Why, Hihara thought, do I have the feeling that I'm growing butterflies in my stomach? Two girls passed him. They were laughing openly, causing Hihara to wonder what they were talking about. His eyes followed them for a minute, then he sat back in his chair. Seated at an outdoor cafe, his arms rested on a steel bistro table and it was there he waited for Kahoko. The two students had agreed to meet at the cafe at Hihara's suggestion. Located not too far from the music shop Kahoko had once suggested they check for music, Hihara thought it a good location to meet. And so he waited. In his excitement he had arrived early, several minutes early. He scratched at the bridge of his nose and chuckled. He turned his attention to his reflection in the glass of the table. Both hands strayed to his hair to smooth down stray strands of green hair. To his amusement one strand popped back up, but the unruly hair remained in place the next time one of Hihara's hands brushed over it. Am I really this worried? he asked himself as he glanced down at his clothes--jeans and a yellow polo shirt. I must be. Taking a deep breath Hihara forced his gaze from his reflection to the sky. The blue of the sky was calming and Hihara felt his emotions relax. Forget your crush, Kazuki! This is a time for friends to hang out. Don't analyze it. And with that Hihara put his budding romantic feelings away and prepared to look toward the day with friendship. And he was ready to have some fun while he was at it. |

Freed from the confines of her school uniform, Kahoko had dressed for the day in a floaty, knee-length dress covered with a short jacket to ward against the autumn’s occasional chill. As she headed toward the café where she had agreed to meet her senior, she hoped she wasn’t late- checking her watch proved that she still had a minute or two to spare before their appointed arrival time. But upon looking up, she saw a familiar shock of green hair—her companion for the afternoon’s activities had already seated himself and was now waiting on her. This is going to be such fun! I’m so glad he came! Grinning broadly at him, Kahoko waved and jogged in his direction, sitting down in the chair opposite from Hihara. She was delighted that the senior had taken time out of his busy schedule to spend with her, and was pleased that he seemed to want to extend and nurture their friendship after the concours had ended. “Good afternoon, senpai! I hope I didn’t make you wait too long,” she greeted him as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and eyed the menu. A waiter in uniform came to take their drink orders and offer the special of the day almost as soon as Kahoko had sat down, but he had obviously misinterpreted (or interpreted more correctly than either of them could possibly guess) their relation to each other. “And what will it be for the happy couple, hm?” [ooc: I went ahead and destroyed Hihara's chances of forgetting about his feelings right off the bat. Oops? Feel free to play with the waiter too!] |

Nothing could have prepared Hihara for Kahoko's appearance--even if she had arrived at the arranged time. For some reason, which he knew to be very obtuse of him, he had expected Kahoko to be wearing her school uniform. Why, he couldn't quite say, and he felt all the more an idiot for the assumption. Just because it was normal to see her wearing a school uniform (go figure, because they were at school) didn't mean she would wear it outside of school. While still silent berating himself for his moment of sheer air-headedness, he turned a signature charismatic smile on Kahoko. "Ah, good afternoon!" he said in jubilant tones. Hihara indicated a chair for Kahoko to sit and started to rise to politely pull out said chair, but Kahoko did not seem to notice and seated herself. The senior quickly sat back down before even getting halfway up and also turned his eye to the menu, though he admittedly kept one eye on Kahoko. He gave a soft laugh and leaned back in his chair. "Don't worry, I didn't wait long for you. I got here a little early, but it's a nice day out so it wasn't any trouble on my part." And true to his word, Hihara was not trouble in the least. Being put out for such a small matter hardly ever occurred to the him. It seemed so unimportant to him, the matter of waiting a few extra minutes. Besides, why regret something he had enjoyed? Not only were those minutes precursors to the time he would spend with Kahoko, but the weather truly was good and it felt rejuvenating to be outdoors in good weather. "Hey...you know..." Hihara laid his menu down on the table and settled his gaze on Kahoko's face. But before Hihara could say anything more and waiter, dressed smartly in his uniform, approached. Hihara felt his ears heat up at the waiter's words. "And what will it be for the happy couple, hm?" Please don't let me blushing. But he was blushing, and so much for his resolution to not over-think his relationship with Kahoko. What with the waiter all but throwing the concept in his face it was all Hihara could do to keep from letting thoughts of them being a couple consume the entirety of his attention. As it was, when he spoke he stuttered a little. He silently deplored his embarrassment. "W-we...I..." The waiter subtly raised an eyebrow and turned to Kahoko. "Perhaps it would be more polite of me to get the lady's order first?" {Poor Hihara. XD But I don't mind that he must suffer. It makes it more fun. I guess I didn't really do much with the waiter, but I wasn't sure what else to do with him. With his first words being something that made Hihara nervous/embarrassed/what-have-you I didn't think the two would start up some jolly conversation or anything. o.O That and I just...ran out of posting juice. XD } |

