Who: Takehara Suzume, Manami Mori, Katagiri Taro
When: 1 week after "Merry Minuet"
Where: At Seiso & Akayama Sweets
What: Manami and Taro meet Suzume
-----------------------------------

"Go, Taro-kuuuuun~! Score that goal!"
"Kyaaaa! Taro-kun is really cool!"
"Did he just look this way? Oh my god, he winked at me!"

It certainly took a lot of self-restraint for Manami to keep her butt on the bench she was sitting on instead of walking over to the group of girls huddled a few steps away and telling them in a matter-of-fact voice: "Shut up please, and spare my eardrums any damage." She knew well enough that it was a bad idea to get in between 'The Official Katagiri Taro Fanclub' and their object of obsession, and much worse, to suppress their proclamations of love for the campus idol. When it came it rabidness, no one could beat these girls and the last thing Manami needed right now was to have the lot of them after her throat.

The brunette channeled all exasperation to a heavy sigh that escaped her lips as she propped an elbow against her knee and rested her chin on it. Tearing her gaze away from the girls, she instead focused on the soccer field where the team was currently having a practice match. She spotted Taro on the far end of the field, all poised for action. A member of the opposing team ran up to him with the ball, about to attempt a goal, and a few impressive maneuvers later, Taro managed to make a successful block.

I wonder how long this game is going to take, Manami mused vaguely as she watched Taro exchange high-fives with his teammates while the girls near her gave a collective squeal. She really didn't mind waiting but she certainly hoped that Taro had not forgotten about the plan from last week. She had been looking forward to it all day.

That, and she wished those girls would move away and leave her in peace.

As the referee's whistle echoed in the field to signal game play, Manami figured that she should just enjoy the game while waiting for her friend. After all -- she smiled as her eyes flitted to a certain green-haired boy who was now in possession of the ball -- Tsuchiura was in the team too and it wasn't everyday that she got to watch him play.

Taro lived for moments like that. The girls were screaming their souls out for him and he was probably playing the best game of his life. Encouraged by the deafening cries of his unofficial fanclub, the young defender won every single duel on the field and consequently knocked the ball out of the penalty area in dangerous situations. Taro rarely scored any goals in games (it was not his task as a defender, anyway) but he was nevertheless a valuable part of the team due to his qualities as a defender. His team mates even took to calling him “steely Taro”, a name which he rather liked because he automatically associated it with manliness, muscles and a washboard stomach, three things which weren’t exactly characteristic of the teenage womanizer. But even without steely muscles the girls were crazy for him; what more could you ask for? Taro ran his fingers through his wet hair and made a v-sign at his female fans.

“Thank you, ladies, you are the best~!”

The “ladies” were more than delighted about the fanservice and in the next moment, everyone was frantically taking photos of their idol with their cell phones. The boy enjoyed it and struck several peculiar poses on the field, but the photo session was cut tragically short by the coach’s impatient rebuke (“Katagiri! Concentrate on this damned match or I’ll replace you!”).

For the remaining twenty minutes of the game Taro faithfully fulfilled his tasks on the field, even assisting on the game-winning goal scored by Seiso’s top-scorer, Tsuchiura Ryotarou. In the end, Seiso won 1:0 against their opponents from Toho High and it was their ninth victory in series. Back in the changing room, the boys wheedled the coach into treating the entire team to lunch, but Taro politely rejected the invitation. He explained to his astonished team mates that he had something to do and hurried out of the changing room to the place where Mori was waiting.

Although she wasn't a big fan of soccer, Manami found herself getting into the game more and more as the minutes ticked by. Of course, she didn't go as far as standing up and cheering frantically for their team to show her enthusiasm and support -- she left that deed to the fangirls (there were a lot of them anyway). But she did find herself pumping a fist excitedly whenever a Seiso player stole the ball from the enemy or blocked an attempt to score a goal and cursing silently whenever a team member got penalized or injured.

In the end, Seiso won. Tsuchiura scored the winning goal -- rather spectacularly, she might add -- and the fangirls broke into a frenzied cheer. A wide smile spread on Manami's lips as the final whistle blew and she gave a polite applause when the winner was announced. It was rather amusing to watch the boys all huddle up in the middle of the field, bumping chests and high-fiving each other for a game well-played.

As the team streamed into the locker rooms, Manami let out a breath and propped her hands behind her as she sat back on the bench. The game was over. Now, she just had to wait for Taro to get changed and they could finally set off for Akayama Sweets.

