This thread starts in 8-Eleven, convenience store residing near Seisou. JOIN PEOPLE. x3 == Shiba adjusted his green apron on which was the bright and gaudy 8-Eleven logo and a nametag and tapped a finger on the shiny surface of the counter. It was a particularly slow day -- ever since his shift started a little over one and a half hours ago he'd barely even seen five customers. Sighing, he gave the interior of the shop a sweeping glance, as if a customer might have been hiding behind the instant ramen shelves all this while. Out of the corner of his eye he caught sight of the cardboard box right next to the entrance of the tiny storeroom, cleverly concealed by the air fresheners and other knick-knacks one might find in a convenience store. "Oh, Shiba-kun, the new magazines came in today." His manager's words replayed in his head, and Shiba frowned at his own negligence. Ripping open the cardboard flaps with ease, he lifted the contents of the box out and next to the magazine display rack, which had already thinned out since its last restocking. Among these were the immaculately thick manga magazines (girls', boys', womens', pornographic -- Shiba swiftly stowed these at the back, where the store usually left them), glossy music magazines embossed with the most popular boy band at present, and random hobby magazines that Shiba had never even heard of (teddy-bear making, knitting, motorcross racing and the like). Dusting his hands off and stepping back to admire his handiwork, he only just caught the ringing of the bell as the door to the store swung open. "Irrashaimase," he greeted on reflex. |

The weekend was finally here. Second year as a music student didn't seem so demanding until more expectations and requirements were introduced, and after readjusting to the school schedule, Yuuko found herself longing for break to arrive already. She would've given anything to return home immediately after the last lesson, but no luck. It was only until she finished helping tidy up the classroom and completed an hour-long practice session did the long school day finally come to an end. The music student soon darted out of the nearly empty school grounds, eager to get home to change out of the uniform skirt. However, the run quickly slowed into a slow walk as something registered in her mind. During the time she spent at school after classes her brother had most likely invited his friends over to their home to waste the entire afternoon playing multiplayer games. As she continued walking, Yuuko caught sight of a clock through tinted windows. We must be out of refreshments by now... The very thought, though improbable, amused her. Her gaze then trailed from her reflection -- the fact that her hair was messier after running only served to amuse her more -- to the bright 8-Eleven sign above. A moment of hesitation passed before she stepped towards the convenience store, bells chiming as the door swung open. The following greeting caught Yuuko a bit off guard, and she immediately looked up to see who had spoken. Dark amethyst eyes (today's color choice for unknown reasons) quickly scanned the interior of the convenience store before spotting the worker. Any traces of confusion on her face were soon replaced by a small smile as she mentally reprimanded her stupidity. How could she forget that there would always be at least one other person in a convenience store? For a second, she stood there, unsure of how to verbally respond to the worker's greeting. After a mental slap, Yuuko resorted to bowing her head before stepping inside. |

Shiba would have stood there staring at the girl for quite some time if not for the sudden realisation that doing that would be uncalled for and rude. Was she a foreigner (his eyes could detect a faint trace of green in hers even from that distance)? Or maybe part of some kind of secret society (what with the dyed hair)? And was this any of his business anyway? Upon closer inspection he'd accientally put a gaming magazine (Ninkendo Gamers' Monthly) next to a necktie collectors' special, and he busied himself with putting them in place. "... Need anything?" he cleared his throat, but unable to form a smile (the manager had long given up on letting the "Service With A Smile!" rule apply to Shiba). |

"... Need anything?" Yuuko watched as the worker turned away, and her eyes soon caught the title of one of the magazines being placed. Her expression brightened as she stepped quickly towards the rack, picking the magazine out of his hand before he could set it down again. "I'll take this, for starters," she said with a wider smile. After taking a step back, she turned the magazine over to get a better view of the cover before taking another look around the convenience store. Now, the decision to enter was clearly worthwhile. |

"I'll take this, for starters," "... Okay." Shiba felt his eyes narrow as she whipped the book out of his hand (he liked to do things thoroughly), but she was a customer and it wasn't in his power to do anything about it. One last look at the magazine rack he gave, but it was picture-perfect and he had no excuse to stay there any longer. Hopefully the girl would buy something; a near-empty till wouldn't say much about himself. He raised an eyebrow at the girl who appeared to be digging into the magazine like a starving man at a buffet. Her uniform spiked his interest further -- Seisou's unique western-influenced blazer and skirt, and by the looks of it, she was a second year (as justified from the color of her tie) from the music department. Music, huh. The very thought of it sent him back to when it was just two little boys and a cello. I wonder what she plays. "You're from Seisou." When in doubt (or in this case an awkward silence), Shiba had a tendency to state the obvious. |

