this is one of those questions that comes to mind every time I see a dual latched hood so I have to ask - is this a owner preference - something to do with the way it was used or something required by law in some areas , willys/jeep did not carry it into later models and I do not see dual latches (4) in the later AMC parts book for 3B - I see two (2) required
?

Randy,

I believe the dual latch idea was strictly an owners preferrence as I've never seen any CJ flatfender series come from the factory that way. It could have been a dealer option as well, and I'd imagine owners added the second latch to keep the rear hood edge from rattling. The '65 3B that I sold to Steve C. had dual latches when I bought it, though I changed out the painted latches for stainless steel latches.

thanks Larry , seems it was a popular mod in the time - rattling never came to mind - was thinking something it was used for (snow plow etc) caused it to unlatch when only 1 per side which would be dangerous later on the highway - things like that - glad I asked

I added a second set to my hood after it tried to lift off. I could see the front latches lifting up all the way to the end of there spring movement. Of course it could have something to do with going 75+mph  It really does hold the hood down nicely.

WOW !!!!! How in the world did you get stopped after your brakes went out on "Windyhill" downgrade? (just kiddin')

Awww,, to be young and invincible again. But alas,,,75 MPH in a 3B is a feat I don't want to try since I got older.

Don,
I am also a member of the 75MPH +. Like you I was young and invincible.
I guess for me a little stupid. On my first visit home after I was discharged from service I took Dad’s Jeep for a wild ride. This was 1958 and the jeep is a 1955 making it about 3 years in age and indicated less than 8,000 miles on the odometer.
At these speeds you only glance at the speedometer, you don’t sit there and stare. The needle was vertical which indicates 75+.
Older and wiser I drive the 1955 around 55 MPH which I feel is a good speed.

 Ya it was a few years ago! I run a mod. 225v6, T-18 4 speed, and overdrive. 5:38's and 32" super swampers. and converted to saginaw manuel Steering box, I also run 11" brakes so it stops fine. Ya it was a mayor pucker factor moment :o I remember watching the hood flexing up in the middle about an 1". I mostly putter around it the 3b with the kids now but I like knowing it has it if I want it.

I didnt think that a flatfender would go 75mph ,even if was dropped from a plane ! haha! I kinda feel the back side get a bit damp at around 55 going downhill with a wind behind me.... I'll stick to 40 mph ! :D
I've definately 'Got the Willy's '
