I just wanted to say that I spent a week grinding welds on the 53 3b I bought. Who ever had this jeep before me welded everything on it. Springs, shackles, body parts to other body parts, windshield bolts, tailgate hinges plus bolts, axles to the springs, all the bolt on all the u bolts that hold the axles and springs... every bolt they could find, even the motor and tranny nuts even all 20 lug nuts. why why why!!!

There was torch burns on everything from top to bottom and front to back. They burned the windshield bolts off then welded them...everything.

I grinded my way through 5 grinder wheels...

just feeling sorry for myself... :-(

Alright, I have to ask.
How do you change a flat tire if the lug nuts are spot welded?????

Did you take any pictures?
They should go on a hall of shame page. :)
Inquiring minds want to see.

Hey Chris,

I feel for you, buddy. I still hate grinding after all of it that I had to do on the frame and tub. And it sounds like yours is worse off than mine. The very thought of grinding is enough to make me stay in my chair and watch TV. ;)

Chris,

I feel and share your pain buddy. I recently brought home a fairly nice old Ford tricycle diesel powered tractor to add to the tractor collection. Some previous owner, no doubt, an imbicilic moron, welded the housing around the PTO shaft to the cast differential housing of the tractor, and I'm talking a deep, wide weld completely around the PTO shaft housing, as well as the bolt heads.

As luck would have it, the PTO shaft seal needs replacing, so you can imagine what I'll have to grind off to accomplish that job. I, like yourself, can't imagine why an idiot will take a welding rod/gun and weld up everything in sight. There has to be a medical term for such a sickness.

. . . working on my 58 I have found similar problems, though not as much as you've described. Most of the areas I've had involved welds on things like parts of the rear frame and drawbar, and spring shackles (I can't imagine why).

My sympathies to you. Lots of patience and ibuprofin.

Thanks for the sympathy guys my ears are still ringing and my hands still haven't stopped vibrating.

John to answer your question about changing the tires. It can be done. I'm a truck driver and have been for the past 18 years. Truck tires and tube tires come away from the rim pretty easy. There are special tools to use to remove tires. Truck tires are pretty easy car tires are a little harder. Once you break he bead and pull one side of the tire into the well of the rim the tire iron slips in and pops the tire over the rim. You have to work it around the tire but it will come off. I just did 4 jeep rims on my pickups tailgate the other day. Yourt pretty beat after doing it but it will save you money and its a good work out. The next time I do one I'll take pictures as I go to show you how. It's a life saver to know if you don't have a spare and need to change a tire on the car. You just jack it up and start working the tire off the rim.

Oh yeah, I know how to do that - had to, back in the 70's, on my Dad's old GMC camper with 17.5" drop-center rims. It wouldn't fit on anybody's tire machine. I just never thought of doing it with the wheel ON the car. I was just thinking, "How do you change out the flat tire for the spare that's in the trunk (so to speak) when it's welded on?" I suppose in some ways it would be easier on the car than with the wheel on the ground - it won't slide around when you pry with the tire irons.

As far as pictures, I just wanted to see the lugs nuts with welds on them - to be able to say I've actually seen such craziness.

I wish I had thought about taking pictures but honestly I was so tired and aggravated and ready to haul the whole works to the scrap yard. A camera in my hands probably would have been hurt pretty bad if it even though about acting up.
I can tell you that it took me 1 hour to get each rim off. They are the original steel rims and I didn't want to hurt them so the grinding was painfully meticulous.

Thanks Chris, I was at a Northern Tool store last week buying a tool box for the new trailer and came across a 5 pack of wheels for only $2.95 each and bought a couple of 'em. Probably Chinese or such and won't last very long when I start, but I couldn't beat the price, ha!

I too am still cussing whoever welded up all this mess on my tractor.

I've got the other side of this problem. On my second 3B, someone used some kind of saw and cut the seat frames and tranny cross member!
It was a hunting camp hack and somebody didn't like hunters I guess.
