Who: Mori Manami and Izumi Ran (perhaps Taro would want to join later? XD) Where and When: School Cafeteria, Lunchtime What: Wherein Manami stalks her best friend's current love interest but does not do a very good job of being discrete about it. "Manami, your book is upside-down." A flustered "oops" escaped Mori Manami's lips as she hurriedly turned the book to the right way up. She flushed slightly at her silly blunder but maintained her composure as she shifted on her seat. Slowly, she gave the place a sweeping glance from behind the covers of Understanding Music Theory, Third Edition by Shimaki Kazuki and Mitsui Akane. A mesh of black and white appeared in her line of vision as students from both music and gen-ed departments streamed inside the cafeteria for lunch, bringing their animated chatters and laughter with them. Across her, Mai, a friend and unwilling companion, heaved a sigh before propping an elbow onto the table and resting her chin on it. She furrowed her brows at Manami asked, "Why are you doing this again?" "To find out about the new girl Katagiri's after." Manami replied nonchalantly as she gave a group of girls that passed by their table a long, scrutinizing stare. Discretely, of course. "Why don't you just ask him then?" "I'm sure he wouldn't tell me. I can never talk to him about these things seriously. And I don't want him to feel that I'm prodding too much on his life." "But isn't this already prodding too much? I thought you guys were supposed to be best friends or something. And you know, Katagiri is Seiso's resident womanizer. There is always a new girl. Why all the trouble for this one?" Manami let out a breath before laying the book flat on the table. It was rather heavy and holding it upright was beginning to make her forearms ache. "Well, I heard that this one's not like the other girls. The other day I heard Kitazawa whining that the new girl was so plain and ordinary and that Katagiri should have just gone after her instead." Mai's eyebrows shot up with interest at the mention of Kitazawa, who was one of the prettiest girls in their batch. Not surprisingly, she has a huge crush on the infamous Katagiri Taro, and she made sure that everyone knew about it by gushing about him every chance she got. "Really now? That's news." She gave the brunette across her a look. "Still doesn't explain why you're so keen on finding out about this one." "I'm just concerned for both of them, that's all." "This is one weird and funny way of showing concern, I'll tell you," Mai said with an amused snort. She stretched out her hands before standing up from the bench. "Ah, I'm starved! I'm going to buy lunch. Want anything?" Manami shook her head. "No thanks. Obaasan packed me a bento." She raised the wrapped bento box for the other girl to see before giving a smile and waving her off. As Mai sauntered off to the food counter, the sophomore pianist slumped forward onto the table, resting her chin on the open textbook. She probably thinks I'm weird, she told herself as she watched Mai make small talk with another classmate who was also queuing up for the combo meals section. She wouldn't blame Mai if she really though that way though; looking back on their earlier exchange, her reason did sound weird and illogical. But taking everything into consideration, there was really no better rationalization for what she was doing other than concern. She reckoned that even if she tried to explain why she was concerned, Mai would probably not understand since she had not known Taro before high school. Izumi Ran was the girl's name, Manami had heard. Gen-ed, Class 2-4's president. Taro's seatmate. Girls from her batch who were unofficial members of the Taro fan club had been talking about it since a week past. She had hung out with Taro just days prior and he had not mentioned a single thing about this to her. Which was not surprising, really, since he probably thought that he would only get a sermon in the end about the dangers of flirting from someone who had never even flirted before (oh, the irony). Manami wasn't doing it intentionally to ruin her best friend's life and steal his fun, of course. It was only her own big-sisterly way of looking after him. And so, after much eavesdropping on unreliable gossip and hearsay, Manami decided to find out about this new girl herself. The constant talks had perked up her curiosity, and she wanted to see what this girl was really like and perhaps get a chance talk to her as well. She considered giving a friendly warning too ('Don't fall for Katagiri's sweet words!'), but that would depend on how things would go today. Either way, Manami assured herself there was nothing really wrong with what she was doing (or rather, would be doing). It was merely an attempt to look out for both parties and perhaps spare them from the possibility of getting hurt later on. Mai had told her that no, it wasn't a heroic act, it was stalking. Manami argued that it was merely finding out information. Mai countered that sneaking around to find information was still stalking. Manami simply reasoned that it was more like detective work than stalking. Another group of gen-ed girls walked past her table and Manami discretely turned her gaze towards them. Whether she was indeed stalking or not was not the important matter at hand; finding out about Izumi Ran was. |

