What/Who: Mori Manami and Katagiri Taro meet and have a friendly chat
Where: Outside the school gates; will eventually move to a manga store.
When: Afternoon, after club practices

==================================

It had been a rather tiring day for Mori Manami, who has hit (once again) with the realization that life as a piano student, aside from being difficult, also came with unwelcome bodily pain. The two grueling hours she poured over drills and etudes under the scrutinizing eye of her mentor had caused almost all of her fingers to go numb with strain and her neck and back to go stiff. It didn't help that Ishikawa-sensei, perfectionist that he is, made her repeat some pieces over and over again because of a wrong attack here or an improper finger position there. It was only after a lengthy lecture about her mistakes that he called it a day, and the young pianist, ecstatic that practice had finally ended, disappeared from the practice room almost in a flash.

Manami let out a relieved sigh as she walked out of the music department foyer and into the spacious Seiso grounds. Walking over to one corner, she stretched out her arms and shook her hands to relax them a bit, while taking in the after-school sights. There were not a lot of students around this time anymore; most of them had already gone home during the usual dismissal time. Those who stayed back were usually music students who had extra practice, or gen-ed students who had club activities. She spotted a group of athletes, still clad in their practice jerseys, engaging in an animated conversation with a group of girls, who were trying hard to stifle their giggles (but ultimately failing). A couple of music students, presumably from the orchestra club, piled out of the music building, chattering excitedly about their upcoming performance. A classmate of Manami's from the group called out to her, and she merely smiled and waved in greeting as they passed by her.

The second-year began making her own way to the school gates after a while. As she glanced at her watch, she realized that she still had some time to spare before dinner. She decided to drop by the manga store on the way to her house. Perhaps the new volume of Ookiku Furikabutte was available now. Manami's love for sports had never dwindled down even when she had to abandon it in order to concentrate on her piano. She was especially fond of baseball, a sport she excelled at during her elementary days. Even now, she still had a certain attachment to all things baseball, and that included manga.

Upon approaching the gates, she noticed a group of girls conveniently loitering by the exit and blocking the path. They were talking and giggling in such high-pitched voices, which Manami found to be terribly bad for the ears. She kept herself from wincing and cleared her throat to get their attention.

"Excuse me, could you please let me pass?" she asked with a polite smile.

The coach of the Seiso soccer team was a slave driver. The team began its practice session with ten laps around the field (a “warming up exercise”, as the coach liked to call it) and was constantly ordered about by the coach during the scrimmage. Cursing the coach under his breath every time he was being snubbed at, Taro hasted from one end of the field to the other and asked himself why he was there. In fact, he would have skipped this week’s practice if it had not been for the female spectators on the tribune. Knowing that some of them were eyeing him with the utmost interest, he resolved to show off his abilities as a defender and bravely endured the pain until practice was over.

'Phew, what a horrible afternoon...' thought Taro, as he bid farewell to his teammates who were just as exhausted as he was. His bad mood didn't last long, though, for a group of girls was waiting for him in front of the school gate. “Hey, ladies ~” Taro shouted, jogging towards them with a ball under his arm. After chatting about this week's practice, Taro placed the ball on the ground with a superior air and told them to stand back in amazement. He flicked the ball up in the air, bent forward so that the ball came to rest on his head and tossed it high into the air again. The boy continued his show, juggling with the ball and enjoying the girls' applause until a voice said,

"Excuse me, could you please let me pass?"

It was Mori Manami, a student from the music department. Taro interrupted his little show and greeted her with a grin. “Yo, Mori, are you heading home?” Mori was one of the few girls Taro never flirted with, since he regarded her less as a potential flirt than a good friend. He enjoyed her presence and felt indebted to her ever since she had saved him from a precarious situation during their fourth year at elementary school.

Manami was slightly taken aback when the group of girls turned to her with irritation written on their faces. She stepped aside, not wanting to get involved in any petty arguments. She could not understand why they were so mad though. Hadn't she just excused herself as politely as possible? If anything, she was the one who had the right to be annoyed here, since they were mindlessly blocking the exit, and causing her unwanted delay.

The second-year pianist was about to stalk off in the other direction when a male voice among the group of girls spoke up.

“Yo, Mori, are you heading home?”

Looking over her shoulder, her eyes lit up upon realizing who it was. "Ah, Katagiri!" she exclaimed in mild surprise as she directed a smile at him. Katagiri Taro, from the gen-ed department, was a former classmate of hers from elementary school, and a good childhood friend.

