A Dissonant Development

Tok. Tok.

Tetsuya could already sense the negative vibes coming from the room, even though the door was firmly shut.

Tok. Tok. Tok. Still no answer.

‘So he’s ignoring me, huh!’ he thought and ran his fingers through his pitch-black hair. He always did that when his patience was strained, and Tetsuya’s patience was often strained, especially in this off-campus apartment, which his flatmates often failed to keep clean and tidy. His co-habitants were often oblivious to the condition of the apartment, unlike Tetsuya, whose critical eyes were extremely susceptible to everything that was not 100% in order. He often found himself cleaning the bathroom or rearranging the bookshelves alphabetically without the help of his flatmates, simply because he was bothered by the untidiness while the rest wasn't. Doing chores gave him a certain sense of accomplishment, but that wasn't reason enough to excuse the others from regular participation in household tasks. In order to avoid further organizational difficulties, he had drawn up a chore schedule which distributed the workload evenly among the flatmates. This chore schedule was also the reason why he was standing in front of Miura Atsushi’s room now.

"Tok. Tok. I’m coming in now!" said Tetsuya and opened the door. He saw Miura sitting at his desk, apparently studying. In Tetsuya’s opinion, Miura was one of those extremely hard-working and ambitious people who put academics before everything else, even before their social life. He had never seen Miura partying (and partying is the main occupation of many university students after all), only studying, studying and working. Tetsuya really admired determined people, but Miura always seemed to emit a negative aura which had often led to several disagreements between the two guys.

"Now, I know that you’re going to yell at me for disturbing you, but according to the schedule, it’s our turn to do the grocery shopping today. We have to buy a lot of things, we’re running short on food and you need to help me to carry the bags."

Culpable Homicide: Causing death by doing an act with the intention of causing death, or with the intention of causing such bodily injury as is likely to cause death...

Muttering furiously under his breath as he frantically took notes, it was obvious that Miura had no time to waste engaging in frivolous activities -- including answering the door. Frankly, the constant sound of knuckles hitting wood was starting to get a little on his nerves, but he had long perfected the art of ignoring unnecessary distractions. He had to study for this test; he had missed essential study time last week by doing overtime at Moonluck and was feeling both guilty and worried. If he didn't get top in class for this test he'd definitely be letting his family down, but most importantly he'd be doing injustice to himself. Miura always prided himself on academic perfection.

A small click jolted him out of his frenzy; someone had opened the door and come in. He aimed a brief glance at the perpetrator -- Masuhara, one of his flatmates, hopelessly anal about cleanliness and organisation. He was okay, albeit annoying at times. At least he stopped the flat from getting too messy (a messy flat meant distractions and chaos, and that would totally affect his studies). Deciding to ignore his presence, Miura continued taking notes and returned his attention to the books on his desk. He had a feeling that his peace was about to be interrupted.

"Now, I know that you’re going to yell at me for disturbing you, but according to the schedule, it’s our turn to do the grocery shopping today. We have to buy a lot of things, we’re running short on food and you need to help me to carry the bags."

Miura's eye twitched, his grip on his pen now loose. Couldn't they just get takeout?

"I know you guys don't take your studies seriously, but can't this wait? I have a test next week," he reasoned, with gritted teeth as he continued taking down notes. "Get one of the others to do it in my place; I'll switch slots with them."

--

@Vivi: Miura already used that excuse too many times, so perhaps forcefully drag him out? xD

"I know you guys don't take your studies seriously, but can't this wait? I have a test next week. Get one of the others to do it in my place; I'll switch slots with them."

Miura did not even look up from his studies; he seemed to be taking notes as if his life depended on it. Tetsuya observed his flatmate with raised eyebrows - why wasn't he surprised to hear this? Apart from the fact that Miura had used the same excuse a dozen of times already (his suggestion to switch slots had never worked particularly well), it was also typical of him to add the accusation that “the others weren’t taking their studies seriously” to every excuse he made. Perhaps this was a common trait among lawyers: Never admit a mistake without accusing other people first. Tetsuya was sure that the others were serious about their studies as well, although they weren't completely addicted to studying like Miura was.

"You know very well that the others have to work on Tuesdays. I took that into consideration when I set up the schedule. It won't take long, 30 minutes maximum."

A few minutes passed without a reply whereupon Tetsuya resolved that the time for drastic measures had come. "Fine, I'll let you study. Since we can't go grocery shopping, I'm going to vacuum the apartment now."

Seconds later, Tetsuya returned with a vacuum cleaner over his shoulder, smiling innocently at his flatmate as he closed the door behind him. No door in the world could protect poor Miura against the great hullabaloo he was going to make. "I think," Tetsuya shouted, after he had turned on the vacuum cleaner, "some music might be nice, too!"