Minutes later, successive high-pitched screams echoed once again in the brunette's poor ears.

"Oh my god, oh my god!"
"Wha-- Ah! It's Taro-kuuuun~!"
"He's looking this way! Oh my god, he's walking this way!"

And I thought they had gone already. Craning her neck to side, Manami gave the girls a long-suffering stare before her eyes followed the direction they were frantically pointing at. She spotted Taro amongst the dispersing crowd, weaving his way through the bleachers towards her with a sports bag in tow.

Her face lit up as she raised a hand in greeting. "About time!" She called out with a teasing grin when he was finally within earshot. She stood up from the bench, straightened her uniform, and slung her bag over her shoulder as she waited for him to reach her.

Although the arranged meeting point wasn’t far away from the locker rooms, Taro needed over twenty minutes to arrive there. Small clusters of fan girls stopped him on the way to Mori and asked him countless questions about the members of the soccer team. Some of them wanted to know where the team was meeting after the match (they probably wanted to celebrate with the boys and hook a potential date), others simply wanted to fangirl over Taro. Taro smiled – he liked being the center of attention – and answered every question with the patience of an angel until the clusters slowly disbanded.

"Sorry for the wait, Mori“, Taro shouted, running toward his friend after the fan girls were finally gone, “I was delayed by some charming ladies ~ Let’s hurry up and go to that shop now, shall we? I am starving ---!"

Apart from hunger, there was another reason for Taro's enthusiasm and interest in Akayama Sweets. To tell the truth, he was less interested in the food than in the person who was going to sell it to him at the shop. It was Taro who had suggested visiting the shop with Mori on a Thursday; mainly because his mother had told him about a particular shop assistant's working schedule. Mori did not know anything about Taro's secret plan; he thought that it was best not to tell her.

“Hey, Mori, did you know that wagashi are classified according to the production method and moisture content?”

Trying not to act suspicious in front of his childhood friend, Taro started to talk about different kinds of sweets on their way to the shop. Unfortunately, he had the tendency to overdo everything so that even the most innocent listener would sooner or later suspect something fishy behind his endlessly long and cheerful blabbering. “I never knew that the style of sakuramochi differed from the regions in Japan! Don’t you think it's great? Eastern regions use rice flour whereas western regions use glutinous rice flour for batter – isn’t that interesting?”

Upon seeing the hoard of fangirls flock towards their beloved idol, Manami could only shake her head and heave out a long, drawn-out breath. 'This is going to take a while, she muttered to herself, crossing her arms over her chest as she patiently waited for the hoopla to finish. When the last fangirl had walked off, cradling a notebook reverently towards her chest ('Probably asked for his autograph.'), Taro then ran up to where she was waiting. The smug grin on his face was unmissable.

"Sorry for the wait, Mori! I was delayed by some charming ladies ~ Let’s hurry up and go to that shop now, shall we? I am starving ---!"

"Ah finally; I thought those girls weren't going to let you off!" She uttered with a relieved sigh as soon as he came near. Admittedly, all that waiting had caused her stomach to crumble its defenses and succumb to grumbling and she was more than glad that they were finally going to where the food was -- Akayama Sweets. As she fell in step beside him, she elbowed him rather playfully and said with a grin, "I hope you haven't forgotten that you're treating me today."

For a day in the mid-autumn season, this Thursday was unexpectedly a sunny one. Of course the slow changes in temperature could already be felt with every breeze that sweeps through downtown Yokohama. But today's weather had just enough sunshine and wind for a nice walk outside.

“Hey, Mori, did you know that wagashi are classified according to the production method and moisture content?”

Manami, who was stretching out her arms and enjoying the scent of the autumn air, turned to her childhood friend with a puzzled look on her face. It was uncharacteristic of Taro to be babbling about Japanese sweets all of a sudden. As far as she knew, it was one of the last things he'd talk to her about (usually girls and soccer top the list). She found this behavior rather unusual.

“I never knew that the style of sakuramochi differed from the regions in Japan! Don’t you think it's great? Eastern regions use rice flour whereas western regions use glutinous rice flour for batter – isn’t that interesting?”

Manami raised a questioning eyebrow at him. "Since when did you become so interested in Japanese sweets? I don't think you even like them that much." Furrowing her brows at him, she intoned curiously, "Am I missing something?"

"Am I missing something?"

Taro gulped and tightened his grip around his bag, ready to cover his face with it at any moment so that he could avoid his friend’s gaze.‘This is bad…this is bad!’ Mori’s deathly and inquiring stare made Taro feel like a criminal at the police station.