She nodded at his question. "Yes, I'm actually on my way home now." Pausing for a while to give the girls surrounding him a quick glance, Manami noticed that their stares had become a little deadlier than before. She had no doubt that it was because she had disrupted their little rendezvous with school-idol Taro. Or maybe it was because she was being friendly with him? Whatever the reason was, she decided it would not be best to stick around and wait for their auras to go from 'extreme annoyance' to 'murderous intent'.

She smiled apologetically at the group. "Seems like you guys were in the middle of something before I came by. Sorry for the interruption." Bowing her head slightly at them, she gave Taro a quick wave before excusing herself.

======================
“Oy, wait!” Taro called out hastily, stowing his football away when he saw that Mori was about to leave. “Let's walk home together, Mori!”

Since Taro and Mori lived in the same street, they often walked home together after school. However, after the beginning of their second year, it had become more difficult for them to meet up after school due to their different schedules and club practices. Not wanting to waste this rare chance, Taro insisted on walking home with his old friend even if it meant to leave his fan club behind. He promised them to perform his tricks again sometime in the future and told them that he would be more than honoured to see them at soccer practice next week. Blowing each of them a kiss, he heaved up his bag and hurried after Mori. ‘Just like in old times, eh…’

Seven years ago…

"Katagiri, it's your turn"

Taro hated the situation. Why did he join the baseball team anyway? His parents had told him to use the opportunity to befriend some of his schoolmates, but the sad truth was that his membership in the baseball team had actually gotten him more foes than friends. Taro was not a talented baseball player, as he was always nervous and afraid of failing and thus he never seemed to do anything right. He lost his nerves whenever he stood in the batter’s box and was in fact only useful for his team as an outfielder.

“Hit the ball Katagiri!”
“If you don’t, we’ll lose!”

Taro entered the batter's box with a painful expression on his face since he knew that the entire school’s hopes were weighing on his weak and slender shoulders. Wincing slightly, he watched the pitcher making some last preparations on the mound, and wished that he could somehow escape and travel to a distant country where no one could find him…Alaska, Siberia or perhaps Greenland…

“Strike one!”
It was a sinker.
“What are you doing, Taro?!”
“Swing your bat and hit it already!”

Taro was close to crying; tears welled up in his eyes. He was even too scared to look at the pitcher in front of him and could already tell that he was going to miss the next two balls, too.

“Strike two!”
This time, it was a slider.
In the meantime, his team mates had already given up on commenting on his actions and the students who had come to cheer for their team dejectedly buried their faces in their hands. ‘I’m sorry, everyone…’ thought Taro, both lips and limbs trembling.

“Strike three and you’re out!!”

The abrupt end of the game was just the beginning of a long, everlasting nightmare for Taro. His walk to the changing room was accompanied by loud catcalls, but he didn’t care. All he wanted was to be left alone and to flee into the world of books. Snatching his sports bag, he ran away as fast as he could, but accidentally bumped into a group of angry-looking boys.

============================

“Oy, wait! Let's walk home together, Mori!"

Stopping in her tracks, Manami looked over her shoulder and saw Taro waving goodbye to his loyal fangirls and blowing each of them a kiss, before making his way to her. As she waited for him to catch up, she noticed that the girls he left behind had their gazes fixed at her direction and they seemed to be emanating a deadly aura that had somehow turned the air icy cold. She shook her head as she turned away from their lethal stares. Only now had she realized that Taro's fanclub, aside from being totally rabid, could be downright scary.

"Are you sure it's okay to leave them there?" Manami asked when Taro had reached her. "If I get lynched by those girls tomorrow, I'm going to hold you responsible." Grinning at the bespectacled boy, she fell in step beside him as they began to head home.

As they walked, Manami gave Taro a discrete sidelong glance. Despite knowing him for almost seven years, there were still times when she found herself asking if this person next to her was really the same Katagiri Taro she had befriended back in fourth grade. It just seemed so surreal, because Taro then had been so different from what he was now. And she could still remember it so clearly...

"Congratulations to Minami Elementary school for winning the game today!"

Manami sunk in her seat as the crowd from the other side of the field erupted into wild cheers and celebration. Another lost game today. The results weren't so bad though -- the scores were really close until the end. But that did not keep her from feeling dejected. A heavy sigh escaped from the young girl's lips as she watched the winning team gather in the middle of the diamond and began throwing their pitcher in the air. How she wished that it was her school team doing that instead!