Ah, the joys of lunch. The time where friends can just goof off and relax inside the cafeteria as they eat their favorite food. Where food fights can be held, yet no one will care, since someone would always end up pieing the most hated teacher. Suspension? No such thing. The teacher was a class act, and his face was too filled with pie cream that he never figured out who the perpretrator was. Everyday the honor would switch from 3rd year bad boys to 1st year shy girls. Whatever or whoever it was, lunch was the best part of the day. Even for Ran, the most nervous and timid 2nd year on the planet. Though she had befriended two of the popular people within Seiso (Katagiri Taro and Takehara Suzume), they would usually flock in their own groups during lunch, and Ran was either too shy to parade into the party, or she didn't like some of the people within them. Taro would be surrounded by dozens of pretty girls, all rich and fabulous. Those ladies always belittled her, and always made her feel so bad. Suzume would be with her best girl friends (Like Koizumi Yuuki, who she didn't really mind, though Ran would feel like she was the third wheel if she joined in) or with the jocks, who always intimidated her tiny ego. And there was no one else. Her idea of a perfect lunch was completely different from everyone else. 1. Eat lunch Kanji made at the cafeteria. No special spot included. 2. Go up to the roof/fields and continue drawing her manga or just random sketches until lunch is over. That was it, and Ran was ecstatic every time the lunch bell rang. The worst of it all was to find a seat in the cafeteria. Some groups need to have this specific spot to sit every single day. However, since Ran doesn't have a posse, she has no particular seat to sit at. It made her feel lonely and sad. Luckily, today she quickly found an empty seat. It was right next to some music department student that she couldn't recognize. Ran, clenching her bento, scurried to the seat quickly before anyone else could steal it. "U-um...is this seat taken...?" Ran cautiously asked with her usual, quiet and shy tone. |

Minutes trickled by ever so slowly, and as students continued to pour inside the cafeteria, Manami struggled to maintain her vigilant watch in hopes of finally sighting the talk of Seiso's second year gen-ed department: Izumi Ran, more popularly known as Katagiri Taro's new girl (much to the idol's fangirls' chagrin). It was a rather arduous task though. Red-tied girls strutted in front of and past her table at a rate of about seven to nine a minute and they were usually gone even before the brunette could give them a good scrutinizing stare, point a finger and exclaim: 'Aha! I found you, Izumi Ran!'. (She would never say that aloud of course, but everyone was entitled to their own mental 'Eureka!' moment.) Admittedly, she knew deep down that she was asking for something nearly impossible. Singling out a person you've never even seen before in a crowd of about hundreds was bordering absurdity. Manami only had a vague description of the girl as reference -- '..short brown hair, sorta orangey eyes, small, timid and totally unspectacular,' according to the aforementioned music sophomore, 'it' girl Kitazawa -- and Manami wasn't even sure if that was entirely reliable (but since the other rumors say the same thing, she garnered that it was probably true). It wasn't as if she could stroll into the gen-ed department and track down the girl either -- she would stand out too much, people would suspect something and Taro would find out (which sort of beats her purpose). So this was actually the next best thing. But it was still a gamble. There was a near-zero probability that she would find the right girl right away, but it was worth a try. Manami might be laidback most of the time, but she could be tenacious when needed to be. (Unfortunately, the latter usually happened when the matters at hand were not so consequential, like this one.) A few more seconds passed, slower than ever, and soon the spying second-year felt the pangs of hunger overtake her. She tried to suppress the overwhelming feeling ('I can't be eating now; I might miss Izumi Ran!') but her stomach only resorted to grumbling every three seconds -- each grumble seemingly louder than the last -- to drive the point that no, it cannot wait until ten, fifteen or twenty minutes later, it wanted food now. So she caved in. After all, a detective -- she fondly called herself that, just for today, because she was essentially doing detective work even if Mai kept insisting that she in fact, stalking -- needed replenisment too, in the form of a gourmet-looking, seafood-themed bento. Manami gave the place one last sweeping glance, on the look out for any short-haired brunettes, before mumbling a solemn 'Itadakimasu'. "U-um...is this seat taken...?" Her chopsticks hovered over the bento as she looked up. A girl stood in front of her table, timidly carrying a bento with both hands. '..short brown hair, sorta orangey eyes, small, timid and totally unspectacular..' Could this be Izumi Ran? Manami's heart began racing wildly in excitement. It could be this girl! She fitted the descriptions perfectly and she was wearing a red tie too! She gave the girl her best smile and an emphatic shake of the head while motioning to the space across her. "Douzo." She kept her eyes on the girl as she slowly took her seat and fumbled with the wrappings of her bento box. If this girl did turn out to be Izumi Ran, then Lady Luck must have been smiling at her today for she managed to hit the jackpot without much effort at all. [ooc: Sorry for the long delay Ka-chan! I hope this was okay even if it was a bit crappy. xD;] |

