Racing the Tempo It was gone. The "PURIRIN" pudding that Tetsuya had bought and safely stored in the fridge the day before had mysteriously vanished. Instead, he found himself gaping at a fridge which was just as empty as his stomach. One of his flatmates had once again taken the liberty to eat something which Tetsuya had bought for himself and the young man decided to inquire into the felony later in the evening when everyone was assembled in the apartment. He did not like the sight of an empty fridge either and was not very delighted by the fact that it was once again up to him to go shopping. ‘My dear flatmates…’ thought Tetsuya with a sigh and pondered whether he should create a chore schedule to get some structure into the household. But first he needed to appease his growling stomach for it seemed to take the disappointment rather badly. He shut the refrigerator door, slipped into a jacket and set out for a nearby convenience store called Eight-Eleven. “Irashaimase~!” Eight-Eleven was a small store, but it offered all the things necessary for everyday life. Carrying one of Eight-Eleven’s metal shopping baskets on his left arm, Tetsuya slowly ambled through the sections of the convenience store. He studied the products on the shelves very closely, comparing prices and perusing every single line that was written on the wrappers for fear of buying something that might not be quite safe or clean. The metal basket was already filled to the brim when the 20-year-old mathematics student finally arrived in front of the chilled food cabinet where he hoped to find his favourite brand of pudding. Then, he noticed that the cooling system of the cabinet wasn’t working properly because the pudding which he was holding in his hand felt uncomfortably warm. A critical frown appeared on Tetsuya’s face. Not properly chilled food accelerated bacteria reproduction (puddings were especially susceptible to rapid bacteria growth) which in turn often resulted in food poisoning. “Excuse me,” Tetsuya called out to a shop assistant who was standing nearby and beckoned him over, “I'm afraid that your cooling system has lost its cooling effect...” [OOC: Sorry for the FAIL post x_X] |

Shin'ichiro heard the jangle of the bell hitting the glass door and footsteps as someone walked in, flung down the cloth he was using to buss the counter with and hurriedly yelled out his required phrase. "Irasshaimase~!" he called, looking over the shelves from the counter, trying to catch the glimpse of the customer. Maybe it was a cute girl -- he'd been having bad luck with women lately and needed someone to talk to, if not a girlfriend (his last girlfriend had been in high school; his last date with a girl, though recent, ended in disaster after he knocked a glass over, spilling the contents onto the girl's white skirt). What took the cake was that now he had absolutely no time to make any friends, after his boss decided to double his working hours after one of the guys left. To his disappointment the customer was a male, a tall young man (even taller than Shin'ichiro himself) who looked rather haughty as he stepped in, before beginning to scrutinize some of the items on the shelves. Shin'ichiro let out a sigh and gave the counter one last vigorous wipe before throwing the rag into the corner onto a box. He remembered: the box contained the food stocks -- potato chips and other assorted snacks, common convenience store fare -- he was supposed to have shelved an hour ago. Sighing once more he picked up the box, replaced the rag on its rack behind the counter, then swung open the little gate that fenced in the counter and walked to the corresponding shelves. As he slid the third pack of BBQ Potato Chips into the near-empty rack, he heard the customer call. “Excuse me. I'm afraid that your cooling system has lost its cooling effect...” Shin'ichiro raised an eyebrow and walked over. "Really?" He stepped in front of the customer and inserted a hand into the opened refrigerator, and truth be told it was really anything but frosty. "I think it must've broke down; one of the guys in the morning shift mustn't have noticed it, I'm terribly sorry," he aimed a quick bow at the young man, whom upon further study looked younger than he thought, about his own age, "but it wouldn't be advisable to buy anything in there now. Especially the ice cream." To prove his point he picked up a tub and shook it, and he heard the sound of liquid sloshing against the walls. He aimed the customer an apologetic look accompanied with another small bow. -- [[ooc: IT'S NOT FAIL AT ALL, VIVI! It's awesome. ]]

"I think it must've broke down; one of the guys in the morning shift mustn't have noticed it," "…and neither have you and the other customers," Tetsuya would have almost blurted out if he hadn’t changed his mind in the last minute and decided to suppress the critical remark. But since he didn't know the exact circumstances of the store - they might've had a busy morning (which he personally doubted, seeing that he was the only one in the shop at the moment) so that no one's had the time to check on the cooling system yet - he only uttered a laconic “I see.” before turning his entire attention to the young shop assistant in front of him. There was something about the latter’s face that looked slightly familiar to Tetsuya; the lightly tanned skin and the short black hair suggested that he knew the person by sight. He remembered seeing the face on the campus before - and Tetsuya rarely forgot a face - and quickly came to the conclusion that this young fellow must be one of his countiless fellow students at Habataki Daigaku. "I'm terribly sorry but it wouldn't be advisable to buy anything in there now. Especially the ice cream." "Well, at least we know how liquid ice cream sounds now," replied Tetsuya with a smirk and reluctantly handed back his beloved but probably no longer edible "PURIRIN" pudding. "So what are you going to do with the stuff in there? And how long do you think will it take to fix the problem?" He asked jovially, bending forward and examining the interior of the malfunctioning food cabinet. "I think I'm already beginning to feel the effects of my pudding withdrawal." |