The crowd of spectators soon began piling out of the bleachers. Manami waited for the line to thin before making her way through the exit and into her school team's gathering area. Quite a number of her friends were in the baseball team and she figured that they needed some cheering up right now, especially with those gloomy looks on their faces. She suddenly stopped in her tracks when she spotted a boy being cornered by a group of burly, angry boys from the baseball team not far ahead.

"It's all your fault, Katagiri! If it wasn't for you, our team wouldn't have lost!"
"Didn't you ever learn how to bat properly?! Those balls were so easy to hit! Jeez!"

Manami could see that the poor boy was trembling in fear as the hurl of insults continued. Not being able to stand the sight, she marched over to where they were, and as she neared them, she realized that the boy being bossed around was none other than Katagiri Taro, the last batter who got called out in today's game. He was also her classmate, but she did not know him very well for he was often quiet and liked to sit at the back of the class. The leader of the bullies was Itou Akira, a cocky member of the baseball team who was in the class next to hers.

"Oi, Itou!" she called out crossly as she hurried to them. Planting herself between the group of boys and Taro, Manami had her arms folded over her chest as she faced the bullies with furrowed brows and a deep frown. "Stop giving Katagiri such a hard time just because he was struck out at the last inning," she said in a firm, defensive voice. "He played his best today and he doesn't need you guys insulting him like that."

OOC: Here comes another pathetic Taro post...
=====================
"Are you sure it's okay to leave them there? If I get lynched by those girls tomorrow, I'm going to hold you responsible."

"You won't be lynched, Mori. I know that you are a brave girl who knows how to defend herself," replied Taro, poking her shoulder with a mischievous grin. In spite of his grimace, he was very earnest when he said that she was a "brave girl".

"It's all your fault, Katagiri! If it wasn't for you, our team wouldn't have lost!"
"Didn't you ever learn how to bat properly?! Those balls were so easy to hit! Jeez!"

The funny thing about Taro’s current situation was that he couldn’t even defend himself because the boys were telling the truth. He knew that it was his fault, knew that the balls were actually easy to hit and that he was a walking failure for not succeeding. Although the boys didn’t hit him (they only pushed him a few times), he shielded his face with his arms and waited for them to leave him alone. Back then, his childish mind thought it was “fear” that made him feel so miserable, but in truth he was seized by a complex mixture between self-reproach, self-pity, self-hatred and self-consciousness.

"Oi, Itou! Stop giving Katagiri such a hard time just because he was struck out at the last inning. He played his best today and he doesn't need you guys insulting him like that."

The first thought which crossed Taro’s mind was that Mori resembled the heroes from Gundam series. In the dire hour of need, Mori seemed larger than life to Taro and he also thought that her silhouette was glowing. The boy gulped and waited for the boys to reply.

“Ooooh ~ Katagiri! Looks like you’ve got yourself a girlfriend!”
“I didn’t expect Mori to fall for such a weakling!”

Itou Akira told his friends to stop the mocking and sneered, “You’d better not return to the team again, Katagiri. You’re only a burden.”

When Itou and his friends were finally gone, Taro sank to the ground and, unable to hold back his emotions any longer, started to cry. Hot tears flowed down his cheeks in torrents; he tried to smile at Mori as a token of gratitude, and sobbed,

“Th-th-thank you, M-Mori-san…”

Back to the present...

"Why are you peering at me, Mori?" asked Taro when he noticed Mori observing him. "Do I have a pimple somewhere on my face?"

"Why are you peering at me, Mori? Do I have a pimple somewhere on my face?"

Manami blinked at Taro's serious, inquiring face and tried to suppress a grin from showing on her lips. He was still so self-conscious as ever. She couldn't exactly remember when Taro had begun to care about his appearance, but as far as she knew, he was so invested on looking his best that even a mere pimple could probably freak him out.

A sober expression crossed her features as she nodded at him gravely. "Yes, actually," she replied as she pointed at her forehead with her index finger. "You have one over here."

She maintained the serious face as she waited for his reaction. Would he be upset or would he just shove it off? Manami knew Taro liked to be the "cool guy" and he was good at pretending that nothing bothered him, but that wasn't always the case...

“Ooooh ~ Katagiri! Looks like you’ve got yourself a girlfriend!”
“I didn’t expect Mori to fall for such a weakling!”

The frown on young Manami's face deepened as she continued to glare at the bullying boys. She didn't actually mind being teased, but they still wouldn't quit mocking poor Taro. The jeers and the snickering faces were really getting on her nerves.