"Douzo." Ran beamed happily, and sat next to the music student. She slowly unfolded the wrapped bento and opened the lid to see her most favorite lunch. Kanji knew her well. To her left was a very talkative gen-ed student who was probably a third year. She and her friends were laughing at the nerds on what they labelled "the losers' table." How cruel... Ran whimpered, feeling awfully sorry for the people there. What was wrong for being a NEET, or a highly intelligent fellow who was not so incapable with the latest trends? Ran could never understand why people have to insult another to feel more assured of themselves. Maybe it was because Ran was never confident of herself to begin with. She twisted her head to her right to see the girl who had gleefully allowed her to sit by her. Ran thought that she was really pretty, and noticed how her fingers were long and slender. Could she be a pianist? Ran thought. She began to grow curious as to what kind of instrument the music-ed student played. Ran, of course, loved classical music. Sadly, she didn't know a lot of music-ed people. However, Ran had this weird sensation in her heart. It felt as if she had seen this person before. Coincidence? Ran didn't know. She just seemed awfully familiar. Being silent for at least five minutes was enough to crush Ran. She wanted to start a conversation with someone so she could break the ice. Yet, it was so hard to. She lighlty slapped herself, and tried starting a conversation with the music student right of her. "U-uh...what instrument do you play...uh...," Ran paused, realizing that she didn't know the girl's name. Obviously. "Uh...." Ran kept stuttering until she stuffed a fried shrimp into her mouth and looked embarrassingly away. |

As soon as the girl was seated comfortably next to her, Manami turned back to her bento. Taking a small bite from her shrimp tempura and shoving some rice in her mouth, she quietly pondered on the best way to proceed with this plan. What she had surmised so far was that this girl might even be more timid than what the rumors say, judging from her very cautious movements and rather apprehensive expressions. And as much as Manami want to ask if the girl was indeed Izumi Ran, she figured that it would probably be better to wait for an opportunity to introduce themselves. Confirming her identity was the important part of this stage; the information would just follow. The brunette went about her meal, and bid her time. It would not be too soon now. She tried not to mind the awkward silence that was beginning to settle over the table or the seemingly long stretch of time before the ice was finally broken. "U-uh... what instrument do you play...uh...." Manami noticed, as she turned to the girl, that she was trying really hard to get the words out of her mouth in order to start a conversation, but thinking that perhaps it was a futile attempt, she merely looked away in abashment. The brunette could only give a small smile at the girl's action. Perhaps it might take a while before she could get the girl to be more lax and lose the excessive timidity. "Mori Manami," she said, finishing the girl's sentence amiably. "I'm a piano major from Class 2-A. You're a second year too, right? What's your name?" ----- [ooc: Apologies for the long delay and the fail post! >.>] |

"Mori Manami. I'm a piano major from Class 2-A. You're a second year too, right? What's your name?" Ran's eyes gleamed as she turned her head around. She started a conversation! She really did! With a piano student no less! A sense of accomplishment whirled inside of her. She can finally (possibly) become friends with a person who can play the piano! Ran loved classical music, so she was utterly disappointed at herself that she didn't have any instrument-playing friends. "U-uh! I'm Izumi Ran..! Gen-ed in Class 2-4...ah!" Ran's eyes widened in surprised after her greeting. She had just realized why the person was so familiar to her. Ran often seen her hanging out with Katagiri Taro at times, seemingly to be really good friends with him. Every time Ran saw her with Taro, she would always skimper away in embarrassment. So that's where she saw her! Then she grew silent and pale. "Ah..! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell out like that..!" Ran apologized as she released all eye contact with the music student. She turned back to her bento and stuffed fried shrimp into her mouth. |