“Ahaha, what do you mean?” Determined not to make Mori more suspicious than she already was, Taro forced out a "cheerful" laugh and played dumb. However, contrary to the innocent expression he wore on his face, his hands subconsciously started to fidget with his collar; an action which clearly betrayed his nervousness. “I’ve always been very interested in Japanese Sweets, I just...didn’t tell you about it.”

When he noticed the lack of response from Mori (who, by the way, was still looking daggers at him), Taro felt the need to make more excuses which, of course, made things even worse.

“Why are you still looking at me like that? There’s no need to be suspicious! I came here because I wanted to buy some sweets and not because I wanted to meet girls in dark blue yukata with light blue diamond sha ---!”

Taro suddenly stopped short; his hands shot up to his mouth. He couldn't believe that he was stupid enough to blab out his secret. Chances were high that Mori knew about the staff’s uniform and all she had to do now was to put two and two together and to lecture him about the bad of womanizing for the rest of the day. Just his luck (and stupidity).

“I, uh, also like red yukata with dark orange circles?” Taro mumbled quietly as a last attempt to distract Mori’s succinct mind. The usually smug and confident boy seemed to shrink with every word he spoke. “It doesn’t have to be blue with diamonds, you know…I like all yukata…they’re great and pretty and nice…and…HA!” An exclamation of relief broke from his lips the moment he saw the "Akayama Sweets" shop sign a few metres away. Taro picked up the pace and pushed his friend into the store. “There we are, let’s get inside, shall we, Mori-chan~?”

The shop wasn’t very big, but it conveyed a cosy feeling to its customers. The inside was decorated in a rather old-fashioned way and looked completely different from the usual sweet shops in the city. The atmosphere in the shop had a soothing effect on awkward Taro. After regaining his composure, he scanned the shop with a swift glance before his eyes came to rest on a figure behind the counter. A girl was standing with her back turned to him, her hair was neatly tied up and she was – as his mother had told him – dressed in a blue yukata. ‘That must be her…!’ Without thinking twice, he cleared his throat and “assaulted” the poor girl with one of his horribly cheesy pickup-line:

“Someone should call the police - I think heaven’s missing an angel ~”

Little did he know that he was actually hitting on the girl he wanted to meet the least.

Roleplayer: Takehara Suzume

It had been a good day so far. In the morning, Suzume had helped her aunt and uncle prepare to open the shop before school, and everything had gone unusually smoothly. At school, she had gotten a very good mark on her math assignment and she correctly translated a few lines out of the English textbook in front of the class. Once school was over, she had relieved Shimura-san at the shop, and since then, her shift was going very well - quiet, no difficult customers, everything neat and tidy.

She should have known it was too good to be true.

Just a little less than two hours into her shift, she had decided to clean and organize the shelves behind her. The store had hit a quiet period and there were no customers to serve, so engaging in such a task would at least keep her busy for the time being. Humming a tune softly to herself, Suzume set about removing some of the items from the shelves, giving them a quick wipe-down with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt, before returning the items to their places, aligning them into neat little lines.

Just then, the shop's front door opened, the little bell chiming the arrival of a new customer. Or rather, customers, judging from the sound of the footsteps and the conversation. Suzume quickly wiped off her hands on a clean towel, placed a smile on her face, whirled around to face the customers, and in her most polite voice, said, "Irrasshaimase!", just as one of the customers said, "Someone should call the police - I think heaven’s missing an angel ~”

Suzume instantly froze, her voice catching in her throat, as she realized who it was: Katagiri Taro. And, of course, he had brought along a girl, who was unfamiliar and was wearing the standard Music Ed uniform with a deep red bow at the base of her throat. She blinked a little in confusion, unsure of what to say or do.

Did Katagiri just...flirt with her?!

Her gut reaction to that thought was: ew, gross. Then, 'what the hell?!' And finally, irritation overrode her shock and, hidden within the sleeves of her yukata, her fingers twitched slightly, itching to grab something - anything - to throw at her glasses-wearing rival. In the corner of her eye, Suzume spotted a skewer of dango that she had been planning to snack on during her break (with the permission of her aunt, of course). Like a quick flash of lightning, the image of throwing the dango in Katagiri's face came to mind, and she was severely tempted to act on such an idea. However, the thought of her stern Aunt Chiyoko upstairs made her pause and rethink that.