"Oh, I'm glad you didn't mind... I could have taken the bus and got here faster but it's so pretty out that I decided to walk, so it took a bit longer," she admitted with a smile, smoothing back her wind-blown hair before taking a look at the menu. She lifted her head, however, when Hihara began to speak, and listened attentively to whatever he was about to say- until the waiter arrived and completely distracted her. She watched as Hihara's face turned a (rather becoming) deep shade of red, and she felt her cheeks burning in similar embarrassment as her gaze skittered away from her tongue-tied senpai to the waiter in question. Hihara-senpai was probably embarrassed that the waiter had even made such a bold assumption- after all, Kahoko was just his junior, and a friend, and he surely didn't think of her that way... did he? "C- cou-" She stammered out, blinking rapidly up at the waiter. Couple? He thinks we're a couple? Of course, as that concept was put into her mind rather forcefully and abruptly, she couldn't help but think back to that night when his face had been so close to hers, neither of them moving, neither of them even breathing until Tsuchiura-kun hauled Hihara-senpai off her... "Cou- cu-repes! Crepes!" She exclaimed, attempting to recover and remember she was supposed to order. "I'llhavethesweetandsavorycrepeduetplease." Her words came out in a rush, and it was even more unfortunate that the title of the entree had the word "duet" in it, because now she was also thinking of their recent rooftop engagement and how lovely it had been... so distracted was she, as she bit her lower lip and looked down at the menu fixedly, that she had completely failed to deny that Hihara and she were only friends, and not, in fact, dating! "Very well, miss," the waiter said, inclining his head toward Hihara. "Would sir like to share her platter, or order for himself?" {No worries, Kahoko doesn't have a clue what to say to the waiter either... of course, she didn't deny them being together right off the bat, so LET YOUR MIND STEW OVER THAT ONE, HIHARA! XD } |

Hihara shoved his jumble of thoughts to one side and focused on the waiter. It did sting his ego a little to be be rendered so inarticulate in front of both Kahoko and a total stranger, but only a little. His biggest worry was what Kahoko would think of his stuttering embarrassment. He doubted she would look down on him for his reaction--she had never seemed to be that sort of person since Hihara had come to know her. However, she may take his reaction as a sign that he didn't have any particular feelings for her. She might then never attempt to pursue a relationship, if she herself had any interest in him. Or what if she realized he did like her? What if she started to avoid him? How would he-- Stop! You're just going to drive yourself crazy with the "what if's"! Perhaps it would be harder to focus on the waiter than he thought. While Kahoko was busy giving her order (and Hihara noticed her own nervousness as she answered in what sounded like one very long word) Hihara took a deep breath to calm his mind. Just be yourself, he told himself. Let things be or it might go downhill from here. "Would sir like to share her platter, or order for himself?" The waiter had turned to him, his gaze friendly yet somehow neutral. Huh, I guess that's all right. "I'll take a Cherry-Cheese pastry ring," he said, one hand brushing over the name of the baked good on the menu. "And some water." "Of course," the waiter nodded, and excused himself from their table. Despite the awkward start, Hihara found himself grinning. He couldn't help himself. He was excited and looking forward to the the day's adventure. A little hitch in the road wasn't going to put off Hihara for long. "If you want to try the pastry ring when it gets here, go ahead," he turned a friendly smile on Kahoko. |