She was about to whip up a defensive retort when Itou suddenly held up a hand and told his underlings to stop. Sneering at Taro, he said, "You’d better not return to the team again, Katagiri. You’re only a burden."

Manami huffed angrily as the boys turned their backs and began walking off. Even if she wasn't initially involved in the whole ruckus, she felt like she had to do something for Taro. In attempts to somehow get even at the bullies for her classmate's sake, the young girl suddenly shouted after them, "Well, I wonder who got struck out during the team's very first inning, na Itou?! And you dare say Katagiri was terrible at batting!"

Itou spun around hastily, eyes burning with rage as he balled his fists. He was about to walk up to Manami and Taro again when his friends held him back and pointed ahead; apparently the coach was looking for him. He gave the duo one last glare before stalking off with his group.

"What a bunch of no-good idiots," Manami mumbled, utterly annoyed as she glowered at their retreating figures. Turning to Taro, her eyes widened in surprise when she saw the young boy on the ground, shaking slightly as he cried his eyes out. She crouched down before him, worriedly peering at his tear-stricken face when he suddenly gave her a small smile despite his sobs.

“Th-th-thank you, M-Mori-san…”

Manami shook her head as she gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "It's alright, Katagiri. Don't mind those losers. They just have nothing better to do." She put a hand inside her pocket and retrieved a handkerchief, which she handed to the sobbing boy with a gentle smile. "Here, use this for the meantime."

Taro was one of the few guys who were seldom afflicted with pimples as he always tried to eat a balanced, healthy diet. Therefore he was rather proud of his fair skin and never for a second believed that he would be particularly bothered by pustules. The question he had directed at Mori was merely meant as a joke, but Mori’s grave countenance and reply surprised him more than he liked. Unsettled by her suspicious behaviour, Taro frowned and fumbled for the alleged pimple on his forehead. With upturned eyes, he tried to catch a glance of the “scallywag” but it was of course impossible for him to discover it.

“Oh, whatever! I guess a pimple on the forehead isn’t that bad ~” Taro shrugged his shoulders nonchalantly and grinned at his friend. After initial uneasiness, he found the pimple – whose existence he still doubted – on his forehead rather amusing and made several lousy attempts to hide his forehead. “I’ll cover it up with my hair so the girls won’t see it. What do you think?” He fiddled with his hair and gave Mori an impish, inquiring look.

In the end, he never returned to the baseball team again. The team found a replacement for Taro a week after the lost match and celebrated several successes in the following years (one of them being the prefectural championship). Taro never regretted his resignation from the team; Itou and his gang stopped bullying him since he was not a millstone round the team’s neck anymore and his mortifying mistakes in the batter’s box were soon forgotten and never mentioned at school again. In spite of all the suffering the baseball team had caused him, he never regretted his time as a team member either, for if he hadn't been a member of the team, he would have never befriended Mori Manami.

"I’ll cover it up with my hair so the girls won’t see it. What do you think?”

Manami hummed softly, eyeing the boy beside her in amusement as he fiddled with his hair to hide the offending pimple. In all reality, there really wasn't anything marring Taro's forehead. She only uttered it on a whimsy to humor herself and see how he would react. And his responses were just as she had predicted (although he did not make such a big fuss about it this time compared to before).

It was one of the things that baffled Manami about the Taro now -- his overt concern about his appearance. The brunette found it so unnecessary because even without effort, Taro looked handsome enough to make heads turn.

"So self-conscious as ever," she said good-naturedly as she reached out a hand to ruffle his hair. Leaning closer, she lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "I was kidding about the pimple." Chuckling at her joke, Manami straightened up and diverted her attention towards the road again.

The sun was just beginning to set in the horizon, painting the sky with hues of deep orange and red, with hints of yellow. It stirred a sense of nostalgia in the sophomore pianist for she could still recall that the sky looked like this too when she had first walked home with Taro after she successfully got him to stop crying after that bullying incident. Back then, she had not imagined that her little deed would have any long term consequences, but it turned out that it became the catalyst for a solid friendship that would continue for seven years and counting.

When she spotted the familiar sign of the manga store she frequented just meters ahead, a delighted smile showed on her lips.

"Thank goodness they're still open," she mumbled in relief as she increased her pace. Looking over at Taro, she nudged him to walk faster as she pointed to the store. "Let's go there for a while; I need to check out something."

Pursing his lips like a small boy who had just been deprived of his favourite toy, Taro stared at Mori and complained, “Geez, Mori ~! Lying to your poor friend is not a good thing, you know?”

