Who: Shiba Kousuke and Toyonaga Riju
What: An arranged meeting at Riju's place turns out more disastrous than expected.
Where: Riju's house
When: Early Saturday afternoon

===

Shiba walked down the street, wearing a long sleeved shirt and normal work jeans accompanied with sneakers. Hardly dressed for the occasion, but Riju was just a friend, anyhow. The handles on the bag containing the mochi that his grandparents had handed him as he left the house that morning suddenly seemed extremely heavy, as if he were carrying rocks instead. It was all Shiba's own fault for agreeing -- it was all on a whim anyway, he was half-asleep, Riju hadn't seemed very serious either. Or maybe he had. What if the whole thing had just been a dream (he was sleeping, after all)? And now he'd be showing up to Riju's house. uninvited and certainly very unwelcome. What kind of sick, twisted desire did he possess, to want to see Riju even in his sleep, so much that he actually made up the whole invitation-to-my-house-this-Saturday-to-play-my-GameStation thing? Mortified as these thoughts continued ramming their way into his mind, Shiba still continued walking, albeit gripping the handles even tighter with sweaty palms.

It was queer, how Shiba still managed to find the way back to Riju's house even after not visiting for ten years or so. He'd seen the changes the other houses had gone through since his leaving; there were buildings where there once weren't and gone where they once stood tall. Riju's house had also been repainted. Shiba nearly slapped himself for remembering as useless a detail as such.

There it was, right in front of him. Shiba checked his watch; ten minutes to one, the time they'd decided on (perhaps in real life, or perhaps in a dream). If this was a fluke he could always pretend he'd come to drop something off for his lovely grandparents. Inhaling deeply, he hit the doorbell with his forefinger and waited.

ding-dong

Riju jumped, interrupting his hundredth round of pacing around his living room. He took another glance down at his clothes (a long-sleeved red shirt and a pair of black shorts; it was getting warmer after all), smoothed out creases, patted down his hair and then bounced towards his front door with the most welcoming face he could muster. No doubt he was feeling very, very nervous, but he didn't want Shiba to feel uncomfortable around him. They had used to be best friends, after all -- Riju wondered if they could still hold the same atmosphere they had all those years ago.

Unlocking the door, he twisted the silver doorknob and stared out the frame. There, in all his hundred and eighty centimetres of glory, stood Shiba Kousuke, ex-best friend.

"H-Hi," gulped Riju, grinning the best he could.

"H-Hi,"

Riju looked nervous, to say the least. He looked just like he did when he was eight (though Shiba had to admit, much much taller now): the same matted pale brown hair much in need of combing, the same boyish style of dressing, and the same tense expression even though his grin could have rivaled that of a politician. Shiba's eyes narrowed as he looked his friend from up to down; Riju's shorts were slightly too short, which made him even more uneasy. They were friends, nothing more. Not even best friends anymore, just friends. No questioning that.

"Ojyamashimasu," Shiba nodded at Riju and walked in, slipping his shoes off at the small indent dividing the house and the entranceway.

"Ojyamashimasu,"

Riju gave him a sheepish, nervous laugh.

"You don't have to be so formal."

In the past, the boys could run into either house naked and no one would mind (though obviously, they never tried that). Now -- well, the shy Shiba he had used to know had changed and put up an impenetrable shield.

Which, Riju wanted to break.

Pulling on Shiba's arm in the same way he had used to lead the younger boy in the past, he practically dragged him up the stairs into his room.

"C'mon, I've got everything set up,"

Like his voice, his arms were trembling.

"You don't have to be so formal."

Riju laughed a tinkly laugh that was strangely reminiscient of a young girl, perhaps maybe a tad deeper. It made Shiba all the more unnerved (as usual, he displayed no distinguishable facial expression on his face). Before he could say anything, however, Riju placed a hand on his arm and half-led, half-dragged him up the familiar -- although much smaller, now that he compared the place to his earlier memories -- staircase leading to the landing on the second floor. The door to Riju's room was open a crack, and he was pulled through this, too.

"C'mon, I've got everything set up,"

Shiba aimed a nod at Riju, before sweeping his eyes over the room. Indeed, the place had appeared much larger when he was only a mere 130cm tall. A sleek black GameStation, much like the one he himself owned, lay next to a television.

"Let's start," he said, running a hand through his hair.

Within a few minutes, the two had started an increasingly heated game of Street Warrior -- Riju controlling a large, hulk-esque character while Shiba took charge of a slim Asian female. Riju always liked choosing the larger characters , though perhaps it was his slight insecurity about his small stature.

The crashing sound effects, exaggerated and much too loud to be caused by a few mere punches, echoed around the room.

Swiftly hitting buttons on his controller, Riju's character launched a martial arts move at Shiba's, only to have him (or in this case, her) counter it and bring him down.

The two letters 'K.O.' flashed across the screen. He couldn't help but laugh a bit.

