To the whole wide world, the name Yunoki Azuma is an equivalent term for “perfection”. Having a totally effeminate appearance and long purplish hair that falls to his waist, Yunoki is no doubt pretty. Being the third son of a well-known family, he often travels to and from school in his own private car. Although Yunoki never ever boasts about his wonderful parentage, he naturally has a respectful and elegant manner that clearly shows his refined upbringing. When it comes to his private life, Yunoki lives very rhythmically and will not break his habits even during holidays. Not only is Yunoki always gentle and caring to everyone, his academic results are always amongst the top. He is someone you can count on as your helpful senpai and/or your ideal student. His perfect existence is so influential and popular in school that a Shineitai (bodyguards) consisting of his fangirls has been created. Such a perfect Yunoki, however, is only an image he consciously created to face the outside world. (The only drawback about Yunoki, if there’s any, is probably his poor health. He doesn’t eat much during meals and he is not the type to snack between meals either, only drinks tea from time to time. That is probably why he has such a frail body and that he used to be sick in bed so often during childhood? Though for some reason, this aspect of him is also seen as a merit by his loyal fangirls…) Considering the family environment that Yunoki grew up in, it is not difficult to understand why there is such a need for him to create a perfect mask to hide his real self from everyone else. Born in an exceptional rich and influential family, Yunoki Azuma is the third son with two older brothers, one older sister above him and a younger sister below him. The Yunoki family is famous in the Business world for Kadou (華道, some sort of traditional Japanese flower arrangement), and the immeasurable wealth of the family could be easily seen just from Yunoki’s possessions. For example, he alone owns a personal chauffeur (meaning that the Yunoki family is probably already hiring eight persons just for chauffeurs lol, one for each of the family member… and don’t forget about the cars themselves!), and his flute is made of pure gold. Yunoki also has two continuous rooms just for his private use (ie. his bedroom is actually two rooms linked together), with an extra 10-mat room (ie. the room can fit in 10 tatamis, which is very big) equipped with a grand piano for musical purposes….! For such a rich and influential family, it’s not surprising that “not bringing shame to the family” – a traditional belief in the Japanese culture – is stressed so much more than in normal families in their child-rearing methods (Yunoki was cautious about this even when he was showing his real self to Hino, as he replied “do you think I’ll make such a careless mistake?” to Hino’s question when she asked what if others accidentally discovered him being evil to her on the rooftop). Thus carrying the infamous Yunoki family name, Yunoki Azuma has to fulfill expectations of his family – getting first in class, excelling in the arts, being nice to everyone, etc… basically everything you can think of. However, how can a mere human being be so very perfect in all aspects? Being born as a third son of a prestigious family, Yunoki has to take care not to surpass his two brothers in any possible way as well. It has become an unspoken rule within the family (for the younger ones not to surpass the older ones) because otherwise he’d be putting his two brothers and the whole Yunoki family in an embarrassing situation. As the third son, whatever he achieves has already been achieved by his brothers, meaning that others will naturally take them for granted as his responsibility (hence little or next to no chance for Yunoki to get family praise and recognition). To make things even worse, he has a very harsh and traditional grandmother as one of his main caregivers. His grandmother is the Law; literally everything is under her control. Strict obedience without questioning is required at all times, even during times when she isn’t necessarily correct… or rather, when she shouldn’t even be interfering. He is always under his two brothers, destined to be their supporter in the family business in the future. At the moment where he was born to the Yunoki family, his future was all decided…. there’s simply no escape. Expected to be perfect without bringing shame to the family, expected not to surpass his brothers, expected to help out in the family business and expected to follow his grandmother’s orders without questions, the way Yunoki used to deal with all of these expectations was to create a Perfect image in front of others, even if that perfection is only a fake and superficial mask. With the perfection mask on, he would not embarrass the family. He’d also be highly evaluated and he could even busy himself with the tasks of perfecting himself in so many ways (in his flute, academic results, calligraphy, etc) that he probably could forget the pain of not having any freedom to chase after his own wishes. Bearing such a heavy family burden upon his shoulders, having to chronically hide his heart… no matter how much one is used to it, it still must have been lonely and tedious. This should also be true for Yunoki. The positive responses he gets by displaying the “Perfect Yunoki” mask further reinforces him to continue to hide himself as it provides him with all the attention/affection/recognition he otherwise wouldn’t be able to obtain in the beginning. Yet, because the image he displayed to gain them isn’t his real self, such attention/affection/recognition only gives Yunoki minimal comfort (if any) as time goes on, eventually even hurting him to a degree (but he couldn’t stop putting on the mask either because of his family). Although his rational mind knows a bit too clearly what he has to do or what future awaits him, although he has learnt to be apathetic and not to hope for anything… I think that unconsciously, Yunoki might even be hoping for someone to look through his perfect mask – someone who can see him for who he really is, only to be repeatedly disappointed. That’s probably why Yunoki blamed the ones who are deceived instead of thinking himself as the one at fault, for his tone is of disappointment rather than of firm accusation…. Putting up a fake perfect mask is also a nice way to hide his own self, since Yunoki realized that he just could not show his own wishes and emotions. He was not only expected to be perfect, he has also learnt from early on during his childhood that showing his wishes and emotions was not something to be permitted. One example is him being forced to stop learning piano because he was about to surpass his brother, although he clearly enjoys playing piano. He wanted to talk back when his grandmother asked him to stop playing piano, only ended up to be scolded. If he hadn’t stopped learning, who knows how far Yunoki would get on with his pianist skills? This means that Yunoki could never act out according to his true wish, which can be really frustrating (he admitted that the things he could control were only minor ones like trying his very best in the concours). Because Yunoki knew that showing his real emotions/wishes/etc would only bring about negative consequences (or at least they would simply be disregarded), he has given up on hopes and has started to hide them all in a desperate attempt to protect himself. Even if he couldn't realize his dreams/wishes, there would be much less of a chance for him to get hurt afterwards (as realized by Hino in the recent manga, “this person (Yunoki) has given up in the very beginning”). Giving up and hiding his own self has already became an integral part of him, almost like a self defense mechanism. One of such resulting outcomes is that he gradually grew up to be apathetic to things around him in order not to be disappointed. For example, he didn’t really care about flute at the beginning, he learnt it only under his grandfather’s suggestion (only grew to truly love the flute later on… though this fact remains unnoticed until a much later point for him). Anyway, in order to develop the much needed artistic sense in him for the family’s sake, Yunoki has to learn all sorts of art at a very young age like Calligraphy and Tea Ceremony (he is very good at both) etc – and music was one of them. Before he entered high school/Seisou Gakuen, however, it was already decided that Yunoki was to major in music only up till his graduation; he would then need to major in Business in University so that he could pick up and help out the family business afterwards. Deciding what to major in university has become an important and repeating theme for Yunoki later on in the series, as it represents Yunoki’s dilemma between defying the family orders to go after his own wishes and obeying the family orders at the expense of giving up his wishes. Yunoki has grown up a lot during the period when he decided to choose Business out of his own wish, instead of having it forced onto him reluctantly. Now that we know the White Yunoki is only a fake mask he puts on, what is his real self then? He is known to show a darker side in front of Hino Kahoko, the heroine of this series, but that is not his real self either. For me, his dark side is only a way he used to attract Hino’s attention, since he must be very attracted to Hino whether he admits it or not. A reason why Yunoki only opens up to Hino is that she has got what he has been wishing all his life – freedom to chase after one’s dreams. To Yunoki, his family is an inescapable fate: no matter how hard he tries, he will never have freedom, let alone the ability to go after his dreams (if he has any left uncrushed). Yet Hino, a girl with an ordinary family upbringing, is free to pursue any dream of hers as she wishes. On top of that, she puts a lot of effort into everything without giving up. It must have pained Yunoki to see such an honest and resilient Hino – he might even be unconsciously annoyed and jealous. This is when his real darker side kicks in, in which such actions should offer him some sort of comfort in a way. Unconsciously, because he is attracted to this girl, he may want her to realize his true self. This could be achieved by putting up a bad side (which isn’t necessarily fake, since he should be pretty annoyed anyway) in front of her, by which he is basically telling Hino that “the White Yunoki everyone sees is actually not my real self”. On the other hand, by intimidating Hino, he could once again settle in peace by telling himself that things that are impossible are really impossible afterall… if Hino really gave up music because of his harsh words. But she never did… so he ended up only getting more attracted to the red-haired violinist to the point that he is willing to give up Music, because he believes that he can now place his hopes through her. Originally, Yunoki has no intention to fall in love, and he has no hopes for love either, but what he felt towards Hino is probably the seed of love. Relationships Hihara Kazuki Hihara is Yunoki’s apparent best friend. They met each other during the very first day of their first year in Seisou, when Hihara mistook Yunoki as an upperclassman, and they have been friends ever since. However, Yunoki never really thought of Hihara as a