What/Who/Where: Hino Kahoko chances upon Mori Manami near the soccer field. Why: Girl bonding over boys (and music). XD When: Dismissal time ================================== Manami had never considered herself to be a romantic type of person. Unlike most girls, she had never imagined herself to be a princess during her childhood days (she only dreamed of being as good a pianist as her uncle Shinichi, or otherwise becoming the best girl pitcher to ever live). She had never thought of herself as being in-love, making handmade chocolates on Valentines day or painstakingly preparing a bento for her special someone. While girls her age dream of the perfect date with their boyfriends, she dreamed of other things like playing in Europe's best concert hall and becoming a world-renowned pianist. In short, romance had never crossed the mind of Mori Manami. Not even once. But that was before she saw him during a soccer game at the beginning of her second year in Seiso. It wasn't actually love or anything like that that she felt for him after seeing his amazing prowess in the field. It was merely admiration, a simple teenage crush. He was a fantastic athlete and had the looks to boot, which was why she was attracted to him. He seemed to be a nice and friendly guy judging from the way he treated his teammates. He wasn't a potential boyfriend candidate; he was just someone she wanted to get to know better and become friends with. But even if that was the case, Manami still couldn't pluck up the courage to talk to him. Girls tended to be shy around their crushes and she was no exception. So she just contented herself with admiring him from afar and quietly cheering for him during his games. She kept her presence as inconspicuous as possible, so as not to be mistaken as one of those fangirls who cheer their lungs out every single day, but were never really paid any attention by the team. This particular afternoon, Manami passed by the field just as players assembled themselves for their usual practice game. She settled on a nearby bench overlooking the field and placed her bag on her lap, intending to watch them (and him, of course) for a while, before heading home. In her mind, she hoped that no one she knew would see her there and ask any embarrassing or compromising questions. She wasn't quite ready to have other people know about this crush of hers yet. But just in case, she kept her arsenal of comeback quips ready. ================================== Lovestruck!Manami, omg. XD; I hope she wasn't too ooc. Edited by penchan, Feb 15 2009, 01:28 AM.

Kahoko was very much like Manami in a few senses. First was her unwavering devotion to and love for music, and second was her complete ignorance, for most of her natural-born life, of all things romantic concerning the opposite sex. She had never been pursued by boys, at Seisou or elsewhere, and had harbored no secret desire for their company in any capacity other than friendship… until the concours. Surrounded by all those attractive, talented, open-hearted (well, most of them anyway) young men, and after that incident with Hihara at the training camp, well, how could she help but think of them in other terms, at least in her subconscious mind (the part of her that blushed whenever she recalled that moment, her almost-kiss)? While she did her level best to continue to view them in a platonic light, and for the most part had been very successful at doing so, her female friends’ constant reminders about the “violin romance” and questions as to which boy she favored best were slowly chipping away at her stubborn resistance to acknowledging that any of them could possibly be attracted to her . However, even should she wish to discuss her occasional confusion after speaking to Hihara-senpai, who would she speak with? Amou’s nosiness meant that anything she confessed to that girl would appear as a headline of the school paper, and Mio and Nao were rather superficial in their assessments of the boys in question, preferring instead to focus on their good looks rather than their personalities. On this day, of course, none of this was at the front of her mind or the focus of her afternoon. She had promised to come watch Tsuchiura-kun practice with the soccer team, to “see how the other half lives”, as he’d jokingly put it, and weaved her way into the sparsely populated benches in order to hide herself from any errant flying balls, which always seemed to find their way straight to her head during gym. Then she spotted Manami and her face lit up in surprised delight. Waving, she made her way to the other girl who had helped her out in such a tight spot earlier in the year as she called cheerfully, “Good afternoon, Mori-chan! I see you, too, are braving the threat of stray soccer balls in order to watch our team.” |

Merely a few minutes had passed after Manami had settled down comfortably on the bench when the referee's whistle rang in her ears. Averting her gaze to the field, she saw the players running into position as the black-and-white ball sailed in the air, signaling the game kickoff. From amongst the energetic boys clad in red and blue practice jerseys, she spotted him, expertly maneuvering the ball with his legs towards the opponent's goal. (And no, she wasn't specifically eyeing him at this point; her eyes just naturally fell on him because he just really stood out.) A smile crossed her lips as a cheer for him erupted in her mind. “Good afternoon, Mori-chan! I see you, too, are braving the threat of stray soccer balls in order to watch our team.” Manami sat up straight, her back stiffening upon hearing her name being called out. She was almost afraid to look to her side and see who it was -- if it turned out to be a prying classmate (which she fervently hoped not), she might end up being the talk of class tomorrow. Not that Mori Manami minded being talked about, but she preferred keeping a low profile -- it made life a lot easier. Raising her head slowly, her shoulders relaxed when she realized that it was Hino Kahoko, approaching her with a delighted smile on her face and a violin case in tow. Manami raised her hand in greeting as the ruby-haired violinist reached the bench where she was sitting. "Hello, Hino-chan! Fancy seeing you here," she said with a smile as she moved to the side to make space for her unexpected companion. Shifting slightly to find a comfortable position, Manami motioned for Hino to sit down next to her. |

