"Fate seems to have a penchant for making Manami and Hiroyuki meet in unlikely places. Like in this one Saturday evening, in the grand ballroom of a five-star hotel where a formal party is taking place." * * * * * Mori Manami heaved a sigh as she leaned against the cushioned backseat of the car and diverted her gaze to the view outside. Amidst the fleeting buildings, houses and people on the sidewalks, she could see a faint reflection of herself on the tinted window. But the image wasn't of her usual simple and carefree self. She looked far more mature and sophisticated tonight than she really was. Perhaps it was because of the change of clothes and a bit of dolling-up. The usual get-up of comfortable blouse or shirt and jeans were now replaced by a tube-cut cocktail dress that hugged her figure snugly. Her brown hair, which she often wore half-ponytailed with a ribbon to school, was now pinned on both sides with jeweled clips and it cascaded down her shoulders in big loose curls. It was hardly noticeable in the reflection, but she had a small dab of makeup on her eyelids, cheeks and lips too, which, according to her mother, was necessary to give her face a fair, robust glow. Why do I have to go the party anyway? she thought rather dejectedly as she rested her forehead against the window. She had been intending to spend this fine Saturday evening practicing a piece for the upcoming school festival performance. But she wasn't able to follow through with that plan for her parents found it convenient to drag her along to a party. It wasn't that Manami completely detested social gatherings; she just wasn't so keen on attending the more 'formal ones' because she found them too stiff and constraining. Unfortunately for her, tonight's party fell in that category. "We're here," her father called out as the car pulled to a stop. As Manami peered at the window, the image of a towering hotel came into view. Pan-Pacific Yokohama, one of the most expensive luxury hotels in the city, stood before her in all its five-star grandeur. No wonder her parents insisted that she wore her best clothes tonight. * * * * * "Mori-san! I am so glad you could make it!" A pleased chuckle. A pat on the shoulder and a tight grip of the hand. "Forgive our late arrival, Kobayashi-san." A polite bow. "I'm very honored that you invited us here." Manami watched quietly as her parents exchanged pleasantries with a middle-aged man with graying hair, donning an expensive-looking tuxedo. He had an air of importance around him (a CEO or a member of the board, perhaps?) but he had a carefree laugh and an accommodating attitude, leading Manami to conclude that he was the host of the party. She momentarily stiffened, however, when she noticed that his gaze fell on her. "And this must be your daughter!" He said with a chuckle, after a slight pause. Manami managed a smile at him and gave him a polite and graceful bow, in true fashion of a well-bred young lady. "Manami's a second year music student at Seiso," her father said, a hint of pride lacing his baritone voice. As Manami straightened her posture, she noticed the impressed look on the host's face. She mentally slapped her forehead. Whenever conversations like these turn to her major and her school, it would usually conclude with... "A music student in such a fine school! What instrument do you play?" "I play the piano, sir." "Marvelous! Perhaps later, you could treat us to a piece?" As she had predicted, a performance request. This is was the sole reason why she didn't want her father bragging about her being a piano student in Seiso Academy. In a ratio of three out of five parties, she would almost always end up playing a piece or two to entertain the party guests. Not that she didn't like performing -- she was always happy to play the piano for people. But impromptu performances always gave her jitters and made her stomach churn funnily. Despite the deep desire to decline, Manami smiled weakly and bowed her head. "I would be honored to, sir." The middle-aged host nodded, looking rather pleased. "Excellent, excellent. I look forward to it, my dear. Why don't you find yourselves a table now? The food is going to be served in a while." One of the ushers then came forward and escorted the family to one of the empty tables in the middle of the spacious, beautifully-decorated hall. As they weaved their way through chattering guests and serving waiters, Manami could not help but think that this was going to be a long night. |

The main majority of people would say that Saturday is their favorite day of the week. They could almost always count on Saturday to be the day signaling the end of a busy and stressful week, providing a 24-hour sanctuary from work or other burdensome tasks. Hiroyuki would have to disagree. As far as he was concerned, Saturdays were troublesome and annoying, to say the least. Take today, for example. -x- Yuki frowned at his reflection in the mirror. "Why exactly do I have to go again?" He turned and gave a slight glare to his mom, who was doing some last-minute makeup changes. Shiori just smiled at her son, refusing to answer the same question he'd been asking for the last hour. She walked up and adjusted his tie before he pushed her away, a slight tinge of red forming on his cheeks. He was 17 now, and quite old enough to do most things himself without the help of his mother. * * * * * As Hiroyuki stepped out of the car, he looked up at the humongous hotel. He was used to seeing extravagant buildings like this one; Shiori was frequently invited to many high-class parties for her musical skills (the source of his woeful Saturdays). He sighed and shut the door, accompanying his parents to the entrance. The inside of the hotel was, as expected, immense and full of lavish decor. He watched, uninterested, as several people came up to his parents and made small talk. Shortly after their entrance, an usher led the family to their seats. As he waited for the food to arrive, Yuki stared blankly into space, wishing the night would end more quickly. A sudden hand on his shoulder startled him out of his semi-daze. "So, is this your son, Shiori-san? My, my. You should have told me your son was this handsome; I would've introduced him to my daughter sooner!" A good-natured laugh escaped the mouth of the host of the party. Hiroyuki glanced at Kobayashi, recognizing him from the last formal party he'd went to. His parents stood up to say greetings to their longtime acquaintance. As the jolly-looking host and his parents began a pleasant conversation, Yuki's eyes wandered off to land on... Manami? |