Hihara seemed much calmer than she had been by the time he ordered, and Kahoko made a little moue of embarrassment before she could stop herself, hoping against hope that her senior hadn’t noticed the way she’d tripped over her words. She’d had no idea how to go about correcting the waiter’s assumptions, and had thought just breezing past the hiccup best. What if she offended Hihara-senpai with a too-quick denial—although that didn’t make a ton of sense to her brain, because why would he be offended that she’d told the truth, unless saying it so quickly would imply that she found the idea of going out with him distasteful, which was categorically untrue—wait, it was? Back up, brain. How had she come to that conclusion? She’d never thought about Hihara-senpai in that way… had she? Or had she offended him already by not saying anything? Best not to think about it, or she’d drive herself crazy going round in circles. Unproductive circles. And possibly go cross-eyed in the process. Focus, Kaho, focus! “Maybe I will- it sounds really good!” She replied to the offer with eager delight, her stomach almost rumbling its agreement (although, thankfully, a quick hand to her abdomen suppressed that noise). “And the same goes for you, if you want to try my crepes.” Kahoko still hadn’t thought things through- sharing their plates would only reinforce the idea to all those around them, the waiter included, that they were a pair of young lovers out on a date. |

"I attest to its goodness," Hihara gave Kahoko a mock-conspiratorial grin. "I have been here before, after all." He leaned back in his chair, effecting a casual air he did not really feel. In all honesty, there were still knots of butterflies in his stomach from the waiter's suppositions, and it took more effort than Hihara would have liked to push those ideas from his mind. For a moment he simultaneously wanted to declare his love to her and retreat back to the safety of friendship that was nothing more than friendship. A nagging voice whispered, Ah, get over it, Hihara. She probably has her sights set higher than you, anyway. Mental shrugging off his quiet dread those words, Hihara looked out at the street. Without realizing it he started talking--not about anything in particular, but the non-essential sort of chat Hihara easily slipped into with the people he thought of as his friends. He mentioned that it was his brother who had first brought him to this place, about their outing that day. Hihara talked about school; both about his experiences or things other music students were up to. The whole time he talked a smile remained carved on his face: a smile Hihara was known for. At time both hands moved as he talked, punctuating his dialogue. There was a pause in his running monologue and it hit Hihara that he had been doing most of the talking. He hoped he hadn't been cutting Kahoko of when she wanted to speak. He colored slightly and immediately apologized. "I didn't mean to ramble like that. Sorry!" A little smile remained his his face, but it was clearly somewhat self-deprecating. It was at that moment the waiter arrived back at the table, bringing with him both Hihara and Kahoko's orders. "Thank you for waiting. Here you go. Enjoy." Leaving an obligatory reminder that should they need anything else he wouldn't be too far away, the waiter once again left the table to continue on with his work. Hihara gulped his water and with a gusty sigh set the glass down on the table. He pushed his plate closer to Kahoko. "You can try it first, if you'd like." |

“And I believe you,” Kahoko said with a showy wink toward her friend. “Always trust the expert,” she added with a firm nod. She listened avidly as Hihara talked, smiling and nodding occasionally to show she was engaged, piping up with a question or comment when necessary, but mostly just content to listen to his mellow yet enthusiastic voice as the breeze gently batted strands of her hair around her face. Hearing Hihara-senpai open up to her more about his life and his interests in general was really enjoyable, and she was actually surprised when he began to apologize. “Are you kidding?” She asked, blinking at him in astonishment. “I love listening to your stories! You tell them so well,” she elaborated, mimicking one of the dramatic hand gestures he’d used to spice up his conversation. Later, when she’d regained her senses, she would never be able to tell you what possessed her to do it. Possibly it was the mood, however accidental, that the waiter had set by his innocent commentary- perhaps she was just feeling impulsive, or was driven by a need to get closer to her senior. Who knew? But when Hihara offered his plate to her and she pushed hers toward him in turn, a mischievous sparkle lit in her eyes and she stole her senpai’s fork, deftly cutting off a piece of crepe and spearing it, then leaning slightly across the table and waving the morsel in front of his lips. “If you won’t try it, I’ll have to make you try it!” She declared, knowing Hihara’s protests would be weak, since he loved food just as much as she did, especially sweets. It had half-crossed her mind that what she was doing- attempting to feed him from her plate by hand- might be misinterpreted, but she wasn’t stopping, despite the blush that had taken up residence on her face again when it began to dawn on her. Kahoko was no coward, not anymore, and letting a silly thing like social awkwardness stop her wasn’t happening! Not today! It was too gorgeous outside, and she was going to have too much fun with the senior to let the mood be ruined. |