"I see," said the customer. "Well, at least we know how liquid ice cream sounds now." Shin'ichiro couldn't tell if the man was being sarcastic or painfully honest, but smiled apologetically anyway, with another service-industry bow. "So what are you going to do with the stuff in there? And how long do you think will it take to fix the problem?" That's a good question, he thought to himself, musing over the problem for a while. The answer then hit him -- there was a small but efficient walk-in freezer inside the storeroom where they kept all their stocks for refrigerated products. He was sure he saw a box of the pudding that the customer was holding in there somewhere (the ones in the fridge at present were on the brink of expiring, having milk in them and all). "Be right back," he said as he turned to the counter, rummaging in his pocket for the key to the storeroom. "I'll get some of that pudding for you, just wait right there!" In the storeroom, he moved a couple of boxes that blocked the freezer door to the side with his jean-covered shin and unlocked it. From outside the sound of the bell that indicated a new customer rang, and he called out in a slightly muffled voice, being so far inside, "Irasshaimase!" -- [[ooc: methinks it's time for the shoplifter's debut? :D]] |

"Be right back, I'll get some of that pudding for you, just wait right there!" Tetsuya saw the shop assistant vanish in the storeroom and heard the shuffling of boxes and the sound of a key turning in a lock. He patiently waited in front of the storeroom, mollified by the promise of getting his pudding at long last but still thought that this wouldn’t have happened if the store’s staff had taken proper care of their machines in the first place. Tetsuya did not like irregularities but he also knew that things which shouldn’t be happening actually tend to happen quite a lot in real life: global warming, fraudulent bank counsellors fooling elderly ladies out of their money, gluttonous flatmates eating up all your food without permission and making you go shopping thrice a week. "Irasshaimase!" A skinny, inconspicuous figure sidled into the shop. The customer briefly scanned the shop and quickly pulled his baseball cap down over his face when he noticed that Tetsuya’s curious eyes were observing him. 'Strange guy...must be a very shy person.' He couldn't help but to think that there was more to the customer's odd behaviour, but before he could examine him further, the latter had already disappeared behind the food shelves. Not wanting to be overly suspicious, Tetsuya turned his attention back to the storeroom and waited for the shop assistant to return. "Just wondering, but," Tetsuya called out to the shop assistant who was somewhere inside the storeroom, "are you the only one working here at the moment? Isn't it pretty exhausting to run the shop alone?" OOC: Let's chase him! XD |

"Just wondering, but," Shin'ichiro heard the customer call from the store outside, and he strained to hear it as he gingerly stepped over another box. He rubbed his bare forearms against his apron; the freezer was -5 degrees Celsius and he wasn't exactly clothed for that kind of climate. "are you the only one working here at the moment? Isn't it pretty exhausting to run the shop alone?" "Nope!" he yelled back, grinning at the customer who couldn't see. "It's only for a while, anyway, there'll be more help coming in soon -- woah!!" His leg brushed against another cardboard box (this one contained ice cream) and he fell, breaking the fall with his elbows. Wincing, he got up and dusted off his elbows, which were, thankfully, still intact. Right before him stood a box of PURIRIN pudding. Shin'ichiro smiled and ripped open the top with the trusty pair of scissors he kept in his apron pocket, and pulled out four cups of pudding (something in the customer's eyes told him he wouldn't be satisfied with just one, and anyway the boss told him not to take any whole boxes out if they ran out of stock so it'd be easier to take inventory). "I've got them!" He darted outside, nearly forgetting to shut the freezer door, vaulted over a box, pushed past the small swinging door and found himself face-to-face with the customer. "Here you go!" Out of habit his eyes darted to the corner of the ceiling, in which was mounted a convex mirror used for spotting customers with overly active fingers. And in the mirror, the shady-looking new customer, face concealed by the shadow of his baseball cap, hastily stuffed a couple of candy bars into an already bulging bag. "Stop right there!!" But before Shin'ichiro's legs had time to react the customer had burst out of the door, clutching the handles of his bag tightly. |