One thing that Manami noticed about parties was how terribly monotonous conversations between guests (and even hosts) tended to be. Whether it be in elaborate corporate parties or just simple casual gatherings, the adults almost always talk about the same stuff. In fact, after observing several conversations around her from parties past, Manami had come to the conclusion that all small talks followed a definite pattern, which usually goes like this: First is an enthusiastic greeting which would start off the conversation. "Ah, Mori-san! It's good to see you here!" Followed by an inquiry for one's health or well-being. "Ah, Kawamoto-san! How are you?" "Never better my friend. And how about you?" "I'm doing quite well myself, thank you." Which would branch off to a comment about the spouse or the child(ren), whoever the person notices first. "Your wife looks as young as ever. It's nice to see you again, madam. And this must be your daughter! She's grown to be such a pretty lady, hasn't she?" "You flatter me too much, Kawamoto-san." Soft chuckle. "It's nice to see you again." "Good evening to you, sir." Slight bow. And would eventually go to the main topic. "Kobayashi-san's thrown an extremely extravagant party, hasn't he?" "You'd expect nothing less from one of the executive directors, of course." "Ah, I remember during last Friday's meeting that you proposed a plan for..." As soon as she started hearing words like "corporate budget" and "marketing strategies", Manami immediately zoned out of the conversation and instead, leaned back against her chair and took out her phone from her purse. It was almost quarter to eight now, according to the phone's display, and there was still no food in sight. The 'in a while' the host had said when he mentioned food earlier was certainly taking much, much longer. If Manami disliked the socialization, formality and constraint of such fancy gatherings, the opposite could be said about the food. For her, food was the only thing that made parties like this worth going to. After all, it wasn't everyday that she would get to eat gourmet (although her grandmother's cooking still reigns supreme for her taste buds). But until the food was served, there was really nothing much to do except sit down and maybe watch the guests and listen in on their conversations (if they were interesting enough, that is). Well, she could always talk to other people. She noticed, as she scanned the place, that there were kids around her age too, but they were all huddled in a corner and seemed to know each other already. This slightly dampened her desire to socialize with them -- she knew well enough that approaching a certain group of people and trying to make small talk could sometimes lead to awkward exchanges. There was the possibility of feeling out of place too. Her gaze then wandered to a table not far away from hers and fell on a boy, who seemed to be looking in her direction as well. She furrowed her brows at him in wonder. Two seconds later, she realized who he was. "Kozu-kun!" She called out, managing a slight wave and a smile. And just when she thought she didn't know anyone, a classmate showed up. What a pleasant surprise this was! ooc: Rin, I'm so sorry for the delay in reply! >.> I hope this post is okay~ |

Hiroyuki stared at Manami, his mind in well-concealed confusion. Mori-san is here? Why? Then, as a slight afterthought: ...She's wearing a dress.... He was almost startled as he noticed her looking back at him. He noted, with slight... disappointment? relief? that she didn't seem to recognize him. But a couple seconds later, he heard a joyful "Kozu-kun!". Well. It seemed like he might have some company after all, even if the person happened to be someone he (supposedly) disliked. Yuki returned neither the smile nor the wave, but continued to stare at Manami, trying to figure out what to say. "Hiro? Kobayashi-san asked you something." Takumi tapped his son on the shoulder, indicating that everyone was waiting for Hiroyuki to say something. Hiroyuki, startled, returned his attention to his family. "What was the question?" As Takumi looked at the host apologetically, Shiori followed her son's line of vision and saw immediately who he was looking at. Nudging her husband and winking discreetly, she said politely to Kobayashi, "I'm sorry, my son can't answer your question right now. He was about to go talk to one of his friends; I hope you don't mind?" After the host of the party laughed and said it was fine, Shiori gestured, smiling, to Manami. "See, he said it was fine, Hiro. You can go ahead and talk to her now." Hiroyuki sweated. Was his mom plotting something? His suspicions were almost confirmed when he noticed the glint in his mother's eye. Excusing himself from the table, Yuki walked over to his classmate, thinking about how much he would have rather stayed with his family. "...Hello, Mori-san. What are you doing here?" Bahaha. Of course it's fine! I myself have not been replying to most threads for a month or two now... TT__TT; Oh, and sorry for the shortness... there wasn't much else to write. :3 |