"Ah, my fork!" Hihara halfheartedly lunged for the fork Kahoko had swiped out from under hand nose, so to speak. The tips of his fingers brushed the cool metal of the fork, but he was unable to get even a tentative grasp on it. "I was going to use that," he continued in a teasing whine as he watched Kahoko cut one of the crepes and uses his pilfered fork to pick up the crepe piece, "but I guess I could use my hands." He laughed a little, but the laughter stuck in his throat when Kahoko leaned toward him and waved the forkful of crepe in front of his mouth. Mouth water and heart pounding, Hihara glanced between the offered food and Kahoko's face. She was bushing, but seemed like she intended to persist with hand feeding him the crepe. "If you won't try it, I'll have to make you try it!" she declared, her face still red but her eyes shining from the fun she was having. Hihara's good nature couldn't resist and he laughed again. His embarrassment took a back seat to his desire to have a good time, and he gave Kahoko mild protests: "But I can't!," "But those are yours!" and he couldn't resist adding "Crepes are my weakness and will weaken my super powers." Those mild protests, however, were nothing more than talk, and from the way Kahoko did not back down she must have known it. The trumpet player eyes the crepe for a moment and, after his moment's thought, brazenly snagged the crepe off the end of the fork. Wearing a confident smile, Hihara rested an elbow on the table and held out a hand; a silent request for his fork to be returned. He didn't know if Kahoko would capitulate and return the fork to him, but in all honestly he didn't really care. What was important was the fun of the moment, hanging out with a good friend, albeit a good friend he had a vast crush on. "You know," he added slyly, a large smile blooming on his face, "It's only fair that I return your kindness and steal your fork." Without giving Kahoko time to save her own fork, Hihara snatched it and used it to pick up a piece of his Cherry-Cheese Ring. He held it out to Kahoko, and he was still grinning--thankful he was able to keep his blushing to a minimum. |

"I'll give it back to you when I'm finished," Kahoko replied, more calmly than she felt, "although watching you attempt to eat it with your hands would be amusing. "But you can, and technically they're yours, too, since I offered," she countered, prodding his sealed lips with the savory morsel as she thought about how to respond to Hihara's claim to superpowers. "C'mon... please? For me? I promise to protect you in your weakened state... although I've never seen you leap tall buildings in a single bound, you know. Are you sure your superpower isn't eating a ton of food and somehow miraculously remaining skinny?" She asked, sighing in mock regret. If only she knew Hihara's secret, she, too, could gorge herself on sweets on a regular basis without being forced to take jogs around the block out of guilt. But she grinned in delight when the senior's protests died out and he ate the crepe off the stolen fork, watching his his mouth close over the treat with perhaps more prurient interest than was appropriate. There was just something about his mouth that was fascinating- possibly it was the way he used his technique from his instrument to shape the way he spoke and ate outside the music room, she wasn't sure. "Alright, you can have it back now," she agreed, being kind and handing the fork back to him, only to squeak in protest as her fork was suddenly stolen from right under her. But that's not fair, she wanted to cry, you can't have two! However, she rapidly remembered that just moments ago, she had been the one with two forks, and stifled her complaints. "Hey!" She exclaimed, thinking of reasons to tease him back. "I can't protect you from danger in your superpowerless state if I'm too fat to walk." Resting her chin on her fist, her gaze flitted from Hihara's grinning face to the bite of dessert on her fork. It looked really delicious, and she caved in as he must have known she would, rounding her lips and using her teeth to scrape the bite off the fork. "Mm," she hummed, rolling the bite around in her mouth to taste it more fully, "that is really good." |

