Nice win for Kim, back to back Cincy titles. Maria definitely had her chance and probably shouldn't have lost the 2nd, but I think that big black cloud rushed her and was in her head. I know for some Maria fans this may not be consolation but she is looking more than like the Maria of old. And I loved that fighting through the pain in the 3rd set. Hopefully, she'll be okay. The other question will still be one of stamina especially at the open but she should be in a good position to do some real damage. |

I didn't get to see the first set, but I was really impressed by the tennis I saw in the second. Too bad about the injury. Interesting to see the last few matches where Sharapova has faltered when serving for matches and the like. Not part of her "mentally tough" reputation. [I totally understand (unfortunately) where serve problems surface post-injury, though -- it's really weird. My serve was always a weapon, then I got a neck injury -- not a big deal injury, but I got the yips. THe neck was healed, but the yips stayed. Even the summer after the injury, I would lose my service motion at really random points, and would even resort to underhand serving just to get through a game. It's getting better, only surfaces on match point now, hopefully next summer I'll be all better.] |

She had poor Kimmy on the ropes, that's for sure. I won't get too down on her because I think that in this case the weather really did play a huge factor. I know, that's tennis, right? Sharapova got antsy and started rushing to close Kim out up 5-3, with the brewing clouds and thunder-clapping serving to heighten the tension. Especially after yesterday, when the lights went out, and later, the fireworks starting going off, which was incredibly unnerving. The thought of going to another delay shook her up a little more than usual. So she blew the three match points and then they proceeded to close up shop. Clijsters stole the momentum right away when they returned, and although Maria started the breaker well, let it slip away. Eventually Maria just couldn't keep up, but always remained determined. Poor Kim handled the conditions better, I'll give her that, but Maria outplayed her right up until the rain delay, so she should feel pretty good about this week. Provided she's not too banged up. |

DIDN'T SEE THIS COMING! I just found out. I'm in shock. Maria won the first set, was at 5-3 in her favor in the second set. Rain delay. In my head, it is a done deal. Maria outplayed Kim, so far. So, I did not go through any changes to check for the resumption of play, and this is what I get for not remembering that anything is bound to happen when it comes to tennis. The match has been turned upside down- Kim victorious. Oh, well ... Maria was playing so well in the first set and the second, just could not close it out. Because this was a good week for Maria, I feel badly about the final result,... |

I have to admit, I was impressed by the fact Kim was able to come back from a rain delay, at 3-5 40 all and stay in there. Maybe Maria should have served it out, and then of course there would have been no 3rd set for injury, but rain delays usually help the player that's behind. Maria had too much time to think, while speedy Kim was forced to slow down just a bit. |

Rain delays can be Mana from heaven for the player behind. (still remember the rain delay at 04 W Semfinal when Linds was leading by a set and a break over Maria) I would say both women would have some momentum going forward through to the USO , but the whole injury bug has been so contagious you just don't know. Congrats to Kim on a hard fought, gutsy win. Theo |

Dr. Wolf sticking muzzle in. I thought they said she was having problems with her left heel. That sounds suspiciously like plantar fasciitis. Actually, that would be one of the better things it could be. Since treatment is usually proper footwear and stretching. she had been doing a lot of running and with out that start and stopping, I would think her calf would have tighten up. |

That the trainer wrapped it up her ankle makes me think it's Achilles tendon related. Plantar fasciitis is bottom of the heel and foot, but the achilles inserts where your ankle ends and heel starts. (Nike shoes give me tendonitis there.) (And since I'm just like Maria, etc etc. ha ha.) That too is just a guess. I imagine you're right about the starting, stopping, and starting again thing. |

I missed the ankle wrapping, so you are probably right. |
