Who? -- Katagiri Taro, Izumi Ran, and Takehara Suzume. What? -- Sequel to "An Offbeat Trio"; the three meet at Taro's house to work on their project for school. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - "Are you sure you don't want us to walk you home?" Suzume smiled and shook her head, waving off the two second-year boys, whom she knew to be called Tanaka and Kato. "No, no, it's all right. I have a project to work on today, but maybe some other time!" The two boys smiled, but Suzume could tell they were just a bit disappointed. Nevertheless, they didn't protest or insist, and for that, she was glad - she'd need all her patience and focus for what lay ahead. Instead, the two boys simply waved goodbye and passed the school gates, headed for home, she supposed, or wherever it was they went to hang out after school, while Suzume remained behind at the gates. She checked her mobile phone for the time, but found she was actually a bit early. She had been afraid she'd be late due to having some problems with her locker - it was temperamental sometimes and today, it had only been opened with the help of Tanaka and Kato, who were passing by at the time. Suzume let out a sigh of relief as she leaned back onto the gate post, hands in her coat pockets since the weather was still a little cool. She had considered changing into a spare set of clothes so she didn't have to wear her uniform to Katagiri's house, but with the time lost because of her locker, she decided not to and simply threw on the coat over top. Oh well. It wasn't as if Katagiri's house was a special place, anyway, though she hated being looked at for the Seiso uniform. "Seiso's music students this" and "Seiso's music students that" - honestly, how did anyone get any respect as a gen ed student? Though, of course, Seiso was considered a very good school, no matter which department you were in, but all the same... Then, suddenly, she looked up as she heard footsteps... |

Dawdling was one of Taro’s favourite activities and he loved to loiter around in the corridors to chat with different people after school. However, things were different on this day because Taro seemed to be in an unusual hurry. He packed his schoolbag before class was over, cruelly crumpling his notes in the process, and was the first one to flounce out of the room after the bell rang. “Taro-kun ~! I'm ready for our date!” "Eh...?" A brown-haired girl was blocking his way and her expectant smile made him suspicious. He was about to ask who she was and what she was talking about, when he suddenly remembered that it was the very same girl he had invited to the movie theatre a week ago. “Hello, uh…” he groped for the girl’s name, but his memory was like a sieve lately, “I’m really, really sorry but I have an important school project to work on which cannot be delayed…” The girl's smile faded; and Taro felt a cold shiver run down his spine. He hated to disappoint girls and normally would’ve neglected school work for dates, but in this case, his academics took priority over the girl. The reason for the sudden change of heart will be left to the reader’s imagination. "Look, uh," Taro bit on his lips and gently squeezed her hands as an attempt to limit the damage he had caused, ”I promise I’ll make up for it next week. So…don’t forget me, okay?” The disappointed girl finally managed an indulgent smile and squeezed his hand back. Convinced that the problem was settled, Taro said good-bye and hastily left the building through the grand entrance door. He did not directly walk to the meeting point, but made a little detour to the school garden where he secretly picked a few flowers, namely a dogtooth violet, a hardy Chinese orchid and a white haycinth. He hid them in his jacket pocket just to make sure that no one would discover the felony and hurried toward the arranged meeting point in front of the school gates. “Ran-chaaa----“ Taro coughed, his words got stuck in his throat the moment he realized that it was Suzume who was waiting there and not Ran-chan. “Oh. It’s you.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Dogtooth Violet: "First Love" Hardy Chinese Orchid: "I will not forget you" White haycinth: "I admire you" Taro does not know the meaning of the flowers, he just picked the ones which he thought were beautiful XD |

