I am currently working on some matte paintings for my portfolio in hopes that they will aid in the acquisition of an internship. (I have one pretty much lined up I just need to send my portfolio). As such, I decided to post them here to see what you guys think. You can also find them on my facebook if you'd like to look there instead for whatever reason. :/ Here is the first one. I made it last night in about 3 1/2 hours. Sadly it's only 720 x 480 (standard def) which means it's too small to actually be used for something. C'est la vie. ![]() Questions and comments are encouraged.

Question: For those non art people, what? It looks like a photo until I look closely at some plants and stuff... Is this something done in photoshop? Or am I that jaded, and is it something that LOOKS like it was done in photo shop and the trick is you actually did this by hand? *is perplexed* Maybe I should just not comment on artistic things, yeah? XD |

It was photoshopped. A matte painting is used in film to make a set look like it continues into the distance when really it doesn't. It is also used in 3D animation to cut down on render times. A good example would be the scene in Lord of the Rings when the Aaragorn and the hobbits first reach Rivendell we see the building with a waterfall in the distance as well as more mountains and a whole bunch of other stuff. That is actually all a matte painting with a part that has been animated to give the illusion that it is real. |

Here is another matte painting that I am currently working on. So far it has taken about 5 hours. It still needs a lot of touching up and isn't quite finished. Any input you could give me on how you think it could be improved would be muchly appreciated.

Hmm, it's cool, but each of the areas seems a little to distinct. The mountains in the distance seem to far away, as well as the explosion being outta focus. The road could possibly be moved over to the left a bit? the right edge seems to overlap with the terrain on the right side too much. And there seems to be a little too much green and red on the hill on the left. Also, I could never do something like this. XD Hope that helps~ |
