First thread in BNB I hope the name's okay~ I loved our music-themed topic titles. ![]() Cake Shop Adagio Perhaps it was the cloudy weather -- the sky was mostly grey with a few splotches of blue -- Moonluck just seemed to be going through a rather slow day. Miura could count the number of customers that had come in on one hand. He knew there would be days where business would be more lax than usual, but he never knew they would be this bad. Miura wasn't complaining, but after wiping every table in the store three times, he found himself wishing for some work to do. Flicking at a strand of hair caught in his glasses, Miura settled himself down at one of the tables and pulled out his trusty notebook -- small enough to fit in his pocket wherever he went. He looked around -- the manager was probably in the back, taking care of paperwork or doing some other mundane activity; other waiters were dozing off in the kitchen. Miura decided to use this time to study for next month's test on Criminology, ruffling through the neatly written notes he had taken during class. Studying was his equivalent of watching TV, playing games -- it helped him relax (though he never told anyone this, they'd think he was crazy). Letting out a small, content sigh, he started on the first page of his notes, memorising everything with precision that he had trained since elementary school. tinkle The sound of bells indicated that someone had opened the door. Annoyed, Miura jumped out of his seat and reluctantly chorused with the rest of the staff (who had poked their heads out of the kitchen, their eyes still half-closed), "Irasshaimase~" Edited by NIKI, Mar 2 2010, 01:24 PM.

Despite the depressing weather, Akio was in full spirits as usual. He practically skipped through the streets, stopping every once in a while to stare in awe at the pretty sights all around him. It was yet another day that he spent wandering around town, with no real purpose other than to look around. Who knew; he might strike gold and find a balloon stand. The owners of the balloon stands-- for there were several-- were odd in that they enjoyed moving locations around town quite often. They never stopped in one area for long; when questioned, they would just say that they were "spreading the joy". As Akio flounced along the street, a gloomy-looking cake shop caught his eye. The activity seen through the windows seemed to be as dreary as the weather. One worker in particular seemed to be rather bored, and Akio looked on with interest as he pulled out a small notebook to study. Ah, a smart, studious type! Akio applauded him, attracting strange looks from confused passersby. Well, this certainly would not do. Akio envisioned all cake shops to be lively and active, and he gave this one no leeway. With just one more person (him!), he could lighten the atmosphere; he was sure of it. He grinned widely as he ran to the door and pulled it open with an energetic enthusiasm not foreign to his personality. "Irasshaimase~" Akio's grin grew wider; this store had very polite staff! He liked them already. Edited by Fahrin, Dec 23 2009, 09:37 AM.

Miura gave the new customer a glance -- tall, good-looking, and happy. He looked about high school age, radiating a childish aura despite his height. Miura aimed an inquiring look at one other waiter (Yamashita? Yamazaki? he couldn't remember) and nodded his head in the direction of the customer, signaling if he could serve the guy instead. His colleague shook his head and retreated into the kitchen, presumably to continue his afternoon nap. Mentally noting to kick him later, the bespectacled part-timer forced a smile on his face and ushered the customer over to one of the many empty tables. "Welcome to Moonluck. Our special this week is strawberry shortcake," he rattled off the lines the manager had made him memorise, hoping his monotonous speech wouldn't give away his unenthusiasm. "If you aren't a fan of sweet things, other desserts are available on page four." He handed the boy one of the ornately decorated menus as he spoke. "Are you waiting for someone? I can drag another chair over," Miura added, noticing that he had brought him to a single-seater. Usually no one came to Moonluck alone -- lovey-dovey couples and groups of giggly teenagers were especially common -- unless they were meeting a friend (or were sad middle-aged, balding otakus. Thankfully none had shown up yet). |

Akio's eyes wandered around the store, noting its near emptiness and thinking of ways to improve the dullness of it all. He hardly paid attention when he was ushered over to an empty table, his mind still envisioning a room full of talkative, animated people and balloons... lots of them! All sorts of colors! It was a wonderful vision, one Akio hoped would someday come true. "If you aren't a fan of sweet things, other desserts are available on page four." Akio took the elaborate menu absentmindedly and paid no attention to it. Instead, his eyes rested on the waiter, the same one that had been poring over his notebook earlier. He seemed to fit the image of a studious person, and looked to be the age of a university student. "Are you waiting for someone? I can drag another chair over." Akio grinned up at the serious-looking worker and replied, "Excellent idea!" Before the other could even blink, he had pulled up another chair and forcibly sat the waiter down. "Your job is really boring, right? I can tell from this gloomy atmosphere. Since I have no one to talk to too, why don't we keep each other company?" He smiled hopefully at the person, willing him to say yes. "Ah, and there don't seem to be any other customers to serve, so until the next one comes it should be fine, ne?" In his excitement he leaned a little closer to the stranger, eyes shining hopefully. Edited by Fahrin, Dec 23 2009, 08:41 PM.