Suzume was genuinely hoping for Ran to arrive first. After all, the thought of spending even a few seconds alone with Katagiri was enough to make her want to gag. At least if Ran was around, their class president could act as a "buffer" between them, and it gave Suzume someone decent to talk to. But, if Katagiri was all she had to look at and talk to...well, he would be difficult to ignore. As she looked up, however, she saw the short black hair and the glint of sunlight on glasses, and a slight frown showed at the corners of her lips and on her brow. Just her luck. Katagiri was second to arrive, though he seemed rather enthusiastic about the meeting. His cry of "Ran-chaaan~" seemed to catch in his throat, however, as he coughed a bit, recovered, and said, in a much less enthusiastic tone, "Oh, it's you." Suzume raised an eyebrow and placed both hands on her hips, feet slightly apart, as she confronted him with a small smirk on her face. "Oh? And what do you mean by that, Taro-rin?" she asked. It was then that she noticed the flowers in his hand. This time, both her eyebrows shot up. "Ohoho, what are those, Taro-rin? For me? Aw, you shouldn't have!" she exclaimed in a falsely sweet voice. She bent down to get a closer look at them. A dogtooth violet. A hardy Chinese orchid. A white hyacinth. They were pretty and freshly picked, probably from the school gardens and not store bought. They still had bits of dirt and soil on them, and they weren't wrapped in fancy plastic or paper as flower shops so often did. Nevertheless, they were wisely chosen, though she suspected he was quite used to this sort of thing - flower-picking and all. Suzume dug through her bag and whipped out her little black book, flipping through the pages quickly before stopping at one. "Violets: they symbolize modesty, virtue, affection, watchfulness, faithfulness, and love. Orchids: love, beauty, refinement, many children, thoughtfulness and mature charm." Here, Suzume paused and chuckled, glancing up at Taro. "Mature?" but then continued on, "Hyacinth: games, sports, rashness, and playful joy." With that, Suzume flipped her little book closed with a snap and stored it in her bag again. Her little black book was quite useful - she didn't become an expert in love overnight! She had diligently made notes on just about anything related to love and relationships, from who was the best looking guy in Seiso to flower symbolism. "Really, Taro-rin...hyacinth? While your first two choices are admirable, I find your third choice in hyacinth questionable," Suzume said. "Girls don't like it when boys play around, you know! Girls take love seriously!" - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzume found her own interpretations

"Hey CP. Do you mind coming over here for a second?" "E-eh...?" Ran nervously asked as she spun around. One of her classmates, Yamazaki, had called her over just as she was about to step out of the classroom. She had a meeting with the two most popular and attractive persons in her class and was in a hurry. However, being the nice person she was, Ran stopped dead on her tracks and approached her fellow classmate. Yamazaki had a bright smile on his face as he gleamed at Ran who was shuddering. "Wh-what do you need, Y-Yamazaki-kun...?" Ran asked. He kept his bright smile as he stared at Ran, and it started to freak her out. His arms were behind his back. Is he holding something...? Ran thought. "So I heard you're meeting up with Katagiri and Takehara-chan today for that English project we have..." Yamazaki snickered. Oh. Ran finally understood why a person in her class would talk to her. It was something relating to Suzume, she knew it. There was no other reason why he would talk to her. Ran looked away and extended out her arms to her classmate. "I got it...," she said bluntly. Yamazaki smiled and began laughing. "I knew you'd get me, CP!" He revealed a present in his arms, all nicely wrapped and bowed. He placed it in Ran's hands, and said his thanks as he scurried out of the class. Ran sighed, and placed the present in her bag as she left the room. There were people like these lately. It was either a girl who didn't have to courage to speak up to Taro or a boy who wanted her to transfer a present to Suzume. She was just a delivery lady..and nothing more to the other student's eyes. Ran thought she deserved more than that, and usually would later give the present she recieved to the sender the next day. She'd say that she was unable to see either of them, or they wouldn't accept it. Ran didn't want to be toyed around like that, though it was hard for her to stand up to the others. This was the least she could do to sustain the little pride she had. Ran finally left the school building and scurried towards the gates to see both Taro and Suzume there. They seemed to be in another bicker, and Ran thought she should intervene before one would end up frustrated and angry with the other. "U-Um! I'm sorry that I-I'm late, everyone..I was kind of caught up with something..." Ran clutched her schoolbag, wondering if she should give Suzume her present this time. |