"Here you go!" “Thanks, you saved my day,” Tetsuya grinned at the shop assistant and accepted the four cups of pudding with a polite bow. After checking the expiry date, he placed two of the cups on top his already overfilled basket and stuffed the two remaining cups into his jacket pockets. "Alright, I’ve got everything - I'm ready to pay now." "Stop right there!" Startled by the sudden outcry of the shop assistant, Tetsuya accidentally dropped his wallet and a dozen of coins rolled over the floor in different directions. "Oh crap!" Several products of the store had mysteriously landed in the bag of the suspicious customer, who was just about to leave the store. Tetsuya understood the situation immediately and, as a virtuous citizen, naturally decided to help the young guy who had just gotten him four cups of delicious PURIRIN pudding. Snatching up his wallet (the coins on the floor could be picked up later), Tetsuya ran out onto the street where he almost collided with an old lady who thanked him for his rudeness with a thud on his head. "Catch that shoplifter!" he yelled out to random passers-by as he raced after the astonishingly speedy shoplifter together with the young shop assistant. Unfortunately, Tetsuya had never been extraordinarily good at PE so that he was soon lagging behind both the shop assistant and the shoplifter. In a last attempt to catch the shoplifter, he took a cup of pudding out of his pocket and aimed it at the shoplifter -- |

"Oh crap!" yelled the customer, who immediately dashed out the store and into the streets, right on the tail of the cap-wearing shoplifter. Shin'ichiro woke up as if cold water had been splashed on him, and wrenched open the door, tinkling the bell. There they were, far off into the distance. He hadn't done much training recently, but his athletic legs knew what to do in situations like these, and the sprinting he had done during basketball practice did the trick. His muscles remembered where to stretch and contract, and soon he overtook the customer (to whom he signalled a thumbs-up to) but still lagged a ways behind the perpetrator. Just when it seemed like he would never catch up, he saw a small flying object glide past his right ear at light speed and hit the shoplifter right smack in the middle of the back of his head, not drawing blood but definitely leaving a bad bruise from the impact. The shoplifter slowed, and Shin'ichiro stretched out a hand to grab him by the scruff of the neck (or in this case, the back of his T-shirt), causing his cap to fall off. Roughly he pulled both of the perpetrator's hands behind his back, ignoring his pained cries, and held them tightly with his sweaty palms. "Thanks," he panted, turning to the customer. "I owe you one." |

To Tetsuya’s surprise (and the shoplifter’s, of course), the pudding actually hit its target. The shoplifter staggered and for a brief moment, Tetsuya almost regretted his action and feared that the pudding might have seriously injured the shoplifter. But those regrets were gone as quickly as they had come. The shoplifter continued to run; but he had lost his rhythm and his temporary confusion was taken advantage of by the shop assistant, who grabbed him from behind and rendered him more or less immobile by twisting both of his hands up behind his back. Tetsuya, who had completely given up on running, took a breather and slowly walked over to the shop assistant. "Thanks, I owe you one." “Oh, it was no big deal,” his lips tugged upward in a mischievous smirk, “I feel sorry for the pudding, though. What did he steal, anyway?” Tetsuya didn’t know what he had expected to find in the shoplifter’s bag, but he was definitely confused when he found out that it was filled with all sorts of caries inducing sweets and greasy junk food. The fact that someone would go through so much trouble just in order to have some snacks for free (and frankly, they didn’t cost a fortune) surprised him even more than his throwing accuracy. “Wow” he blurted out, throwing a sarcastic look at the shoplifter. “You could've stolen something that’s at least healthy and sugar free.” OOC: Sorry for the lame reply *fails* I thought that the guy only stole a few candy bars instead of a bag full with...stuff. I only realized my mistake after I reread your post...had to rewrite some parts |

"Oh, it was no big deal,” replied the customer, lips tugged upward in a mischievous smirk, “I feel sorry for the pudding, though. What did he steal, anyway?” "Open the bag, let's have a look," said Shin'ichiro, who gestured towards the half-unzipped bag on the floor with a few shakes of his head, seeing as his arms were currently occupied with the shoplifter's attempts to wrestle away from his pincer-esque grip. He felt almost proud of his strength, and gripped the boy tighter, feeling the boy's hands fall limp as he gave up trying to escape. The shoplifter's bag was filled sparsely with junk food -- candy bars, chocolate, lollipops, potato chips -- cheap things one could easily buy. Shin'ichiro looked at the lad with a mixture of pity and sterness, but the shoplifter's eyes kept darting away from his. “Wow,” the customer blurted out, throwing a sarcastic look at the shoplifter. “You could've stolen something that’s at least healthy and sugar free.” "Yeah, what's the point? Stealing all this... junk." added Shin'ichiro, shaking the perpetrator from where he held him. The shoplifter said nothing and bit his lip, jerking his head so his cap fell further over his face. Shin'ichiro sighed. Usually in these situations the criminal would tend to beg for forgiveness, kneeling on the floor and pleading with tears. Television proved that much, all right. "All right, then I guess we've got to take this guy to the police," he announced to the small crowd that surrounded them. He glanced at the shoplifter for any signs of repentance, but again he seemed unfazed. "I'll need a witness, anyone wants to volunteer?" Several in the crowd raised their hands, but Shin'ichiro looked eagerly at the customer. At the very least, he could thank him properly on the way to the nearby police station. OOC: It's okay~! :D And sorry for the late reply >_< |

