In my opinion, if you choose to install military type tires on a 3B, the NDCC tire is the style to go with, particularly if you like the wider and more aggressive looking tire when mounted on the standard rim.

NDCC tread was the style that came out on the M38 (and later, the 38A1) jeeps. The NDT style is a narrow design and was the style that came out on the Willys MB's and Ford GPW's, as well as the Willys CJ2A and 3A jeeps.

Regarding the NDCC style, I've run them on many of the jeeps I've owned (they're on the 3B and M38 out back) and have never experienced any problems on wet pavement. We endure a lot of different weather conditions here on the Texas Gulfcoast, but very little snow, so I can't offer anything in that regard.

Randy,
As mentioned go see ebay # 400034059805 to purchase Iltis M101 Michelin 6.50 X 16 XL Military.
That is the Canadian seller I was referring to.
That is an all terrain traction tread designed for every terrain possible, including sand.
It will not provide ultimate traction for any specific type of ground cover.
However it should be the best tire available for your Southern California desert.

John,
Go with the Super Traxion. That is a traditional mud / snow design, good to go in Chicago.

Copperswilly,
The 6.00 x16 NDT certainly is the "correct" tire to have.
I have run the tread completely off my old Denman 6.00X 16" 6 ply NDT's.
They do tend to fishtail the jeep on well worn wet pavement. So brake lightly here.
You know the smoothly worn areas around Hi-way traffic lights that have a coat of oil impregnated into the asphalt.
I think this problem could be remedied by having the NDT tires "siped" ???
In my opinion the 28.5" diameter of the 6.00" x16" is not optimun. It does not take full advantage of the 31" wheel well.
One might expect these to be road noisy but I do not find them to be noisy.
Yes indeed, these are the supreme rock lug; Excellent for the Rubicon trail !
For fine discrimination between NDT's and NDCC's I take Larry Steeds advice.

Galen,
To my knowledge the Iltis M101 Michelin 6.50 X 16 XL Military is only available in one size.
However you might find better Michelin selection in England ?

I like me some "old school" B) My jeep came with Mohawk 7.00-16 NDCC's, and I just love that look! :D

I will take the advise of oldtime and tread lightly...but will be doing it in style! NDCC's Rock!

If anybody's interested, I've got 4 STA 6.00x16 4-ply NDTs for sale. Virtually new - maybe as much as 25 miles on them. They were on the 3B when I bought it last month.

http://www.universaltire.com/cart.php?targ...ubstring=600-16

I'm going for the mud&snow look with the STA 6.50x16 Super Traxion that Randy Baker found for me.

http://www.universaltire.com/cart.php?targ...category_id=343

I'll be swapping them out in the next couple weeks. PM me if interested.
I'm leaving town tomorrow to drive my folks to a funeral in SW Iowa so will be gone 'till Sunday night.

John, if you go with the 4.5"in width rims will the 6.50 fit ok ? , I looked at some of the tires and I see the 7.00 recommend a 5"in width rim ...

a little late perhaps, but i used to have a set of 9x16 xl's on my yj, and have a set of 6x16 sitting in a snow drift for my 3b
good tires, they wear like iron and are verrry heavy ( very thick sidewalls on the 9x16) i'd go check the 6x16's except for the snow. i found they worked better on pavement when i had the siped ( sipped?) made a big difference on snow and ice.

good for everything except gumbo mud and muskeg, unfortunatly thats mostly what we have around here
