Name, Age: Kotoko, 20 Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: Piano (took lessons for 12 years and it's been ~3 years since I finished); clarinet (played in high school for 3.5 years) Do you have any RPing experiences? Yep. I've been RPing for about 3 years now. How often will you be able to role-play?: Not sure yet. Hopefully 1-2 times a week, but no promises. Character Name: Takehara Suzume (Bah, I had the kanji here but it won't format right on the forum. Sorry!) General Education Department or Music Department? Which year?: Gen Ed Department, 2nd year (16-years-old) Does your character play an instrument? If yes, which one and how well does your character play it ("ability level")?: Alto saxophone (5 years of experience; intermediate), piano (2 years of experience; beginner-intermediate) Character Description - Please keep in mind that you are allowed to add as much detail as you want to your character Stats Full name: Takehara Suzume (take = bamboo; hara = field; suzume = sparrow) Nicknames: Suzu-chan Date of birth: August 23 (16 years old) Blood Type: B Height: 5'3 Weight: 128 lbs. Hair: Black Eyes: Green Physical Appearance Suzume is known to be quite the natural beauty. She stands at a decent 5'3 and possesses a slim, lithe figure, which she maintains through daily jogs at dawn. Moreover, she inherited her mother's heart-shaped face and pure onyx, straight hair, which she wears down to her hips in a hime cut (think Ichihara Yuuko from xxxHOLiC), and from her father, she inherited her almond-shaped, bright green eyes. She loves the outdoors and doesn't mind walking to and from school, so as a result, her skin is lightly tanned. Suzume is somewhat vain so she takes good care of her body to maintain her appearance, and she loves experimenting with clothes, accessories, and make-up. Personality Suzume's personality can simply be described as the hopeless romantic. After having experienced the divorce of her parents as well as the happy, "normal" family of her aunt and uncle, Suzume wants to raise a good and steady family with a good (preferably good-looking) husband when she finishes with school. She no longer wants to be part of a broken family like her own. Consequently, Suzume is constantly looking for a perfect guy to help her realize that dream, but as a result, she ends up misjudging boys' characters. When she meets a guy she thinks she likes, she only sees their good aspects and immediately begins dreaming about getting married and raising a family together. It isn't until later that she realizes their bad aspects and, finally seeing that they're imperfect, she falls out of love and rejects them to find another guy. It also doesn't help that she watches a lot of romance movies and reads romance novels in her spare time. Suzume is also a bit of an optimistic dreamer like her mother. On top of raising a family, she also wishes to have a successful career (although, she's unsure of what she wants to do and her goals seem to change every week or so (she's someone who is good at everything but doesn't excel at anything). However, she has the distinct belief that if she works hard enough, everything will work out in the end somehow, like pieces of a puzzle automatically falling into place. As a result, her plans (if she even has one) often end up being unrealistic, or if they are realistic, she doesn't follow through with them properly to reach her goal. Despite these faults, Suzume is a bright and enthusiastic girl, even a bit of a social butterfly. She enjoys meeting new people and making friends (and new guy friends, especially), and she's a bit of a chatterbox. Furthermore, once her trust has been properly earned, Suzume can be incredibly loyal and will often go out of her way to help out those she cares about, even if it means forgetting about her own needs for a time. History Suzume was born to Takehara Yoshihiko and Tsubaki, a healthy baby girl and as normal as can be. For the first eight years of her life, she lived happily, though blissfully ignorant of the troubles her parents went through at the time. Yoshihiko, her father, did not like settling down and living a stable life. He was never satisfied with his jobs and was always changing, thus never gaining seniority in any one place. This also meant the household income was never stable and always fluctuating, especially since Tsubaki, her mother, only worked part-time as an assistant cook at a restaurant. Yoshihiko's unreliable ways frustrated his wife to no end, ultimately causing their separation when Suzume was just a few months shy of her ninth birthday. For a time, Suzume alternated between living with her father and living with her mother, and even though she appeared fine with it on the outside, deep down, she grew tired of the constant travels across the city and living out of a suitcase. And even further down, Suzume was emotionally hurt. Moreover, it steadily became clear that while her parents were good people and cared deeply for her, they lacked the proper parenting skills to raise her adequately now that they had to do it on their own. The divorce between her parents was finalized when Suzume was ten-years-old. Worried for Suzume's psychological