Um. I'm Avarice. -waves-. I'm thirteen. I'm in the eighth grade right now, and I take two classes at the high school, mathematics and English. My name is another fancy word for 'greed'. I can play three instruments, not counting my I recently applied for Fuyuumi Shouko. Uh... yeah. I figured you guys needed someone to come be a canon, and I was thinking about auditioning for Tsukimori, but there was only one girl (Hino) taken so I wanted to even the canon-gender balance, I guess. Plus, I'm basically the complete opposite of Fuyuumi in real life. I figured that if I were accepted I might be able to get out of my box a little bit. I don't really have much issues at school -- my abilities in all my subjects are fairly equal. I enjoy memorizing things out of boredom, but I can only recite two poems and a couple quotes right now (and the first 100 digits of pi). I'm working on memorizing "what a piece of work is a man..." (from Hamlet) and Coleridge's Xanadu poem right now. I love to read, and my favorite book is Alice in Wonderland. But I do like the classics in general. Especially the Russian classics... I read multiple books at one time, but I'm trying to finish a couple philosophy books, books on physics and string theory, Catch-22 and The Master and Margarita. I've read the libretto to the opera Eugene Onegin (and some of the English translation) online. I really enjoyed it. I'm also trying to finish the text of Hamlet. I enjoy languages and know some Spanish, French, and German, but I am planning on formally studying Japanese and Spanish next year in high school. I'm spontaneous, have a short attention span towards things that bore me, and I easily weird people out. Are you weirded out yet? Asides from literature and music, my other main interests are psychology, philosophy, and quantum physics. I really am only a dilettante in all of these, but I enjoy existentialism and utilitarianism. I'm not a very rampantly emotional or neurotic person, except when it comes to I and my perfectionism. My writing style is postmodernist, sometimes surrealist, so sorry if you have an issue with understanding whatever I write. XD. It verges on light stream-of-consciousness. Uh, I'm going to end it here. Don't want to get killed for rambling. Cheers! |

Hi, Avarice! I'm Rin; nice to meet you. (: For a thirteen-year-old, you seem insanely smart (in the best way possible, of course!). And you're in the eighth grade too, huh? You must live in the U.S., like me. (Or maybe not?!)We're also guilty of rambling a lot. So no worries; we won't kill you for rambling. ^^ ...And I also wish I had made my own newbie post long and informative, like all the newbies seem to be doing these days. XD;; Oh, well. Maybe I'll edit it... someday.... I've understood everything you've said so far (and I even knew what 'avarice' meant before you stated the definition; do I get bonus points? XD), so it's all good. A Len roleplayer would've been awesome, but Shouko is great too. ^^ That said, I liked your application. I'm not part of the application process, but there's a huge chance you'll be accepted. Most definitely. Edited by Fahrin, Mar 19 2009, 02:50 AM.

Hey Avarice~ Welcome to BNB! Feel free to call me Yian. :3 Something that really surprised me about your introduction was your level of language and understanding of complex concepts. Are you sure you're only thirteen? You sound extremely intelligent, and I'm impressed by the readings you've done. When I was in eighth grade, I took U.S. History and English at the high school also, as part of a Pre-AP program. It's kinda coincidental, isn't it? I'm also really impressed that you're interested in psychology, philosophy, and quantum physics. Few people these days would take interest in such complex topics. And you even know such things as postmodernism, surrealism and existentialism? Those were things I've only heard of in the two years of my high school career. xD I actually had to write essays based on postmodernism and existentialism before. D-Do I sound creepy yet? I apologize. I'm in awe of your intelligence. 8D;; And you're really only thirteen? I swear, my history teacher would love to have you as a student; you sound perfect for her class. Anyway, your writing style looks excellent as well. You would have made a great Tsukimori, but Fuyuumi is a lovely character as well. We're in dire need of some female canons. I look forward to being able to roleplay with you one day. ^^ |