Miura Atsushi was, quite frankly, taken aback. He had hoped that working at a normal, somewhat boring cake shop would exempt him from constant run-ins with the more... eccentric townsfolk. Maybe he had underestimated the citizens of Kazebuku-chou. As the peppy teenager shoved him into a chair, Miura shot a pleading glance at one of his co-workers, who had peeked out the kitchen window to observe the commotion. The fellow waiter merely smiled and mouthed 'The customer is always right!' before whistling a Morning Musume tune, ducking back into the kitchen. Miura unconsciously found himself gritting his teeth -- the fake smile that had been there had already faded long ago. "Your job is really boring, right? I can tell from this gloomy atmosphere. Since I have no one to talk to too, why don't we keep each other company? Ah, and there don't seem to be any other customers to serve, so until the next one comes it should be fine, ne?" The boy leant forward, an irritatingly large grin on his face, radiating pure innocence. Miura loosened the grit on his teeth and sunk into the chair, defeated and unhappy, wondering why he hadn't applied to man the cashier instead. Miura sighed with frustration. Now what? |

Akio, so absorbed in his happiness, never noticed the waiter's begging glance at a co-worker who had curiously stuck his head out of the kitchen window. The teenager did notice, however, that any trace of happiness on his "victim's" face was gone; in its place was a distasteful frown. Akio took the worker's sigh as a sign of resignation. As he smiled delightedly in his seat opposite the waiter, he suddenly noticed something very important: He didn't know the stranger's name. Upon realizing this, he immediately craned his neck to look at the name tag on the man's uniform. Miura Atsushi. Ah! Akio grinned as if he had just found some sort of treasure. "Miura-san~ You're Miura-san, right? You look like a university student. Do you attend Habataki Daigaku? What courses do you study there? Did you happen to go to Nijiiro Koukou? I go to Nijiiro Koukou! It's the closest high school to Habataki Daigaku, you know." Akio barraged the waiter with an endless amount of questions, his excitement causing him to talk rapidly. At last he ran out of breath and looked expectantly at Miura, earnestly waiting for him to answer all of his questions. Akio was practically bouncing in his seat; having the opportunity to talk to a university student was so exciting! |

"Yeah, I just entered Habataki. I'm studying law -- and no, I didn't go to Nijiiro. I just moved here," answered Miura, his Aomori accent (which he had tried to correct, but gave up) giving away his birthplace. "... Yeah." His eye twitched in annoyance. Small talk was trivial and unnecessary, and he had always hated it. Miura normally never started conversations; when he was dragged into one he usually tried to wiggle out of it as quickly as possible. However it seemed impossible with this kid -- even after several half-hearted answers he was still beaming as if someone had given him candy. This kid had a problem. Miura sighed once more, leant back in his seat and looked away from the teenager. His eyes wandered from the bleary drapes to the peeling ceiling paint; as long as he didn't have lock eyes with that ridiculously happy moron, he was good (just looking at his smile made his face hurt). |

Ah, so Miura-san was studying law! How exciting. Akio still didn't know what he wanted to study when he went to university, and he said so. "I don't know... I can play guitar and sing! Hey, hey, Miura-san~! Do you think I could become a singer?" The very thought made Akio very happy indeed. He imagined spreading cheer to the hearts of all those who listened to his music. Playing in concerts all over the world to thousands of screaming fans... well, it was most certainly an upgrade from playing in the nearby park. The sparkles in Akio's mind kept him from noticing that Miura was completely not interested in him at all. He continued to babble on to the annoyed-looking worker, arms flailing wildly as he talked. "Ah~ Miura-san~ I can play for you! Today! I want to show you my music." He beamed at the waiter, proud of his great idea. "I just need to run home and get my guitar. I live very close to here, and I'm a fast runner! D'you think you can wait for me?" A sudden idea struck him. "Or! I don't know... would you happen to have one in this shop?" Akio smiled sheepishly, wondering if it was a stupid question to ask if a cake shop had a guitar somewhere. (It was.) But hey-- life could be surprising sometimes. |