and emotional health, Tsubaki's older sister, Akayama Chiyoko, offered to take her young niece into her home to give her a more steady family life. Tsubaki and Yoshihiko were reluctant at first but Suzume finally voiced her frustration over her lifestyle, which ultimately convinced her parents to allow it. After all, it wasn't as if her Aunt Chiyoko was a stranger to Suzume. Chiyoko had often visited to babysit and make sure Suzume was raised properly, knowing Tsubaki's dreamy personality (because, really, Tsubaki wasn't all too reliable herself). And Suzume would visit her parents every so often, too, so it wasn't as if she'd never see them again. And so, Suzume moved in with her Aunt Chiyoko, Uncle Hideo, and her three cousins (Shouji, Tetsuya, and little Yukari). Although the added person only made their little home more cramped, they were glad to have her. Their home, by the way, is above their family-owned Japanese sweet shop, Akayama Sweets - a modest and humble store that does well enough to financially support the family, though just barely. Knowing she was imposing on her aunt and uncle, Suzume told them she didn't want to be treated differently and that, like Shouji (and later, Tetsuya when he became old enough), she'd help them maintain the shop in whatever ways she could (such as cleaning or making sure the shelves and displays were organized, and later advancing to managing the cash register and handling customer service). Because the shop was small, her Uncle Hideo only employed a few staff outside of their family, but they were mostly adults much older than Suzume. However, when she was fourteen, one of the staff members quit since her husband was being transferred to another city, so her uncle hired a girl, who was surprisingly the same age as Suzume. Her name was Koizumi Yuuki, and she was quiet but very responsible and kind. After some time, the two became friends working in the shop. Suzume discovered that Yuuki enjoyed playing the cello, but found it difficult to keep up with it due to her lack of money, and later, found out that Yuuki wished to attend Seiso Academy as a student of its prestigious music program. Suzume, outraged at the injustice of the world, continually encouraged Yuuki to keep practicing to get better and better, even to go as far as making up practice schedules for her. It was then that Suzume became determined to also attend Seiso. She auditioned but her saxophone skills were not quite proficient enough to compete with the others, and her style leaned more towards jazz than Classical. Thus, she was offered a spot in the general education department instead, which, while disappointed, she accepted as the next best thing. After all, she could still support and encourage her friend from the general education department, right? Family Akayama Hideo (uncle; 48): He owns the Japanese sweet shop, Akayama Sweets, that was originally started by his grandfather (though, it had to be rebuilt after WWII after suffering major damage). He works very hard to maintain the shop passed down to him from his father, and he is a very generous and kind man despite not having a lot of extra money. However, a bad back, which worsens as he ages, has forced him to reduce some of the more labour-intensive work for the sake of his health. He also has a tendency to make bad jokes, which his children often tease him for. Despite not being blood relatives, Suzume is quite close to him and is extremely grateful for being taken in by him. Akayama Chiyoko (aunt; 44): She is Suzume's maternal aunt by blood. She occasionally works as an elementary school substitute teacher for the extra money, but otherwise helps out her husband in the shop. She's very good with math and so handles a lot of the financial aspects of the family business. However, she is also very concerned about money and so cuts out and collects coupons, which she sticks onto the fridge in the kitchen. She also happens to be a bit of a worrywart, causing her to be a bit overprotective over her children and Suzume. Suzume sometimes bickers with her aunt over this, but they really do care for each other. Akayama Shouji (cousin, 19): Since he was young, Shouji was brought up with the idea that he would inherit the sweet shop from his father, but when he entered high school, he began to dream of moving to America and finding a different job there. He hasn't told his parents about this yet, having only told Suzume. He currently attends university, studying business, which usually keeps him away from home. Prior to going off to school, however, he and Suzume were fairly close, and he would often accompany her saxophone on the piano. Akayama Tetsuya (cousin, 14): He's the jokester and prankster of the family, and if he applied himself more to school than video games, he might manage to make top grades. In terms of personality, he's more like his father, but in terms of appearance, he's more like his mother. He looks up to his older brother Shouji, but loves to tease Suzume and his younger sister Yukari. Suzume thinks of him as a pest and often thwacks him over the head to get back at him, but deep down, she cares about him. Akayama Yukari (cousin, 8): She's the youngest