"Mmn, that is really good," Kahoko said and Hihara smiled. A faint thrill of pleasure washed down Hihara's spine when Kahoko gave in at ate the dessert piece he held in front of her face. He was glad she like it; he would have felt had at making her eat something that in the end she wouldn't like. And he would feel a little bad for himself, too. After all, he was glad that he and Kahoko liked some of the same things. Even if it was something as silly as a pastry. "I don't think you'll get fat," he said honestly. He hadn't thought about that sort of thing, and he was surprised that Kahoko was worried about it; certainly it wasn't one of his first thoughts when he ate food he liked. But it interested him, learning this new thing about Kahoko. He liked knowing more about her aside from what he knew of her from the concours. "And my super powers are a s-e-c-r-e-t," Hihara teased as he started to eat the pastry he had ordered. It was as good as he remembered. "Just speaking about it like this is a danger to me. Who knows what enemies might be lurking." "But I trust you!" Hihara laughed a little. "I bet you can protect me even though I am now weak. You'd be surprised. I bet you have super powers, too." Adding teasingly, he said, "And staying skinny is just a side-effect of my powers." Pausing in his eating, Hihara leaned back and sighed contentedly. "So, what sort of music do you think we'll find at the shop? I'm excited to see what might be there." (Sorry I didn't post sooner. I've been sick. >.<) |

Kahoko looked down at her crepe tray when her senior told her he didn't think she needed to worry about her weight. "It's a very cliche 'girl' thing to worry about, I know," she said wryly, flushing a little. "Maybe if I was on track and field or soccer or... any sport at all, really... I wouldn't worry so much because I'd burn so many calories. Sadly, my lack of coordination rules that out." Despite her words, Kahoko didn't sound all that sad about not being athletic. Perhaps it was the painful experience of too many gym balls whacking her in the face that led her to shy away from sports, but regardless of the cause, she'd come to peace with her own clumsiness. Besides, occasionally it helped her meet people, although admittedly it wasn't the best first impression ever, to be tripping over your own two feet... still, Tsuchiura-kun hadn't minded, and neither had Hihara when she'd fallen on hi- no. No, best not to think about that now, or her cheeks were going to turn as red as that cherry-cheese ring filling. "Oh, of course they are. Do forgive me. I didn't mean to endanger you by speaking of them in public. And superpowers myself? Doubtful. Although I live in hope..." She wasn't exactly sure how this conversation had gone from food to superheroes. Although if staying skinny truly was a superpower, she'd be eternally jealous of Hihara for having it when, as a man, he really didn't need it. Replying at last to Hihara's question about what sort of music they might expect to find, she said eagerly, "Oh, the owner gets in new pieces all the time. I always find something I was looking for but didn't know I needed when I browse, if that makes any sense. He has a lot of really convenient transcriptions for different instruments, too... hmm, although I probably shouldn't say the pieces are 'new' if they're classical, right? Maybe if we're lucky, you'll get to see the video of Tsuchiura-kun playing when he was this tall," she said, grinning, holding her hand at roughly table-height. And even better, the boy in question wouldn't be there to snap at them and bat their hands away. [[GOMEN. SOOO SORRY FOR THE DELAY. *FLAILS*]] |

[[It's okay. I was a bit worried about you, though. XD ]] "That would be hilarious!" Hihara rocked back in his seat, grinning vividly at the thought of the video. "I know he seems to be embarrassed or something about that, and it just makes me more eager to see that video. I bet he was pretty good even as a kid, right? The way he plays music on the piano is amazing now. I wouldn't be surprised if he was good back then, too. It makes me a little envious sometimes, that he could be around music since he was small, but I don't think I would change how I came to the trumpet. I like how things have turned out for me and I wouldn't want to change that." Pausing, the boy thought for a moment and his grin grew wider. He tried to hide a chuckled, but couldn't keep it back. If he did happen to watch that video when Tsuchiura wasn't around...well, what could the gen-ed student do to change the past? Nothing! This little bit of artifice--if it could even be called such a thing--filled Hihara with a sense of adventure. As if he were a spy. "And if he isn't there he can't stop me," Hihara added as an afterthought, not realizing he was echoing some of Kahoko's own personal thoughts. Finishing off his food, Hihara gave a contented sigh, settling his fork back down on his plate. Adjusting his position on his chair, Hihara leaned forward and proper his elbow on the table next to his plate and rested his chin in the palm of one hand. "So we could find something completely unexpected?" a note of excitement crept into Hihara's voice. "If that is the case then maybe while we're there I will find something for myself as well. I would love to have something new to try out for the next time I practice. Who knows? Maybe I'll find the most amazing piece of trumpet music yet and wow the student body with it once I have mastered it," Hihara knew he was dreaming a little too much, but it was fun all the same. And it never hurt to dream big from time to time either. With that thought he glanced at Kahoko, his thoughts sneaking back to the possibility of deepening the relationship between them both, but he chased those thoughts away quickly. He didn't need to help walk himself into saying something stupid. "Whenever you're finished I'm ready to go find that shop!" he said, his voice sparked with his enthusiasm. |