@Fahrin: Hey Rin! :D Thank you for your compliments, but no, I am not insanely smart. Hah. Just mildly intelligent. And yes, I live in the US. I refuse to divulge any more of my location, but I'll probably say I live in the thirteenth dimension to anyone else who asks. xD. -gives bonus points-. Thanks for the compliments on my application. :D I'm real excited and hope I get accepted as an RPer. Everyone here seems so nice. @Yian-San: Thank you. I don't get to take history at the high school, but they put me on alternate curriculum in that class, and also for a temporary period in science. That's interesting that you had to write essays on those. I, unfortunately, have not had the chance to write essays on those things except on this one test for eighth graders to make sure we were literate and all (hah). So I wrote about that on there. Like I said, though, I'm pretty much a dilettante. Most of my interests in psychology are the developmental kind (cognitive and behavioral in particular), and philosophy is mostly restricted to nihilism, existentialism, and utilitarianism. My ethics are subject to change as per my explanations, but usually I am an act utilitarian. You shouldn't be in awe of my intelligence. Einstein was a genius, not I... Ran[dumb] Question: How old are both of you, and I'm going to assume you're both girls...? Sorry, I can't tell, your names are pretty unisex. XD. Sorry if that was rude. |

R-really...? Rin is a unisex name? XD;; I've only ever seen it used for girls, but, haha... I'm not Japanese, so I wouldn't know. ^^; Oh, so I guess that answers your question. ^^ I'm pretty sure at least 99% of the active members at BNB are females, if that helps any. I am currently 204902 years old, going on 204903. |

Well, I just wanted to make sure. XD. It kept reminding me of "Ren", which is a guy name, I think. Hahah, okay. I'll keep the gender thing in mind too. :D What a vast age you are, O Wise and Old One! :P Just kidding. S'cool. How was it 204,900 years ago? I mean, I bet it was pretty awesome, being in the Pleistocene era, right? Did you see any woolly mammoths? |

Hello Miss Ava and welcome to BNB! :3 The initial impression I got from reading your intro post was that you're an extremely intelligent person. I'm really in awe at your academic leanings! *-* Are you, by any chance, one of those prodigies I only see in commercials? xD; Because really, your subjects of interests, things you've read and all that, are really uncommon among thirteen-year-olds. It's great that you applied for Fuyuumi; we're really in need of canon characters here. I enjoyed reading your application by the way; it was really well-written and gave a good insight on Fuyuumi. :3 Good luck with the app and I hope I can roleplay with you soon~! |

@Penchan: Thank you, but I am merely a dilettante on all those subjects. Don't expect me to rival some philosophy professor on my learnings or anything. Though I wish I could meet a professor to argue with... I've never been in a commercial, nor on TV. I am only slightly photogenic. I would probably get very nervous, anyways, and I would think those kids have very hard lives and all, being in the spotlight all the time. Thanks for the compliments on the application. I am hoping to get accepted soon so I can RP with everyone here!

You're much too modest, Avarice. ((I'm having qualms about how to address you. xD; Avarice? Ava? Ava-san?)) You really must be one of the most intelligent people I've ever gotten to know. Like Penchan said, it's intimidating. xD;;; Oh! I find nihilism quite fascinating as well. Nietzsche is one of my favorite philosophers; we'll be reading some of his works in our history class soon. :3 Existentialism bothers me because I find it a little hard to understand what it really is. I'm not fond of abstract concepts. Care to enlighten me with your boundless knowledge? Perhaps I'll be able to understand it better. I'm not familiar with utilitarianism either. ^^; I attempt to stay as private as I can online, but... I guess I kinda fail in that regard on this forum. For some reason, I find this place safer than most websites. 8D As for my age, you'll probably be able to find it by browsing around the site a bit more. It's not hard to find. As for gender, you can assume that your assumptions are correct. La Corda isn't really a series that most guys would find interest in. xD |