What Manami got in exchange for that cheerful greeting was merely a long, hard stare. She couldn't decide at first whether that stare projected displeasure or indifference but it really didn't matter in the end. It was typical of Kozu Hiroyuki to answer greetings like that anyway. In fact, if he had smiled and had said "Hello", Manami would have had a terrible shock. She was already used to him acting all cold and aloof every God-given second. Being his desk neighbor for almost two years had given her the immunity to that kind of attitude. Besides, no matter how much Hiroyuki complained about being pestered by her and despite the many times he had told her to go away and bother someone else, he never really made any effort to avoid her completely . Perhaps -- Manami thought smugly -- deep down, Hiroyuki secretly enjoyed her company. (She mentally added this to the list of things she could tease him with.) The brunette was about to excuse herself from the table to go over and talk to him when Hiroyuki suddenly turned away from her. He began conversing with the other people sitting at his table who, Manami reckoned, must be his parents. Making a nonchalant shrug, she tore her gave from his direction and instead busied herself by fiddling with her phone. It would be rude of her to just walk over there now and interrupt their conversation. Perhaps later would be a better time to approach him. "...Hello, Mori-san. What are you doing here?" Manami looked up at the sound of Hiroyuki's voice and was surprised to find him standing next to her instead of sitting at his table. She stole a quick glance at her parents; they were still in the middle of a serious discussion with Kawamoto-san and they did not seem to notice the new arrival at their table. Oh well. The introductions would have to wait for a while then. She turned back to Hiroyuki and pointed to the empty chair beside her, motioning for him to sit down. "I was just planning to go over and ask you the same question. It's so unlike you to be the first one approaching people." Her lips quirked up to an amused smile as she gave him a quick once-over. He certainly looked dashing in that prim, expensive-looking suit, but the slight frown on his face marred the gentlemanly aura he supposedly exuded. "Don't look so sullen now; I didn't expect to see you here either," Manami remarked with a soft chuckle. "My parents were invited to this party and they decided to bring me along." Eyeing the boy curiously, she leaned closer and asked in a much lower voice, "You got dragged by your parents too?" [ooc: Hiro's mom is plotting something? This should be interesting. xD;] |

Hiroyuki took a somewhat hesitant seat, hoping he wouldn't have to sit in it too long. He looked at his parents pointedly, hoping they would understand that no, this person was not his "friend", and that he would much rather be sitting anywhere but here. All he got, however, was an encouraging smile from his mother. He sighed. "I was just planning to go over and ask you the same question. It's so unlike you to be the first one approaching people." Yuki opened his mouth and shut it again. Should he tell her that his mother forced him over here? ...Probably not. "You got dragged by your parents too?" Hiroyuki nodded solemnly. "Yes." Shrugging, he added, "But I'm used to it by now." He subconsciously moved backwards a bit after noticing the sudden closeness of his classmate. He had a personal bubble, and he didn't appreciate having it popped. Yuki shifted uncomfortably. He really didn't have much to say to her... or to anyone, in fact. He glanced somewhat expectantly at Manami, knowing that she would always have something to say. Maybe that was why he never tried his hardest to avoid her. Hiroyuki mused quietly to himself that although she was annoying, he didn't hate her. "Annoying" still counted as "major dislike", though. ...Or so he forced himself to think. |

Manami let out a sigh and sat back against her chair again after Hiroyuki responded to her inquiry with a deadpan expression and a nonchalant shrug. "Good for you then," she said, managing a small smile. "No matter how many times I attend these kinds of occasions, I really can't get used to them. They're too stiff for me." She threw the boy beside her a sideway glance and noticed that although he looked slightly reluctant to be around her, he was actually paying attention to her and seemingly hanging onto her every word. After a brief moment of silence, she spoke up again. "It's really too bad. I was planning to practice that school festival piece tonight but then my parents said I should come along. You seem to be pretty comfortable though," she noted, smiling at him slightly. "You enjoy these kinds of parties?" Not that she had anything to say that would be of interest to him but even so, it felt strangely nice to be able to talk to Hiroyuki like this. Normal exchanges between them were often a constant cycle of teasing and snarking and smart-ass comments flying back and forth. There had always been tension and animosity between them. But it was completely different this time -- the atmosphere was easygoing and comfortable. Absently, Manami wondered why they have never had a proper conversation like this before. |

"You enjoy these kinds of parties?" Hiroyuki raised his eyebrows. Enjoy? The formalities, classiness, and stiffness... well, he supposed the stiffness was already always a part of his personality, so it didn't seem to make much of a difference where he was. Hm. Maybe "enjoy" was not quite the word that described his attitude toward formal parties, but "hate" wasn't so accurate either. "...Not really." Yuki looked around, trying to ignore the somewhat awkward atmosphere. Someone else might have described it as "easygoing" and "comfortable", but to him it was just... awkward. He couldn't think of anything else to say. Should he head back to his own table now? Just then, a waiter came by, carefully balancing some appetizers in his hands. Hiroyuki looked in an almost eager anticipation at the food, grateful that a distraction had come to save him. --- *shot for having no imagination* |