"Ohoho, what are those, Taro-rin? For me? Aw, you shouldn't have!" Taro gritted his teeth and tried to hide the flowers behind his bag before Suzume could comment on them; but the girl beat him to it and started examining the flowers with an irritatingly sweet voice. She conjured a small black book out of her bag, leafed through it and read out aloud her interpretations on flower symbolism. Taro knew that nothing good would come out of it and folded his arms. "Violets: they symbolize modesty, virtue, affection, watchfulness, faithfulness, and love. Orchids: love, beauty, refinement, many children, thoughtfulness and mature charm. Mature?” “Why, yes,” Taro answered with an affected smile, “I do think that Ran-chan is modest, lovely, mature and possesses all the traits you just looked up in your mysterious little book. Wait, did you write that book...? Wow...your life must be really empty if you’re writing books on flower symbolism, Suzu-chin ~” "Hyacinth: games, sports, rashness, and playful joy. Really, Taro-rin...hyacinth? While your first two choices are admirable, I find your third choice in hyacinth questionable. Girls don't like it when boys play around, you know! Girls take love seriously!" Although his facial expression remained bland and unimpressed, Taro was very startled by Suzume’s accusation. Frankly, he had not thought about the meaning of the flowers when he had picked the orchid, the hyacinth and the violet - the only criterion which he had paid attention to was whether they were beautiful or not. ‘Since when do flowers symbolize “games”?! I thought they could only mean stuff like love, peace and hope…?’ Taro’s suspicious glance wandered from the white hyacinth in his hand to the girl in front of him and back again. In spite of his distrust of Suzume, Taro deemed it best to get rid of the pretty, but meaningful, white hyacinth as soon as possible. Even if Ran-chan didn’t know what hyacinths meant, evil Suzume was surely going to put abominable ideas into her head and set her against Taro. On the other hand, he did not want his effort to be wasted and to drop the poor hyacinth in the best trash bin. After giving Suzume a swift, mischievous glance, he knew what to do with it. "U-Um! I'm sorry that I-I'm late, everyone..I was kind of caught up with something..." “Ah, Ran-chan, your timing is just perfect!” exclaimed Taro in his usual, melodramatic way and gave the orchid and the violet to the class president. “Please accept these feelings of mine ~” After that, he turned to Suzume, smiled at her in the most gentlemanly manner and gave her the white hyacinth, “And this is for you, Suzu-chin ~ a playful flower for a playful girl ~” |

"Wait, did you write that book...? Wow...your life must be really empty if you’re writing books on flower symbolism, Suzu-chin ~” Suzume smirked and said, in a very matter-of-fact tone of voice, "It's best to be prepared for such things, especially when it comes to love and relationships. I mean, you have to put your best foot forward! Who wants to mess that up and trip over themselves simply because they weren't prepared?" Oh, yes, Katagiri was getting more and more irritating by the minute. It took all her willpower to bite back a more scathing response, but she knew he was looking for that kind of show. Would she give in to what he wanted? Of course not! Never in a million years! But her limits were really tested when Ran-chan arrived, as cheerily yet timid as ever, clutching her bag in front of her closely, as if she were guarding herself from something. Suzume briefly wondered why...until a familiar white hyacinth entered her field of vision. “And this is for you, Suzu-chin ~ a playful flower for a playful girl ~” 'Don'tgivein! Don'tgivein! Don'tgivein!' Suzume silently repeated to herself, the words running through her head so quickly that they seemed to fuse into one long, unstoppable word. It was what he wanted, and she'd only make herself appear rude and insensitive if she said what she wanted oh-so-dearly to say. The problem was getting out of this situation in the most favourable way possible for her. "Ah, how pretty a flower, Katagiri! You really, really shouldn't have," she exclaimed in mock surprise. "Unfortunately, my uncle is rather allergic to these flowers so I can't bring it with me. It's terrible situation, isn't it? I'm sure you'll be able to find another girl to give it to who is much more worthy of it than I and can bring it home with her and put it in a nice vase." At this, she forced a polite smile onto her face, delicately pushing the white hyacinth away as she turned to greet Ran. "Oh, and don't worry, Ran-chan! We had only just arrived ourselves," Suzume said cheerily, continuing her even tone of voice as best as possible. "Now! How about we head over to Katagiri-kun's house, ne? We should put those pretty flowers of yours in water right away, otherwise they'll wilt. Flowers are so delicate, after all. They don't last very long." |

