I am getting my 3B ready to move. Breaks are done (thanks for all the input) and today I changed the oil in the transmission, transfer case and put a new gasket on the differentials. My wife and I are expecting our first child and she wants the car port back so the jeep goes out. Back the the issue. Does the transfer case and transmission share the same oil? when I was filling the transmission I had not put the drain plug back in to the transfer case. and when I got down to do it I thought the oil looked too clean. And if so can I fill the Transfer case by filling the transmission? Thanks, Matthew |
| Life is good, I not only have two jeep dogs for the back but a cute jeep girl from the front when she is old enough (or when my wife will let me take her out in it). | |

They do not share oil. Filler plug for the tranny is on the left(driver's) side and the TC is on the right. Ed |

I always fill seperate as Ed said. But, I seem to remember a small hole, maybe 1/4 inch, that connects the two units. It is not for filling them as it is high up and to fill them would take so very long, but, yes, some oil would spill from one to the other. |

It's been a while since I had mine apart but if I remember correctly, the bearing between the two cases is not sealed and I also seem to recall a port. http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Tech/T90Fluids.html So the short answer from me would be yes, they share oil. However, due to the slow flow, you can't rely on filling both from just one fill port -unless you have a long time and don't mind topping off several times as the oil slowly seeps into the other case. But if one has a leak then both will slowly drain. |