Soon, the apartment was filled with different types of noise: the roaring of the vacuum cleaner, the sound of the electric guitar that boomed out of the radio and Tetsuya’s dissonant singing ("…Hibike go on…roll on…" *).

"You know, the apartment is SO dirty, I think it'll take me AT LEAST AN HOUR to clean it ~"

Now all Miura needed to do was to realize that 30 minutes of grocery shopping was the lesser evil compared to one hour of non-stop vacuuming which Tetsuya was indeed capable of.

OOC: @NIKI- Is this forceful enough? XD I randomnly assumed that it was Tuesday...hope it's okay?

whrrrrrrrrr

Miura, now trembling with rage, could have broken his pen in half (which he nearly did, but decided against it). What the hell was going on here? Couldn't he have some peace for just a few hours in this house? He sighed, the constant whirr of the vacuum cleaner was starting to give him a migraine. It was time to give up and give in. Slowly, he reorganised his notes and shoved them into their respective drawers, grabbed a jacket and exited his room, slamming the door.

Masuhara was there, singing along to some J-Rock tune as he vacuumed the floor with what seemed to be an expression of sheer delight. Miura could only shoot him the most dirtiest look he could manage. You evil little...

"Are you happy now? So let's move it or I'm going back into my room." With that, Miura threw open the front door, clumsily put on his shoes and stormed out with his hands in his pockets, faintly aware of Masuhara following behind. The supermarket was a few blocks down the road, a pretty convenient distance, actually. It took only a few minutes to reach the place -- Miura walked through the automatic sliding doors and sighed again, his anger subsiding after the short but stress-releasing walk.

"So? What now?" Miura snapped at his flatmate irritatedly.

Although she lived in the campus dorms, Saharu preferred to shop off-campus for her groceries. Oh sure, the university boasted a small convenience store with the essential items and there were plenty of restaurants to buy meals from, but when it came down to it, the supermarket had so much more variety and at slightly better prices. Besides, the supermarket had her favourite Pocky flavour in stock - blueberry. So, in her mind, the extra time spent walking was well worth it.

Not to mention the weather seemed to be quite nice, so taking it as a sign that the time was right, Saharu put down her psychology textbook for a while to do her week's grocery shopping. She slipped into a relatively casual, high-neck cream blouse with velvet ribbons around her throat and in her hair, finishing with a navy blue skirt, tan stockings, and black Mary Janes. Checking her image in the mirror one last time, Saharu smiled to herself, grabbed her purse, and left.

Saharu rather enjoyed grocery shopping, if she had to be honest with herself. Looking through all the colourful fruits and vegetables, the rows and rows of shelves, the giant tanks holding live fish - she loved thinking about all the things she could do with them all! As soon as she arrived, she slung one of the supermarket's baskets over her arm and marched straight for her favourite section: the snacks aisle. Her dark brown eyes were quick in finding the Pocky section, which she scanned eagerly for the treasured blueberry flavour.

Only to find out it was sold out.

Well, there was nothing for it but to substitute it with another flavour until she could find it again. Fate must be telling her to try another flavour, one that she hadn't tried yet. Looking again, Saharu realized that there was a new flavour called "Melon and honey". She picked up a box and examined it closely, a small frown evident from the way her eyebrows lowered slightly. After a full minute of deliberation, Saharu placed the box delicately in her basket and moved on to the next aisle.

OOC: Bwahahaha, these two guys are hilarious! I love them already ♥

"Are you happy now? So let's move it or I'm going back into my room."

"Of course, Miura, I'm delighted that you've changed your mind!" Tetsuya shouted after his flatmate, slipping into his black coat with a satisfied grin. Miura, however, did not seem to share his satisfaction; he stubbornly walked ahead of Tetsuya and did not speak a single word to him until they arrived at the supermarket.

"So? What now?"

Tetsuya conjured up a long grocery list and proudly presented it to his impatient flatmate, "Voila! Here's a list with things we need to buy." It was a very peculiar list, not only because of its length, but also because it was subdivided into six different categories: "beverages", "detergents", "fruits", "meat", "snacks" and "vegetables"; even the items in each category were listed alphabetically. It was a very neat list - although its effectiveness remained arguable.

"Wait here, I'll get a shopping cart," he handed his masterpiece to the irritated flatmate and hurried over to the collection point for shopping carts. After inserting a coin into a cart's slot, it broke free from the rest and was skillfully maneuvered toward a not so happy looking Miura. Frankly, the supermarket was not an overly exciting place but it sometimes held unexpected surprises in store like new products, 2-for-1-sales or price cuts (however small they might be). Tetsuya attempted to appease Miura's resentment ("Doesn't that banana look awfully funny?") but when his face remained stony, he gave him a light slap on the back and said,

"Everyone needs to get some fresh air from time to time, it's not good to be locked up in your room all day. Grocery shopping helps you relax, really."