friend at first – he merely thought that it’d be convenient to keep Hihara at his side because he has a lot of friends (and that could be useful). As time passed though, Yunoki grew to acknowledge Hihara as his precious (and probably his only) friend, probably under the influence of Hihara’s bright and carefree personality as he admitted that it was really natural for him to “become a nice person” whenever he is together with Hihara. Although it’s only from Hino’s point of view (but then again, Hino is the protagonist of this series anyway), it was mentioned that Yunoki’s smile was genuine whenever he was in front of Hihara, as opposed to his usual fake smile in front of others. Kaji Aoi His relationship with Kaji Aoi, the new transfer student, is worth mentioning on its own because the two of them are so different from each other although they actually share a similar family background. Kaji’s family is also rich and influential in a different area. His father is a famous politician, and his grandfather owns a hospital which is ready to be passed onto Kaji in the future. Anyway, the point is that despite the similarities in their family background, Kaji is so free to do whatever he feels like doing while Yunoki has been chained up by his family long ago and could only subconsciously wish for freedom. Therefore, the two of them really don’t get along well. Kaji is not fond of Yunoki either – he can even vaguely feel Yunoki’s dark side, although he can’t really pinpoint it clearly. Yunoki too, openly admits (in front of Hino) that he dislikes Kaji. They nearly started a fight in the library too! I mean, imagine that – Kaji actually annoys Yunoki so much to the point that he can no longer maintain the Perfect Student mask and is willing to risk shattering his image by quarrelling publicly with him! Kaji must be special to Yunoki in another sense… XD Family Yunoki Shizuma is Yunoki's oldest brother (8 years older than him). He is a lawyer and is helping out the family in all matters relating to law. Even up till now, he is still feeling guilty about the fact that Yunoki had to give up piano because of him. He knew it wasn't his fault, but he just couldn't help feeling that way... Yunoki Suzuma is Yunoki's second older brother (5 years older than him). He is the head of the Yunoki family, although the one who is actually in power is still their grandmother. He is interested in cars and has collected a few sports car for his own private use, in addition to the usual one for business/normal uses (ie. the one with his personal chauffeur). Like their father, the two brothers of Yunoki are not that talkative. However, both of them really care about Yunoki, and are willing to support him no matter what kind of choices he is going to decide for university/his future. It's funny though how they both have this tendency to ask Yunoki whether he's alright (after working for a while) and asking him to rest etc. They can't help worrying about Yunoki's health because the image of little Yunoki being sick in bed is so vivid in their minds lol. Yunoki Miyabi is Yunoki's little sister (is she 2 years younger? Can't remember exactly ^^;;) and is still a middle-schooler. Probably because she is the one closest to Yunoki in terms of age, Yunoki is also closest to her inter-personally. She also worries about him like how Yunoki's two brothers do, just in a different sense. Miyabi is quite observant - at least when it comes to things about Yunoki Azuma. It appears that she knows Yunoki better than the other family members, and is probably the only one who realizes the possibility that Yunoki has just been pushing himself unreasonably hard to meet their grandmother's demands (that what he's doing is not something he really wishes to do). (Not gonna cover his parents, grandparents and older sister individually because they're either mentioned above, or that there's only minimal info available on them. I suspect though, that Yunoki's older sister might be married already... otherwise it's kinda impossible for me not to come across her yet - be it in games, mangas or even novels! XD ) It is also important to note that although the family is being very harsh on Yunoki, Yunoki has never hated or blamed his family. Rather, he likes his family and is very protective of it (he is genuinely worried when his family was about to be taken over, and really relieved when the problem has been solved). The Yunoki family also has a habit/ritual of having meals together with everyone, probably a symbol of unity of the family...? Others Apart from the three characters mentioned above, Yunoki only shows his public white side to everyone else, and he also distances himself equally from them. To students (including the other concours participants), he is the perfect senpai and to teachers, he is the perfect student – nothing more, but nothing less either. For example whenever someone asks him a favour, he will help out gladly(?). However, it is important to note that Fuuyumi and Amou can somewhat sense Yunoki’s darker side… or at least, they aren’t completely fooled by White Yunoki, as everyone else is. Misc One interesting fact I’ve observed from the games is that: Yunoki actually likes marshmallows. Yes, seriously. XD If you’re going for his routes, sometimes he will give you marshmallows to cheer you up when you’re feeling a bit down… and he’ll be glad if you give him marshmallows too. Hmm. Another point is that Yunoki actually likes crowded places, but hates to take railways lol. Your goals? (what do you plan with your character?) When I applied for Yunoki a year ago, I used to want to eventually free him from the dark cage named “family” even just for the