Roleplayer: Koizumi Yuuki

Name, Age: Yian, 16.

Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: I play the violin (about six years) and the piano/keyboard (about eight years). About the piano/keyboard, I only received lessons for about two years and then just continued to practice on my own.

Do you have any RPing experiences? Yes.

How often will you be able to role-play?: About once a week, and perhaps more during breaks or whenever I find the time. As I am often busy with school, I cannot guarantee a post every week, but I shall try.

Character Name: Koizumi Yuuki (koi = small; izumi = fountain, spring; yuu = gentleness, superiority, goodness; ki = hope).

General Education Department or Music Department? Which year?: Music Department, 2nd year, sixteen years old.

Does your character play an instrument? If yes, which one and how well does your character play it ("ability level")?:

Yuuki shows promising talent on the cello, but her skills can definitely be further polished. More about her cello skills will be elaborated on later.

Character Description - Please keep in mind that you are allowed to add as much detail as you want to your character

Physical Appearance

Yuuki stands at an average height of 165 cm. Being an average Japanese student, she has dark black hair that falls slightly below her shoulders and side-swept bangs which she parts on her right. With rather plain features, light brown eyes and a thin frame, she is not the most spectacular figure to behold. It is generally thought, however, that if she paid more attention to her appearance (such as putting on makeup), she would look quite pretty. Despite having a thin frame, she is quite capable and prides herself on her strong, well-shaped hands, which help her retain more control when playing the cello or when working at various part-time jobs. Her fashion sense is nearly nonexistent as she does not care much about her outer appearance. When not in her school uniform, she prefers to wear anything comfortable and casual, which is why her wardrobe mainly consists of jackets, sweaters, jeans and the like.

Biography

Born into a rather poor family, Yuuki is quite used to hardship. With a father who has bad luck as a freelance writer and always lands the family into some sort of economic hardship, she has learned the importance of taking care of herself. Though her father always has good intentions and wants the best for his family, he never seems to be particularly successful with any of his articles or writings, resulting in an unstable income. Even with a low income, her father has a bad habit of excessively spending on trips around Japan in the hopes of gaining inspiration for his work. Due to her father's poor management of the family's finances, she has become rather distrustful of him, and consequently, of males in general. Her mother thus seems to lead the family because of her husband's lacks, and she helps to support the family by working part-time as a cleaning lady in various facilities.

At the age of six, Yuuki took up the cello at her mother's suggestion. Her mother used to play the cello as well when she was younger, but did not continue to play after the realization that she was not musically inclined whatsoever, despite her deep love of classical music. Feeling that it was a waste to have a perfectly good cello lying at home unused, she hoped that Yuuki would play and hopefully, play well. Yuuki was at first skeptical, but soon grew to love playing the instrument and quickly developed a dream of becoming a professional cellist. In order to pay for proper private lessons, her mother worked overtime at multiple jobs, which unfortunately took a toll on her health. As such, her mother could only provide enough lessons to last her until she was eleven years old. Despite her disappointment at the end of her lessons, Yuuki continued to practice on her own with her mother's assistance for the next three years.

Yuuki had always been grateful for her mother's support, and in order to make up for her mother's hard work, she started working when she turned fourteen in order to save up enough money for tuition costs at Seiso Academy's music program. Due to the fact that Seiso's music program was rigorous and only the best students could get accepted, she worried that her skills were not good enough because she had lacked proper lessons for the past three years. Although she was a nervous wreck on the day of her scheduled audition, she managed to play her audition piece well enough to get accepted. The judges had noticed her rough technique and were considering not letting her through, but eventually decided to allow her as she showed potential. After hearing the judges' comments, Yuuki vowed to work even harder to improve to show that her acceptance into the music program was not a poor decision.

Personality

Given her family situation and need to work, Yuuki has developed a level-headed, collected and responsible demeanor. She does not immediately jump to conclusions or react impulsively, but rather thinks through situations carefully before acting. A diligent student, she does well in school and with the cello because of her dedication and her hard-working habits, not necessarily because she was born intelligent or with talent. As such, she still has a lot of room for growth and improvement with her musical skill. One of her main insecurities is her lack of money, which she considers an impediment in her goal to become a professional musician. She realizes that lessons and supplies are expensive, and she worries that without having enough money to keep up, she will not be able to achieve her goal. She also worries that she does not have enough talent or charisma to be successful as a professional musician, as she is not exceptionally talented. Among all of these worries, she also wonders just what music is to her, how important music is to her, and for what reason she continues to play the cello.

Yuuki is kind and easy enough to get along with, but is a bit reclusive. She is not so cold that she wards people away, but since she's often quiet, people tend to regard her as somewhat mysterious. Always dedicated to whatever she sets her mind on, Yuuki is an excellent worker and passionate in her various undertakings. She is also quite loyal and compassionate towards her good friends. Unlike most girls of her age, however, she has no interest in the opposite gender, which she considers hopelessly immature and unreliable for the most part.

Relationships

FAMILY

Koizumi Makoto: A humble freelance writer, though rather unlucky, Makoto tries his best to be a good father and provide for his family as well as he can. Although he was offered a stable company office job in the past, he turned down the offer to pursue his longtime love of writing. In especially hard times on the family, though, he regrets that he did not accept the offer. While not exactly a music enthusiast, he acknowledges Yuuki's interest in the cello and enjoys listening to her play when he has the time. A mellow and light-hearted individual, he seeks to enjoy life and tries not to be tied down because of his financial status.