Yuuko had just began form a mental shopping list when she heard the worker mention the school's name. "Eh?" She blinked once in confusion, but then let out a sigh when she understood how the worker guessed (or rather, stated) where she attended school. "Ah, this horrid uniform. But yes, I am a student at Seiso." At that moment, a strange medley of piano, digital music and haunting vocals broke the resettling silence. Her hands immediately dug into the front pocket of her school bag, pulling out a slim black cellphone, devoid of any charms. She took one glance to see who was calling before bowing apologetically to the worker and turning away slightly. The phone flipped open as she brought it up, but the ruckus on the other end caused her to pull the speaker a couple of centimeters away from her ear. "Yo, Aniki. ... Mm. ... I am at 8-Eleven near school right now." Her eyes narrowed slightly as she tried her best to make out her brother's words; she didn't want to risk breaking her ear drums by bringing the phone closer. "Eh~ that much already? ... Wait- you guys are playing without me?! ... Save a round for me!" At this point, she would have been shouting into the phone if she didn't remember there was someone else in the immediate area. "Fine. ... You have to pay me back though." A sigh escaped her mouth as she shut her phone and slid it back into her bag's front pocket. She looked back up at the worker with an apologetic grin. "Sorry about that... but it looks like I will be here a while. I hope I don't empty out your shelves." She laughed at her last comment; the shopping list of junk food had quadrupled in size. |

"Sorry about that... but it looks like I will be here a while. I hope I don't empty out your shelves." "... It's fine," Shiba replied, unsure whether or not to force a smile back (because he really didn't know whether there was anything funny about the whole thing at all). In any case it was time for him to go back and buss the counter or do some other pointless task. The girl was odd, to say the least. The ruckus occuring on the other end of that phone call was loud enough to be heard even from a good distance away, and involved a lot of shouting and screaming and familiar background music. Her ringtone, too. He'd heard it somewhere before, perhaps when passing by a shop while walking down a street. This isn't any of my business anyway, he said to himself, as he ran a damp cloth over the already sparkling counter. |

Her smile remained. This worker was certainly different from ones she had seen before. The few convenience store workers she had ever met were usually all smiles, eager to help customers. This one, however, had yet to smile (if he ever did) and seemed to pay more attention to his own job. Yuuko couldn't help but wonder how someone like him was given a chance to work here, but this was a... "refreshing" change. Right when the worker turned away, Yuuko grabbed a small basket from near the door and immediately made a beeline for the drinks. She worked rather quickly at first, her eyes scanning over brands and flavors, her hands reaching out and grabbing various bottles and cartons. It wasn't long before the basket was filled with beverages, and by then, her pace had slowed as she began running the names of her brother's friends through her mind so she wouldn't miss anything. The constant pauses made her aware of the weight of the basket, and she constantly transferred the basket and her school bag between her hands. Maybe going to a supermarket would have been a better idea... She hadn't even begun picking out snacks yet. ================ I can't think right now. D:" |

Shiba eyed the only other living being in the shop amusedly. The way she gathered her groceries reminded him of a kind of small rodent collecting foodstuff. At this very thought he stifled the urge to laugh out loud (not that loudly, of course, but laughing at all was a rather enormous feat for Shiba already), making sure to turn around and pretend he was inspecting the glass wall behind him so she wouldn't suspect anything. Her basket was steadily filling up with her picks. The corner of his lip twitching once, Shiba walked up to her with another basket and held out a hand to receive the nearly-full one. "I'll help." |

Had Yuuko known she was being compared to an animal, she might have responded with a... well, it's not certain what she would have responded with. Her mind worked in strange ways, and there was no telling if her following comment would have been riddled with references to games or completely change the topic. However, as she was certainly not a telepathist, Yuuko remained oblivious to the worker's thoughts, and as thought nothing unusual of when he faced the wall behind him. When she dared not place another beverage into the basket (for fear of breaking the handles off, which would undoubtedly pull more money out of her wallet), Yuuko turned when she heard the worker speak. Habit told her to decline his offer of assitance and assert that she was fully capable of carrying the basket herself, but the increasing weight forced her to reconsider this viewpoint. "... Thanks." The lopsided grin she wore to hide any notions that she wasn't used to accepting another's help appreared more like an amused smirk. The exchange of baskets was done at a slow pace so that she wouldn't suddenly drop the full basket into his hand. The alleviation of the weight was welcome, and she looked up at the worker with an apologetic smile. "I'll try to be quick." And true to her word, Yuuko began picking out bags and boxes from other shelves at a simlar pace as before. |