tiniest bit, and to find him a lover (whoever that person is)… but not anymore. It’s not like I don’t want him to have freedom and a lover anymore though. It’s just that right now, I want to show his unknown real side to everyone, because I think he is greatly mistaken by the English-speaking fans. Lots of people (no offence) looked at Yunoki’s black side and thought he’s scary, but the real him is actually very gentle and caring and nothing scary. Seriously! We all know that he has a superficial white side and a secret black side, but his real self is actually hidden further behind his dark self. Once he is in love, he will show his real gentleness (that is different from his usual polite manners) to his lover. It’d be nice if I manage to just change a single person’s viewpoint of Yunoki, if not more. Of course, I still hope Yunoki will be able to find himself a lover so that even for someone like himself would be able to find true happiness… Short sample RP (~10 lines): It was getting really late into the Sunday night. The massive Yunoki residence stood there, wrapped up in tranquility. Shining out of a corner of the clouds, the moonlight gently reached the residence and the huge garden that was spreading in the center. In a corner of that garden. In front of his own writing desk, Yunoki Azuma let out a faint sigh. The paper near his hands was the university choices form* that was given out last week. The form, however, was still blank. Putting his silver fountain pen aside, Yunoki reached out his slender and white fingers and opened the Shoji**. So… what should I do? With doubts written all over his face, he gazed over at the moonlit garden: a beautifully pruned Pine and next to it, an ancient warehouse. It was a pretty garden that was especially designed so that the flowers of every season could be viewed and appreciated from any room and direction. Majoring in Economics or Business… should be a proper choice… The head of the Yunoki family was succeeded by his second eldest brother, so Yunoki did not have any pressures of family succession. Yet, he was expected to someday take up part of the family business and Yunoki was planning to fulfill that expectation. It’s also possible to go for Law… Remembering his eldest brother, who became a lawyer and helped out the family business that way, Yunoki pondered upon that possibility. But I don’t really like to go for the same routes as my brothers. Just look at that piano incident… Although Yunoki was currently participating in the school concours as a flautist, he used to learn piano in the past. Having talents that way surpassed his two brothers, who started taking lessons at the same time as he did, his grandmother forced him to give up piano because Yunoki as the third son should not outshine his brothers. Anyway whatever I choose, it must be beneficial to the family business. That’s the one absolute condition I must follow… As if he was trying to talk to himself, he kept murmuring inside his heart. It wasn’t like as if Yunoki was being troubled by it though – it was just that for whatever reasons, he was reluctant to write on that university choices form. Isn’t it just about writing down your desired university course? Taking over the family business, getting married with an arranged partner, etc… Yunoki knew he’d need to go for a pre-decided life, and he had the confidence to be able to do that flawlessly. I know what position I’m in… However, he started to vaguely realize... that part of him was already fed up with that kind of life… and such thoughts were becoming increasingly stronger ever since the concours had started. Looking down once again, Yunoki fixed his eyes on the form… and imagined himself writing down “Music department” in the space provided. Though, he’d never actually do such a thing. I must give up music sooner or later… I’ve already decided to say goodbye to music once the concours has come to an end, haven’t I? Questioning himself in his heart, Yunoki shook his head lightly, as to push away all disturbing thoughts that were starting to form inside it. His lengthy black hair swayed slightly in an attractive manner. Well, it’s alright. At least during this concours period, I’m not bored. A smile came up on his lips when Yunoki remembered Hino Kahoko, a second year in the general ed. Department. I’ve got a cute toy anyway – She was the only person in the whole world to whom he did not need to fake false pretence. No matter how mean and evil he got, somehow the girl never stopped coming next to him… Closing the Shoji softly, Yunoki took the flute and walked towards his own practice room. It was a room spreading over two normal rooms, equipped with a grand piano. Although it did not have any special sound-proof equipment, the walls were thick enough to allow night practices without disturbing anyone near. Putting his lips lightly on the flute made of pure gold, he played the song which he had ensembled with Hino earlier during the day. Univerity choices. His future. The necessity to give up music someday… In order to chase all of those thoughts out of his head, Yunoki started to play the flute, thinking only about Hino. He had already finished practicing the amounts necessary for today, but Yunoki still wanted to play the flute once more nonetheless. I’d fill in the university choices form once I finished playing this song, but for now… * It’s common in Japan to give out such forms to students so that teachers will know which universities and courses the students are aiming at, meaning they can give out proper advices and/or practices to them etc in order to fulfill those aims ^^;; ** Shoji is the name for those Japanese-style paper sliding doors. |