So to prevent her hands from doing anything rash, Suzume crossed her arms, her hands hidden in her long sleeves. "So, Taro-rin! What a surprise to find you here of all places. Are you on a date or something? Poor Ran-chan would be mortified if she knew! Have you given up on her already? And unfortunately, your cheesy pick-up lines won't work on me. Better luck next time, eh?"

Manami knew for a fact that Taro had a tendency to handle direct confrontations badly. While he could get away with things every now and then, he would still commit slight mishaps that often betrayed his true intentions. And it was often easy to pick up the cues since she had been around him for years now. Like that unnecessary fidgeting with his collar. Or that restless shifting of the eyes and the nervous laugh.

He was definitely hiding something and she was determined to find out. She gave him inquiring but deadly and piercing glare for good measure.

“Why are you still looking at me like that? There’s no need to be suspicious! I came here because I wanted to buy some sweets and not because I wanted to meet girls in dark blue yukata with light blue diamond sha ---!”

Ah, so that was it! She should have known. She should have known earlier. Of course Taro would have never gone through the effort to read up on Japanese sweets (of all things!) if he wasn't planning on using the knowledge for something. Like hitting on a shop assistant at Akayama Sweets, for example.

Manami merely put her hands akimbo, glare still directed at her childhood friend. She was about to open her mouth and interrupt his spouting of silly excuses with a piece of her mind when she suddenly felt herself being pushed ahead when the 'Akayama Sweets' sign came into view.

“There we are, let’s get inside, shall we, Mori-chan~?”

"Katagiri, you--" She almost stumbled as her friend hurriedly ushered her inside the store; luckily she caught her footing before she fell face-first on the wooden floor. She quickly straightened her uniform and turned to glare at Taro, but she found nothing but air beside her.

"Someone should call the police - I think heaven’s missing an angel ~”

There we go again. Manami could not help but slap a hand against her forehead in pure exasperation. She had to admit that even if Taro had the reputation of a notorious skirt-chaser, he also had an arsenal of the cheesiest pickup lines known to man. (She had always wondered how those girls managed to fall for those words.)

Determined to save another poor soul from her best friend's womanizing ways, Manami strode up to the counter, where Taro was conveniently leaning against, in order to apologize for his brazen actions. Her footsteps came to halt, however, when the girl (a really pretty one, she noticed; definitely Taro's type) turned to the bespectacled lad and a look of surprise, and much later a mix of pure horror and utmost irritation, crossed her face.

"So, Taro-rin! What a surprise to find you here of all places. Are you on a date or something? Poor Ran-chan would be mortified if she knew! Have you given up on her already? And unfortunately, your cheesy pick-up lines won't work on me. Better luck next time, eh?"

The brunette's jaw almost dropped at the girl's response. This... this was definitely new. In all of Taro's courting trips (a few times of which she had been an unwilling companion; other times an unfortunate bystander), never had a girl given him an outright rejection like this one. Why, the girls Taro wooed always turned into blushing damsels and would immediately scribble their phone numbers on a scrap of paper and discretely hand it to him when he did nothing more than give them a full blast smile and say in his manliest voice, 'You're the prettiest girl I've ever seen' (or any variation thereof).

But this girl was different. Without even batting an eyelash, she turned down Seiso's famous womanizer in a single breath. Amazing. So girls that didn't fall for Taro's sweet words and charm still exist after all. (Yes, it was that eye-opening.)

Suffice to say, the brunette found the situation very amusing that she could not quite suppress the chuckles that had begun to peel from her mouth. Her shoulders slightly shook with mirth as she put a hand over her mouth to stifle the sounds -- she didn't want to embarrass her friend more than he already was. When she managed to tone down her laughter, she padded over to the counter and gave the shop assistant a courteous nod. "Please don't mind what he just said; he just has this impulsive tendency to flirt with anyone he sees."

Afterward, she turned to Taro; a teasing grin tugged at the sides of her lips as she nudged him with her elbow. "Well, that didn't exactly go well, did it?" she said in a much lower voice. Even if she did feel a bit sorry for her friend, she felt that this was probably one wake up call that he needed.

Taro took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. This was just a dream, right? After all, it was highly improbable that of all pretty girls in Yokohama, he would encounter her at Akayama Sweets. Maybe his eyes and ears were playing a trick on him? He supposed that sitting in front of Suzume every day was unhealthy in the long run and that he was merely having some hallucinations. But then again, the hallucination seemed surprisingly realistic...too realistic to be a mere dream or hallucination…

‘Wait…did I just flirt with Suzu-chin?! And does that mean that the nice shop assistant my mother talked about is actually Suzume?!’

