said, "here, it's a present**." [はい、お土産です。]
"Now, let's begin planning Len's birthday, shall we?" The host Hamai Misa announced, not forgetting to convey her gratitude for the nice present.
Rising up, Yunoki Azuma sat on the sofas as hinted by the host earlier - and ended up sitting right opposite to Hino by chance. Or was that fate afterall? Turning his obvious attention as to what the host had to say from now on, the flautist left part of his subtle attention to enjoy whatever entertainment the violinist were to give him.
Saa...
* That's just a continuation from my previous post, not that Yunoki said that phrase twice or anything XD
^1 Just in case anyone isn't aware, Hihara is taller than Yunoki by 6 cm XD
^2 Translated as "Thank you, Hino-san".
^3 Translated as something like "Lesson got delayed, I'm sorry".
** Well, it's a bit difficult to explain the concept of "omiyage", but it's considered a courtesy to bring some sort of gift when you're visiting someone's home. I figured if anyone is gonna be perfect with the courtesy stuff, it'd be Yunoki XD
Kahoko felt her whole body go tense as Yunoki sat directly across from her. He was far too close for comfort as far as she was concerned, and she was wary of the look in his eyes- or perhaps she was imagining it?
Surely he wouldn’t- not in front of all these people- no, he has to be the perfect senior while he’s here, and he wouldn’t embarrass me that way. She crossed her legs and straightened her skirt with nervous precision, looking with ill-disguised longing at the other couch where Fuyuumi and Shimizu sat.
When I told him to sit down, it wasn’t really an invitation…couldn’t you have been a little quicker, Hihara-senpai? She sighed, sparing a nervous glance for the poised senior across from her. That’s an uncharitable thought. Give Yunoki-senpai a chance.
“What can we do to help you, Hamai-san?” Thus resolved, she spoke up, dismissing her worries. “Speaking for myself, Tsukimori-kun has motivated me to commit myself further in my pursuit of music. He’s really an inspiring performer, and it’s so rare that I could have a chance to do something for him in return. It’s wonderful that we can be here to celebrate with him on this day! Thank you for the opportunity, Hamai-san.”
Even if he doesn’t quite see it that way… Kahoko wondered just what the uptight violinist would do at a surprise party. She’d found that buying Tsukimori a gift had been a difficult endeavor, but she hoped that her gifts were both practical and meaningful. She’d bought him professional-grade light cake rosin for his violin with silver flecks in it. The music store owner had advised her that such a metal enhanced tone quality, producing a clearer, concentrated and bright tone. Unlike Kahoko’s own student-grade rosin, when she’d tested it out in the shop, the tone of her playing had indeed sounded brighter with the more expensive rosin, and she hoped it would be useful to the other violinist. That hadn't felt like enough, however, especially in light of everything Tsukimori-kun had taught her about her violin and how to cherish it.
Therefore, for a more thoughtful gift, she’d enlisted Amou’s help to sort through the journalist’s candid pictures taken during the concours to find one to frame and attached a note to it that read “sorry about prying into your pictures last time- please accept this as compensation”. Amou had truly captured Tsukimori-kun’s dedication to his music in the photograph, and while Kahoko suspected he might be embarrassed at first to see himself, she hoped he would appreciate the gesture nonetheless. His expression in that moment was one of intense concentration tempered by a ghost of a smile as he closed his eyes and played. His normally-furrowed brow was unlined and his face looked oddly relaxed, despite his focus. Kahoko wondered what thought had made him smile. She cast her mind back to sitting on the floor with Amou-chan sorting out photos and couldn’t help but roll her eyes. The nosy journalist had informed her that Kahoko would be obligated to give an interview the next time Amou needed one. She’d also pried again into Kaho’s nonexistent love life.
“Eh?” Kaho had said, staring at the other girl in surprise.
“Who’s it going to be with?”
“Who’s what going to be with?” Kaho had repeated blankly.
“You know, the‘ violin romance’? Surely you’ve come to a conclusion as to who you like best.” Amou had nudged her and winked.
“Oh, I don’t- they don’t think of me in that way- it’s not like that-” She’d stammered, waving her hands in protestation. Amou had given her a knowing look.
“Hmm. Well, when you make up your mind, promise me I’ll be the first one to know about it.” Kaho had just sighed and nodded, not seeing that she had much choice in the matter.
Crazy girl,
she thought now, none of the participants see me like that, surely. I would have noticed something like that. I couldn't miss it. Right? I wonder if I should pay closer attention to them in future... but then I don't want to be one of those girls who analyzes everything a boy says and tries to find hidden meaning in it when really all he said was "do you want some of my katsu-sando..."
Kahoko sighed, focusing her attention back on Tsukimori’s mother with some difficulty.