“He was really good,” Kahoko confirmed, tilting her head as she listened to Hihara talk about his own encounter with the trumpet. “Yes, I know what you mean on both accounts! I do wish sometimes that I’d had my violin growing up and wondered ‘what if’, but then I might not have met everyone this way during the concours, and I wouldn’t want to change the experiences I’ve had as a result of starting now, or the friendships I’ve formed.” Such as the one she currently shared with her vibrant sempai, who even now was surely entertaining mischievous thoughts about the video she’d mentioned. It seemed she knew her senior too well, or perhaps, she thought, just well enough to predict his thought patterns. “No, he most certainly can’t. And he never has to know,” she echoed with a conspiratorial wink. “I won’t tell if you don’t. And you’re absolutely right, I never know what I’m going to find there, so… who knows? It could be anything! If it’s Hihara-sempai, it’s possible,” Kahoko concluded with a firm nod. She was endeared forever to the little music shop because of the faithful dedication of its owner to both students with their instruments and continuing a virtual revolving door of excellent pieces she’d never seen before. He not only stocked the expected classics for each instrument, he also had sections of transpositions and arrangements of standards and some modern technical pieces for electric violin (something Kahoko wasn’t sure she was quite brave enough to try)! Pushing her chair back from the table, she wiped her mouth delicately with her napkin and set her silverware atop her empty plate, opening her purse to fetch the correct amount for her water and light lunch. After she’d left the money tucked under a corner of the plate for the waiter to see, she stood, almost wanting to hold a hand out to Hihara so they could join together on this new adventure, she felt so spirited. But that was perhaps quite silly, and she shook her head to clear it of that thought. “I’m absolutely ready!” With that, she embarked, walking in a contented post-meal silence, the slight breeze ruffling her hair and her dress, knowing the music store was only a short distance away. It was a peaceful sort of day, but there was anticipation in the air- or perhaps that was just her imagination running wild again. It did that sometimes, completely without her permission. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of the music store. “After you,” she said, smiling, holding the door for her senior. [ooc: I hope it's okay that I moved them along to the next location; if you want them to talk on the way there, feel free to write in dialogue and I'll have Kahoko respond to it!] |

[[It's perfectly fine. I have no idea what I would have Hihara talk about on the way, anyway, and I was hoping to just have them move on anyway. XD ]] "Why, thank you," Hihara executed a mock bow in Kahoko's direction, a genuine smile brilliant on his face. "How kind of you." The happy-go-lucky senior strode into the store, his eyes hungrily jumping from one sight to another inside the store. His eyes shone with an excited light as he stepped to one side of the doorway, giving Kahoko room to come in behind him. For Hihara, he always felt excited in a music store, no matter how many times he had been there. He supposed it was the way someone might feel on entering a bookstore or a clothing department store--but being surrounded by so many objects related to music set his mind buzzing. Turning to Kahoko Hihara waved his hand in a general motion to indicate the interior of the store. "I've just walked in and I'm already excited," he admitted to her. He gave a soft chuckle and added, "Though I guess that isn't much of a surprise. I'm always excited." At that moment, the store owner came into sight from somewhere. Then again, Hihara knew there was a strong chance he had simply been oblivious enough not to notice the owner when he and Kahoko had first entered. Hihara offered a friendly wave toward the elderly man and, naturally, he bore a smile on his face. "Hey!" he greeted the owner with the full force of his friendly personality.