member of the Akayama family, and she's really a sweet, yet shy, girl. Suzume somehow feels protective over her youngest cousin, perhaps because Yukari is the only other girl in the family and often bears the brunt of Tetsuya's teasing. Yukari looks up to Suzume like an older sister. Takehara Yoshihiko (father, 45): He currently works with the Japan Post Service, though he switches jobs often because he is never happy with any of them. This also means he moves every so often, but no matter where he ends up, he makes sure to send a bit of money and a card to Suzume for her birthday and on New Year's Day and, when he can, he visits her in person. Suzume loves her father but doesn't think of him as a dependable person. Sakamoto Tsubaki (mother, 42): She works as an assistant cook at an Italian restaurant, and she currently lives with her boyfriend, Tanaka Jun, in Tokyo. She visits Suzume about once or twice a month to check-up on her and maybe take her out for lunch or to shop. She hopes to one day live a stable enough life to allow her daughter to live with her again, but Tsubaki, like Suzume, is a bit of a dreamer so that goal may or may not be fulfilled. Friends Koizumi Yuuki: The two girls met when they were both fourteen, when Yuuki was hired by Suzume's uncle to work at Akayama Sweets. As they worked together, they slowly became friends. Suzume very much wants to see Yuuki succeed and perform on a huge stage as a professional, and so she encourages (read: bugs/does whatever it takes) her friend to practice and improve. Moreover, Suzume finds Yuuki's lack of interest in guys to be rather perplexing, so she attempts to hook up her best friend with various guys who she thinks she might like. Katagiri Taro: They're in the same year and class, and Suzume thinks he flirts with girls too easily and therefore doesn't trust him very much. He reminds her of her cousin, Tetsuya, so she doesn't hesitate to reprimand him or defend Izumi Ran from his advances. Still, when she sees his meeker side, she feels the strange need to help him out. Izumi Ran: The shy class president reminds Suzume very much of her younger cousin, Yukari. Suzume does her best to bring Ran out of her shell, but at the same time, she also feels the need to protect Ran from being hurt by Katagiri Taro. Sample RP (>=10 lines): "I'm home!" "You're late!" a voice called out, laced with impatience and annoyance. Suzume entered Akayama Sweets, a little bell chiming her arrival as she opened and closed the door, and sighed, immediately spotting her fourteen-year-old cousin Tetsuya sitting on a stool by the cash register looking very disgruntled indeed, still dressed in his school uniform. Heading to the back room, Suzume quickly dropped off her school bag and returned to the storefront, joining her cousin behind the cash register and ruffling his hair, mussing up his bleached bangs. Grunting a little, Tetsuya batted away her hand, crying out, "Hey! Get offa me!" as he attempted to flatten his hair again. "The girl who's late for her shift shouldn't be so carefree. Where the hell were you?" Suzume gave her cousin one last flick on his head before she laughed, danced away from his flailing arms, and replied, "Hey, don't talk to your oneesan like that! Honestly, you really don't have manners. Anyway, it's not like you were completely alone. I know your mom has a teaching job today, but what about your dad?" "He had to leave as soon as I got here to take over for him. I didn't even have time to change into my yukata," Tetsuya said, taking out a little mirror to ensure his hair was set straight. After patting down a few more strands, he pocketed the mirror and continued, "And you're not my oneesan. How many times have I told you that?" "I'm still family and I'm still older than you," Suzume answered in a sing-song voice as she made her way into the backroom again, finding her little shelf with her name written in tiny kanji on a sticker just below it. There, she removed her uniform - a dark blue yukata with a simple design of pale blue diamonds on the left shoulder and along the hem. The outfit was completed with a dark red obi and a pair of zori. She hastily changed and returned to the storefront, pulling and twisting her long dark hair into a neat bun as she went. Already, Tetsuya seemed to be taking care of a customer - an elderly woman with a lined face and crooked back. "Irrasshaimase!" Suzume chimed automatically as she joined her cousin behind the counter. Tetsuya, in turn, threw her a quick dirty look at her intrusion, as if to say, 'I don't need your help.' Nevertheless, Suzume plastered a polite smile on her face and said, in her fake-polite voice, "Tetsuya-kun, you can go and change into your uniform now. Really, what were you thinking running the shop in your school uniform?" Then, laughing a little, as if embarrassed, she turned to the customer and said, "I apologize. He's a bit slow. Anyway, what can I do for you?" ---------------------------------------------------- Japanese Terms Oneesan = older sister Yukata = a more casual, lighter kimono Zori = a kind of sandal Irrasshaimase = welcome; used in businesses to greet customers Edited by Kotoko, Feb 20 2009, 12:12 AM.