Ran's faced poofed beet red when Taro handed her an orchid and a violet. Ran herself understood a little bit of flower symbolism, due to the fact that one of her manga's storyline revolved all around flowers. An orchid meant...love, beauty, refinement, many children, thoughtfulness and mature charm. The violet meant modesty, virtue, affection, watchfulness, faithfulness, love and "let's take a chance on happiness." At these meanings, she blushed once again, and took the flower out of Taro's grasp. "U-uh..thank you, Katagiri-kun...," she whispered. "Now! How about we head over to Katagiri-kun's house, ne? We should put those pretty flowers of yours in water right away, otherwise they'll wilt. Flowers are so delicate, after all. They don't last very long." Ran nodded, glad that the conversation about flowers is now on a standstill. "Y-yes..I-I don't want these flowers to d-die..." she mumbled quietly to herself. Ran was about top place the flowers carefully inside her schoolbag, but paused when she remembered about the person she was supposed to deliver. J-Just this once... she thought. Ran opened her schoolbag, took out the present, and gently placed the flowers on the edge. "Uh..h-here, Takehara-san...this is f-from Yamazaki-kun from our class...," Ran extended her arm to the recipent with eeys that practically said "please take it. I don't want this responsibility anymore." |

Taro, who thought that Suzume was close to her breaking point, was disappointed to see that she was still as cheerful as ever. His original plan was to provoke Suzume and to make her say something rude, so that he could report it to Ran-chan and gain the shy class president’s sympathy. But no such luck, Suzume unfortunately kept her cool and continued to exchange “pleasantries” with him. Apparently she was not planning to give in. Perhaps he should call it a draw for the time being…? “Awww that’s a pity, Suzu-chin!” Taro nodded understandingly and put the unloved hyacinth back into his pocket with a shrug. “Believe me, Suzu-chin, there’s no girl in the world who is worthier of the hyacinth than you.” Although he had a look of regret on his face, the tone in which he spoke was dry and duplicitous. “I’m sorry that your uncle is rather allergic to these flowers – but don’t be sad, next time I will make sure to give you a white hyacinth made of plastic ~ ♥” "U-uh..thank you, Katagiri-kun..." Taro was completely ravished by the shy girl’s stuttering and couldn’t help but to beam at Ran-chan. His plan to provoke Suzume might have failed, but at least he had succeeded in making Ran blush. He chuckled leeringly and almost squished the hyacinth in his pocket. His elated mood lasted for the next ten minutes and even Suzume’s present couldn’t dampen it. He just watched Ran-chan handing over the present and cheerfully said, "Oho, a present from Yamazaki-kun? Not bad, Suzu-chin, congratulations!" |

Suzume's brow twitched when Katagiri implied - or rather, blatantly stated - that she was the best suited to a flower like the white hyacinth, but she decided to ignore it for the time being. Love was serious business, and she always treated it like it was, unlike Katagiri, who flirted with every pretty girl he saw and probably had had more dates than she could count! “I’m sorry that your uncle is rather allergic to these flowers – but don’t be sad, next time I will make sure to give you a white hyacinth made of plastic ~ ♥” "I'll be sure to look forward to it, Taro-rin. That way, it won't need any light or water and it won't bother my uncle at all," she said in a light tone of voice, though her words implied that such a plastic flower would be tossed somewhere and never looked at again, never to see the sunlight - out of view, out of mind. Besides, Suzume wasn't really a big fan of plastic flowers. If her Aunt Chiyoko wanted to spruce up a table or window sill with flowers, she opted for the cheap and ugly (in Suzume's opinion) plastic flowers at the closest 100 yen shop. Suzume had spent many hours thinking of ways to get rid of said plastic flowers without initiating a lecture from her aunt, but no luck, so far. Then, to her surprise, Ran-chan thrust a little package towards her, from Yamazaki-kun, apparently. She noted the pleading look in the class president's eyes - they looked rather hurt - and she frowned, removing the package from Ran-chan's hands, testing its weight in her arms. After just a moment of thought, Suzume turned around and tossed the package into the nearest garbage, dusting her hands off with satisfaction as she returned to Katagiri and Ran-chan. "If Yamazaki-kun wishes to give me a gift, then the least he can do is give it to me himself instead of getting someone else to do his dirty work," Suzume said with genuine impatience. While Suzume disliked flirtatious men like Katagiri, she also disliked men who didn't have a strong enough backbone to do the things they needed to do. It reminded her too much of her own father, who she loved a lot but felt he was too unreliable. She had little patience for such people. "Even Katagiri knows better. Now...are we heading out or are we going to stand around?" |

