Kurokawa Yuuko

General Education Department or Music Department? Which year?
Music Department, 2nd year

Does your character play an instrument? If yes, which one and how well does your character play it ("ability level")?
Yuuko has been playing the piano for around 8 years, but since she's not very ambitious as a musician, her ability level can only be considered slightly above average.
She also has some experience with the violin (no formal lessons).

Character Description - Please keep in mind that you are allowed to add as much detail as you want to your character

Physical Appearance
Yuuko's appearance can be described as anything but normal. Standing at 169 cm, she usually found herself to be one of the tallest, and slightly underweight, females among her classes. Her dark hair, streaked silver at the tips, reaches the middle of her back, occasionally pulled back into a low ponytail. The top of her hair, though flattened, usually shows signs of untidiness (she openly admits to coming school with her bed hair) while her uneven bangs tend to cover her right eye. She was born with dark brown eyes, a feature that is almost always hidden by various colored contact lenses.

While her appearance at school is considerably tidier, her taste in casual clothing when out in public often leads to her being mistaken for a male... not that she's complaining anyway.

Character Traits

There are two sides to Yuuko that acquaintances will readily confirm: her affinity for games and her aversion to most things feminine.

For as long as anyone could remember, Yuuko always possessed a love for games (predominantly puzzles, video games, and, more recently, online role-playing games). Though this affinity for games could be considered the unhealthy obsession that drove her into isolation years ago, it is also what directs her musical aspirations.
At school, she always brings some sort of a game to kill her free time, sometimes going so far as bringing her laptop, hoping to leech off of a nearby wireless server. When not burdened by schoolwork or locked up in her room, she can be seen as a frequent patron of local internet cafes, arcades and game stores.
On occasion, she will jokingly introduce herself as "Reathe," the name she often assigns the characters she uses in various video games.

A self-proclaimed tomboy, Yuuko stubbornly asserts that she doesn't possess a feminine side. Her knowledge of anything romantic could only be described as nonexistent; she is quite oblivious to the formation of amorous relations around her and needs to be told outright if two people have formed a couple before she understands. Make-up and fashion hold no foundations in her life, and she constantly fails to understand why most girls around her age find so much joy in shopping for clothes or items that might never be used. She hates wearing skirts and dresses and, when given the chance, never fails to gripe about the mandatory school uniform.
Her behavior and speech also seem to reflect her tomboy image.
No one is entirely certain when Yuuko's regime as a tomboy began, but most accredit it to her close relationship with her brother during their childhood.

On the surface, Yuuko is not difficult to get along with. In fact, once introductions have been exchanged, she's normally willing to participate in most conversations as long as the other party makes the first move. She is someone anyone can talk to about their troubles even though she rarely offers any advice or criticisms. Despite her clear obsession with games that occasionally gets in the way of relations, Yuuko can be a fun person to be around and has developed a good, albeit slightly mischievous reputation.

However, everyone has their demons, and Yuuko is no exception. She actually has a fairly pessimistic outlook on life and keeps most of her frustrations pent up. Even so, she almost seems to enjoy those feelings of negativity and even finds entertainment in anything even remotely depressing or violent. Most peers consider her a good listener and, on occasion, a distributor of some good advice, but Yuuko secretly enjoys listening to others vent about their own problems (a win-win situation in her mind). Through time, she also developed a habit of lying; she's not entirely sure of when it started, but she has learned to live with it and sometimes uses it to her advantage. Yuuko usually deals with anything her own character with a need-to-know-basis attitude, thus creating a bit of an emotional rift between herself and acquaintances.

Despite her constant masquerade of a positive image, she's known to have a horribly short temper when she's absorbed in a game. Interruptions are unforgivable in her mind, but she tries her best to suppress any anger so as not to come off as too rude. Her temper is considerably worse when she is extremely fatigued, in which case she will often relapse into silence.

Through extended periods of video game play, she has developed an eye for design and an ear for music of digital media. Though she lacks the ambition to become a professional musician like the majority of her peers, Yuuko does hope to eventually become a musician, namely one in the gaming industry. Despite her experimentations with digital medium, she will often admit with a laugh that her dream of becoming a game musician is "just a sweet fantasy."

Among her acquaintances, she is unanimously considered a hikikomori, one who often locks him or herself in a room for prolonged periods of time and withdraws from society. Yuuko herself will cheerfully acknowledge this opinion, but does nothing to improve her condition.

Brief History

Similar to most music students, Yuuko was prompted to take up learning to play an instrument by her parents. During her beginning years, she rarely took her lessons seriously, an attitude that frustrated both parents and the instructor. Then, right when her fixation to video games escalated and her grades began to falter, her parents had all of her precious games confiscated. With close to nothing to kill her boredom and reduce her frustrations, she focused more on her piano lessons.