You can call me whatever you'd like. I've actually been addressed as everything from "Miss" to "Ava", and I won't be offended if you shorten the entire thing (it's a bit of a... fingerful? to type). I'm not modest, just honest in self-appraisal. If I got a penny for how many intelligent kids I've seen with boundless hubris, I'd be rich. Or maybe at least buy a car... I haven't read a lot of Nietzche, or Kierkegaard... I'm reading some Bentham and basic overviews of philosophy. And also Mills' treatise on utilitarianism. I understand your need to stay private. I'm just Hah. I bet I know a few guys who might watch Corda. They'd die of the shojo-ness but it'd still be funny. XD. Okay... so. Philosophical rambling time! :D Feel free to refute any of my answers and stuff... but: Existentialism is basically 'existence over essence'. That's it in a nutshell. It states that our actions make us who we are, rather than society or some inner human nature. If all my actions are cruel then I am a cruel person, but ONLY because of my actions, not because all humans are innately cruel or because society made me cruel. My existence within existentialism is created by myself. It is mine and mine alone. Everything I do is based on my free will, which I do possess (existentialism rejects determinism) and therefore I must take responsibility for all my actions. Utilitarianism follows a similar bent, but is more of an ethics sort of thing. I follow act utilitarianism, which states that the perceived consequences of an action determine its moral worth. All actions must be for the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people in the world -- therefore things like slavery, rape, murder, etc., are automatically outlawed. An interesting conundrum on this is that if I were to save a dying man from drowning and later find out that he is Hitler, is it moral or immoral that I saved him? Of course, the perceived consequences show that it was moral. One man's death at the time of my perception would cause unhappiness, especially to me who had just let him die (if I had let him die). However, I only learnt afterwards that it was Hitler (who kills millions of people in the Holocaust). Therefore, sometimes utilitarianism is a tricky thing to use for an ethics issue. But, I like it. You can easily quantify the moral worth of an act by the perceived outcomes (it's an inexact science, though). Utilitarianism is obviously a consequentialist philosophy, so the ends justify the means if they do not cause harm. Lying is not outlawed entirely -- white lies that cause more good than evil are fine in my book. That makes me sound so immoral. XD. -shot- Of course, utilitarianism does not pass judgment on one person's character. Just because a good person with good intentions does something bad only means their actions are bad, not that the person themselves are bad. And yeah. I should stop now. Probably. |

I'll just call you "Ava," or "Ava-san," then. :3 Your explanations are well-phrased. I didn't think of existentialism in that way, based on what I learned of it in our English class. We talked about certain themes of existentialism including isolation, alienation, freedom, oppression, etc. because we read Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. I suppose the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy gives a pretty good overview of existentialism too. I'll have to remember to read it over sometime. :3 Utilitarianism sounds interesting too, but there's a slight issue I have with it. Who determines if the perceived outcomes are moral or not? Something that is moral to one individual may not be moral to another, since we all have different conceptions of morality. Along that same thought:
What is "happiness?" xD And who determines what is happy? These are difficult questions to answer, no? |

All right, Yian-san. Thanks. I read The Metamorphosis too, last year. D: I kept going "Kafka's on LSD... crazy guy..." but it was good. Interesting. A lot of existentialism deals with existing in an absurd world, and all. Stuff like that. Appeals to me and my cynicism. I need to read that overview too. I'm not very well-versed in it myself. Well, if you ask me what is 'happiness' and what is not, you kind of get into metaphysics, don't you? About reality, and all. If you start asking me about reality, I'll just take the solipsist route and say nothing exists and I made it all up. But, to me, happiness is endorphins in your brain. :D Well, let's assume there is a fixed definition of happiness. To judge whether something is moral or not, you go off of how much happiness is creates (if you're a utilitarian). This is only from a utilitarian stance, of course. Other ethical stances may see it differently, especially nonconsequentialists, which do not judge the morality of an act based on its consequences. |

Hi Ava! I happen to be in 8th grade too! 8D But it seems that I am older since my birthday already passed. And..you're taking English AND Arithmetic in high school?! *mouth drops in awe* You're impressive! I can only dream to be as good as you. Ahaha. I'm thinking of formally taking Japanese in high school too! 8D And the other things you're interested in...ahaha I never heard of it, so I apologize for that. >.< Well, again, welcome to BNB! I hope you get Shouko, so we can maybe roleplay together. XD |

Hello there, Ka-chan! It's all right that you welcomed me late. I You would be older, I skipped a grade so most people in eighth grade are older than me. Plus, I get license to be immature because of my youth! Hah....It's not really very impressive, honest. Just a math class and an English class. I'm sure you're very smart too. I would like to take Japanese, but I don't know if it's available. I passed some IQ test and therefore my future high school was going to see if a graduate student could teach me, but I don't know. They offer Mandarin though, at my school. Maybe I'll just learn Spanish! :D ¿Cómo está usted? (How are you [formal]?). XD. I can't wait to see if I get accepted... I want to roleplay too! :D For now, though, I shall loiter and, um, Yeah. |