With his hands folded behind his head, Taro ambled alongside Mori until the latter suddenly accelerated her pace and hustled him into a manga store. Taro grumbled (his legs were aching after two hours of inhumane soccer practice) and reluctantly trudged after his friend into the cozy store. “Irashaimase ~” The cashier called, welcoming the two adolescents with a hearty smile and the prospect of selling a few new products to them. Posters of popular manga characters were hanging on the walls and dozens of recently published manga volumes were neatly piled up on a round table at the entrance. Not being a manga-addict (her preferred to use his allowance on clothes and dates with girls instead), Taro only checked the store once a month for the Newtype magazine, a magazine which contained lots of information on several mecha anime. Like many other boys, Taro was especially fond of the Gundam franchise but regretted the obvious quality loss of the latest series as they seemed to become more and more unrealistic and mere repetitions of older series. On his way to the magazine shelf, Taro almost upset a life-sized paper statue of Setsuna F. Seiei, the protagonist of Gundam 00. “Mori, what do you want to buy?” He called from behind the shelf as he leafed through the latest issue of Newtype. “Excuse me, I would like to buy this one here” he said, turning towards the female cashier behind the counter. The cashier was about his age and looked more like a trainee than a regular employee. Taro subconsciously adjusted his hair and necktie, leaned against the counter and remarked,

“People always say that bishoujos only exist in manga and anime. Is that true? I don't believe them because I see a perfect counterevidence right in front of me ~”

Manami answered the cashier's bright greeting with a slight nod of the head and a cheerful smile, before her feet took her to the round table sitting at the middle of the store. New arrivals and recently-published volumes were neatly stacked up in all the available spaces of the table and their colorful, attractive covers seemed to shine under the glare of the fluorescent light. She vaguely heard Taro's voice from one of the shelves, asking her what she wanted to buy.

"Ookiku," came her distracted reply, as she looked through the piles of tankoubon for the familiar title. She soon spotted it in one of the bottom compartments of the round table, sitting quietly in all its brand-new, plastic-covered grandeur. A delighted smile ran on her lips as she grabbed a copy from the middle of the pile. After straightening her uniform (which became slightly rumpled after she peered under the table), she glanced at the other titles on display, randomly grabbing books and reading through their summaries before putting them back and finally walking towards the counter.

“People always say that bishoujos only exist in manga and anime. Is that true? I don't believe them because I see a perfect counterevidence right in front of me ~”

Manami hit her forehead with her palm as soon as she saw the sight ahead. Taro was leaning against the counter, gazing flirtatiously at the cashier, who looked about the same age as them. The latter had a shy smile smile on her flushing face, and she seemed at a loss on how to react to the young man's bold advances.

Manami tsked, shaking her head at Taro's notorious womanizing as she fell in line behind him. She noisily cleared her throat, breaking the intense romantic atmosphere that was just beginning to brew between the two. When the cashier turned to her with a startled and slightly embarrassed look on her face, Manami smiled innocently as she placed the tankoubon onto the counter. "I'd like to buy this please."

The cashier, who was at a loss for words, only replied with a shy, indulgent smile and handed over the change to the odd, but nevertheless attractive customer. Although she often helped out at her parents' manga store, this was the first time a customer had compared her to a bishoujo - and a handsome customer into the bargain! The new experience embarrassed her immensely but even her beet-red cheeks could not conceal the pleasure she was feeling (which girl did not like to be complimented on once in a while?).

For the next few minutes, neither of them said a word; Taro's sharp, green eyes were completely absorbed in the girl, who, although pretending to be busy with the cash register, in turn would give him a clandestine look from time to time. At this moment, a loud, disturbing harrumph sounded from behind, nipping his little romance in the bud.

"I'd like to buy this please."

The romantic atmosphere evaporated; and little Romeo scowled angrily at his childhood friend who had appeared from nowhere.

"Tsk...! Mori, didn't you see how infatuated she was with me? Show some tact, please..." he whispered into her ear, tapping his foot annoyingly. His anger soon wore off though, since he could never be cross with Mori for very long. When another customer asked the cashier for help, he turned around to his friend and grinned,

"Why didn't you tell me about the comely shop assistant? If female otakus are so attractive, I think I'll turn into an otaku, too ~"

Tsk...! Mori, didn't you see how infatuated she was with me? Show some tact, please..."

