Qualifying Complete Qualifying concluded Sunday for the 2010 Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open with 12 women advancing to the main draw of the tournament. It was an upset riddled tournament, as only six of the top 12 seeds survived the two rounds. Fourth seed Kimiko Date Krumm is the highest seed to have advanced, defeating Jill Craybas 7-6(5) 6-3. Sorana Cirstea, the No. 5 seed, put in the hardest work of the day, winning a pair of matches to qualify. The Romanian had reached the quarterfinals of a tournament in Copehagen, losing there on Friday. After traveling Saturday, Cirstea won her first round qualifying match on Sunday on over American wild card Danielle Mills 6-3 6-2, then a few hours later defeated Simona Halep 6-2 6-4. The lone American to advance through qualifying was Vania King. The No. 10 seed defeated Japan’s Kurumi Nara 6-1 6-2. Earlier this summer, King claimed the doubles title at Wimbledon. Mariana Duque Marino was the only unseeded player to take out a seed on Sunday. Marino moved on when No. 9 Yung-Jan Chan retired due to dizziness. Since the women returned to Cincinnati in 2004, two players have reached the semifinals after qualifying into the event: Bethanie Mattek in 2005 and Akgul Amanmuradova in 2007. http://www.cincytennis.com/2010_qualifying_complete/ Edited by Ebonymuse, Aug 9 2010, 10:05 AM.
