Character Description

Image
(I did not draw this wonderful picture, but don't know who the artist is, either, so credit goes to whoever drew it!)

Taro's (natural) outer appearance is very unspectacular. He stands at 1.78m which is quite tall for Japanese men but his skinny figure and his self-conscious gait make him appear as a rather weakly boy. Taro has short black, untidy hair which he didn't even try to comb until he entered high school. He wears a pair of black-rimmed glasses behind which he hides his most striking feature, the eyes. His eyes have a pastel green colour and are sprinkled with specks of grey, emanating a melancholic placidity.

After entering Seiso, Taro began to change his behaviour and appearance, for more information please continue to read XD

Taro grew up in an ordinary Japanese family and is an only child. He was a very shy boy and was sometimes taunted by older boys at elementary school. His obsession for books and his taciturnity kept him from socialising with other kids – instead of playing baseball with his school mates he preferred to read a good book. Worried about their son’s introverted personality, Taro's parents decided to take action and sent him to several sports clubs. There Taro learned to open up a bit and made a few friends, but he still remained a nerdy bookworm. During his time at middle school however, Taro started to discover the joys of music. Taro, who enjoyed writing poems and short texts, noticed that there were feelings and sentiments which words could not describe. After listening to a classmate play Chopin's Nocturne No.1 for the first time in his life, Taro decided to learn the piano and henceforth started to compose pieces himself - pieces which he unfortunately never showed to anyone else. On the last day of middle school, Taro finally plucked up the courage to confess to the girl – a classmate of his' – he had secretly admired for the last two years. The girl however, rejected him, with the explanation that he was "boring". And even though Taro pretended to be over the rejection, the experience still left a scar on his self-esteem.

At his new school, Seiso Academy, Taro decided to start anew, to throw away his bookworm-image and entered the general education department. In spite of his parents' advice, he decided not to enter the music department because he thought that his interest in music was uncool. Instead, he joined the soccer team and befriended some of his popular teammates. Taro avoids talking about things which might be considered "boring", sometimes lying to make himself more "interesting" and pretending to be someone who doesn't care about anything but having fun in life. He also changed his appearance, started to gel his hair everyday and even wanted to replace his glasses with contact lenses until he found out that he was allergic to them (it was a painful experience). With his new appearance, the formerly shy boy also started to go after girls, becoming the school's notorious womanizer as a way to prove to himself that he is not boring like his middle school classmate had told him. Unfortunately, he never dared to start a serious relationship with anyone because deep down, he still knows that there are things he can't change about himself (there are times when his old shy/boring personality unintentionally surfaces). Taro can be quite narcissistic at times, too, but he is overall very dependant on the opinion others have on him and tries his best to please everyone.

Katagiri Akari (mother) & Katagiri Takaki (father)
Both care very much about Taro, but might have been a little bit too overprotective of their son when he was little. By the time they realized that little Taro had become a homebody, disinclined to meeting new people, they tried their best to "push him out into the real world". They were worried about Taro's new high school at first, unsure whether he'd be able to adjust to the new environment, but were more than happy when they found out that Taro had found new friends at Seiso. However, Akari sometimes scolds him for being too careless with girls.

Izumi Ran
Ran and Taro have been classmates since middle school. Because of Ran's shy nature, flirty Taro did not notice her for a very long time and only recognized her as the class president. In "Rondo in Class 2-4" Taro tries to avoid the teacher's punishment by asking Ran for help, but his sweet-talk (un-)fortunately has no effect on her. This incident arouses his interest in Ran and he begins to woo and flirt with her whenever he has the chance to.

Takehara Suzume
Takehara Suzume is probably the only girl Taro considers as his rival. She is a friend of Ran and always tries to protect her, which of course, irritates Taro because Suzume's interference ruins his plans. He mockingly calls her "Suzu-chin" and often argues with her.

Mori Manami
Mori is an old childhood friend of Taro and the only girl he does not flirt with. In "Merry Minuet", it is described how she saved him from school bullies at elementary school, an incident which sealed their friendship.

Kasahara Akemi
Taro was secretly in love with Akemi during middle school. Akemi is a pretty, popular girl, who used to be a member of the school's swimming team. Back then, Taro regularly went to see her swimming competitions; he always sat in the front row so that he could ogle at her. Akemi's rejection caused Taro to undergo a drastic personality change and it is still unclear whether he is completely over her or not.

Relationships you are planning to establish
Uhhh no plans yet. Need to wait and see how our cast will look like. But I would be happy if someone could accidentally discover his old compositions from middle school days - Taro's gonna die of embarrassment XD Taro neglected music and everything he used to like, which is why I hope that a fated girl will find out his secret & reintroduce music into his life XD

Other
I actually wanted to call him Yamada Taro, because it is the Japanese version of John Doe. The name was supposed to refer to his formerly unspectacular personality, but since we’ve already had a Yamada in our old cast, I thought it might confuse everyone. That’s why I came up with Katagiri ("Deep Appreciation") and kept the common, somewhat boring first name Taro.

Sample RP (>=10 lines):

"I am sorry, Katagiri-kun", she said with a helpless smile on her lips, staring at the ground so that she could avoid looking at the skinny bespectacled boy in front of her. Not knowing what to reply, Taro stared at the ground, too, with an absent-minded look on his face. The two of them were standing on the school's rooftop. "You're really nice and intelligent, but you're too…boring. I am truly sorry, Katagiri-kun."

Taro's glasses slid down his nose as he tried to absorb the words he had just heard. He wished for something –anything- to happen; something which could distract him from his own embarrassment. Taro was forced willy-nilly to break the silence. Laughing quietly, he shrugged his shoulders as if he was already used to rejections and said, "I kind of expected this…thanks for listening to me today and…good luck at your new high school."

The girl hadn't flung herself into the hero's arms like Taro had read in so many books. Instead she had made him realize the discrepancy between wishful thinking and "boring" reality. Nodding thankfully at him, she walked down the steps which led back into the school building. Taro, however, stared after her until his sight became blurred and dull.

Katagiri Taro's spring ended on his last day of middle school.

*****
Elegy by Katagiri Taro

A dreamy heart was pounding
Within that boyish chest
So full with hope and pining
It never came to rest

The throbbing heart, it came to you
It hoped you would accept it
But learned that it was wrong to woo
For it was boringly stupid!