The result? Yuuko found the piano to be a wonderful way for her to let her emotions loose (aside from venting her frustrations out in video games, of course) and it served as a perfect time-killer. Her attitude towards music also changed during an accident at a newly opened bookstore. She had taken a wrong turn in her search for magazines when she found herself in the music sheets section. Her eyes scanned the shelves quickly, but she double-backed around when a familiar title caught her eye. It was a compilation of songs from a favorite video game, all transcribed for the piano. From that moment, the idea of pursuing a career in music seemed more appealing than ever.

When the time to enter high school came, Yuuko planned to follow her brother's example and enroll in Seiso Academy's General Education Department. However, worried that the general lessons would only strengthen their daughter's affinity for games (which, coincidentally, was the goal behind Yuuko's choice) and further drive her into seclusion, her parents constantly pestered Yuuko to apply for the school's Music Department for "a nice change of pace in life." Holding firm to the belief that her musical talent was quite inferior to that of others, the gamer grudgingly complied with her parents' request. Much to her surprise (and slight disappointment), Yuuko scraped through the audition and was thus accepted into Seiso Academy's Music Department.

Relationships

Kurokawa Osamu and Kurokawa Natsumi
Yuuko's parents. Both have stable jobs in the business industry, but also serve as freelance artisans who specialize in calligraphy and ink paintings. They are generally supportive of whatever educational decisions their children make, but have been known to disapprove of their children's affinity for games, so much to the point of confiscations. Now, the parents are much more lenient, as the siblings have proven they are capable of maintaining their grades.
Natsumi openly voices her disapproval of Yuuko's "unladylike behavior" and goes to great lengths to reform her daughter. There have been no successful attempts to date.

Kurokawa Yuuma
Yuuko's older brother and a 3rd year in Seiso Academy's General Education Department. The siblings share a passion for games, though Yuuma has more of a preference for physical activities. A member of several sports clubs, Yuuma aspires to become a professional athlete one day. Both siblings have a blatant disregard for the rift between general education and music students, and they are often seen together, usually with Yuuma's group of friends. However, when separated by classes, they have a mutual agreement not to mention each other unless asked, and, if they do talk about one another, they are to address the other by his or her alias ("Acheron", in his case).
Yuuma jokingly disapproves of his sister's tomboyish personality.

Plans
Nothing in mind as of yet, but it'd be nice if Yuuko could meet new people who will teach her to open up to others and be more truthful to herself.
It's a definite plus if someone can help Yuuko discard of her hikikomori title. XD

Other
I'm a lazy bum who decided to recycle family names.
Yuuko and Yuuma's names are both written with the same kanji: "yuu", meaning "distant, leisurely".
The family name, Kurokawa, meaning "black river", is an allusion to the parents' artistic professions.
More info on hikikomori can be found here.

"Yuuko... Yuuko..." Somewhere beyond the sounds of battle, the cry, accompanied by several rasps against the door, slipped into the room, never reaching Yuuko's ears. Soon, the calls grew more frequent as the knocking grew louder, until the parent standing behind the door could wait no longer and forced the door open.

At that instant, everything happened in one smooth movement. The battle on the digital screen froze in time as the computer game was paused and minimized, immediately replaced by a half-written essay, the cursor hovering readily above another minimized tab; the gamer pushed herself away from her desk with enough strength to position her swivel chair at just the right angle to obscure the entering mother's view of an unopened school bag. Yuuko sat cross-legged atop the chair's comfortable seat, staring blankly as her mother stepped into her room.

"Yes, Kaa-san?" The bored mask she wore hid what irritation she felt towards the interruption.

"I was just-- were you playing a game?" The mother's eyes were clearly scanning Yuuko's desk for any signs of study.

"No. I was writing a paper for school." A pale head gestured towards the computer screen at the word document.

"There were loud noises--"

"I was listening to music." The click of a mouse brought forth a music player.

"-- that sounded like explosions--"

"A classmate signed online. We need to discuss a school project later." A buddy list protruded from the side of the digital screen.

Every complaint was immediately countered with a prepared cover until the mother finally had no choice but to leave the room, not entirely content, but at least under the impression that her daughter was up to par with her schoolwork. As soon as the door clicked shut and her mother's footprints began to fade away, Yuuko immediately swung back around, but decided to add a few sentences to the essay in case the apprehensive parent returned.

The door opened again, allowing her brother to enter the room. Yuuma took one glance down the hall outside before turning back to his sister. Yuuko had barely acknowledged her brother's entrance when the game took up the entire screen again, the battle heating up as time resumed. The period of nonverbal communication that followed was enough for Yuuma to understand what was running through his sister's mind as he watched her lean closer and closer towards the computer screen. Excitement was now controlling her hands as they flew across the keyboard and directed the mouse.

After a moment, Yuuma let out a sigh and spoke up, amusement in his voice. "I love games as much as you, but you're a music student now. Don't you think you should be focusing on your studies more?" He had assumed an authoritative voice, reminiscent of their parents' attitude when Yuuko was accepted into the Music Department, though his imitation was clearly meant to be taken as a joke.

Yuuko sat back in her seat with an air of satisfaction as she watched the boss monster collapse in defeat, a mysterious smile forming on her lips. "Heh, who knows..."
