Name, Age: Penchan, 20 Do you play an instrument? If yes, which one and for how long?: I studied the piano when I was in elementary school, but I quit after about two years. Character you apply for: Mori Manami How often will you be able to role-play?: Once or twice a week, at least. Picture of character: http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x13/nylle15/manami_mori.jpg Character Description (biography, behaviour, relationships...): Mori Manami is a second year student at Seiso's prestigious music department. She belongs to Class 2-A, the same class as Tsukimori, and is majoring on the piano. (Since there's basically nothing known about her and she gets... about 5 minutes of total screen time during the whole series, I took the liberty of building up a personality and history for her.) Traits Manami is a cheerful and outgoing girl. There can never be an awkward or silent moment with her around since she can easily break the ice with her sense of humor and penchant for jokes. Even the people she had just met would find it easy to slip into conversation with her, since she tries her best to make the people around her feel comfortable. Manami's confidence shines in the way she carries herself and her polite speech and refined manners exhibit her fine upbringing. Manami's tolerant and composed nature has enabled her to deal with all sorts of people. She extends her friendship to everyone, but she is well aware that not all people would like to be around her. She doesn't bother much with those people and she doesn't let their hostility affect her too much. She is not easily unnerved by trivial things, and she handles every situation in a rational and collected manner. However, her patience has a limit too and when pushed beyond what she can take, Manami does not hesitate to retaliate. She is the type of person who would not let other people walk all over her or her friends. Despite giving off that laidback and carefree attitude, Manami is actually very serious when it comes to music. She considers music as 'the only thing she has', so she takes her studies very seriously and tries to do her best in every exam, every activity, every presentation. She knows that competition is fierce in the music world, and even if a person has talent, it doesn't mean that he will make it big. Manami dreams of studying in Europe and becoming a concert pianist, and in order to achieve that dream, she strives to be among the best in Seiso. Manami doesn't spend all her time playing the piano though. She enjoys doing normal teenage stuff in her spare time, like shopping, going to the movies and hanging out with her friends. She also engages in baseball every now and then, but she doesn't play as intensely as when she was young, because there is always a possibility that she could injure her fingers, which is the most important asset for a pianist. Like any other girl, Manami has a romantic interest too. She has taken a liking to a certain gen-ed soccer player, but she has no intentions of nursing the feelings into something more than a crush. History Like many of the students in the music department, Manami was born in an affluent household. Her father is a successful businessman and her mother works in a multi-national company. Manami grew up with all her needs and wants taken care of, but her parents were always busy with work and thus were rarely by her side. She and her younger brother Tetsu were practically raised by her grandparents, who lived with them in the house. Manami does not resent her parents for their lack of time and attention to her and to her brother, but she often wished that they would care more about their family than their work. Manami's exposure and interest in music could be attributed to her uncle, Shinichi, who used to live with the Mori family during his university days. Shinichi was a skilled pianist who was pursuing his musical studies at Tokyo College of Music. Whenever Shinichi would practice, Manami, who was five years old then, would always be watching him. She was so fascinated by the beautiful sounds that the piano would make that sometimes, she could not keep herself from pressing a key even if her uncle was still playing his piece. Shinichi noticed her apparent interest in the piano and began giving her informal lessons during his free time. Manami easily mastered the basics and showed a natural talent for playing the instrument that Shinichi suggested to his brother (Manami's father) to let her take formal lessons. Manami's father enrolled her to a piano class and since then, her piano playing improved rapidly. Shinichi kept encouraging her along the way, often saying that she had promising potential for the piano and that if she kept practicing, she would surpass him one day. However, after Shinichi graduated and moved to Europe, Manami's piano playing came to a standstill. She became too engrossed in baseball that she sometimes skipped her piano lessons in order to play all afternoon. Her father found out soon enough that she hadn't been attending her lessons and had her drop from the class. Manami had stopped playing the piano since then. After elementary school graduation, she came across her old piano books as she was fixing her clutter of school things. Flipping through the sheets made her feel nostalgic, and so she took her books and opened the piano for the first time in three years. Her skills were slightly rusty, but the fact that she could still read the sheet music and still play made her really happy. She began practicing and soon asked her father to let her take lessons again. He agreed on the condition that she would never skip her classes ever. During the summer of Manami's second year in junior high school, the Mori family received a letter from Shinichi. He shared the news of his successful graduation recital, along with photos of the event. A small note, addressed to Manami had read: "Manami-chan, how is your piano? You must be really skilled by now! When I come back and visit, I want you to play for me. It's a promise, okay?" Since she didn't want to disappoint her uncle, who was the reason why she had started playing