"So you've still got it after all these years,"

"So you've still got it after all these years," Riju laughed, and upon hearing that Shiba managed a small smile. He wasn't that good -- just that when he didn't have work (which did not happen often; his boss was a slavedriver and he needed the extra cash anyway), there was nothing better to do than stay home and play video games. Homework could be shoved aside to make way for leisure, in Shiba's opinion, averting his thoughts from the two essays he had yet to finish.

"Not really."

His fingers were starting to get sore, but he continued staring fixedly at the screen. They started another round: this time Shiba decided to switch characters -- there was another he was fairly familiar with (aside from the skimpily-clad female that he usually picked), a princely figure wearing a suit that packed a strong roundhouse kick when executed correctly. He looked at Riju, wondering who he'd use.

Riju aimed a boyish grin at his (ex-)best friend -- this felt almost like ten years ago. The two of them would crowd around the SMES gaming console and start ramming the buttons in a friendly-turned-death match of Ultra Mario.

As Shiba switched his character, Riju wondered if he should do the same. Eventually he gave in, and, carefully considering each character's stats, he picked a rugged-looking teenage boy with ripped sleeves and a red headband -- the main character of Street Warrior. Never having used the character itself, Riju decided to try it out just this once.

He hit the start button, anticipating the bell that would sound to indicate the start of a match, eying Shiba nervously.

And there the bell went. The word "FIGHT" popped up, and quickly dissolved into thin air as Shiba hastily mashed the keys on his controller, neatly delivering an uppercut to Riju's character, sending the 3D figure into the brick wall of the randomly-generated background, which in this case was a shady-looking back alley. Deciding not to give Riju a chance to attack nor himself a chance to back away (although, now that he thought about it, it'd be much safer to stay closer to Riju's character; the headbanded teenager's ranged attack dealt a considerable amount of damage), he punched in another flurry of buttons, and gave Riju a sideways glance.

Button-mashing rapidly, Riju made his character dash left and right, steadily dodging the torrent of attacks that Shiba's character sent. A few here and there missed, but most of them hit his target, and Riju saw his character's life gauge slowly diminish. Sticking out of his tongue (a force of habit, this happened whenever he faced any kind of difficulty), he jabbed at the left shoulder button and coupled it with a jerk at the analog stick, sending a beam of three lightning arrows at the enemy, all of which, somehow missed.

"Crap..." he muttered, shooting Shiba a quick glance --

Their eyes met for a split second which lasted a lifetime.

Surprised, Riju dropped his controller and proceeded to topple a plastic cup which was lying somewhere near his feet, clumsy as always.

Shiba shot out a hand to grab the cup just before the liquid inside touched the floor and righted it. It gave him a reason to look away from Riju a while, at least -- he couldn't remember the last time he'd actually looked properly into his eyes.

Looking into his eyes? Shiba could have smacked himself, but kept his cool. Oh god, something was definitely off-kilter today. He hit 'Start' on his controller and paused the fight, turning to Riju.

"You okay?" he said, avoiding the other boy's gaze.

"You okay?"

Riju immediately blushed a shade of tomato, and desperately avoided eye-contact -- though he wouldn't have needed to, since Shiba was apparently doing the same.

His character stood on the screen, bobbing up and down in a fighting stance that seemed to scream "What the heck are you waitin' for, bub? GIVE ME A COMMAND!" Tugging lamely at the analog stick, Riju made him shoot a slow arrow of energy at Shiba's character.

Why had he reacted like this, anyway? Riju could still feel his heart thumping, faster and harder than usual. Not good.

He couldn't concentrate much on the game after that. He launched bad move after bad move, missing each and every time. And man, was he getting frustrated.

Right, Shiba said, stiffening himself and turning his body towards the screen of the tiny television. This is getting awkward... The air in the already-suffocating room seemed to be solidifying steadily; he resisted the urge to gasp for breath and picked up his controller. His fingers launched a quick roundhouse kick, which left Riju's character's Health Points low.

A frenzy of button-mashing later, Shiba had won two games out of, well, two.

Having died in the last round in a matter of seconds, Riju felt thoroughly embarrassed -- the red that flowed through him even reached the tips of his earlobes. He gulped, laughing nervously.

"Well. You won fair and square," he shrugged as nonchalantly as he could. "Like you used to." He added as an afterthought -- it slipped out, an attempt to lighten the viscous atmosphere.

Riju tapped on the glass on the nearby coffee table (which he had been leaning on), trying to ease the mood and at the same time appear carefree.

"Like you used to."

Memories of the past flowed through Shiba's mind like a train at rush hour, each individual carriage packed full with disgruntled anecdotes who just wanted to make their way home without a ribful of elbow. They got off in a spattering of stations -- there they were in elementary school, peeling potatoes during Home Economics; another one got off where they were seven and running the relay, passing the baton. Playing a long-outdated gaming console while sipping orange juice at Riju's place. And then his mother's untimely death.

The sadness for his mother had long since whittled away to nothing but a dull ache in his chest. Whereas the lack of his and Riju's boyish friendship that had lasted slightly more than a year: the hole it left had grown in comparison.

Love was an odd thing.

Shiba offered Riju a proper smile. "Like I used to," he repeated, picking up the controller again. "Another round?"