"All right, then I guess we've got to take this guy to the police. I'll need a witness, anyone wants to volunteer?" Although he was reluctant to spend the rest of the day at a stifling police station, Tetsuya agreed to testify against the thief. After all, he was the only one who had witnessed the entire incident which basically left him no other choice but to volunteer. Who knew what kind of overly exaggerated stories the overly excited people in the crowd would report to the police. "I think I should be able to give a full and objective account of the incident." Heaving a sigh, he made a cellphone call to the local police and explained what had happened, whereupon the voyeuristic crowd erupted in an agitated chatter. "....so many criminals nowadays!" "...moral degeneration of today's youth..." "...yesterday, my neighbour's house was broken into..." Tetsuya rolled his eyes. "I think the police is going to arrive here soon. But before that, I suggest you to close your shop first. If I'm not mistaken, it's unsupervised at the moment, which might tempt other shoplifters to try their luck as well," he seized the shoplifter's arms and added maliciously, "Perhaps they won't fail like you did. But look at the bright side: You can look forward to several months of community service work." The shoplifter's face turned a shade of scarlet and for a moment, it looked as if he was going to retort. But to Tetsuya's disappointment, the shoplifter only threw him a nasty look and remained defiantly silent. |

Shin'ichiro looked at the customer with admiring eyes as he coolly made a call to the police station, all the while firmly keeping the criminal gripped in place. The customer made a few sarcastic comments that made the crowd laugh weakly -- something Shin'ichiro, a good-natured person with a slack and compliant personality would never manage to do. He was cool. "I think the police is going to arrive here soon. But before that, I suggest you to close your shop first. If I'm not mistaken, it's unsupervised at the moment, which might tempt other shoplifters to try their luck as well." He jumped. It was true -- the store was open for attack, with no one at the counter. What if he returned to find an empty shop, shelves bare or maybe even missing? Shin'ichiro began to panic. "Oh, shoot!" he made to run back, then turned to the customer eagerly. "Hey, I'm going to lock up and tell the manager and all that, so, um -- tell the police my name and everything when they get here, all right? I'm Hatoyama Shin'ichiro -- well then, bye!" He dashed back in the direction of the convenience store, key in hand, ignoring the hushed whispers from the crowd about "incompetent shopkeepers". |

"Oh, shoot! Hey, I'm going to lock up and tell the manager and all that, so, um -- tell the police my name and everything when they get here, all right? I'm Hatoyama Shin'ichiro -- well then, bye!" Tetsuya could only shake his head as he recalled the curious incident. 'Well, I guess my shopping tour ends here...'. And so he waited for the arrival of the police officers together with the defiant shoplifter who in the meantime attempted to wriggle himself free from Tetsuya's firm grip. Tetsuya, his stomach growling louder than ever, had some serious difficulties to keep the impatient shoplifter under control. Apart from the shoplifter, who seemed to have sniffed his chance to escape, the crowd was getting impatient as well and even Tetsuya was slowly running out of patience. Another fifteen minutes passed until the flashing blue lights of a police car illuminated the street. Two policemen got out of the car, each of them carrying a walkie-talkie and a handgun around the waist. It was a funny-looking duo: One man was tall and skinny, the other man was short and sturdy. The skinny man seized the shoplifter and forced him into the car while his sturdy partner started to interrogate both Tetsuya and the people who had seen Shinichiro and Tetsuya chasing after the shoplifter ("...and then I saw a cup of pudding flying past me...no, I'm not kidding...and then the athletic guy grabbed the shoplifter...and then..."). The sturdy official didn't believe some eyewitnesses at first, but when he saw the crooked cup of pudding lying on the ground, he had no other choice than to accept the truth with an amused grin. "All right, we're done here. We're going to return the stolen goods and talk to Hatoyama Shinichiro at Eight-Eleven now; afterwards we're going to take the shoplifter to the police station," the sturdy officer shook hands with Tetsuya, "you can go now, but we might invite you to the station together with Hatoyama and the shop owner tomorrow for further questions. We'll ring you." Having said that, the sturdy officer hauled the shoplifter's bag into the car and bid farewell to the young man. [OOC: How are we going to continue/end the thread? I don't think Tetsuya will immediately go back to 8-11 to finish his shopping after such an incident. Besides, Tetsuya still needs to tell Hatoyama his name...perhaps they could meet a few days after the incident? And have a nice talk? XD *no ideas*] |