Taro groaned. The pickup line was probably going to haunt him for the rest of his life; it felt as if he had just made the biggest mistake in his 16-years-old life. As the thoughts flooded in, his energy evaporated as quickly as his anticipation had brought it in and he wished that he had never come to this wicked shop in the first place.

“What are you doing here, Suzu-chin?! Why are you wearing a yukata and why is your hair so weird?!” He pointed his quivering fingers accusingly at her as if wearing a yukata and having your hair tied up was a crime. And it was indeed a crime to Taro, for if she hadn’t looked so different from behind, he would have never mistaken her for someone else and approached her with one of his precious pickup lines. Still visibly embarrassed by his lapse, Taro coughed and continued in a more amiable tone,

“May I introduce you to each other? Mori, this is Suzu-chin and Suzu-chin, this is Mori Manami.”

He bent over the show case of the sweets shop and pretended to examine the food. “Suzu-chin, I’m surprised that you’re working at a sweets shop – It doesn’t suit your character at all ~ Are the sweets in your shop home-made?”

He leaned over to Mori and whispered loudly enough that Suzume could hear, “I would take a careful look at the sweets first - Suzu-chin might have made some of them and I don’t want you to contract a food poisoning, Mori ~”

Suffice it to say, Suzume was very surprised when the pretty girl Katagiri had brought along with him burst into a fit of chuckles.

"Please don't mind what he just said; he just has this impulsive tendency to flirt with anyone he sees."

What a revelation! So, there were girls who didn't think Katagiri was God's gift to women! And this girl had been in Seiso all this time. Amazing! An ally! Suzume instantly took a liking to Katagiri's friend (since, by now, it was fairly obvious that this girl was not one of his many, many dates), and so she promptly took the plate of extra dango and offered it up to the brunette.

"Oh, I know! It's really quite sad," Suzume said, ignoring Katagiri for the moment, as if he wasn't standing right across from her at the counter. "By the way, you nearly fell earlier, right? I hope you didn't hurt yourself too badly. This place is kinda old so sometimes, we find uneven places in the floor. I can get my uncle to look at it later. In the meantime, please, have some dango, on the house. It's just some extra that my aunt said I could have."

“What are you doing here, Suzu-chin?! Why are you wearing a yukata and why is your hair so weird?!”

At this, Suzume placed her hands on her hips and frowned. "E-excuse me?! I work here, if you haven't noticed already, Taro-rin! You obviously missed the times I told you I had a job at my uncle's wagashi shop in class. And this is the standard staff uniform and I tie up my hair so it doesn't get in the way. Geez, you really are thick-headed."

She sighed and straightened out the fabric of her yukata, mostly to give her hands something to do. Of all the people who could walk into the shop, it had to be Katagiri! How irritating! Even so, she couldn't help but soften her verbal blows for the sake of his friend. Suzume didn't really want to drag her into whatever issues she had with Katagiri, but sometimes, it was difficult.

“May I introduce you to each other? Mori, this is Suzu-chin and Suzu-chin, this is Mori Manami.”

"Oh, sorry for not introducing myself sooner. My mistake," Suzume said with some embarrassment. "My name is Takehara Suzume. I'm in the same class as Katagiri-kun. You're from the Music Department, right? Second year? You don't happen to know my friend, Koizumi Yuuki, do you? She's also a second year in the Music Department."

But, then, all attempts at formalities and pleasantries were dropped as Katagiri continued.

“Suzu-chin, I’m surprised that you’re working at a sweets shop – It doesn’t suit your character at all ~ Are the sweets in your shop home-made?” And then, to Mori, “I would take a careful look at the sweets first - Suzu-chin might have made some of them and I don’t want you to contract a food poisoning, Mori ~”

Suzume's jaw dropped as she slammed her palm down onto the counter. "Say that again, Katagiri, and I swear I'll throw you head-first out of this shop with my own two hands! This is my uncle's shop - a family business - and he works hard to maintain it. I would appreciate it if you didn't badmouth his hard work."

Manami turned her attention to the shop assistant when she heard her affirm the earlier comment about Taro's mindless flirting. She opened her mouth, about to reply to the girl's inquiry about her almost-accident upon entering the shop, but was cut off by Taro's incredulous (and rather horrified) exclamation.

“What are you doing here, Suzu-chin?! Why are you wearing a yukata and why is your hair so weird?!”