Koizumi Michiko: Michiko is essentially an older version of Yuuki in terms of personality and appearance. Though she came from a well-off family before marrying Makoto, she has long since accepted her current arduous lifestyle. Rather than being angry at Makoto for being a liability to the family, Michiko pities him and tries her best to help support his work, though there are times when she is disappointed as well. A lover of classical music, she was delighted when Yuuki decided to play the cello and was even more pleased to see that her daughter had great potential. She is aware of Yuuki's desire to become a professional and helps to support her in any way she can. Overall, it is because of Michiko's kindness and love that the family manages to stay together and function.

Koizumi Yuuto: Yuuki's younger brother by four years and in the seventh grade, Yuuto is still an innocently playful boy who enjoys cracking jokes and poking fun at his older sister. While he is aware that his family is rather poor, he takes advantage of the fact that he is the youngest and does not help out with work if he can avoid it. He is a member of his middle school's baseball team. He and Yuuki are actually rather close siblings, and he secretly admires her for her hard work and musical talent. Yuuki hopes that Yuuto will grow out of his immaturity and become a successful, responsible person rather than a person like their father.

FRIENDS

Takehara Suzume: When Yuuki was fourteen years old and looking for a job, she came across Akayama Sweets, a modest store which happened to be looking for an employee. She was immediately charmed by the warm, homely atmosphere of the store and the kindness of the store's owners, Akayama Hideo and his wife Chiyoko. Soon after she began working, she befriended their niece, Suzume, who she learned had lived with her aunt and uncle after the divorce of her parents. They quickly became very close while working together in the store, and Yuuki was comfortable enough with her to reveal her dream of becoming a professional cellist. She also voiced her worries about her lack of money, and was extremely touched by Suzume's earnest encouragement and support. Suzume reminded her to keep practicing and even created practicing schedules for her. When Suzume announced her intentions of also attending Seiso, Yuuki was delighted and helped Suzume practice her saxophone in any way she could. Although Yuuki was saddened when Suzume did not get accepted into Seiso's music program, she was still very glad to have a good friend with her when they both entered high school, though in separate departments. However, after finding out about the huge rift between the music and general departments, Yuuki felt disgusted at the shallowness of her fellow classmates. Whenever she and Suzume walk together, she tries to ignore the cold stares and whispering around her. Despite the obvious conflicts, Yuuki still considers Suzume as her best friend.

Future Relationships

I would really like it if Yuuki could meet a guy who would show her that not all men are useless and unreliable, since this is the impression that she gets from her father. And besides, having a girl who has no interest in guys falling in love is just really cute. ♥ I'm open to just about anything, really, so we'll see how the roleplay goes.

Other

The names that I chose for Yuuki and her family all come from the following site: Click.
I put thought into each name and tried to choose characters that had a lot of meaning and correlation with each family member's personality.

Koizumi: koi = small; izumi = fountain, spring
Makoto: makoto = sincerity
Michiko: mi = beauty; chi = wisdom, intellect; ko = child
Yuuto: yuu = gentleness, superiority, goodness; to = soar, fly

Sample RP (>=10 lines):

"How has school been lately, Yuuki?" Her mother stepped out from the small kitchen of their apartment, wiping her hands on a worn dishtowel. She directed a tired smile towards her daughter.

Yuuki sighed, running a hand through her hair tousled by the wind outdoors. She had just come home from a particularly stressful day with difficult lessons and work at Akayama Sweets afterwards. The store usually had a modest amount of business, and she was never overwhelmed while working there, but today had been especially busy.

"It's been alright, okaa-san. It's hard of course, since it's high school after all, but if I'm ever going to get anywhere in life, I'll have to endure it," Yuuki said, watching her mother. "What about you, okaa-san? You seem to be working overtime a lot lately, and cleaning all day isn't going to be good for your health."

Her mother chuckled, turning back into the kitchen to start dinner preparations. "Someone has to pay the bills, dear. And with your father gone on another trip, I have to work hard for all of us. We'll get along just fine. Why don't you go practice your cello while I make dinner?"

Yuuki bit her lip, a painful, bittersweet feeling settling into the pit of her stomach. Her mother worked so hard without ever complaining, and Yuuki wanted to curse the world for being so unjust to such a wonderful, caring person. Wordlessly turning towards her bedroom, she caught sight of a piece of paper taped to her bedroom door.

Tuesday: Practice today! You'll definitely make it, Yuuki! Don't give up! ♥ ♥ ♥ ~Suzume~

She smiled at the schedule--completely made for the whole month and decorated with hearts and stars--and pushed the door open. She opened the clasps of her cello case, removed the instrument inside, positioned herself on a stool and tuned quickly.

Pressing carefully with the pads of her fingers and drawing the bow across with a practiced control, Yuuki listened attentively to the deep timbre of the vibrating strings. The melody was slow, calming, gentle--much like herself, in many ways--though above all, quite melancholy. The notes and technical aspects of the piece were fairly simple, but she had learned that oftentimes, the simplest and slowest pieces were always the hardest. In a slow piece, the importance of proper pitch and rhythm become two-fold, and it was for this exact reason that Yuuki often practiced with such pieces to improve her technical abilities. Every nuance of sound and every touch of her fingers held significance, determining the overall presentation of the composition. And she sought to present only the best.

I won't give up, Suzume, she thought. I'll make you, and okaa-san proud.