the piano in the first place, she began taking her lessons seriously and showed excellent results. After graduating from junior high, Manami began to consider music as a profession. She wanted to study in a music academy to hone her skills and to prepare herself for further studies abroad. Her parents initially opposed this idea, since they believe that a career in music would be impractical and unstable in the long run. But due to Manami's persistence, they finally gave in and let her enroll in the prestigious Seiso Academy, provided that she pass the auditions. Luckily, Manami pulled through all of the screenings and was accepted into Seiso's music department. Relationships At Seiso Manami volunteered to be Hino Kahoko's accompanist after the incident during the First Selection, where Hino's accompanist backed out and Tsuchiura filled in for her. She was touched by Hino's hard work and passion for music despite being a gen-ed student and decided to help her out. The two immediately became friends. Manami continually supported and encouraged Hino during the course of the concours, giving her advice and cheering her up to help her get rid of stage jitters. Manami deeply regretted injuring her arm during the day of the Final Selection, as she really wanted to accompany Hino until the end. But luckily, another student volunteered to take her place and things went well. Since it is in Manami's nature to be friendly, she doesn't have problems getting along with most of her peers. She became fast friends with Mio and Nao when the two girls visited Hino during practice and they took a break at the rooftop. She is also on friendly terms with the other participants' accompanists. Manami and Amou hit it off right at the start since they seem to agree on a lot of things, especially when it came to their impression of the five male participants. Despite being classmates, Manami and Tsukimori had never interacted much, mostly because of the latter's aloofness. She, however, does not view him with hostility unlike the other music students. Kozu Hiroyuki Hiroyuki is a classmate of Manami since her first year in Seiso. He has openly showed dislike for her since she always strikes up conversations with him, but his snobbish and aloof attitude has not deterred Manami from trying to be friends with him. Katagiri Taro Taro is a childhood friend of Manami from elementary school. They were classmates back in fourth grade and became good friends after Manami defended Taro from a group of bullies. Family Mori Takahiro (grandfather) and Mori Shizuka (grandmother) Conventional and slightly old-fashioned, Manami's grandparents raised her to be a refined and proper lady befitting society's standards. Though they can be strict when imposing discipline in the house, they care about their grandchildren a lot. Mori Ryunosuke and Mori Kana Manami's parents steadily work hard in order to provide a good life for the family, but because they are always busy, they rarely have time to spend with their children. Manami treats them with courtesy and respect, but she has a slight detachment towards them, since they were never really around when she was growing up. Mori Tetsu Manami and Tetsu have a typical brother-sister relationship. They often argue over trivial things and annoy each other out of their wits but despite that, they care a lot about each other. Tetsu is in elementary school and is one of the star players in his baseball team. Mori Shinichi Shinichi is Manami's role model and inspiration when it comes to music. It was through his encouragement that she pushed through with her piano. She aspires to be like him one day and does her best so as not to disappoint him. Your goals? (what do you plan with your character?) One of the reasons I've always been so interested in side characters like Mori is because they have so little screen time. You never see enough of them to actually get to know them, and there's probably a lot more going in their heads than what is portrayed in the series. I want to explore the different aspects of her personality and how she would react in certain situations with certain people. I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to her than just the 'faithful sidekick' role she has been given in the series. I also want her to meet and interact with new people, develop friendships and deepen the ones that she already has. Short sample RP (~10 lines): Manami stiffled a yawn as she dragged her feet along the floor while making her way towards the classroom. That music theory homework she forgot to do took ages to finish, which resulted in her sleeping at the wee hours of the morning. Her body felt lethargic; her eyes were droopy and her brain was fuzzy and clouded. It would take extra effort to stay awake during the first class, especially since the teacher, Tanemura-sensei, had a voice that could lull anyone to sleep. As she rounded a corner, she noticed a group of students crowding the bulletin board on that floor. Their loud chatters filled the hallway and Manami was able to catch some words like 'practical test', 'so soon', and 'not ready yet'. Wondering what the fuss was all about, she made her way towards the crowd. She tried to peer from over someone's shoulder, but the other taller people in front of her were blocking her view. She pushed her way through the crowd, mumbling excuses in case she bumped into someone, until she found herself before the bulletin board. A piece of paper was tacked on it, with a header that screamed "ATTENTION PIANO STUDENTS!" in big, bold letters. Manami scanned the announcement and a long sigh escaped her lips when the content finally registered in her brain. There was a practical exam for piano students next week, the same week when teachers would be giving out midterm exams. What luck. Now I have to look for an appropriate piece and practice on top of all that studying. As much as she loved playing the piano, a practical exam in the same week as the midterm exams was just too much to handle. She trudged towards her classroom feeling more lethargic than before. Next week's workload was definitely not something to look forward to. |