Riju dashed down the street, clutching at his abdomen -- had he known that he would be this hungry, wouldn't have skipped lunch to finish his English homework. He braked as he neared the entrance of the local 8-Eleven convenience store; smoothening his hair and clothes with his left hand and making sure his camera was safely on its strap with his right, he took a deep breath and pushed on the metal handle. ding He took a small glance around the konbini -- it was nearly empty. He could see the top of a tall person's head over one of the shelves, and heard a familiar low voice and a not-so-familiar female one. Other than that, the place was deserted. Riju wondered if anyone was going to greet him. His stomach let out a low growl -- he gave a short yelp before dashing off to the shelf displaying a small variety of snacks. Within a few minutes he had armed himself with two strawberry-and-cream sandwiches, a box of strawberry milk and a tube of flavoured sweets. Riju, admittedly, had a love for any food that was sweet, pink or strawberry-flavoured -- though he would never let himself get caught eating anything like that in school (he usually spent the first five minutes of lunch stuffing himself with goodies on the roof). Satisfied, Riju swung around to face the counter; his hunger pangs had ebbed slightly. paa His camera, which had been dangling on the long strap around his left shoulder for accessibility purposes, had crashed into a small display of green tea Pocky, causing the small tower to crumble in a flash of pale green and white. Oh God. And his stomach was growling again, this time louder than ever. |

The basket Shiba received from Kurokawa Yuuko (although he did not know her name yet) was, as obvious, very, very heavy. He marveled at the fact that the girl was able to carry it for even a second before handing it over. Nevertheless, Shiba had strong arms, strong legs, strong abs and a strong body in general, and it wasn't as much trouble to carry what felt like a solid boulder with handles. Again the girl started cramming items into the new basket with voracity. Shiba might have almost smiled as he mentally added up the prices of each object she picked up, had he not been interrupted by the ringing of the a bell. He turned to greet the new customer upon reflex, but instead of a human being all he saw was a blur zip into the shop. And almost immediately after that, there came a small crash as he saw, from over the shelves, the small pyramid-esque stack of green tea-flavored Pocky collapse in one fell swoop. Eyes narrowing, he aimed an apologetic glance at the girl from Seisou, and headed straight for the accident area. "... Riju?!" |

Her ears picked up with the ringing of a bell, to which she resisted the urge to sigh a little. Now that there was one more person in the store, maybe the atmosphere wouldn't be as silent. However the silence was soon broken with a crash. Yuuko snapped her head in the direction from when the sound came. Her hand remained suspended in air in front of a box of chocolate as she watched the worker move towards the counter. It wasn't long before curiosity got the better her. Quick steps brought her to the end of the aisle, where she then stuck her head out to see what had happened. There stood a customer among the toppled pile of green tea Pocky and the shocked worker -- well... he sounded shocked when he addressed the former. Ah, so they know each other? Yuuko brought the side of a fist up to her mouth to stifle a laugh. In all honesty, the scene before her was rather amusing. |

"... Riju?!" And his hunger pangs subsided. "... Shiba!?" Riju gaped, nearly dropping one of his sandwiches as he struggled to keep his balance. "Wha- you-" He looked Shiba up and down -- the same dark hair, steely eyes (widened a little due to shock) and pointed chin, now decked in the store's uniform, an apron tied around his waist -- but this wasn't the time to be complimenting his old friend. Riju noticed a girl stick her head out from behind a shelf, then bring her hand to her mouth as if hiding a giggle; being the reputation-conscious boy he was, Riju gave an angry pout and blushed red. He swivelled around quickly and tried to re-stack the rectangular cardboard boxes -- he wanted to get out of the store as fast as he could. |

Shiba's eye twitched (for twitching of various body parts happened to be most common of the few ways he knew how to display emotion) at the girl, who obviously was trying to hide a giggle. Now annoyed at both the Riju and the girl, the former for upsetting the display (which the meticulous store manager took hours just to stack) and the latter for not doing a thing to help, Shiba sighed and shook his head, bending down to help pick up the stray boxes of Pocky. "I'll help you in a minute," he directed this at the girl as he started building the foundation of the Pocky pyramid. Riju (who looked wholly embarrassed about the whole situation) happened to be more hindrance than help -- Shiba aimed a look at him that clearly said "Stop trying." He'd enough trouble already. Finishing the pyramid in record time (although the end product wasn't exactly pyramid-shaped), Shiba threw the strawberry sandwich on the floor into Riju's arms and stood up. More handiwork to admire; and at this, a small, almost microscopic smirk couldn't help forming on Shiba's face. |