Though she'd hate to admit it, Ran felt a big sigh of relief escaping her lips when Suzume dumped that present into the trash. It might've seemed harsh, but Ran agreed to her friend's philosophy as well. Yet she will never have the courage herself to give Taro any of her presents. Now all Ran had to do was make up an excuse as to why the present wasn't transferred properly. My dog ate it. There was a big gust of wind and the present flew away. My brother thought it was for him and took it. Why she suddenly had a plethora of excuses, she would never find out. "Even Katagiri knows better. Now...are we heading out or are we going to stand around?" Ran nodded her head, signaling it was time for their take-off. The day wasn't waiting for them. "L-Let's go...," Ran peeped out, shuddering at the sudden leadership. Afterwards, she snuck behind Suzume's back and pushed her forward so she was the one leading the group. |

Women were cruel human beings. To Taro, the present which was now living a pitiful existence in the wastebin was the perfect example of a girl's cold-heartedness. ' This is what you get when you seriously fall in love: As soon as you show your feelings, you're literally dumped and left with a broken heart! ' Never before had Taro sympathised so much with a fellow classmate and he impulsively decided to be particularly nice to Yamazaki-kun for the next few days. Taro admitted that using Ran-chan as a delivery girl was a bad way to approach Suzume but he thought that even a coward like Yamazaki didn't deserve such a respectless treatment. He did not know Yamazaki-kun very well and thus couldn't assess his personality, but his experience told him that perhaps the latter was just too shy and afraid of being rejected by the one he liked. In fact, Yamazaki-kun's situation reminded him a bit of his time during middle school, which made Suzume's action appear a hundred times ruder than it already was. It might be easy for Suzume, a girl who obviously enjoyed flirting with the opposite gender, to show her feelings openly, but she had no right to expect that everyone else was able to do such things. too. "Wow - amazing, Suzu-chin. You just threw a poor guy's money, efforts, thoughts and feelings into the trash as if they were a moldy sandwich." He nodded appreciatively at Suzume, but his words actually sounded more embittered than reverential, "Yamazaki might be a coward, but you know, cowards, or shy people in general, often tend to be the most sensitive ones." Visibly annoyed by the incident, Taro strode off and mumbled, "Let's go." |

Suzume frowned. Was Katagiri offended? Maybe it was a guy thing - like, one guy sticking up for another...or something of that sort. In any case, she couldn't see why he was so affected by her one action. While it was rude to simply throw away Yamazaki-kun's gift, wasn't it also rude to expect someone else - especially another girl who wasn't even a close friend - to give a gift to the one you liked? If she had been asked by an acquaintance to give a gift to someone they liked, she would have have felt rather offended and also a little sad for the recipient of the gift - that their admirer was too afraid to approach them. If Yamazaki-kun had approached her himself, she would have gladly accepted the gift. She knew he wasn't a bad guy, from what she knew of him, but a man who could not go forward and work towards his goals was an unreliable person, and an unreliable person would be like her father - never holding down one job, never meeting deadlines, always forgetting appointments, and ultimately, never living a stable life. And Suzume could not accept that kind of person. "Yamazaki might be a coward, but you know, cowards, or shy people in general, often tend to be the most sensitive ones." Suzume paused and froze in her place just as she stepped beyond the school gates. "Yes, but what will you ever achieve in life if you can't even do something as simple as give a gift with your own two hands?" she asked, her voice lowering to a serious - rather than teasing - tone. "Life is full of obstacles. If you expect others to overcome them for you, then you haven't achieved or learned anything at all, have you?" With that said, Suzume continued onwards. Unexpectedly, however, she felt a push from behind. Caught by surprise, Suzume lost her balance, pitched forward, and fell flat on her face. "Ungh...You did not see that happen..." she murmured, slowly getting to her feet and inspecting her limbs and hands for any damage. A few scrapes, but nothing serious or particularly painful. Still, she'd need to get them washed and perhaps get a small bandage for them. "Katagiri, you have a first aid kit at your place, right? Let's hurry so I can take care of this. Now, which we do we go? Weren't you supposed to be the one giving us directions, Oh Fearless Leader?" Edited by Kotoko, May 10 2009, 04:19 AM.