[OOC: I didn't even know that blueberry pocky flavour existed! XD]

Masuhara whipped out what looked like a neatly written, well-organised shopping list. "Voila! Here's a list with things we need to buy." He flashed its contents for a bit and went to grab a trolley. Miura gave him a disgruntled jerk of his head, then shoved his hands in his pockets and proceeded to slink next to his deliriously happy flatmate as they navigated the supermarket. He faintly remembered Masuhara cracking a few lame jokes in an attempt to ease the atmophere -- he usually responded to these with an uninterested grunt.

As his partner loaded some stuff into the cart as they traversed the endless tile floors of the supermarket, Miura found his mind wandering to more... important things. The test coming up was definitely one of them; he had already perfectly memorised a few pages of notes which circulated his mind in calculated whirls. Thankfully he had no social life to speak of -- he kept a safe distance from everyone taking the same classes as he was, not wanting to lend them any notes -- otherwise he wouldn't have any time to study. In any case, he proceeded to recall the wordy definitions he had read these morning, letters forming sentences in his mind like a high-speed computer.

A light thump on his back brought him out of his mental revision (and boy, he was pissed). "Everyone needs to get some fresh air from time to time, it's not good to be locked up in your room all day. Grocery shopping helps you relax, really."

Miura felt himself snap.

"Relax!? How can I relax when there's a pile of notes waiting at home for me to memorise? What about that test you dragged me away from? I have no time to be wasting with you here!"

It took him a while to realise that what he had thought had just escaped his mouth in an angry outburst, and a rather loud one at that. People had turned their heads. His face slowly flushing red, Miura clenched his teeth and fists and stomped away to what looked like the meat and fish section of the supermarket, leaving his flatmate behind.

"Relax!? How can I relax when there's a pile of notes waiting at home for me to memorise? What about that test you dragged me away from? I have no time to be wasting with you here!"

An awkward silence followed, several people in the supermarket turned their faces to the two guys; one of the startled customers even dropped a bag of flour. Tetsuya buried his face in his hands and didn’t know whether to laugh about or to be indignant over his flatmate’s outburst. He did feel embarrassed, though, and therefore bowed apologetically to the people around him.

‘The term second-hand embarrassment must have been invented for such occasions…’

Miura however, chose another way out of the situation: he simply stomped away. Tetsuya tried to imagine what Miura would do if he was a pinch in the courtroom and wondered whether Miura would lose his temper with the judge and then run out of room as well. Although he did not feel like chasing after him, there were things which had to be straightened out once and for all. He caught up with his choleric flatmate in front of the meat and fish section and grasped the back of his collar.

“Listen, Phoenix Wright,” Tetsuya began in a moralizing tone, “I won’t bother you with the word solidarity because you probably don’t know its meaning anyway as it is not mentioned in any of your text books. You don’t want to be here? Fine, go back and study your precious notes. If you refuse your share of responsibility, I won’t share anything with you either. Keep away from the fridge for you haven’t contributed anything and do the chores yourself. And if studying is so important to you, why don't you stop eating and drinking altogether? I'm sure these activities are only a waste of time, too.”

Tetsuya wanted to continue, but his eyes caught sight of poster hanging from the wall which said that the supermarket was offering codfish for a special price. “I’ll see you in a few seconds,” he told his flatmate and hurried to the fish counter.

Listening to his flatmate rant on and on about his admittedly rude outburst, his collar clenched in Masuhara's tight grip, Miura couldn't help but avert his eyes -- perhaps it was guilt, but Miura wasn't going to give in so easily. Though he regretted losing his temper in a public place, he definitely wasn't close to buckling down and apologising. Plus, there was no way this guy could be serious about cutting the fridge off from him, right? After all, he was paying part of the rent.

The grip on the back of his collar slackened, and Miura found himself able to breathe again.

"I'll see you in a few seconds."

Masuhara dashed off to a nearby counter somewhat excitedly, leaving behind a very puzzled and agitated flatmate. Miura let out a large, angry sigh and proceeded to park himself next to a shelf lined with expensive-looking toiletries (who put the household goods section next to the meat and fish aisles?). He felt around his jacket pockets for his notebook, only to realise that he had forgotten to bring it along -- studying was the only thing that could help him calm down at a time like this. He felt like throwing something, anything, the pot of hair cream nearby with horrible packaging... but knew better than to take his anger out on inanimate objects he did not own.

He wondered if he really should do as Masuhara had said -- perform an award-winning stormout and hurry back to his desk -- yet he couldn't bring himself to just leave the guy here. Perhaps that sappy speech had worked after all... either way, Miura was still pissed. And very irritated.

Shoulders tensed, Miura shoved his hands into his pocket and forcefully stomped his way to the snacks section, where he could find something hopefully less fragile to take his anger out on.