The dark-haired waiter raised an eyebrow. Was this kid serious? In the time he had spent in Kazebuku, in fact, in his whole life, he doubted that he had ever met someone so densely optmistic. The high schooler seemed to have not noticed the obviously negative signals Miura had been sending. His ears picked up the word 'guitar'. Apparently the boy could play, and from his humble yet confident manner, it looked as if he was pretty good at it. Miura himself had never played a musical instrument -- he had been pushed to play sports when he was a kid, though it never worked out. In fact, the music he listened to merely consisted of a few catchy tunes he had heard in stores (he surprised himself by unconsciously humming them while he studied). Miura was reminded of the old guitar he and another part-timer had found on the first day of work while cleaning out Moonluck's storeroom... "Hey, Tenchou*. This..." the new worker held out the classical guitar, its body coated in a thin layer of dust, strings somewhat rusty. "I'm not sure what I should do with it. I found in the storeroom." The middle-aged man merely chuckled and took the guitar from the young employee. With expertise, he tuned the instrument and began to strum a few chords. Miura watched on, somewhat intrigued by the sounds made by the guitar. Rhythmic and soothing, he found himself being lulled into calmness, his tension slowly dissolving into nothingness. A small, barely visible smile creeped onto his face. Was this the effect of music? He had never really noticed. "I just need to run home and get my guitar... Or! I don't know... Would you happen to have one in this shop?" "A-Ah. Yes, I think we do," Jolted out of his reverie, Miura stood up and walked into the staff-only section of the store, where the storeroom and locker rooms were. That boy -- was he some sort of mind reader? But perhaps the music he played could take some of the load off his mind. Finding the guitar easily, Miura brought it to the high school student. "Play," He nodded at the guitar, the same, unnoticeably small smile on his face. --- *店長, store manager. I think. |

"A-Ah. Yes, I think we do." Akio perked up at this. They did? Wow~ Life was surprising, after all. He waited patiently as Miura disappeared to get the guitar. As he waited, he contemplated on what song he should play. He scrunched his eyebrows together as he thought, waiting for it to hit him... and then it did. When flipping around on his television a few days back, he had heard this song a character sang in a Korean drama.* It was short and very sweet, and had captured his attention immediately. Right after he had made his selection, Miura came back with the guitar. Akio took the guitar gently; it was dusty yet surprisingly in fairly good condition. He strummed it experimentally, testing some chords and fine-tuning the strings to precision. "Miura-san! I am going to play a song that was originally in Korean. It's called "Song For A Fool" by Jung Yong Hwa. I'm going to translate it to Japanese as I go, so please sit back and relax~" Akio smiled happily as he began to strum the first few chords of the song. His clear voice resonated throughout the near-empty store as he sang the words of one of his favorite songs. Maybe it's because I'm a fool It's okay even if you hurt me like this Even though I was laughed at for my silly love I don't know what to do, because I'm a fool Today, you treated me so well I was happy with just that You only need to smile at me once I will be really happy because of that smile Until that person's love comes I only need to stay by her side like this I'm happy to give up everything for her I won't ask for anything more Whenever she needs me, I'll give her a hand Whenever she calls, I'll listen to her I'll never change, I'll always be there Because I love her so much Because I'm a fool As the last few notes faded away, Akio grinned proudly at Miura. "How is it? It's a good song, right~?" He had put all his heart into the song, and he hoped that his feelings had spread to the stoic worker. --- *This is referring to "A Song For A Fool" by Jung Yong Hwa from the drama You're Beautiful. You should listen to it here. |

'Korean', he had said. Was this kid, perhaps, a Zainichi Korean*? Miura had never asked for his name -- then again, he didn't need to know anyway. The dark-haired boy played a few chords on the guitar, tweaking the knobs on the guitar's head with the precision of an experienced musician. "Miura-san! I'm going to play a song that was originally in Korean. It's called 'Song For A Fool' by Jung Yong Hwa. I'm going to translate it to Japanese as I go, so please sit back and relax~" The guitar's acoustics melded perfectly with his clear voice -- Miura was impressed, his eyes widened as he heard the boy sing. He hadn't much knowledge of the music industry, but his customer, he was sure, had quite a fair bit of talent. But, whatever. Enjoying the music, Miura chased any other thoughts from his mind. Yet somehow, this kid... the feeling he got from his music was different than that of the store manager. It could have been because he was singing -- his voice was uplifting, it brought life to the entire song. Barely two minutes had passed before the teenager strummed the final chord, letting it reverberate through the shop before it disappeared. Asking how his performance had been, he let off a nearly-deadly, dashing grin only lookers like him could pull off. Miura couldn't help letting his eye twitch a bit at that. He sighed, then pushed up his glasses. "You know, I'm not really a musical person. You shouldn't be asking me these kind of questions." Miura sat down opposite the guitar-wielding student, looking away. "But. Um, yeah. That was, actually. Uh, really..." He could feel his face getting hot. "... good. I guess." --- *Zainichi Korean - Permanent ethnic Korean residents of Japan. |