"Yes, a rare occurrence, I know," Kahoko said with a self-deprecating laugh as she sat beside the brunette with a grateful smile for the offered company. "I promised Tsuchiura-kun that I'd actually get some fresh air in exchange for the Chopin scores he let me borrow to follow along with on my cd player," she explained. "And he reminded me that I could always return the sheet music to him after practice... with a rather blatant hint that if I came and watched the team play, I'd be catching two birds with one treat." She didn't like saying 'killing two birds with one stone', which was what Tsuchiura had actually told her. The expression struck her as unnecessarily violent, and her resident music fata certainly wouldn't have approved. "They're very good, aren't they?" She said in surprise after watching for a few moments, partly out of loyalty to her friend and partly because it was true. "Particularly him~" Kahoko then pointed, unknowingly, to the very boy upon whom Manami's attentions had been fixed. "Don't you think so, Mori-chan?" |

"They're very good, aren't they? Particularly him~ Don't you think so, Mori-chan?" The brunette gave Hino an eager nod accompanied by a smile. "Yes, they're really good. It's no wonder they've been steady winners this season." Admittedly, Manami had very little interest in soccer before she knew of him. But ever since her classmate Maiko (who was then head-over-heels in love with a senpai from the team) had forcefully dragged her to a game early this year, the sophomore pianist had found herself slowly becoming fond of the sport. She began going to more of the team's games to lend her support. She even began to care about the team's standings in the prefectural rankings! The things that a crush could make people do. As she averted her gaze towards the person Hino was referring to, Manami's eyes fell on the same boy who had her transfixed since the start of the game. A small smile crossed her lips. There was really no dispute over how skillful a player he is. "That was a nice steal," she commented in mild surprise, marveling at the smooth maneuver he performed to steal the ball from the opposing team. Clasping her hands together and placing them over her bag, Manami turned to Hino, attempting to follow-up the conversation. "He's certainly very talented, isn't he? Tsuchiura-san, I mean. He makes playing soccer look so effortless." Edited by penchan, Feb 28 2009, 07:02 PM.

“I… should be more enthusiastic about our sports teams than I really am,” Kahoko admitted with a little frown of embarrassment. “But I often don’t know what’s going on, so it’s difficult for me to follow their progress,” she confessed. “Still, I have to say it’s impressive! If I tried to play, I’d trip over my own two feet or score a goal for the other team, I guarantee it.” She watched the rest of the team, trying to give them as much of her time and attention as the boy she’d come to see play, since Tsuchiura-kun might try to grill her after their practice ended and she’d have to tell him what she thought of everyone’s performance, not just his. But her eyes kept being drawn back to the tall, sturdily-built boy with hair the color of the field he was playing on. He put all his grace and strength from piano into athletics as well, or perhaps it was the other way around? Still, whichever direction the transfer went, Kahoko could easily see the traits he brought to his music serve him in good stead when he was helping his teammates. And whenever he got the ball, he really shone. Kahoko slid her gaze over to Manami, who was watching even more raptly than Kaho herself had been, and apparently had been following Tsuchiura’s progress avidly for some time. “It’s hard to watch anyone else, isn’t it?” She said with a small grin. “He’s…” so attention-grabbing “…it’s like he’s not even trying! I mean, I know he is , but he makes it look easy. Hmph. Some people have all the skill,” she sighed as she turned her attention back to the black and white ball that was being passed from boy to boy. [ooc: I am so sorry about the delay. So very, very sorry. I got overwhelmed with schoolwork and kept meaning to get back to the threads and just... didn't. I will be much better from now on! Spring break is coming soon! Not that that means anything, I still have homework, but still!] |