Manami met Taro's scowl with an impeccant "what-did-I-do" look. Taking his annoyed complaint in stride, she turned her attention from him to the rather flustered cashier who was straightening herself and pretending nothing had happened as she scanned the barcode of the tankoubon into the cash register. The girl's discrete gazes at Taro while she took the payment from Manami's outstretched hand and placed the purchase into a medium-sized plastic bag did not escape Manami's keen, observant eyes. The brunette could only sigh and shake her head at this; her friend had managed to illusion another innocent, unknowing girl yet again.

As soon as the cashier turned to the next customer in line (but not after a quick glance at Taro, Manami noticed), Taro almost immediately gushed about his "realization for the day" to his friend.

"Why didn't you tell me about the comely shop assistant? If female otakus are so attractive, I think I'll turn into an otaku, too ~"

Manami shook her head at him as she tucked the receipt and change in her purse. "Spare her the grief, will you, Katagiri?" She gave him a pointed look before depositing the purse inside her bag. Afterward, she grabbed the plastic-bagged tankoubon from the counter and led Taro away from the cashier's earshot.

"Really, you should give your womanizing a rest and give the ladies a break. You have enough girls fawning over you already!" The earlier encounter with Taro's rabid fanclub crossed Manami's mind once again and she could only wonder why those girls were so infatuated with her childhood friend. (If they only knew what he was really like, she couldn't help but think).

She stole a glance at the cashier, who was assisting another customer, and added, "Besides, that girl's really nice and I wouldn't want her to cry because of you."

“Hai, Hai, Onee-saaamaaa ---!” replied Taro in a seemingly obedient tone and shuffled his friend out of the store. He had the premonition that Mori was going to deliver a sermon about his questionable behaviour again and warn him how easily his incorrigible womanizing could hurt the lovestruck ladies.

Although he partially understood her point of view and appreciated the advice, he was irritated that she had to complicate everything by assuming that all the girls he flirted with wanted to get seriously involved with him. Had he ever raised any hopes, suggested that he was looking for a “real” girlfriend or intending to marry one of them? No. Moreover, it was common knowledge that he liked to flirt with various girls, never favouring one in particular. The girls enjoyed flirting with him, he enjoyed flirting with them – it was a win-win situation without any obligations and neither party would ever dream of a serious relationship like Mori feared.

The tone in which his best friend spoke slightly offended him because it seemed to suggest that he was an evil scoundrel who took advantage of innocent girls when he was in truth only trying to entertain the girls whose smiles in turn were the best self-affirmation he could ask for.

“Don’t be so stiff, Mori, you sound like my mother. The girls know it's nothing serious and enjoy it," he opened his arms as a gesture of reconciliation, "so calm down and stop worrying, Mori ~ It's not like I am a hardcore womanizer who changes girlfriends every week”

Manami let her best friend usher her out of the manga store and from the corner of her eye, she could see him bobbing his head as he uttered an obedient and rather drawn-out "Hai, Hai, Onee-saaamaaa ---!". Taro's concession sounded sincere enough, but Manami knew all too well that Taro really did not take her advices to heart.

How long had she and Taro been through this? Manami could barely count the number of times she had advised him to tone down his flirting with girls. It wasn't that she was trying to ruin his fun; she was merely concerned about the possible consequences that could result from such 'games'. There was, of course, the possibility that the some of the girls he flirted with might end up believing that he was seriously interested in them, which would only end up in the girls being heartbroken. And then there's the reverse situation - Taro could end up falling for a girl who flirts around like he does, which would probably break his heart as well.

Perhaps she might be getting ahead of herself and being too paranoid about the whole thing, but there were times when Manami could not help but worry about Taro and his sometimes careless actions. Ever since she had saved him from those bullies, she had always felt this strong responsibility to look after him, like an older sister would to a younger brother. Even now that they're in high school, Manami still felt that she had to keep Taro out of trouble and prevent him from doing anything that he would regret later on.

“Don’t be so stiff, Mori, you sound like my mother. The girls know it's nothing serious and enjoy it. So calm down and stop worrying, Mori ~ It's not like I am a hardcore womanizer who changes girlfriends every week.”

"Correction -- you *are* a womanizer," Manami mumbled, putting emphasis on 'are' to get her point across. "Maybe not that hardcore but a womanizer nevertheless." She stole a glance at him and upon seeing his gesture of reconciliation, she heaved a conceding sigh.

"Oh okay, I'll stop worrying about it." she finally said, managing a small smile. "You're old enough to know what to do and it's not as if you listen to what I say anyway." Letting out a soft chuckle, she nudged him to get going as she padded towards the sidewalk.