Ran screamed in terror when Suzume fell face-front from her push. She had no intentions of doing that, but that's how it happened. Luckily, Suzume was like steel and just toughened it out. Ran ran to the fallen warrior and began to stutter. "T-Takehara-san!!! A-Are you all right? I-I'm sorry..." Her eyes were full of worry as she stared at the scrapes and bruises Suzume has earned. Trembling, Ran slowly got up and waved her hand, signaling for the others to follow. "W-we have to sanitize Takehara-san's scratches...K-Katagiri-kun...May you please show the way....?" Ran was completely struck by the fact that she had injured a very important friend. Even though Suzume said it was all right and there were no major bruises, Ran still felt guity. This sort of reminded her of a few days back when she fell off the chair and whacked Taro chin up. Strange how she always ended up physically hurting the people most dear to her. Ran shook her head and tried to let go of those thoughts. They're overall all right..that's all that matters... |

If Yamazaki-kun wished to take vengeance for the ignominious treatment his present had received, then he would be pleased to find out that it had already been carried out by someone else. While a part of Taro sympathised with Suzume - scraping your hands and knees was surely not funny - the other part thought that it only the natural consequence of her cold-heartedness. He wasn't sure how to react to Suzume's "blunder"; thus he dedicated his attention to Ran-chan instead. The class-president seemed to be in a state of shock after she had unintentionally pushed down Suzume and for some unknown reason, Taro found her guilt-ridden face beyond cute. 'Aww...she must be really worried~' Sighing, Taro joined the two girls and inquired politely, "Are you alright, Suzu-chin? Does it hurt very badly? Try to bear it a little longer, my house isn't far away from here." For once, he felt like being nice to his arch rival, but unfortunately, her next comment made it hard for him to hold on to this feeling. "...Weren't you supposed to be the one giving us directions, Oh Fearless Leader?" Taro's eyebrows twitched and a sarcastic smirk flashed across his face the moment he heard Suzume addressing him as their 'Fearless Leader'. "Sure, just follow your Fearless Leader! Do you want me to take your hand and walk extra slowly in case you lose your balance again?" he asked in a pseudo-concerned manner, whereat he grabbed Suzume's left hand and asked Ran-chan to hold the other one as "Suzu-chin seemed to be rather wobbly on her feet today". |

"T-Takehara-san!!! A-Are you all right? I-I'm sorry..." Suzume brushed off her clothes, ridding them of the loose dirt that they had picked up during the fall. Her hands stung just a little as she did so from when she had thrown them out to break her fall and, sure enough, there were scrapes on her palms and on her bare knees. She smiled reassuringly at Ran-chan before patting her on the shoulder. "No worries, Ran-chan~! I'm not going to succumb to little scratches like these. I just need to get these washed up, slap on a couple of Band-aids, and I'll be good as new!" For the moment, she was also surprised at Katagiri, who appeared to be quite concerned. At that point, Suzume almost felt bad for all the bickering and teasing earlier, but his concern for her seemed to vanish just as quickly as it had come. "Sure, just follow your Fearless Leader! Do you want me to take your hand and walk extra slowly in case you lose your balance again?" Although he probably acted the part of the Chivalrous Knight, Katagiri took hold of her left hand, though not very gently, as he instructed Ran-chan to take hold of her right.