Almost instantly, Manami felt a certain hotness on her cheeks when she realized that Hino had noticed her watching Tsuchiura so intently. She hid the embarrassment behind soft chuckles as she listened to Hino's animated comments about the soccer team's ace. "He's such a natural at the sport. And to think he's talented at playing the piano too! He really has all the skill," she said, affirming Hino's previous statement with a nod. As she watched him maneuver the ball gracefully towards their goal, she marveled at the thought that aside from being such a talented athlete, Tsuchiura was such a fine musician too. When he had filled in as Hino's accompanist during the First Selection, he shocked the audience with his hidden talent. When he became one of the participants, he never failed to astonish the crowd with his piano prowess during every single performance. It was not surprising that he soon gained a reputation among the music students and had garnered a few admirers too. "Just watch him play like that and you think he was just made for soccer and nothing else." A smile crossed the brunette's lips as the memory of the concours dawned on her mind again. "I guess that was why everyone was so shocked to find out that he played the piano too." She then turned to Hino, a rather curious expression shrouding her face. "You knew about him playing the piano even before the concours, didn't you, Hino-chan?" [ooc: It's alright poetry-san! I'm sorry for taking so long to reply too; school's been sucking up most of my time too. >_>] |

"Yes, I did," Kahoko affirmed as she continued to watch Tsuchiura score goal after goal. "It was completely by accident, however, and he made me promise to keep it a secret. I stumbled upon him playing at a local music shop one day—you could say I was drawn in by the beautiful sound. I could never understand why he didn’t want anyone to know he had this amazing talent, but I respected his decision.” She cast a wry sidelong glance at Manami. “Can you believe he was just as stellar when he was this little?” She held up her hand about four feet off the bleachers to demonstrate youth. “The man in charge of the music store let me watch a video he had on file of him competing.” She took a breath, casting her mind back to the stressful events of the first concours and her accompanist’s sudden abandonment of her, a shadow passing over her face as she remembered learning for the first time that not every music student was happy about her participation. “Then, when he made that spectacular save for me during the first concours… that was when I discovered what a true friend Tsuchiura-kun can be. To put aside his hesitation about playing in for me was so amazing. I can’t begin to tell you how astonished I was. I can never thank him enough or do enough to repay him… particularly now that I pester him to play Chopin for me all the time,” she concluded. |

The brunette listened with mild fascination at Hino's words, and even let out a small chuckle when the violinist demonstrated how small Tsuchiura was when he was younger. The way Hino attested to his piano skills made Manami think that perhaps, the ace soccer player had, not just talent, but also sheer musical genius. Whenever she would refresh his concour performances in her head and weigh it against her own performances, she would always come to the same conclusion - his piano, despite being raw in technique and execution, was more or less a level higher than hers. If he had entered the music department, no doubt that he would be one of the best piano students the academy would have had. She vaguely wondered why Tsuchiura had decided to keep his musical side hidden for so long. Perhaps if it wasn't for Hino and the unexpected turn of events during the First Selection, the whole school would have never known about his piano prowess. Glancing at Hino, Manami noticed the fond expression shrouding the redhead's face as she gazed at the field. "You guys are extremely close, aren't you?" Manami commented, a hint of good-natured teasing lacing her voice as a smile tugged at the sides of her lips. During the concours, there had always been interesting interactions between Hino and Tsuchiura, and the brunette had often wondered if it really was as the rumors had said. ooc: Ack, poetry-san, sorry for the fail!reply. My brain friend in the middle of figuring out what to write but I didn't want to leave our thread hanging for too long. I'll promise to make it up to you somehow |

"I guess you could say that," Kahoko said lightly, not catching the hidden meaning in Manami's words in the slightest. Innuendo and suggestions of interest in the opposite sex tended to fly right past her head. Only Yunoki's blatant harassment had truly caught her attention, and that was only because she couldn't fail to miss being pushed against the rooftop wall and mocked mercilessly. So she considered the question, not in the vein Manami had perhaps asked it, but in all innocence. "I...rather literally ran into him before the concours even started, and we sort of bonded over the oddness of being general education students lost in the music wing corridors. It was a complete accident that I found out he played the piano like that. To this day I don't understand why he kept it secret for so long. Actually, our friendship has been full of happy accidents, I think." She offered Manami a lopsided smile as she watched the team cool down. "I don't know what I would have done if he hadn't stepped in for me like that. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to know someone so talented and kind." Unlike other talented individuals I could name, Kahoko thought with a small inward laugh, although she refused to badmouth any of the other participants, even to her former accompanist. "It's like...we were competitors, of course, but I don't think we ever really viewed it that way. Since we were the odd ones out, really. I was just grateful to have someone else who found everything as strange as I did, even if he really should have been competing all his life. Ahh, it would be wonderful to be able to devote so much time to my music like that," she noted, swinging her legs back and forth over the bleacher bench below her. If only her grades improved. If only she were smarter. If only she managed her time better. Oh, well. She was who she was, and she doubted her iq was changing any time soon. |