When he heard the worker's (albeit reluctant) praise, Akio stood up and bowed in a 90-degree angle, being careful not to damage the guitar he was holding. Still with the upper half of his body parallel to the floor, he said sincerely, "Kamsahamnida!" As he straightened up he realized his mistake, eyes widening slightly. "Ah, I mean... arigato!" Akio smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, the Korean word for 'thank you' just slipped out...." Trying to mask his embarrassment, he said quickly, "Miura-san! You said that you aren't a musical person, but I think everyone has the potential to learn an instrument-- including you. If you want, I can teach you how to play that song I just performed! It's pretty easy; you should be able to get it even if you don't know how to play guitar." Akio beamed encouragingly at the waiter, hoping that he would say yes. After letting the idea sink in, Akio realized that it was rather foolish to offer to teach a person who probably had no interest in learning an instrument. "Ah... well, if not, that's okay too." He brightened suddenly, already thinking of another idea. "Even if you don't accept my lessons, I can always stop by this shop again to play for you! Any song you want to hear, I will play it for you. Your mood has improved after listening to my performance just now, right? If you're ever feeling down, I will stop by to cheer you up." Akio smiled just thinking of it. And since it would be in a store, he would also be able to spread his heartfelt music to any lucky customers that happened to be within earshot. Miura couldn't help but let out a small smirk (which he quickly corrected with his usual serious expression) at the language-confused boy. He listened on, inwardly amused at the boy's awkward offer, accompanied by the same wide grin. "Ah, well, you know, I don't really have the time to learn anything right now. I have to study," he said truthfully, removing his glasses and wiping their lenses on his apron. If he didn't spend enough time on his grades, he'd definitely slip down and let go of his first-place position in class. Sure, he enjoyed the guitar, but he preferred listening over playing -- he didn't have the kind of talent needed to play an instrument with skill, anyway (he had tried the recorder in elementary school and it had not gone well). "Even if you don't accept my lessons, I can always stop by this shop again to play for you! Any song you want to hear, I will play it for you. Your mood has improved after listening to my performance just now, right? If you're ever feeling down, I will stop by to cheer you up." At that statement, an idea hit Miura -- had this kid been a normal musician looking for a job, he wouldn't have given him a second glance, but the music would probably help him enjoy work better. "Perhaps you could get a job here? As a musician, to attract customers. I'm not sure we can pay you very much though." |

"Ah, well, you know, I don't really have the time to learn anything right now. I have to study." Akio couldn't help but feel his heart sink a little. It was understandable, of course, but that didn't make it any less disappointing. "Perhaps you could get a job here? As a musician, to attract customers. I'm not sure we can pay you very much though." Get a job here? In the shop? Akio's mind bubbled at the very thought. His face scrunched up a little as he thought about it. Hmm... getting a job here was a very good idea. Not only would he be able to spread the joy-inducing sounds of his music, but he would also be able to make some money for his dad. And, hey, even a little money was better than none at all. As for time... Akio certainly had plenty. He was always quick at finishing any studying and homework at school, so when he got home he would have an abundance of free time. Akio smiled brightly. "That would be very nice! If I could...! I would like that very much." |

"That would be very nice! If I could...! I would like that very much." "Great, well, then I'll go inform the manager," Miura finished, giving a weak smile. Having the boy here would be a great step up -- increased customers meant more income, and if they paid him cheap, more money for Miura to bring home (he was saving up for a extra-curricular textbook). He felt a bit cruel for hiring the kid just so he would benefit, but quickly pushed these thoughts to the back of his head. After all, Moonluck was a profit organization. "Make sure you work hard, then." Standing up, Miura straightened his pants and apron, then pushed his glasses further up the bridge of his nose. He couldn't stand not being able to see -- clarity was essential to him. And speaking of clarity... "I don't think I caught your name," he addressed the high schooler, nodding in his direction. -- Short, eep~ xD; |