The brunette blinked as she watched the exchange in amused curiosity. It was obvious that the pretty shop assistant and her best friend knew each other quite well from the familiar way they talked. It was also obvious that despite using a pick-up line earlier, Taro had no intention of wooing this girl because he was talking to her in his I'm-not-interested-in-you tone of voice. Which was really surprising, because for one, the girl was stunningly beautiful, with her neatly-tied black hair and bright green eyes. And as far as she knew, Taro never had any restrain when it came to girls like her.

Well, you do learn something new about a person each day, even if you had known him for years, she surmised. Her musing were cut short, however, when Taro coughed rather loudly and glanced at her as he gestured towards the girl behind the counter. "Mori, this is Suzu-chin..."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Takehara-san," the brunette replied, smiling at the enthusiastic introduction. But before she could answer Suzume's query or say anything else, Taro once again interrupted the conversation with his comments, the last of which came out rudely and evoked a violent reaction from Suzume.

Appalled by his careless words, Manami elbowed her best friend squarely on the side. "That was rude!" she hissed exasperatedly, furrowing her brows at him. "You should apologize to Takehara-san right this instant!"

[OOC: Sorry that it took so long ;_; I hope you won't be bothered by the low quality of my post XD]
==============================

"Say that again, Katagiri, and I swear I'll throw you head-first out of this shop with my own two hands! This is my uncle's shop - a family business - and he works hard to maintain it. I would appreciate it if you didn't badmouth his hard work."

Intimidated by Suzume's unexpected outburst, Taro leapt back a few metres and stepped behind Mori as if she was some sort of a protective shield. 'What have I done? This is bad...!' Frantically waving his hands in denial, he stammered after a short pause, “O-oy! You got me wrong, I was neither bad-mouthing your uncle's work nor the shop he runs! I was bad-mouthing Suzu-chin's cook-" a sudden coughing fit interrupted his speech "err, I mean, I was merely suspicious of Suzu-chin's cooking!”

Taro scratched his head and thrust out his lower lip. It was not difficult to tell that he was overcharged with the new situation. The Suzume he was used to always kept her temper and no matter how annoying his behaviour was, she always smiled back in a pseudo-friendly manner. Sometimes he wondered what her face would look like if she was seriously angry; now he knew that angry Suzume was an extremely scary and unpleasant person. To be frank, he would not be surprised if she forcibly kicked him out of the shop. His cheeky joke seemed to have touched Suzume's sore spot and to make matters worse, Mori even sided with her, inducing an unwelcome feeling of guilt in him.

"That was rude! You should apologize to Takehara-san right this instant!"

“Ehhh you too?” The boy exclaimed, raising his arms defensively. His best friend was defending his worst enemy, a bitter pill for him to swallow. Mori seldom used harsh words and if she did, she always had her reasons. Taro refused to believe it, but in the course of the years they had spent together as kids, Mori had acquired an authoritative influence over Taro which made it very difficult for the latter to ignore her words when she was serious. The boy growled discontently and sidled up to the counter where Suzume stood. With his head turned away from Suzume, he mumbled incomprehensibly, “Sssry...”

Suzume was rarely angered. Annoyed, yes, that came frequently due to Katagiri's presence in school and Tetsuya's presence at home. However, true anger was difficult to incite in her to the point where even she was surprised by her sudden outburst. As soon as her words left her mouth, and seeing the looks on Katagiri's and Mori's faces, the anger immediately faded into a dull feeling of guilt for having said such words in such a harsh tone.

"Suzume! Is everything all right down there?" came her aunt's concerned voice from upstairs.

"Everything's just peachy, Auntie!" Suzume called back quickly, hoping her aunt wouldn't bother coming down to the shop herself. If her aunt found her yelling at a customer - even one like Katagiri - she'd get in trouble for sure, no matter what her excuse was.

She heaved a small sigh and lightly scratched the back of her head, just at the base of the bun she had pulled her hair into. When she didn't hear her aunt's footsteps on the stairs, she crossed her arms and glared at her school arch-enemy, though it softened slightly as the smallest of smirks formed on her lips.

"Sssry..." Katagiri mumbled.

"Sorry, what was that? Could you say that louder and clearer for me? I couldn't make out what you were saying," Suzume said, raising an eyebrow. "And! If you really want to apologize, have some of my 'suspicious food', which I made myself."

At this, Suzume pushed the plate of dango towards him, grinning and with bright eyes. What she said was a bluff - the dango wasn't made by her at all, but by her uncle earlier that day. Even so, she wanted to see what exactly his reaction would be.
